Hi there. I think the page has been deleted. Sorry, i didnt notice that it was in mainspace. I was sending announcements to members of WikiProject Malaysia. I dont know who the person is. I saw the link to that page here: Category:WikiProject Malaysia members. The person must be wondering what happened to his page.:P oh well. kawaputratorque 14:28, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

== or ===?

Hi, interested in why you changed == to === here. Do you know something I don't? MSGJ (talk) 16:05, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Is there a suitable article to which people can be sent when they're looking for the SVD Collaboration research group? --Sturm 15:41, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Your NPWatcher application

Dear JackSchmidt,

Thank you for applying for NPWatcher! You've been approved to use it. Before you run the program, please check the changelog on the application page to see if there is a newer release (or just add the main page (here) to your watchlist). Report any bugs or feature suggestion here. If you need help, feel free to contact me or join NPWatcher.

I saw your comment at User talk:Snowolf, so I went ahead and approved you for NPWatcher. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:26, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Typo in template on my talk page

That's fine, I'm pleased to have it corrected. --Sturm 20:59, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale

Thanks for that - though with Betacommandbot it doesn't seem to makee much difference - I've had over a dozen album covers, most of the recent uploads of which used the fair use template, deleted by BCB. It's annoying, to say the least. Hopefully your edit will fix things. And thanks for the comment about the stub sorting, too :) Cheers, Grutness...wha? 00:36, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Just to check if this one gets deleted, the image is Image:Kaleidoscopeworld.jpg scheduled for 2008-02-20 deletion. JackSchmidt (talk) 20:24, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Burnside ring

Thanks for the tidying up, JackSchmidt. I notice that some of the entities such as ∪ (similarly for mapsto?) don't display in IE (I'm a FF user, so don't mind). Do we just accept that? [I'm a novice article writer - previsouly I've just done a few edits here and there.] Second thing - I think the Examples section should indeed be a section: while it does predominantly give the marks, it ends by relating them to the ring structure. Perhaps that could be made more explicit. By the way, do you know whether the description as a ring is due to Andreas Dress? I'm sure I heard that somewhere. Simplifix (talk) 17:26, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Another thing: there are now two (correct but distinct!) uses of the term permutation representation on the page. I tried to restrict it to mean the linear representation associated to a group action, but you used it to mean the action itself. I suppose this is unavoidable. Perhaps we need a disambiguation sentence! Simplifix (talk) 18:11, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Stub templates

HI Jack, thanks for your notes. The removal of stub-templates is part of the AWB framework and is based on article length and possibly other factors. Neither of the articles Mother Courage and Feist are stubs, so it seems that AWB is working correctly here. Regards, Rich Farmbrough, 09:31 18 February 2008 (GMT).

Re: WP:ACC Question

Yeah, it was a straight forward create. She/he could have chosen to created it without going to WP:ACC, but I suppose its there choice. - Milk's Favorite Cookie 19:12, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

RE: AAA

Hey! I just thought it needed a bit of wikilinking, some paragraph forming and other minor cleanups. But it looks really good, keep up the good work! WEBURIEDOURSECRETSINTHEGARDEN that one guy who buried stuff 20:55, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough. I've put it back. Cheers, Opus33 (talk) 23:32, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the advice!--Editor510 (talk) 16:45, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Orphans

Guess it's kinda vague "few or no" - and there's no real reason that something shouldn't be an {{orphan}} or {{linkless}}. Certainly there's no reason to think that article should expect more links to it. Rich Farmbrough, 17:45 26 February 2008 (GMT).

Sounds fine to me - note that if you use the tag then it will get dated and hopefully dealt with eventually. If you just use the cat, then it will probably get looked at by me manually, and have it converted to a tag (or removed :). Rich Farmbrough, 18:17 26 February 2008 (GMT).

Boubaker Afd

Hello,

Unfortunately the Afd process has slipped totally out of control on fr:WP - and the contestation of the AfD's result is turning into mass vandalism, only a small part of that is coming from the article's creator, the rest is caused by a very well known (at least on fr and nl WP) belgian vandal (a little bit of explanation from here). Thus I do not know if I can give any useful comment about that. The person that has created this article speaks fairly well english. Nowadays, tunisian academics tend to use more and more english and less and less french. His french level is not so good, I have some trouble to understand him. Even though I'm an engineer, I'm not a math expert and I'm now slighly fed up with that story and willing to get out of it. I think user:Barraki (same username in French) and user:French Tourist (fr:utilisateur:Touriste) are much more able than I am to have a discussion about that - but they should be contacted on fr:WP, their activity here is fairly low. Well, let's see what happens next. Clem23 (talk) 22:43, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, from the IP we had on french WP I believe there is a team of coordinated people (not many) in Tunisia that use IP in the ranges 41.224.XX.XX and 196.203.XX.XX, plus a bunch of static IP. May be only one person still, always located in Tunisia. The vandal has totally different IP, belgian or proxies. It's been lasting for 1 year, this boubaker story is just a very small thing (check the history of my talk page here, it's one of the least attacked compare to my french, finnish or romanian accounts) and I hope it will calm down. See you. Clem23 (talk) 23:05, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Important Message : Sir JackSchmidt

Sir I am contacting you on behalf of the Polynomials owner; he can not use WP facilities, but as a doctoral candidate with him, among 9 others, he asked me to ask you not to give up in this question. as you said :..'fed up with that story and willing to get out of it..."

In fact your message to clem23 showed us that you are very very different from him; at least you knew he is not neutral.

We'll not waste your time, we will summarize:

the sketch of the page in fr.WP was done by someone of our group, some administrators suggested changes, changes were done ,but other changes were requested etc.. all this was normal(a work is accepted or declined..this is normal)BUT the surprise appeared when some of us discovered and saved on authentic records the discussion between clem23 and some administrators (we will give you the authentic list) discussing the polynomials and the reasons clem23 is giving to 'shut them up' :
It was a teRRRRible discovery , we will not shock you, but see a small sample :
 "Arab enraged, we must shut him up, dirty ..., this clown, démentiel =insane infuriated entété stubborn..petit polisson!!!...

Do you see, is this a way to deal with contributers... Some of our group wanted to complain,but the polynomial owner aged twice as clem23, was indulgent, even if could not avoid excesses du to some historical causes (Many countries were French colonies...)

So, Sir we can tell you more.. But we won't bother you.. But don't waste your time with Jean Clément MartinClem23, It is not a problem of communication...We have never accused him, never insulted him, some of us tried to use WP facilities but they were persecuted by him and by the 6 administrators .

Now he is insulting the person personnally, and he promised to ERASE the page from EN.WP (in a last message to Balougadour) the concerned person can not answer and even doesn't know that... this is not fair, sir is it?

In EN.WP, NEVER such things happened.. so stay there in order not to let them happen. please answer on your own page (this page) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.224.219.31 (talk) 01:06, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for adding another source to Boubaker polynomials. I think the article is much better sourced now. It may not be quite enough for inclusion yet, but it is close enough to remain as a "draft" in user space, for sure. If you want to handle it this way, then you should sign up for a wikipedia account, which just means, choose a username, choose a password, and go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Userlogin?type=signup (WP:Account if you need more information).
Once you have a stable account, then you can request that the Boubaker polynomials page be restored to User:YourName/Boubaker polynomials and you can polish the article there. Certainly keep looking for sources right now. The AfD will remain open several more days, and any improvements you make will help the case. I have the page watched, and will try to fix any technical problems I see, so they do not detract from your efforts.
For the AfD itself, there is no need to worry about individual users. An independent administrator will need to judge consensus, and they will be very familiar with the common weaknesses of editors. JackSchmidt (talk) 03:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Stupid questions

Hey JS, you are obviously far more knowledgable than I on the wiki software, maybe you can clue me in on how to get my localhost wiki to work right. How is the /wiki/(article) and /enwiki/w/index.php?title=(article) structure accomplished? I know the answer is RTFM but can you at least point me to the right FM to read? Thanks. Franamax (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 07:39, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

mw:Short URL is the standard manual page. If you are using apache AND have control of apache's main config file it is easy (oddly the easy way more or less requires root, hence the very long page in the manual about how to do it for web-hosting services). You add the line Alias /wiki /path/to/mediawiki/index.php to the virtual host configuration for your wiki website. For instance, if your wiki was called wiki.mydomain.com and on the web server lived in a directory called /home/myuser/mywebsite/, and the mediawiki install had been renamed from mediawiki-1.11.1/ or whatever to just w/, then the following might be an ok VirtualHost entry in your httpd.conf or apache.conf (or wherever you configure Virtual hosts for the Apache httpd web server):
<VirtualHost *>
        DocumentRoot    /home/myuser/mywebsite/
        ServerName      wiki.mydomain.com
        ServerAlias     www.wiki.mydomain.com
        ErrorLog        /var/log/httpd/wiki.error
        Alias           /wiki /home/myuser/mywebsite/enwiki/w/index.php
</VirtualHost>
After this you edit you mediawiki config file LocalSettings.php to make sure it includes:
$wgScriptPath       = '/w';
$wgArticlePath      = '/wiki/$1';
Note that you probably want to be running a vaguely recent mediawiki if at all possible. I've had very good luck with 1.9, 1.10, and 1.11, series. Once you get back to 1.4 and 1.5 there are enough differences that the manuals become hard to use (I believe in particular for short urls there are changes). The manual will describe some even shorter alternatives, but I have found the way wikipedia does it (the way I describe, software in w/ and Alias to pretend wiki/ JackSchmidt (talk) 18:55, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback can only be used to revert vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback may be removed at any time.

If you do not want rollback, then contact me and I'll remove it. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, just leave me a message on my talk page. Happy editing! Malinaccier (talk) 23:43, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Ichisada

At the risk of sounding obtuse, what is the technical definition of a copyvio on Wikipedia. If something has the equivalent structure and effect, does that make it a copyvio? Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 07:42, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Non-display parameter for templates

Hello Jack. I'm happy to hear you may have solved the template display problem that I mentioned at WP:VPT. I tried out your TL_AddCats template in my Sandbox and it appears to work. But, from reading the VPT thread, it seems that Happy-melon wanted to use a different solution. Do you understand what he proposed? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 04:06, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm glad you've embarked on the fix. Here's my latest finding. The whole reason that Template messages file is being put in a speedy deletion category is this one template: {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed}}. Note that I didn't transclude it here; it would have made your User talk into a candidate for speedy deletion! For example:
Curiously, the page doesn't show up in the Category if you only use the preview button, you have to save the page. If I knew how to fix this template I'd be eager to do so. Since I don't understand how your fix works I'd better not touch this until I hear your recommendation of what to do! This template is not protected. EdJohnston (talk) 05:18, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing my Sandbox! Can you add a proper explanation to my initial report?. Also let me know if I can help edit any of the remaining templates. I may be able to edit the protected templates if we get appropriate permission to do this (or possibly we need to do an 'editprotected' on every Talk page first?)
