Question

[edit]

I see from the guidelines that there is a 'Move' function. I can't see this on pages I'm editing? How can I get this working? Kernel Saunters 09:38, 12 April 2007 (UTC) {helpme}[reply]

Hello, your account must be at least four days old before you can use the move tool. The tool will appear between the "history" and "watch" tabs near the top center of the screen. In the meantime, if you want a page moved, let me know. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 10:12, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tomaz Ribas

[edit]

Thanks for catching the uncat tag and miscategorization on this article... my eyes locked on "(Spain)" even though I fully well know Lisbon is in Portugal.  :-) RTucker 18:08, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

People from Scarborough category

[edit]

I'm a bit confused about how you have re-jigged the People from Scarborough category. I think I can see what you were trying to do, but you seem to have shifted the ambiguity rather than removing it. The Canadian one is fine but I would suggest renaming the English one to People from Scarborough, North Yorkshire or People from Scarborough, England. People from Scarborough should then be an empty category used as a disambiguation page (see the category People from Birmingham as an example of this). I guess you may have planned to do this anyway - let me know if you need a hand. Cheers. --Jameboy 20:28, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's are few bits of tidying up needed - also [Category:People from Bradford by settlement]] seems like overkill. I'll give a considered response to Scarb cat a bit later as this raises a few questions.... Kernel Saunters 23:56, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uncategori*ed people

[edit]

Thanks for helping to categorize articles. Just thought I'd mention that Category:Uncategorised people should be used instead of Category:Uncategorized people.--Fisherjs 20:45, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - will do so in future. Thanks for the heads up Kernel Saunters 21:12, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ranks not used as titles

[edit]

Hi Kernel. I noticed that you edited Harold Alexander's page and put the ranks in upper case. The Manual of Style says that in those cases the ranks should be lower case. Hope that helps. Leithp 18:52, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A bit of a shame we can't use British grammar for British people? Kernel Saunters 18:54, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I'm aware British custom is the same as the MoS. See this obituary for an example of it's usage. Leithp 19:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good point - I'll take that on board. Thanks Kernel Saunters 19:20, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kernel Saunters. Since you spoke up at WP:AN that you thought we should have a real article on this man, the wheels have turned, and a restored version is now sitting in User:EdJohnston/VB. Please let me know if you think it's an acceptable version. Frankly, I'm not keen on putting this back because the subject of the article gave us such a hard time the first time around (see explanation in the WP:AN entry). If you think it's worthwhile, can you tell me if you'd like to make further changes, before it's put back in main space? Thanks, EdJohnston 23:40, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think there should be some additional clarification of why he was protesting - it reads like his criminal record at the moment. There seems to be loads of his quotes in the sources that could be used. Kernel Saunters 12:55, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want to enhance the article? It seems to me that it needs a champion, because I expect that the subject V. B. will get busy and start trashing the article again if it goes back into main space. Are you someone who could keep an eye on it? There is a case that could be made under WP:BLP to not have an article at all, so the question is, is it worth the effort, and is this man significant enough to justify the work on our part? EdJohnston 13:49, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I have the time to take this one on. I would say in the absence of a champion and the blp concerns, my choice would be a protected redirect to The Freedom to be Yourself article. Kernel Saunters 13:59, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is now done. I've also placed a citation request at that article, if there's a good source at hand. Chick Bowen 20:38, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Kernel Saunters 20:46, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see no reason that this should have been done. Just because Vincent has manipulated his page doesn't mean the page should be pulled. Its very hard to find comprehensive NPOV information about this man. He is one of the most significant figures in the clothes free movement, spawning several organizations across the globe. Please rethink this decision. Thank you. User:Dandelion (talk|contribs) 23:39, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to write an referenced NPOV article about Bethell, please go ahead - the previous article read like his criminal record as I stated about so the point was that the article as was was v. poor. Happy to review any proposed new version. Kernel Saunters 09:18, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What was your meaning when adding |Chicken, Grorge Bell to the Clogstoun article. I have deleted it as i did not think it had any meaning. If i am mistaken please do tell me. Thanks Woodym555 15:22, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was a cut and paste gone wrong! Thanks for spotting that. Kernel Saunters 16:42, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Category overlap

[edit]

I noticed you made a change to an article on my watchlist to make "Category:German veterans of World War I" into "Category:German military personnel of World War I". There also is a "Category:German people of World War I". There seems to be considerable overlap here, as the latter includes apparently more military than civilian personnel. I wonder if ity makes sense to move "Category:German people of World War I" to another name to make it clear that it only applies to civilians, and moving the military personnel in that category to "Category:German military personnel of World War I"? I have no idea how to create or rename a category, as opposed to an article. Airbornelawyer 20:52, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All military personnel will be moved to Category:German military personnel of World War I. I've only had time to change the veteran cat today. I'll do that sometime this week hopefully with AWB. It should be clear that the military cat is a subset of German people once military people have been cleared out. Kernel Saunters 21:07, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Overcategorisation

[edit]

Could you please assume good faith on this article and refrain from accusing me of edit warring I feel that this catagory should be included can you explain to me why it should not be in the article.--BigDunc 09:59, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MacManus is categorised correctly as being from Sligo -. Review the overcategorisation policy for details - it is very clear. Please also review your edit summaries - you need to leave one for every edit you make. If you revert changes multiple times without explantion this is considered edit warring 10:06, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

You still have not explained how it is overcategorisation one is a link to Sligo which is not the most famous of towns in Ireland so people would want to know about it and the other is people so please explain or stop removing my edit. And I will review my edit summaries.BigDunc 10:21, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New category created - this should solve this issue to everyones satisfaction. Kernel Saunters 10:40, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That was a far from satisfactory cat you inserted see no reason for taking out the Sligo cat as it is a minor county in Ireland and a link to tell the reader about the county is doing no harm and also the list of people from Sligo is also relevant to a reader interesed in this article.BigDunc 18:27, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1882 Anglo-Egyptian War

[edit]

I'm of a mind to revise a category I created Category:People of the Urabi Revolt to category:People of the Anglo Egyptian War. Would you have a preference here? Kernel Saunters 19:32, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is a good idea. But I suggest People of the 1882 Anglo Egyptian War to distinguish it clearly from 1956. Incidentally, having this category is a good idea.--Toddy1 05:26, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

British officers etc

[edit]

I have no problem with eliminating Category:British officers in the American Revolution and dumping the contents into Category:British military personnel of the American Revolutionary War. I just saw that the former looked well-populated, so I thought I should subcat out the few officers in the latter. But I don't have any sentimental attachment to the category itself.
