Macrocystis pyrifera

This is not found on any island, and so cannot be part of the island's flora. It is categorized in "Flora of the Pacific", and could be categorized as present in other oceans where it occurs, but is not terrestiral. It is also not productive to list an organism in every minor category into which it could be placed. A widespread species like Pteridium aqulinum would then be placed in multiple state, province, and country categories. It is better to list such items in the most broad categories only, and if a regional flora is desired, that is better handled as a list than with categories. --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:56, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Interesting comment - which to me, in my ignorance regarding the conventions, raises many questions. With regard to your first statement - does it mean that plants (mostly seaweeds I guess) whose attachments to the substrate (holdfasts) are below low tide level cannot be considered part of an island's flora? Giant Kelp and similar plants are certainly associated with islands - as they are not free floating and require the islands to attach to (even if below normal low tides). It suggests that the island does not exist below sea level. Can islands not have a marine flora, or is that term applied only to oceans? Does the same convention apply to fauna - such as reef fishes?

Secondly, I do agree with you about overcategorisation. I am not interested in political categories for biota, but isolated islands are ecological units and it seems that it might be useful to mention the fact that a particular taxon occurs on (or maybe at) a particular island, especially if it has some significant connection to it - such as breeding there, or being ecologically important locally for other organisms. Regarding the first point: Are migratory marine mammals part of the "fauna" of all the lands by which they pass? If a particular octopus is found throughout the Mediterranean Sea, does that make it a part of the European and African fauna? Biologists are notoriously inconsistent about this. And those that would include such animals as part of the fauna would still probably not include the local marine diatoms, dinoflagellates, and other phytoplankton as part of the flora. In general, I would not include marine organisms as part of an island's flora and fauna unless they were at least intertidal.

Distributional information should appear in a map or as text in the article. Categorization into all the numerous islands around the Pacific would not be a beneficial activity. It seems that an arbitrary line must be drawn somewhere, even though it gives rise to anomalies. Leaving aside cosmopolitan organisms that may occur anywhere along the edges of an ocean, with regard to oceanic islands surrounded by deep water, I would have thought it logical to think of plants and animals tied to its shallow-water habitats, such as reefs or kelp forests, as being components of the flora or fauna of such islands. What about those that are endemic to (the immediate surrounds of) one such island? I find it interesting that we demand clean-cut categories when nature has ares of fuzzy overlap. Cheers. Many thanks for your helpful assistance with editing. The only change I would like to make is to the Lead. WP policy says (whether the lead meets the criteria below is one matter) that the lead consist of no more than 4 paragraphs. I have adjusted it accordingly:

The 'lead section' (also known as the 'introduction, lead, or lede^[1]) of a Wikipedia article is the section before the table of contents and the first heading. The lead serves both as an introduction to the article and as a summary of its most important aspects. The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview of the article. It should define the topic, establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points—including any prominent controversies. The emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic, according to reliable, published sources, and the notability of the article's subject should usually be established in the first few sentences.

While consideration should be given to creating interest in reading more of the article, the lead should nevertheless not "tease" the reader by hinting at—but not explaining—important facts that will appear later in the article. The lead should contain no more than four paragraphs, must be carefully sourced as appropriate, and should be written in a clear, accessible style with a neutral point of view to invite a reading of the full article. Funny - when one first comes across Wikipedia the immediate reaction is to think "Wow! So much stuff covered" -even if often a little imperfectly. After being here for a while one sees increasing gaps and areas of empty space. Every time I complete an article the redlinks appear and demand attention.   I am sure that it is not wrong. However, since the article is about a subspecies, I would be careful about putting in general information that refers to the species. Since you need references for the information in the artticle, it is usually best to put in information where the source refers unambiguously to the subspecies the article is about, or at least makes it clear that it applies to all subspecies.

• I intend to create an article on Eastern Peregrine Falcon soon. Then is it ok if I write it in the See also section of the Shaheen Falcon article?

  I think it is great that you are doing an article on another subspecies. No problems with a link in a 'see also' section.

Striped Honeyeater

Thanks for rating Striped Honeyeater However I'm suprised at the C-Class. "The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains a lot of irrelevant material. The article should have references to reliable sources, but may still have significant issues or require substantial cleanup."

The DYK reviewer described it as an "excellent article" and it is very similar to the Red-headed Honeyeater and Black Honeyeater which I recently took from stub to Good Article. Just happy that someone else is taking an active interest in them. You are quite right about local strategies; making a site an IBA confers nothing in the way of protection directly, but some state and territory conservation departments do take note of them to a greater or lesser extent. I came here after seeing your removal of the IBA cat from Richardson Bay[1]. I agree with moving the US pages to states, but there is no California cat now. Are you getting ready for a big bot project, or are you hoping for more volunteers to set up the state cats and start populating them?--Hjal (talk) 19:20, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Richardson Bay's page at Audubon is here:[2]. It's not a snap to turn these up--I don't see a simple list at the Audubon page linked at Important Bird Areas[3]. There is a link at the bottom of that page to a new map and database that will get you to the Richardson Bay page and let you see the area on a zoomable map of California. Some are easier to find at BLI's site[4], where you can click to see regional lists of IBAs. Here is the list for the 200+ sites in the U.S. as of 2009.[5] The IBL site itself does not seem to have all of the sites identified by Audubon in their seachable database, and even fewer on the zoomable world map. For California it doesn't show anything in California except the Salton Sea on the map. The pdf for the US only shows sites in a few states and only the southern part of California. Their national lists only seem to show sites of "global importance," and not all of those, yet. Perhaps WP should have a list article on the IBAs of Global significance and use cats for the others, unless editors are up to making state and national level lists. I removed the image from Charles Darwin Reserve as it wasn't taken on the reserve, but 703 km away. That's a long way away. I hope you don't mind. Please feel free to add whatever images you have of the reserve; thery would indeed be highly appropriate. Meanwhile I have added images of creatures found on the reserve - as images of the animals, not of the reserve - to illustrate what might be found there. Please do not assume that such illustrative additions need necessarily toi be sourced from the reserve, though it would be nice if they were. This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list.
