Recent changes
- You can use the new termbox interface if you edit Wikidata on a mobile device. This is to edit labels, descriptions and aliases easier on the mobile pages. [1]
- The new version of MediaWiki has been deployed during the last week.
- The previously announced change of positions of the "Wikidata item" link on all wikis has been rollbacked due to unexpected cache issues. [2]
- The limit for rollbacks has been increased from 10 to 100 rollbacks per minute. [3]
- The advanced version of the edit review pages (Recent Changes, Watchlist, and Related Changes) now include two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces. However the "All discussions" filter does not include pseudo talk pages, like discussions that are in the Project: or Wikipedia: namespaces. But it will include changes happening on Project talk: or the Wikipedia talk:. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 September. It will be on all wikis from 5 September (calendar).
- When you log in, the software checks your password to see if it follows the Password policy. From this week, it will also complain if your password is one of the most common passwords in the world. If your password is not strong enough, please consider to change your password for a stronger password. [5]
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 4 September at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikidata for up to 30 minutes on September 10 at 05:00 (UTC). [6]
- You will be able to read but not to edit some mid-sized wikis for up to 30 minutes September 17 at 05:00 (UTC). You can see which wikis. [7]

- A request for comment is open to provide an opportunity to amend the structure, rules, and procedures of the 2019 English Wikipedia Arbitration Committee election and to resolve any issues not covered by existing rules.
- A global request for comment is in progress regarding whether a user group should be created that could modify edit filters across all public Wikimedia wikis.
Hi Keith. Please could you kindly have a look at the history of the above article, and give me some idea what to do? The article started as a biography of killer Kate Dover, and included her trial. Paired with it was a biography of the victim, Thomas Skinner. In response to criticism on the article's DYK template, I changed the title to the name of the trial. I then received criticism that the murder victim had an article, the trial had an article, but the killer did not. So, because we had plenty of biography material on the killer, I split the trial article into Trial of Kate Dover and Kate Dover. There is now a single persistent editor who wants to keep changing the header of the Kate Dover article - as far as I can make out, these edits are removing individual notability of Kate Dover so that her biography can be re-merged back into the trial article. I fear that if I do re-merge the biography back into the trial article, the whole circle will go around again. At the moment, everyone seems to be happy with three articles Kate Dover (killer), Trial of Kate Dover, and Thomas Skinner (etcher) (victim). Only one person is constantly arguing for a re-merge and is apparently editing the article to fit that requirement. So what do I do? At the moment I really need to work on the article properly, with more research and clarification of Kate Dover as a stand-alone biography, but this interference is obstructing my work. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 10:01, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, I have had a look but unsure as to what you can now do apart from see the outcome of the RFC that it looks like the other editor has started, though this is not clear from the text. Personally I would go with the separate articles as they were split out as a result of comments by others and there is just a single editor wanting to head for a merge. Probably not much help to you at the moment. Keith D (talk) 20:35, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, Keith. I asked for your assistance because in the past your advice has been very neutral, and because where I have disagreed with your opinion I have nevertheless cooperated with it on the grounds that neutral advice counts. So thank you for your reply, even though you cannot help at the moment. I value an honest reply.
- Meanwhile, regarding the current RFC, as you will have seen, I just want to be able to cooperate and help to resolve any problems. Please could you tell me whether the the RFC is officially preventing me from editing the body of the Kate Dover article, or whether it refers only to the header? If I can perhaps userfy a copy of the body of the article and get it more in line with what the commentators want, then I can resolve a lot of the disjunction which has arisen between header and article-body.
- I should add that the last time I was bullied like that (on William Swinden Barber) it stressed me out to the point that I left WP for a year or two, and that was a pity. I had been helping out a lot as a DYK reviewer (not just QPQs), and of course there is my heavy contribution to Commons. Tomorrow if I am lucky I shall be able to go to Leeds and photograph part of a set of caricatures which had been lost, to contribute to a planned article on a group of artists who were instrumental to the creation of Leeds Art Gallery. I also know where more of their lost art is, and am working on getting a chance to photograph that for Commons. (All C19 and out of copyright of course). But I am only human, and these people don't realise that if they bully a useful contributor, they will lose contributions to WP that no-one else is going to make. So far my WP research has informed English Heritage sufficiently to list two buildings, and has informed Leeds Civic Trust sufficiently to produce two blue plaques for Leeds. So these WP bullies don't realise what they are undermining here. Storye book (talk) 21:27, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
- The RFC appears to be concentrating on just the lead so I would say that edits to the body of the article are OK and not covered by the RFC. Keith D (talk) 21:56, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

MfD nomination of Portal:Lincolnshire
Portal:Lincolnshire, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Lincolnshire and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Portal:Lincolnshire during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. British to English
A user, using different accounts and IP address, has started repeatedly changing and edit warring to change the lead description on articles from English to British with no genuine reason. They appear to have been based in Holland, but are now back in Brighton and have since opened 2 different accounts.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Politovsky https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Capristic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/135.196.181.166 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/81.205.147.245
A prime example of the pov pushing of this editior using the 81.205.147.245 IP - "If his mum is Irish, his dad is Welsh, and he was born in Wales, he is definitely not "English". And your info about his birthplace is conflicting. First you say he was born in Newport, Gwent and then you say he was born in Avonmouth, Bristol. Mistakes happen, but you should not automatically refer to people as "English". That word is a dreadful insult to many". The reference on the article has Evans referring to himself as English. I thought the days of this nonsense on Wikipedia were over. I don't know what to do in this situation, and as an IP editor I doubt I'd be taken that seriously but would appreciate it if you could look into this issue as it is clearly wrong. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:BAC5:7800:E41A:A943:7B18:773C (talk) 12:38, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Lunar magma ocean article
Hi Keith, I'm new to editing Wikipedia and I'm currently working on the Lunar magma ocean article. It would be great if you could kindly give me a few pointers on how to improve the article. Viranga13 (talk) 03:00, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, the article is way outside my field, but the obvious need of the article is to make it understandable to the average person. There needs to be some links to articles that give explanation of the various terms used or notes added to the article. Another problem with the article is the title should it be Lunar Magma Ocean as used in the text or should the text be de-capitalised as per existing title? Hope this helps. Keith D (talk) 08:44, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
Thank you! Please let me know if certain areas of the article need to be made clearer. I just looked through this Wikipedia editing guideline page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Make_technical_articles_understandable and I'll do my best to make the subject as accessible as possible. As for the title, the term that is generally used in the planetary science community is Lunar Magma Ocean. It seems that proper names should be capitalized on Wikipedia articles, but I'm not quite sure how to do that. Viranga13 (talk) 01:20, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- There is a Move button/tab, depending on what interface you are using, to move a page. You can also request it at WP:RM which is probably easier. Further details on moving pages can be found at WP:MOVE. Keith D (talk) 10:39, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Lincolnshire portal
A tag has been placed on Category:Lincolnshire portal requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Thanks! Question
Hello Keith D, thank you for your clean up on citations of the Quibi Wikipedia page. The entertainment industry as a whole is experiencing major disruption and companies like Quibi are at the forefront of innovation. It is exciting that the community cares of it enough to build a page around them. I am seeking to try my hand at creating a few more Wikipedia pages within the same field of disruption. Could I run them by since you are a glorious administrator of Wikipedia or should I just reference WP:CORP and submit for review? Thank you. Grimothy29 (talk) 21:27, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
- If they can pass WP:CORP then you are OK to submit them for review as they should pass, though it may take a little time to get through the process. I can cast an eye over for obvious problems in the layout/formatting that may help the process. Keith D (talk) 22:41, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Article creation
Hi, I'm trying to create an article for Great Wolford, but it's already blue linked and backs to a list page. Any idea how I can get around this. Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 18:49, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, if you have an article already that needs moving then you will have to request deletion of the redirect under WP:G6. If you mean that you want to create it then you can get back to the redirect by clicking on the "(Redirected from Great Wolford)" link at the top of the list page. You can then edit the redirect in the normal way. Hope this helps. Keith D (talk) 19:21, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks Keith. Done it... but I don't know how I did. I've done that redirect thing before, but this time it seemed more complicated and obscure. Acabashi (talk) 19:41, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
Kate Dover again
Hi Keith. Please could I ask you to please kindly keep an eye on the above article and its talk page? I am happy to re-edit and correct the article in response to constructive criticism, and I plan to do that next week when I am free to take time to do it properly without errors. However there are two editors on the talk page who appear to have a vexatious attitude, and I fear that they may make it difficult for me to make the major edit on the article that they appear to want. I am also concerned about being made to edit the article under duress by two people who want to delete the article. Due to this particular stress I have already stopped creating articles, as I have mentioned before, because the articles that I create usually take months of work, travel and often expense, and I cannot do that if they are going to follow me and threaten deletions again. As before, I don't ask you to agree with or support anything I may say about the article - I just want to be able to improve the article without being under duress or being afraid. Storye book (talk) 20:26, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- It is absolutely inappropriate to suggest that I am placing you under duress and followed you around and threatened deletion, or that @Pincrete: (who literally just commented on the article for the first time through the RfC) is doing the same. Feel free to disagree with my opinions or other editors' opinions about the content of the article. Feel free to not respond to myself or other editors. But don't throw around accusations of hounding and intimidation when there is no evidence whatsoever. This is the first time that I am commenting on anything related to you that is not the article itself, besides my previous clarification on this perception issue, and this is because you are now casting aspersions about other editors' conduct. — MarkH21 (talk) 20:37, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- I will watchlist it and see if there is any obvious problems with the edits. Though I will be away for 10 days without internet access while up in Hull. Keith D (talk) 20:42, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- @ Keith D. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 21:00, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- @ MarkH21. If you were to read my comment properly, you would see that I was writing about how things appeared, how I felt, and how I was coping. I didn't say that you were following me; I was afraid of being followed, as you have followed me here. I honestly don't think you realise the effect of what you write, sometimes. Storye book (talk) 21:00, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Storye book: I absolutely understood that, but it is still casting aspersions nonetheless. But you should realize that
... if they are going to follow me and threaten deletions again
implies that the other editor and I have already been doing so, andI am also concerned about being made to edit the article under duress
can imply that you are in fact being made to edit the article under duress.
Even without those clearer implications, one cannot go to third-party venues and say "X appears to be racist", "I am worried about X editing with a ferocious political agenda", "I am concerned about X hounding others" without implicitly accusing X behind their back.
Again, as I hoped my previous attempt would clarify, my expressed opinions about the article are about the content and current state of the article. Please understand that, if you still believe that I may follow you around to threaten deletion everywhere.
By the way, use{{Ping|user}}
to ping users, as the@
symbol does not do anything. — MarkH21 (talk) 21:14, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Storye book: I absolutely understood that, but it is still casting aspersions nonetheless. But you should realize that
- @ MarkH21. If you were to read my comment properly, you would see that I was writing about how things appeared, how I felt, and how I was coping. I didn't say that you were following me; I was afraid of being followed, as you have followed me here. I honestly don't think you realise the effect of what you write, sometimes. - @ Keith D. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 21:00, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
With reference to the above subject, I would like to ask you if is possible that you revise my draft and publish it. I am working on a university project and my teacher says that he won't revise any draft(he only grades articles). Nevertheless, he gave us 4 weeks while the revision period can last until 8 weeks! Would you mind helping me? Thank you BQUB19 OPortals (talk) 13:46, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, I can fix some formatting problems with the article but the content will need someone who knows about the subject. Keith D (talk) 21:29, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you! BQUB19 OPortals (talk) 17:07, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
Dear Keith Top of the day to you! I'm at loss at the orphan tag you placed on the above named article on 12th October 2019. Could you kindly put me through? Warm regards. 2dmaxo (talk) 11:05, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, the tag indicates that there are no wikilinks in any other article to this article. You need to add links to this page to allow others to find it. You can see the links by clicking on the "What links here" link, when on the article, under the "tools" menu. The location of the link depends on the interface that you are using. Once you have added a couple of links the tag can be removed. Keith D (talk) 11:36, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Future changes
- There will be no software changes from 19 December to 2 January. The first MediaWiki version next year will come the week of 6 January. [23]

tomw.config
. The old global variables will be removed later this year. You can know more about it and tell the developers if you want to try this out on your wiki first.
