Potential conflict on where US 395 Alternate becomes US 395 Business
LJ, In the exit list for U.S. Route 395 in Nevada it is stated that US 395 Alternate becomes US 395 Business at Exit 57 along I-580. However, the KML file at U.S. Route 395 Alternate has the changeover at exit 61. Per my memory the Exit list is right and the KML file is wrong. However, do you know what NDOT is officially saying on the subject? I just discovered this discrepancy after reverting what I thought were erroneous IP edits. I just want to know if I need to eat crow or not. =-) Dave (talk) 19:10, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- It's tough... NDOT just converted all of the former SR 430 segment to US 395A, so the alternate route ends officially at Patriot Blvd (just north of the exit 61). I think this was done for ease of bookkeeping for NDOT--I don't believe the alternate route is signed north of exit 57. NDOT doesn't officially maintain all of the business route (which is sparsely signed anyway), so it's tougher to verify its extents--NDOT doesn't have a public log tracking any of the US or Interstate business routes since so many are either not maintained or cosigned as other state highways. However, I believe the AASHTO approval for US 395 Business from several years ago runs along all of Virginia St in Reno down to the SR 341/431 junction, and it was signed southbound several years ago as ending just north of exit 57. So officially, I believe they overlap. I personally think it would have been better for NDOT to retain SR 430 or reclassify Virginia St officially as US 395B between exits 57 & 61. LJ ↗ 11:44, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- This is the edit in question. Sounds like it could be argued either way. Feel free to do with that as you wish. I'm not going to worry about it. Dave (talk) 21:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

You're pretty good with Nevada roads
I was wondering if you'd know how to clarify something about where exactly the terminus for a certain highway lies. That certain highway happens to be Nevada State Route 377, which I just recently created a KML for. The article just says the highway ends in Manhattan, there's no StreetView (so I can't look for an END SR 377 sign), and the county map in that PDF in the references is no help. Would you know how to find the exact terminus? Thanks. TCN7JM 02:03, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- NDOT doesn't always do a good job of ending routes at an easy to find point, so it does take some investigation. The most recent State Maintained Highways book simply says "from SR 376/Tonopah-Austin Road to 6.597 miles east in Manhattan", so that's not any real help. With no other major references readily available from NDOT (such as a straight-line diagram or milepost log), it does make determining SR termini a pain sometimes.
- NDOT does have an area map for Manhattan which shows a fairly defined point of where the route ends...of course, it's not at an intersection or other easily-identifiable feature. Going on to Google Maps using the streets on the NDOT Manhattan map as a reference, I believe point "B" on these Google Maps Directions is the official end of SR 377. Note two clues when looking at the satellite imagery that seem to denote the maintenance boundary: 1) there appears to be a visible change in pavement quality (east of here the pavement is in considerably worse condition), and 2) the white edge line disappears here.
- An interesting note with this one is that Google says the route is only 6.4 miles long, not the nearly 6.6 miles referenced in the SMH book. However, NDOT has been intermittently reviewing contract plans/stationing/files over the past few years, and updating highway lengths in the SMH book and MP panels in the field—thus, it is entirely possible that the length stated in the SMH book is inaccurate.
- Hope all that helped! -- LJ ↗ 02:58, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Wow, that helps a lot. Thanks! It seems I've made the KML a fraction of a mile too long, so I'll make sure to edit it to make it a bit shorter sometime soon. Again, thanks. TCN7JM 03:46, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

A new resource
You might find Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Resources/AASHTO minutes and its companion template, {{AASHTO minutes}} handy. We've found a database of AASHTO's meeting minutes and uploaded separate copies of files not previously available from 1967–88. Imzadi 1979 → 10:08, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
