City of Spokane vs generic "Spokane"

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

I’m sorry that you don’t understand how geography works. “Spokane”, separate from the City of Spokane, is a generic word also used to describe nearby unincorporated Spokane County. The area in question is part of 2 different cities and unincorporated county; primarily City of Spokane Valley which incorporated in 2003 well after the school district's formation, City of Millwood, as well as unincorporated Spokane County. None of those are City of Spokane or would constitute linking to the City of Spokane page, and a rational personal would realize that none of the addresses involved are in City of Spokane either. If you’re insisting to use the generic term of Spokane for a location not inside City of Spokane limits, the intelligent thing for you to have suggested would have been a recommendation to link to Spokane County’s page using the generic name Spokane. I don’t know if this is a power thing, personal insecurity thing, or maybe you’ve just had a bad day in your personal life. But in the future maybe lay off the snide messages and false sense of intellectual superiority if you don't have a great education on the topic. 509Freedom (talk) 04:41, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the long unsourced soliloquy. I didn't read it nor will I, or I doubt will anyone else. All new edits, such as you have made are subject to revision or removal. You agree to that every time you press the "publish changes" button. I'm not going to waste my time arguing your non arguments here. If you wish to dispute that the school district's address is Spokane, do so at the article talk page. Arguments need to be based in reliable sources. I cannot see any argument that would prevail over the school district's own website clearly stating it is, being backed up by an agency of the US government charged with collecting accurate data about schools, but, hey, knock your socks off. Please read WP:5P, the basic backbone of our policies, and WP:BRD, the procedure you should have been following as an initial step in dispute resolution. You've got to stop edit warring (WP:EW), and discuss, dispassionately, what the sources say. This isn't personal and it isn't a battle. I don't want to see you getting blocked. But that's the route you're going down. See you on the article's talk page. John from Idegon (talk) 06:07, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Responding without reading anything from a position of ignorance? Sounds about par for the course. Talking to people like an actual adult instead of trolling usually cultivates “dispassionate” discourse, and leaving whatever “online ego” you’ve accumulated over the years at the door. 509Freedom (talk) 17:39, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

If you still think this article should be deleted, please do not add {{proposed deletion}} back to the page. Instead, feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks! Yes, well done on 100K edits - and a whopping 64.7% of them to mainspace! I really came here to tell you that I am going to retire from my stewardship of the schools project. 10 years is long enough and I haven't been able to keep such a close eye on it for several months. There's also the fact that with various recent Arbcom decisions (the jury is still out on my case) my enthusiasm for Wikipedia is somewhat daunted. I also have another damned hospital visit coming up. Someone needs to hold the fort so it would be great to see your name back up there as one of the coords. Changes

Hello User, With your current revision you made in the "Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin" site revised the original order. By doing that you have gotten rid of important information. Please revise from doing so. Thank you WRGoalie88 (talk) 13:47, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

Why, WRGoalie88? I've made hundreds of changes to that article (it isn't a "site", whatever that means). Which one do you find troublesome and why? Please explain using DIFFS, reliable sources and policies and guidelines. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 18:24, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello User, what I mean is by changing to "site" back to one of the old revisions made it so the article outdated. WRGoalie88 (talk) 22:45, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi WRGoalie88. When you're WP:BOLD in improving and article but subsequently WP:REVERTed by another editor, it's generally good practice to follow WP:BRD and try and understand why you were reverted by engaging in discussion on the relevant article's talk page. Wikipedia is a collaborative editing project with people from all over the world editing it; so, disagreements over article content are pretty much unavoidable. When they happen, trying to resolve them through discussion is usually the best way to avoid edit warring or issues between editors. Moreover, when you leave edit summaries, please be careful with what you write. John's reverting of the article to a previous "clean version" was not vandalism as you claimed here. While you might have not meant anything personal by such an edit summary, you need to be careful when using words like "vandalism" on Wikipedia because they are defined a certain way and accusing another editor of such a thing can be seen as a personal attack if you're not careful.
Finally, you might want to take a look at Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors for reference; Wikipedia doesn't place any age limitations on its editors, but there are things about it that all editors, particularly younger editors, should be careful about and at times it can be an unpleasant experience. Another thing you should look at is Wikipedia:User pages, in particular Wikipedia:User pages#What may I have in my user pages? and Wikipedia:User pages#What may I not have in my user pages?. Your user page is only "yours" so to speak in name only, and isn't like Facebook or Twitter where you can post anything you want. It's OK to post a bit of personal information about yourself if you want, but please remember that Wikipedia is in the real world and people might be able to figure out who you really are if you post too much detail; moreover, any excessive detail that really has nothing to do with your activities on Wikipedia can be removed at anytime. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:34, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition

Hi, I have additional backup for the page that should pass the notability requirements. I just need time to assemble it and add to the page. Could you postpone deletion until I can assemble and update? 2/12/2020 Cyberstrike1979 (talk) 02:56, 13 February 2020 (UTC)Cyberstrike1979

Cyberstrike1979, do you have some sort of relationship with the organization which sponsors this, the competition itself, or any of the participants? John from Idegon (talk) 17:54, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
John from Idegon, No, I do not. I never participated or attended it either. I don't even work in the same field as this competition. I do have kids that went to martial arts competitions and I know how serious the kids, schools, and organizations are when they compete. They try very hard and put in a lot of effort. So I want to be sure credit is given if due. Considering how critical cyber defense is to protecting our present technology-driven way of life, I believe this would be notable as a long term advancement in a technological field. However, considering how busy I am, I need to find time to see if I can show that. I also wouldn't be related to any of the sources nor use blogs. I just need some time. Feel free to review any content to ensure its notable and, if not, no objections to deleting it post my changes.
Please note how I've changed the way you indented your message. Also note you need to sign your messages please by typing four tildes at the end. This isn't a directory. Not every subject gets an article. Please see WP:N and WP:GNG. If after reading those links you think this subject meets those standards, you are free to remove the PROD template. If you do, I'll review your changes and possibly refer it to the next step in the deletion process. John from Idegon (talk) 21:14, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello John from Idegon,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Reverts on the edit

Hi @John from Idegon:, I had made that edit because I was still working on the draft. I am not ignoring the advice; however, I was still researching the stated fact to find a more reliable and independent source to back it up. I had not submitted it for review and might have reverted it myself. I want to do it right this time, as you can see the number of reviews are just cluttered on the page at the moment.

I am trying to follow the suggestions provided in the Teahouse discussion and the reviews. But, my concern comes from the fact that each time I've followed reviewer suggestions, another reviewer has given me something entirely different. So far, I've heard 'too many sources, remove PR, leave independent ones' (I did this, but to no use); 'add more independent sources' (I did that, but it was neither checked, nor acknowledged except in the Teahouse discussion based on which I made my last edit in the draft); and 'the subject might be notable, fix inline citations' (I did this, but the draft was still rejected).

I hope you can see why this is frustrating. I've spent considerable time in researching this article and I want it to be published. Like all of you other editors, I am volunteering my time and energy to contribute to Wikipedia. I want to do this by the rules of Wikipedia and follow the guidelines, but then I've come to realize that many editors here are not in agreement about the policies and guidelines. There are subjective differences between established editors. I am new here, so I might be wrong about this. But, there are several discussions and debates on Wikipedia to indicate that this is an ongoing issue and other editors feel this way, as well.

I really do hope you understand that I am trying to do the same thing that you are. There is a learning curve, and I am trying my best to learn what I can. Thank you for your reviews, suggestions, and help. FelixtheNomad (talk) 22:12, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

I do understand. You need to be understand that everyone here (everyone) is a volunteer. There is no "management" in the traditional sense. We run "bottom up", not "top down". So no one can be directed to anything in any way. We have rules that govern interaction and content. And they are intentionally vague. If you want to succeed here, it's 100% up to you to garner the knowledge to do so. And it is hard to do that. It's expected that you understand some concepts that go beyond Wikipedia. Like the difference between primary, secondary and tertiary sources. It's on you to ask the questions you need to understand what you are doing. There is a lot to grasp, it's likely different than any group effort you have ever undertaken and it isn't intuitive. More like counterintuitive. No individual editor can change that for you. You've been given a bunch of resources to help you succeed. It's on you to do so. John from Idegon (talk) 18:48, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Saint Bernard's High School Article

Hello,

I received your message about the article St. Bernard's High School. I appreciate your feedback and advice. I am still confused, however, on how I should approach writing this article. I looked over the guideline that you linked, and I'm still not sure what makes a sufficient Wikipedia article about a school. Should I abandon the award section of the article because it may not be notable enough? And should I avoid listing the sports they offer? Please let me know. Thank you for your help.

Hi John from Idegon, I am wondering if you could provide some suggestions as to making this article meet the criteria of Wikipedia. Should I avoid listing the sports they offer, delete the award section and adding more history about the school? What kind of information would serve as an encyclopedia? Please let me know. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Not WP:OWNERSHIP, but WP:STEWARDSHIP, i.e. protecting an article one has contributed a great deal to (i.e. 72.6% of the content) from changes which do not improve it.

And -- just in case you may have forgotten -- you are not an Admin, and your own behavior over the last 11 months doesn't exactly qualify you to lecture (or threaten) others from a position of moral superiority.

If you wish to respond, please do so here, where I can ignore it more easily. Do not respond on my talk page, it will be deleted without reading.

@PhillyHarold: You and John from Idegon have edited six articles in common. At three of those articles, more than a month passed between your edits. At Richland High School (Texas), John from Idegon made his first edit seven years before you joined Wikipedia, and at Thurgood Marshall High School (Texas) and Haltom High School, John from Idegon made his first edit three years before you joined Wikipedia. PhillyHarold, most editors see changes in their watchlist, and edit those articles soon after. This happens very frequently. It's all good. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:42, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Oak Park River Forest High School reversion

Hi, with this reversion you said to "Provide reliable published secondary sources"; yet, the old revision didn't do that either, and the citation that the old version primarily used was a dead link. Given the specificity of the topic, would such primary sources be allowed? Would it be acceptable to find a newspaper article that mentions a performance at the school and only a small number of the musical groups listed? Maybe something like that in addition to the primary sources? Coolreader18 (talk) 05:29, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

The entire section is way overblown and promotional. No, you'll need reliable secondary sources for all of it, and there will be nothing whatsoever added that isn't in the source. To write encyclopedic content, paraphrase reliable secondary sources and cite them. If there is no reliable secondary sources for the information, that in itself is enough to indicate that content doesn't belong. John from Idegon (talk) 10:55, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello John. I saw that you had declined one of my submissions. I was thinking about finding more references and had the following question: Would a Wikipedia article work as a reliable source? Or is it not secondary? And what information requires the sources? Thanks,Moonlandingwasahoax (talk) 18:32, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia is actually tertiary, but isn't considered reliable because it is user edited. What needs sources? Everything. An encyclopedia article is made up entirely by material paraphrased from reliable sources. John from Idegon (talk) 18:44, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

John Doe No. 24

This needs to be put back in mainspace. It was approved by me out of AfC. Spelling and grammar issues are not to decline or hold back an article from mainspace, much less is it a reason to re-draftify one. If you have issues with the spelling or grammar then add the appropriate maintenance tags. Sulfurboy (talk) 18:32, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Dude, you need to seriously chill. Literally, SLOW THE FUCK DOWN. You've not even giving people time to respond. You do not have a consensus to move this to mainspace so don't. NPP is a thing too. This article is on a notable subject. NPP declines articles for reasons other than notability all the time. Your claim is without merit. Your insertion of an image of a gravestone as the lead image of a biography is inappropriate. Not to mention inserted improperly. Direct any further questions on how to edit to WP:TEAHOUSE. Any edit you make is subject to editing or removal at any time. Content is decided by consensus advised by rules. If you think your substandard edit improved the article, make your case at the article's talk page. A read of WP:RS would be in order too. John from Idegon (talk) 03:33, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
