Cornerstone Centre for Intercultural Studies (Cornerstone) is a accredited[1],protestant educational centre for mission work. Cornerstone was founded in 1988 by WEC international. Since its founding, Cornerstone's campus has been located in the old convent buildings in Beugen, the Netherlands. International students follow a one or two year program in English to be equipped for Christian mission work and functioning in intercultural teams all over the world.
Affiliation
[edit]The primary purpose is to prepare people for roles in Christian ministry.The teachers and students of Cornerstone have different cultural and protestant church backgrounds. Altough the college is a ministry of WEC international, Cornerstone is a interdenominational evangelical college and trains candidates for many different mission agencies, faith missions, church mission boards and Christian aid organizations[2].
Educational programs
[edit]Teachers and students live on the campus. The programs are taught in English, and with a strong focus on intercultural mission.
Certificate in Intercultural Studies
[edit]The one year program trains students to prepare for cross-cultural support ministries, short-term cross-cultural ministry and for student who for other reasons have limited time for training.
The course majors on biblical and theological subjects, but includes also missiological and communication courses to develop basic skills in sharing the gospel cross-culturally. Students also prepare a three week hands on cross-cultural mission experience.
Diploma in Intercultural Studies
[edit]The diploma in Intercultural Studies prepares missionary candidates for cross-cultural work in such ministries as pioneer church planting, church nurture, support and aid ministries, ‘tent making’ situations.
Beside biblical studies, the second year majors on missiology, intercultural studies and cross-cultural communication. Second year students also prepare an internship of six weeks hands-on mission experience in a cross-cultural setting.
History
[edit]The buildings of the Cornerstone campus have a rich history in the town of Beugen.
1876
[edit]The sisters of St Carolus Borromeus from Germany establish themselves in the convent. Pastor Bovens welcomes them and describes how they have come “to teach the children, to comfort and nurse the sick and downcast, and to pray with and for us”. For almost 9 years the sisters serve through the sewing and knitting school, the infant school, the girls school and the boarding school for girls.
1963
[edit]The convent and the work are handed over to the sisters of Julie Postel. After a few years, the school activities are disconnected from the convent. The main building remains in use as a care home for elderly. In 1987 the last sisters leave for the nursing home in the Castle of Boxmeer.
1988
[edit]Cornerstone Centre for Intercultural Studies is established in the convent buildings. In July 1990, the first academic year is successfully completed. From then on thirty to forty students are trained for mission work each year.
2017
[edit]Besides the established academic program the Doorstep training is introduced[3]. A one year training program specific for migrant and refugee ministry.
