[edit]A lot of the 'helpful' pages on Wikipedia can be a bit scary, but really it's not as hard (or as serious) as all that! Many of the people who've been contributing here for a long time have never even read a lot of those pages! Firstly, you don't have to create a signature! It's done automatically for you; all you have to do is type ~~~~ at the end of what you say, and a signature gets magically added :-) If you're feeling adventurous, you can change your signature, but I'm guessing that isn't a good idea right now!
Most of contributing to Wikipedia is just common sense. All those pages and pages of guidelines can be summed up as below.
The basic stuff you need to know about Wikipedia is:
You can edit most pages by clicking 'edit this page' and making the changes, then clicking 'save page'. You can do that even if you don't have an account.
If you have an account, it doesn't cost you any money or give you any spam. If you just walk away from the computer and never log in again, no harm will be done. There is no need to cancel an account :-)
Everything you add to the encyclopedia we are developing here should be written like you'd expect to find an encyclopedia written.
You should try very hard not to add your own opinion to articles; instead, add what other people have said in published books, magazines, etc
You should try very hard to make a note of where the information you are adding can be found, so that other people can look it up.
If you're not sure about what should be changed in a particular article, or think someone made a mistake but you're not sure, try asking on the talk page for that article. It can be found by clicking the 'discussion' tab at the top of the page, then it can be edited like any other page.
If you put two square brackets on each side of a word, like [[this]], it turns it into a link to the wikipedia article with that name, like this!
There are lots of little fiddly extras, but you'll pick them up later when them come up. If you need help, you could edit my user talk page User talk:Skittle to ask for help, or you could edit someone else's user talk page, or you could ask on the help desk. Just remember, the basics aren't really as complicated as we make them look!
