2016 GA Cup
Greetings, all! We would like to announce the start of the 3rd GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been two GA Cups; both were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 500 nominations listed and about 450 articles waiting to be reviewed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time. The 3rd GA Cup will begin on March 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on July 31, 2016), but this may change based on participant numbers. There will be slight changes to the scoring system, based upon feedback we've received in the months since GA Cup #2. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same. We're also looking to spice up the competition a bit by running parallel competitions. Finally, there's a possibility of assisting a WikiProject Good Articles backlog drive in the last three weeks of February, before our competition. Please stay tuned for more information as we get it. Ridge Racer
Hi,

- Hey. I think the article is looking in better shape than when I passed it, so an FA is definitely a possibility. Some people would suggest that track listings are WP:GAMECRUFT, but I strongly disagree, as long as the track listings are relevant to the game, so I wouldn't worry about that. I can't speculate, but it sounds like it was recorded in 1993, unless it truly took 21 days to complete! JAGUAR 19:58, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

AWB errors

Delinking countries
Late January 2016, there was a discussion about your use of AWB to delink countries from many articles (see User talk:Jaguar/Archive 20#Please stop. I asked you there at the end of the discussion "In general, please don't remove links to the country a geographic location is in from articles on that geographic location.", and you agreed to "I'll ask for opinions before I set out unlinking the names of countries again."
I notice that you are now (in your most recent edits) doing the exact same thing, unlinking Iran from articles on villages in Iran, e.g. here, here, here, here and here? Strangely, inbetween those edits you didn't remove it from here, but there you made other errors pointed out by Bgwhite above (strangely, it isn't an either/or situation, as you did both here).
Among these hundred of edits which probably shouldn't have been made, you also include things like this, where you completely remove the unreferenced template from an unreferenced article. The same happened here.
Before the Iran articles, you did the same on Kazakhstan articles like here. This run also included removals of unreferenced templates on unreferenced articles[1] and the incorrect partial removal of the template[2]. Mongolia was the target before that for your unwarranted removal of the unreferenced template (e.g. [3], and Indonesia for the country removal[4]
You clearly have some problems with your script and seem to be running it unsupervised. Additionally, it looks as if the removal of the countrie links is not supported by consensus and guidelines, as shown in that previous discussion, but perhaps you have had a discussion and consensus since that supports your actions. For the former problems, just stop, correct the previous errors, correct your script, and don't run AWB unsupervised. For the latter, either show that discussion you had since the January talk page discussion and that supports your actions, or stop them completely and revert your changes. Otherwise you are undoubtedly heading towards WP:AN and a probable block. Fram (talk) 12:29, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Fram: I've removed the script I've been using and am currently in the middle of replacing all of the deleted links to the countries. This includes Vietnam, Iran, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. It's only now that I understand what has happened; I programmed AWB to remove overlinkage after the comma in the first opening sentence of a desired article (eg. x village, x county, x district, Iran), so now I'm manually re-adding the links back. In addition, I'm fixing the {{unreferenced}} tags Bgwhite noted above. To do this I'm going past my contributions over four days, so it will most likely take a couple of hours. 24 hour block
You were warned to check your AWB scripts and to not let it run unsupervised (or to check your AWB edits). But after the above two sections, you are still making the same error again and again. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]...
And readding a link doesn't mean to link it every time it appears, like [15] (extreme example, but many others with same issue). If you had just undid your previous edits instead, it would have caused much less problems.
After the block expires, please make sure that all noted problems are solved before reusing AWB, and check your edits before saving (or immediately undo an accidental save which shouldn't have happened, that's no problem either). Otherwise your AWB access will be removed. Fram (talk) 14:19, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
- I don't know if you can mass-rollback edits through AWB, and even if I did, I wouldn't because the majority of my edits didn't just involve de-linking the country names. The mass-cleanup was intended to correct typos, syntax and remove genuine overlink such as "village" and "town". I have a day to think this over though, I'll look into it. I disabled adding links in templates, and I programmed it so it only re-adds the name of the country after a comma in the opening sentence. I'll have to think about how to approach this. - I think you need to give serious thought to whether the correct approach to this would simply be to stop using AWB completely. You must be aware that there is an increasing number of threads on your talk page questioning the validity of your edits and the impact they are having is magnified because of their sheer volume. You will remember how another admin and I had to revert well over a thousand edits you made without any contact with the relevant WP project. Take a look at my edit count stats, I would class myself as a relatively heavy editor of WP, but you will see the spike in last month's edit count. That spike is entirely down to fixing edits you had made. Given that the regularity with which concerns are being raised, I am worried that there are thousands of edits that you have made which do not have consensus and are therefore not constructive. My opinion overall is that the edits you are making are of marginal benefit to the project and it would not really impact anyone were they not done at all. I would suggest it would be better for everyone if you were to stop using AWB, at least for a period of time and use that time to get involved in another area, before sufficient opinion is generated that leads to you having AWB rights removed. If a bot could rollback my edits with that created the malformed templates, that would be good but I'm not overkeen on rollbacking all of them because the majority of them did remove genuine overlinks and fix typos. Compass points
I note that the most common change in the above contentious edits, apart from delinking the country, was adding hyphenation to compass points. This has been the subject of an AN discussion, and it became clear there that doing this for British English subjects is correct. However, you seem to do this for all countries and articles, no matter if they are normally written in British English, American English, or no particular version. In the latter two cases, your change should not be made. Examples include the Philippines, which have no clear British links but have been under US rule for quite a while. Can you explain why you made changes like this one?
If you were indeed incorrect to make these, it is again an argument why it would have been better to simply revert your changes instead of trying to correct one problem only. Fram (talk) 16:09, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
- Vietnam and the Philippines are the two batches of cleanups that I know that don't use hyphenated compass-points. They both have ties to the US (heh, Vietnam definitely does), so when I get to it I'll de-hyphenate them. This was an oversight, but I'll de-hyphenate them along with adding back the country links. - Please simply revert all your edits in this country batch. Contrary to what you say, there were very few that actually corrected any typos or anything similar, the most useful some of them did was unlink "river", but undoing that change is a very small price to make certain that all your other problematic edits are solved. - Please simply revert all your edits in this country batch. Contrary to what you say, there were very few that actually corrected any typos or anything similar, the most useful some of them did was unlink "river", but undoing that change is a very small price to make certain that all your other problematic edits are solved. Indonesia

- You were actually blocked for continuing to mess up unreferenced templates while de- and relinking countries, not really for the delinking itself. If you had continued with the delinking, then you would probably have been blocked for that, but the actual block wasn't for that. Fram (talk) 20:44, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Linking of countries
Hi Jaguar. Don't want to add to the problems you have been having with linking/unlinking country names, but when you are restoring the links, please try to make sure you do NOT link the name within an image file title, as happened at [16], as this breaks the table and causes the map image not to display, which I am sure was not your intention. - Sure, I've taken it. That reminds me, I was in London in April 2014 and I was caught up in an area where there was some serious filming going on. I was convinced I witnessed this film being made because I saw some motorbike scenes, but after reading the article I realised it wasn't this because shooting of 1: Nenokkadine ended in December 2013. - JO Bieson, he will not review it because he is busy with the GA review of 1: Nenokkadine. Plus, you should only nominate an article when you find it significantly developed, and if you are the top contributor to it. - I agree; obviously the ultimate goal of Wikipedia would be to have six million FAs, but a lack of manpower and motivation from active editors contributes to the lack of quality content. The Eiffel Tower is a good way of looking at it, I've never though of it like that before! I wouldn't worry about breaking your streak too much. My first six or seven GANs failed in 2010, and really it's only been since 2014 that I've started contributing to a lot of GAs. JAGUAR 16:39, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
