Cleanup on Michael A. Wiener
[edit]Thanks for taking the time to look over and clean up the Michael A. Wiener I had just created. It was late and well past my bedtime, and I didn't catch the errors. Thanks for looking through and actually reading the article to make the needed fixes. Alansohn (talk) 14:59, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your note on this article, it is good to question everything that doesn't look right. I actually personally know the author of this book and he is pretty reliable, although in this case I agree that he may have got the model number wrong. Here is an exact quote of what that section says:
“ | The problem with helicopters is that they are slow, noisy, inefficient, they vibrate a lot, and explode an awful lot of fuel to fly a pound of payload a mile. Right? Wrong! Recent advances in rotor heads, blades and engines have made the evolution of fling wings a revolution—especially at the Revolution Helicopter Corporation. Dennis Fetters, designer of the super successful Air Command gyroplane series, has completed the evolution of his helicopter dream with the advent of the Mini 500. Initially, he teamed up with Argentinean helicopter designer Augusto Cicare to develop the original C-6 test platform into the Mini 500. However, failure to reach an amicable financial contract forced Fetters to redesign and patent "a newly improved control system." - Armstrong, Kenneth: Choosing Your Homebuilt - the one you will finish and fly! Second Edition, page 202. Butterfield Press, 1993. ISBN 0-932579-26-4 | ” |
I think we need to confirm some other refs and see what they say. This forum which quotes Cicare seems to think it was the CH-6, so I suspect that Armstrong lost the "H" there somewhere. Dennis Fetters also presents his side of the controversy there, too, including most of an article written by Ken Armstrong! - Ahunt (talk) 18:08, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- I think your analysis is spot on there. Based on what we have turned up I think it is safe in the article to make C-6 into CH-6, instead and put it down to a typo! I'll take care of that! - Ahunt (talk) 22:43, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Kennebec River Lights
[edit]Thanks for your careful editing. I sometimes forget to use em dashs instead of "--" and so forth. A couple of questions, though. You added two blank lines between the Categories and the stub tags on Perkins Island Light. Since the stub tags set at the bottom of the page, the effect of this was to insert two blanks lines between the NRHP box and the two stub tags. My theory has been to set these tight to minimize the use of screen real estate for items which are auxiliary to the main article. Is the extra space Wiki policy?
Also, at Doubling Point Light, you changed the NRHP infobox from "COAST GUARD" to "U.S. Coast Guard". I agree that the latter is preferable, but it has been my habit to leave the NRHP infobox as the Elkman tool creates it -- with all of the fields filled out as they appear on NRIS. This appears to be the policy of the NRHP Project group as well. Thus the NRHP infobx title for the Doubling Point Range Lights is "Kennebec River Light Station" because that is the NRIS name, even though the Coast Guard and everybody else calls it by the article name. T-6 Texan II ref list
[edit]I noticed that you changed the reflist on this article from two column to one with the note "2-column mode unusable". I am just wondering if you are using Google Chrome for a browser (as I am)? In Chrome the two column mode just shows up as a single column on all articles where {{reflist|2}} or greater is used. However it still seems to work fine on other browsers, such as Firefox and Epiphany. It seems that Chrome doesn't like the coding for the pages, as it is a very strict browser.
I don't know if that helps at all? - Ahunt (talk) 17:48, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note on this, makes sense to me. Using Chrome (at least on Linux) I always see reflists as just one column anyway, so I am not about to reverse your work there! - Ahunt (talk) 22:41, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Main sequence
[edit]Greetings,
Regarding your well-intentioned edits to the Main sequence article, I would just like to mention a couple of things. First, per WP:EMDASH, either unspaced em-dashes or spaced en-dashes can be used. However, one style should be used consistently throughout an article. If an article is consistent in its usage, it is unnecessary to switch from one style to another, and doing so may be considered bad form. Second, per WP:NOTBROKEN, there is no need to fix a redirect, except in certain rare cases. Thank you.—RJH (talk) 21:06, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Explanation
[edit]Here, you asked why that page had previously been deleted.
Answer: there had been a previous article by the same name; that article was much too spammish. It was deleted (in 2007), and the talk page was deleted along with it. Simple. DS (talk) 14:29, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

RE: Harrison Schmitt POV
[edit]Public polling does not, and never correctly has determined scientific consensus, and it adds no support to your argument. That being said, you provide no evidence for your statistic, and I therefore have no reason to believe it.
For what it's worth, a Gallup poll from March of this year (after the Climategate debacle) shows clearly that more Americans believe climate change is mostly caused by humans than that it is not [March 11, 2010, The Gallup Organization: "Americans Divided on Causes of Global Warming", "[D]o you believe increases in the Earth's temperature over the last century are due more to -- the effects of pollution from human activities [50%] (or) natural changes in the environment that are not due to human activities [46%]". Americans clearly view the threat as exaggerated, which is shown on the same link, but more still attribute it to human activities.
Climate change may or may not be anthropogenic, but the overwhelming majority of scientific consensus agrees that it is anthropogenic. The article I linked to is titled List of scientists opposing the mainstream scientific assessment of global warming. I did not name that article nor was involved with its creation; if you have a problem with that take it up with those who did.
Further, the correction I made was removing the phrase global warming hoax, which is absurdly in violation of the requirement of a neutral point of view. Imagine if one of the Moon landing hoax clowns came along and put in the article's lead, "Harrison Schmitt...was a participant in the Apollo 17 hoax mission". Do you think that would remain in the article long? It would not and should not. Likewise, it was right to remove the statement global warming hoax. Anyway, your revert has been reverted itself, and not by me.

Hi, I see you tried to create previously consensus to keep the article on one place, and you opted to keep it at [{2010 Copiapó mining accident]] (the most accurate title). I invite you to take part of the latter discussion on the matter, located here. Thanks, and have a nice day. Diego Grez (talk) 01:14, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Hello, just wondering if the dots are after Dr and Mr in Stevenson's original? It's just the main article on Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde doesn't have them, and the picture of the first edition doesn't either. Bob talk 20:52, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
- According to the etext at Project Gutenberg, the punctuation after "Dr" and "Mr" is there. Project Gutenberg has a fairly rigorous proofreading process, and I don't think they'd do it if it were incorrect. I can't say if the punctuation is missing in the original edition, because all we see is a picture of the cover, all in capitals, and that may have been done for stylistic reasons. As far as the article missing the punctuation, I've wondered, too, since it is considered improper according to all the English teachers I've had from the first grade onward. I think not using periods after abbreviations is a fairly recent development by British journalists, because I've examined 19th century and early 20th century British writings, and they indicate abbreviations such as "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Dr.", etc. with a period, just like the rest of the English-speaking world. Maybe it's laziness or ignorance, who knows?—QuicksilverT @ 21:05, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
- Mmm, I had a look at that as well - they are there in the e-text. What I'm looking for now is a photo scan of the 1st edition. For consistency, though, it would be best for the spin-off article to have the same format as the main article. Maybe you could put in a proposed move for the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde article? Bob talk 10:43, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Yvon Chouinard
[edit]Hello, Thanks for the many improvements to this article. I disagree with just one. Every reference I've ever seen renders the name as TM Herbert rather than T.M. Herbert. Greetings, the Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.
Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page. Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Awards and barnstars A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

GOCE drive news
[edit] Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.
So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.
We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal. Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success! Your drive coordinators –S Masters (talk), Diannaa (Talk), The UtahraptorTalk to me, and Tea with toast (Talk) |

Portable water purification
[edit]Hallo Hydrargyrum/archive02,
I translated Portable water purification to another language. The guys there asked me for citations for verification for:
similar in function and appearance to a mechanic's grease gun
Therefore I sought the revision-history and found your edit here (20.06.2006)(#12/20/2010#).
Can you help me to find some documents or images proving this? This would be great.
Probably, you know somebody able to take a photo of such a device.
You may use my discussion page on commons: commons:User talk:Rillke/Discuss
Thanks --Rillke (talk) 15:05, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- (Copy of reply left at Rillke's Commons talk page)
- I was writing from memory. I saw such a portable device on a television news report or program, or perhaps an engineering journal, some 10-20 years ago. Also, similar devices have been offered for sale in outdoor sporting goods stores for the civilian market and as survival equipment with inflatable life rafts. Mechanics' grease guns are designed to create a very large mechanical advantage with their pump levers, because it often takes high pressure to inject grease into bearings and movable joints. Similarly, reverse osmosis requires considerable pressure, more than one can provide with direct muscle power alone, so the designers of the hand-held devices borrowed from the mechanisms used in grease guns to increase the mechanical advantage. It took a bit of searching with Google, but I eventually located a couple of photos of such devices at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-8013418-Survivor-06-Desalinator/dp/B000F395X0/ and http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-Survivor-35-Watermaker-Used/dp/B0012YS3XE/. The second example, the Katadyn Survivor 35 Watermaker, has the classic "grease gun" appearance. I don't own one, and most likely never will, due to the high price, so I can't be of help in getting a first-hand photo. Maybe a footnote referencing the Katadyn devices at the manufacturer's Web site might be sufficient.. —QuicksilverT @ 19:04, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
[edit]Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true
. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false
in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.
For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:36, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Courcelles 04:59, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation
[edit]Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". |

Negative numbers
[edit]I'm confused by this edit of yours. You said "endash isn't minus sign", but several of the changes appear to be changing a minus sign (named character entity) to a hyphen. A hyphen is definitely not correct for that use. A minus-sign is a bit longer, and really does look close to an en-dash (although it obviously is a different character). Wikipedia-wide, the style-guide tells us to use the correct symbol (minus), which is good, but also it's harder to type and endash is commonly used as well (sad result). There's actually a better way for the bp and mp fields anyway (see my edit followup to yours in that article). Interestingly all the standard conversion templates (based on {{convert}}) appear to display en-dash per consensus. DMacks (talk) 14:26, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Red Link Recovery
[edit]Hello. As a German-speaking WikiGnome, I'd like to solicit your help in testing a new tool. For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Recently, the tool has been expanded to work on non-English Wikipedias. A small set of suggested fixes for red-links on the German-language Wikipedia have been prepared and I'm hoping to interest some German-language speakers (such as yourself) to work through them.
If you are interested, please visit http://toolserver.org/~tb/RLRL/quick.php?lang=de. Each time you refresh the page you'll be presented with three new suggested fixes. I'll be happy to answer any questions on the tools talk page. - TB (talk) 17:44, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Unofficialpeoria.svg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Unofficialpeoria.svg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Convert template removal
[edit]Just curious. I don't understand why you have removed the convert templates from the leads of several articles. What's the problem with their relation to tooltip. What is meant by, they "break tooltip preview"? Is the use of certain templates in the leads of certain articles something to be avoided? and/or removed if found? --Racerx11 (talk) 00:15, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Has anyone ever pointed out that Wikipedia generally considers it poor talk page decorum to have a signature that signs a word or name that is completely unrelated to your username? Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far. Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. GOCE March drive wrap-up
[edit] Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators. Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May. Polar bear edit
[edit]Hi Hydrargyrum: I deleted your edit at 16:18, 8 May 2012 on the Polar bear page. Some how it duplicated some or part of the article. At first I thought I had made a mistake (I initially thought it was vandalism!). Then, I reverted my initial deletion after I saw you were making good edits up until the last one (which was good plus the duplication). But then on studying the edit, it was clear that a huge block of text had somehow been duplicated. Please check your edit to see what went on. My feeling is that some good changes got fouled up with bad. You might wanta try to re-do the good. Regard, Pinethicket (talk) 17:02, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Kinkade
[edit]I can't understand the why people want the famous dead to be either a 100% sinner or saint. I admire Mr Kinkade's building a business and making a lot of people happy. If lots of people think a picture is worthwhile, it is worth noting. I was not a fan of his work but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I also admired his pluck in pulling himself out of obscure, dire poverty and first attracting positive attention from the "fine art" world. Their criticism has as much to do with marketing as it does content. In their eyes, a work of art is a limited production seen in a museum or on the wall of the rich. --Javaweb (talk) 19:55, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Javaweb

Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles. Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! Em dashes with spaces
[edit]Please stop adding spaces around em dashes used for sentence interruption. That type of em dash gets no spaces, per WP:DASH. Also, list items that are followed by brief descriptions get a spaced en dash, not a spaced em dash. It looks like you are fighting against other editors such as Fat&Happy. The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their July 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on July 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on July 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to eliminate the articles tagged in April, May and June 2011 from the queue and to complete all requests placed before the end of June. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 6 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in April–June 2011", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list. [edit]Non-free rationale for File:Steelmark logo.svg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Steelmark logo.svg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 00:37, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Guild of Copy Editors July 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Out of 45 people who signed up this drive, 31 have copy-edited at least one article. Lfstevens continues to carry most of the weight, having edited 360 articles and over a quarter of a million words already. Thanks to all who have participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, will be available early in August here. Progress report: We are once again very close to achieving in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog. Only 35 such articles remain at press time. The total backlog currently sits at under 2400 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We are just two articles away from completing all requests made before July 2012 (both are in progress). Orphaned non-free media (File:DoRightCast.JPG)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:DoRightCast.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:06, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Em dashes
[edit]Hey, just a friendly note that em dashes are to be unspaced per WP:DASH. Unspaced em dashes or spaced en dashes are equally good for punctuation within sentences, but they should be used consistently throughout an article. I fixed your dash changes at Sylvia Plath (which already had unspaced em dashes) here, but you may want to go back and fix the ones at Natalie Wood and others. María (yllosubmarine) 20:56, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
- The information at WP:DASH was developed by incompetent individuals operating in an information vacuum, who apparently never took a course in typing, nor are they familiar with how line wraps are handled in browsers and other software. You actually broke what I fixed in Sylvia Plath. If an em-dash or en-dash is used without a preceding non-breaking space, some browsers will break a line before the dash, i.e., the dash ends up in the first column of the next line. This is considered bad typography: You will rarely see this error in commercial printed material, unless both the typesetter and the proofreader screwed up. Wikipedia isn't printed material, but it should still adhere to common typesetting standards insofar as the electronic environment permits. That's why em-dashes and most en-dashes are offset by a leading non-breaking space and trailing space. — QuicksilverT @ 21:09, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
- Okay, so why not petition to change WP:DASH if it's so wrong? María (yllosubmarine) 21:14, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hydrargyrum, I see that you keep changing unspaced em dashes to spaced em dashes, recently in the article amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As per WP:PUNCT, em dashes should be unspaced. I reverted your edits (which also happened to contain other unnecessary changes, like changing US to U.S. or replacing en dashes with commas). kashmiri 15:00, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
- The article used en-dashes where it should have used em-dashes. This is simply incorrect punctuation. Moreover, the information at WP:DASH was developed by incompetent individuals operating in an information vacuum, who apparently never took a course in typing, nor are they familiar with how line wraps are handled in browsers and other software. You actually broke what I fixed in Amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis. — QuicksilverT @ 15:50, 3 October 2012 (UTC) (Copied from User_talk:Kashmiri#Re:_Em_dashes)
- Just a very polite reminder that it is not up to you or me to arbitrarily decide that WP:PUNCT should not be adhered to. This is a set Wikipedia standard that every editor here is required to adhere to. Just because some browsers (which ones?) might have buggy line break implementations (as you claim) does not justify breaching this standard. If you believe it should me modified, why don't you discuss this on the relevant talk page? But as long as it is not changed it plainly stands. Note that unspaced em dash is recommended by several English-language manuals of style, including The Chicago Manual of Style for American English and the Oxford Guide to Style for British English, and these are followed by major publishers. So, if you really wish to "adhere to common typesetting standard" as you claim, em dash must be left unspaced. Also, I would not use such a derogatory language about fellow editors who have put tremendous amount of work in developing this web service to the high standard it has. kashmiri 18:28, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
- I've seen this line break behavior in numerous browsers — Netscape and its Mozilla derivatives; Microsoft Internet Explorer; Opera. I've also seen the behavior in various word processing programs, including the ever-popular Microsoft Word. From your comments, it would appear that you've never taken a formal course in typing. or "keyboarding" as it is often called now, and is a common part of a business school curriculum: If you had, you wouldn't be arguing with me. I also don't appreciate you lecturing me. — QuicksilverT @ 18:48, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
- Believe me I know typography better than you might think, as perhaps do people who worked on WP:PUNCTUATION. Completing a typing course (which you boast so much about) might be truly a fantastic experience but I don't really see what authority it gives you to override the well-known, respected manuals of style that I mentioned above (by the way, which manual of style was your course based on?). From what you are writing it appears that – in all likelihood – you confuse em dashes (which are usually unspaced) with en dashes (which are spaced when they separate, not link, words/phrases). Maybe you'd like to double-check with course materials. Besides, I honestly don't appreciate your calling of fellow Wikipedians "incompetent individuals operating in an information vacuum" just because they did not complete your fantastic typing course and prefer to abide by the established Wikipedia policies. kashmiri 20:59, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
- As a last word, you might like to read User:Art LaPella/Because the guideline says so and draw a conclusion for yourself. kashmiri 00:09, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- Will you please undertake to undo the damage you've done, by removing the spaces from interruptive em dashes? Otherwise, I'll have to see to it myself, which will be very annoying. Tony (talk) 00:29, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
FYI, this is being discussed at WT:Manual of Style#Spaced vs unspaced em dash. I personally use the spaced en-dash in the manner shown in MOS because it looks better (than an un-spaced em-dash), and breaks/wraps correctly. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 04:28, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, the spaced en dash is the mandated alternative, and is actually more common than the (unspaced) em dash. Spaced em dashes are not permitted, according to the style guide, which is why I've come to this page—to ask that this editor not go around spacing them. They are particularly undesirable in wrapped text against an image or table. Tony (talk) 07:09, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- You have been politely asked to stop your tenditious violation of the Wikipedia Manual of Style by several editors. If you continue to change existing dashes into spaced em dashes, I will have to block your account from further editing of Wikipedia. I'm not interested in debating the grammar with you, I'm just here to give you fair warning before you lose your editing privileges. Kaldari (talk) 20:51, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- Also please desist from making personal attacks, such as calling other editors "incompetent". Civility and respectful collaboration are required of all Wikipedia editors. Kaldari (talk) 21:04, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
October 2012
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, makes articles harder to read. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. You have been asked several times to stop violating the Manual of Style, especially as regards WP:DASH. As you have not complied, I am left with no choice but to reluctantly give this level 1 warning to an otherwise active contributor. kashmiri 23:01, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
Please do not use styles that are unusual, inappropriate or difficult to understand in articles, as you did in Louis Armstrong. There is a Manual of Style, and edits should not deliberately go against it without special reason. Thank you. Stop applying your non-MOS em dash preference to articles. Binksternet (talk) 01:37, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
- Surely you saw my post at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Spaced vs unspaced em dash. The problem you are concerned about cannot by fixed in any manner. If you put a non-breaking space in front of an em dash it does not fix the widow/orphan control text flow problem. No matter what fix you offer, I will be able to show you a pathological case where it fails completely because of window size or font size or whatever. Binksternet (talk) 01:47, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up
[edit]Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote. – Your drive coordinators: Stfg, Allens, and Torchiest.
