Fraternities at The University of Western Ontario

[edit]

There are currently eight fraternities at The University of Western Ontario. Delta Upsilon, Phi Gamma Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha, Zeta Psi, Sigma Chi, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and Kappa Alpha. There is also a Phi Delta Theta colony at the university. In 2013, the University’s Inter-fraternity Council launched the collaborative website for every fraternity life on campus, www.RushWeek.ca.

Delta Upsilon

The Western-Ontario Chapter of Delta Upsilon was colonized in 1931. Prior to this, the fraternity was a local organization known as Sigma Kappa Sigma. The fraternity remained strong until the early 2000s. At this point, the chapter’s house was condemned after failing to meet city standards and over $40,000 of housing fines was owed. As they were on the verge of shutting down, The Discovery Channel’s Canada’s Worst Handyman agreed to pay off the remainder of the fines in exchange for allowing them to shoot their 5th season at the house. Since then, the chapter has begun a resurgence and currently has 41 members.

The Delta Upsilon house currently holds 13 brothers and is located at 294 Central Avenue.

There are many prominent Western alumni from this chapter, the main one’s being Richard Ivey, Peter Fowler, Don Wright, C.B. Johnson, Brett Channer, and Alan Thicke.

Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI)

The Lambda Omega Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was founded in 1968 at the University of Western Ontario. The chapter remained strong until it’s closing in 2004. In early 2009, FIJI recruited 34 men to become the new Founding Fathers of the Lambda Omega Colony. On February 5th, 2011, the Lambda Omega Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta received their Charter making them the 120th Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta.

The FIJI house currently holds 8 brothers and is located at 116 Mill Street.

Pi Kappa Alpha

On April 9, 1994, the Iota Omega chapter Pi Kappa Alpha was founded at the University of Western Ontario. The chapter remained strong until 1998. Between 1998 and 2002, the chapter’s number declined heavily; however, since then the chapter steadily grown.

The Pike house currently holds 8 brothers and is located at 130 Kent Street.

Lambda Chi Alpha

The Delta-Eta chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha was colonized in 1991 at the University of Western Ontario. After two years, the organization was granted their charter on November 6th, 2009.

The Lambda Chi house currently holds 8 brothers.

Zeta Psi

The Zeta Psi Chapter colonized at the University of Western Ontario in 2013.

Sigma Chi

The Epsilon Omicron chapter of Sigma Chi was founded at the University of Western Ontario in 1957.

The Sigma Chi house currently holds 9 brothers and is located at 565 Rideout Street North.\

Kappa Alpha

The Kappa Alpha Society opened its chapter at the University of Western Ontario in 1948. The Kappa Alpha Society grew in both size and stature at the University of Western Ontario, but was met with considerable struggle in 1972, when their residence was destroyed by two major fires. Though the numbers of KA have been withering on a yearly basis, they have remained an active chapter at the University.

The Kappa Alpha house currently holds 6 brothers and is located at 132 John Street.

Prominent alumni of this chapter include John P. Labatt to James B. Collip.
