Maketaton's edit
Sorry I canceled the name of Nefertiti because in 2012 an hieratic inscription in a limestone quarry dated to the sixteenth year of Akhenaten was discovered and mentions Nefertiti still alive. Rudi Rio (talk) 03:12, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
That's fine! You are correct to remove Nefertiti. I didn't revert your edit, that was someone else because you did not cite a source. I have removed Nefertiti and cited the relevant source.Merytat3n (talk) 10:12, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

About this edit, I can't see any of these titles on the infobox. I don't think the template allows the change/addition.--Mark Miller (talk) 01:35, 8 September 2019 (UTC) OK, I am going to revert that only because the manner the hieroglyphs are added not apear accurate from the sources. See talk page.--Mark Miller (talk) 01:38, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
- Does this source actually show the depictions? I can't see the preview.--Mark Miller (talk) 01:45, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
No it does not (which is a strike against it imo, still an excellent source but hieroglyphs are key). I got the hieroglyphs from here not using the variants, and they correspond with the titulary given in Appendix 3 pg 173 of 'Amarna Sunset' by Aidan Dodson. He gives the hieroglyphs and the transliteration but does not give the translation. He gives the two 2 variations of the Nebty name which are both under 'Variants' on the pharaoh.se link instead of the main simpler one. Merytat3n (talk) 01:56, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
- I believe the first source is circular and gets its information from Wikipedia as it uses the exact templating that the name has on the automated template geared towards making Egyptian titular however, the brackets used in the Horus name are not accurate as, from what I understand (and sources seem to verify but god help me trying to find that again) that by the eighteenth dynasty the bracketing on the Horus name was no longer in use. Also, the falcon sits atop the palace plan and is supposed to be depicted with the crown of upper and lower Egypt. If you can find me a source with the correct hieroglyphs or point me to an artifact or artifacts that I can get the proper characters, I can create an svg file like what is on the "Reign" section. That already existed but I did have to make corrections. I have that source in book form and can clearly see the mistakes made in the SVG that would probably alter the meaning.--Mark Miller (talk) 02:07, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
An artefact that has his full titulary is the cedar throne Carter obj. No 87 JE 62029 here. It uses the Horus name in serekhs as a central design motif. The full titulary is given on the back of the backrest but is unusually written as it gives an image of the king as a determinative for 'twt' image. I'm getting this info from p 61-62 of The Thrones, Chairs, Stools, and Footstools from the Tomb of Tutankhamun by M. Eaton-Krauss. She cites herself for a fuller discussion of his titulary in 'The Titulary of Tutankhamun' in: Jürgen Osing and Günter Dreyer, eds, Form und Mass. Beiträge zur Literatur, Sprache und Kunst des alten Ägypten (Fs Gerhard Fecht; Wiesbaden 19 which sounds absolutely impossible to get a hold of.Merytat3n (talk) 02:30, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

- I don't usually think of myself as an old timer here but when I was checking the Wikipedia Awards by the community I noticed that one of the awards I founded is listed first. Never felt older. LOL! While I consider you an "Editor of the week" in my book, one Wikipedia Award I can give is right on the nose for you, and I started that one as well. ;). So...I can say with full confidence that you are "An Excellent New Editor"! Great work, please keep it up and thank you for your collaboration! Makes me feel that giving this award to you has real merit!

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Workmen's Village, Amarna, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Barry Kemp (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Your revert of Howard Carter
Your revert has been reverted. 1. I would remind you that it is Wikipedia editing policy that the presumption of 'good faith' must be made. This was the case on my part, AND I would have assumed in yours, but for the fact, as your statement makes clear – (the slander of 'vandalism'), most certainly wasn't in yours. 2. The edit is an important edition to the article, as the affair alleged with Herbert was made in 2016 on pure supposition (refer to reports of the time), and has since metastasized to almost fact. 3. The only 'bad source' (and only in the minds of Wikipedia's leftists) is the Daily Mail for the Carnarvon quote. I tried to find an alternative source for this, but Lord Carnarvon wrote his response solely for the Mail, so there is no other source. As in other such rare instances (e.g. a certain famous speech of Cecil Rhodes, that only the Daily Mail covered), an allowance is therefore permissable as a direct quote for the purposes of pure record. - I figured you might be popping by my talk page soon : ) You know what my dude? My bad. Past performance is not always an indicator of future performance. Please consider linking directly to the news article sources in your citations in the future (templates make it easy), it makes it much easier for others to check your sources ^_^ Wishing you a chill weekend! Request for Assistance/Article Evaluation
Hi Merytat3n! I was wondering if there is any chance you could give me some feedback on my additions to the article "Amarna Tomb 3" (since you are interested in the area of Amarna), or let me know what I would need to add for the page to be reassessed and upgraded from stub class. Of course I understand if you are too busy! This is my first major project on Wikipedia and it is for an educational assignment so I would really appreciate any feedback.
Thank you very much! Porcelainmirror (talk) 04:46, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Porcelainmirror:! You did good work!! The sources are good, and the images are also good! I'm not massively experienced on Wikipedia myself (only been here since 2018) but I think you are off to a great start!! Thank you for your hard work :)
- The page has been assessed and upgraded to B class - it still had the stub tag at the bottom of the page because I changed it on the talk page but forgot to change it on the main page lol Merytat3n (talk) 10:02, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

Tutankhamun Page Image
Hello Merytat3n. I, SmoovOpr8r, changed the Tutankhamun page image from his golden mask to his mannequin. You reverted it claiming that the mask should be the page image because it is more famous. Your claim presupposes that the most famous image of a person should be their page image. However, this is not written anywhere as Wikipedia protocol. The mannequin is the most appropriate page image because it is the most individual-specific image of Tutankhamun. Virtually every pharaoh had a golden mask as a part of their sarcophagus. This is not unique to Tutankhamun. If anything it distorts the history that every pharaoh had one. Also, if you look at the other pharaoh wikipedia pages, their main images are of statues of them, which makes sense. Tutankhamun is the only page that does not follow this pattern. Therefore, a mannequin/statue of him is the most appropriate image. SmoovOpr8r (talk) 14:55, 26 July 2021 (UTC)
- @SmoovOpr8r: Yeah, nah
- The golden death mask is the most instantly recognisable item associated with Tutankhamun. It bears his portrait same as the mannequin although I don’t see the mannequin headlining at Tutankhamun exhibitions
- “every pharaoh had one” and “it’s not unique to him” Given his mask is one of only two royal death masks have survived into modern times I’d say its unique to him. The other belongs to Psusennes I and *checks page* it is the main image for him. By the same logic every pharaoh probably had a mannequin too!
- Bad reasoning. No other king’s burial survived intact (other than Psusennes I) so of course their main images are statues
- For future reference this kind of thing is better posted on the talk page for the article rather than the individual user’s page :) Merytat3n (talk) 20:47, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Tutankhamun and the Keita STR article
Hi Merytat3n,
I wanted to raise the issue of including the Keita (2022) STR analysis on Tutankhamun’s family in his main page. The article was originally removed because it said that the theme of the paper was viewed to be more relevant to the article on the AE race controversy rather than any genetic conclusions. However, upon further inspection and reviewing Keita’s commentary on the Amarna family, he discussed his findings in relation to their population affinity rather than any racial categories in the modern sense. Hence, can this article be re-included ? WikiUser4020 (talk) 07:59, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi there WikiUser4020,
- I'm going to copy this to the Tutankhamun talk page instead to get wider input because I am just one editor and this is about changes to an article.
- Keita does mention that the available DNA of the ancient Egyptian royals has "affinities with Sub-Saharan Africans" he then later goes on say that this broad category (and the other two options in his analysis) is still a racial category but going by a modern name.
- I have absolutely no interest in the specifics of the DNA studies done on Ancient Egyptians as it is, in my personal opinion, still trying to place them into one box or another and such isolated studies of narrow scope on damaged ancient DNA will never accurately reflect the population diversity present in Egypt. The point of the Gad et al paper was to demonstrate that the family tree proposed by Hawass et al (also demonstrating relatedness) was supported by the X and Y haplogroups, not the population histories or affinities of those haplogroups themselves. If I had my way, the article would not even mention the haplogroups, because it only invites more racial interpretations, POV-pushing, and false dichotomies. But luckily Wikipedia is the product of consensus (scholarship, users), hence my moving this to the article talk page :) Merytat3n (talk) 09:55, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for creating the new page for the collar — how about changing the name of the article on the tomb from an abbreviation? Seems that TT8 is going to be rather inadequate. _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 02:24, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
- @83d40m: The tomb is usually known as "TT8", which is its official designation, or as the "tomb of Kha". It was a mistake on my part to spell it out in full, which is never normally used, so I've now followed the tomb template properly which renders it as "Theban tomb TT8". "TT" is an abbreviation in the same vein as the "KV" or "QV" numbers which seem to be generally accepted on Wiki. If you think the name of the page should be changed, feel free to bring it up on the talk page or on the WikiProject page : ) Merytat3n (talk) 06:54, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Ancient Egypt updates on Ramesses X and Ramesses XI
Dear Madam,
I have been a member of wikipedia since maybe 2006 or 2008. Wikipedia's main strengths in my view is that it has an of [unpaid] volunteers but that is also its main weakness. I sure wouldn't want Mr. Musk to undermine wikipedia as he has been doing to twitter but wikipedia cannot always keep up with the latest information. I am a member of EEF and this information was posted recently on EEF about the reigns of Ramesses X and XI by Aayko Eyma (the moderator) on November 4, 2023 but no one has used the information here yet.

Secondly, Athena Van der Perre's 2014 PDF article on the Year 16 date of Akhenaten mentioning Nefertiti was available on her academia account for 2-3 years already but no one made a link to it on Nefertiti and Penthu's wikipedia article until I had some time. I only occasionally edit on wikipedia as I usually edit on my Wikicommons account and have to work in real life. Sadly, where I live in Metro Vancouver, Canada, everything is very expensive and I have to work today just to pay the rent for housing and we have a major housing and cost of living crisis in most of Canada. Rents are skyrocketing and winter is just around the corner here although its likely summer where you are, I assume in NZ and Australia. Anyway, please feel free to update Ramesses X's wikipedia article if you wish. The king cannot be Ramesses V as he died around I and II month of Peret. Its 2023 and still new discoveries are being made in Egyptology. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 01:56, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Leoboudv: Thanks for the article link! And thank you for adding the link to Van der Perre's paper, it is excellent to have easily accessible sources. On pages I work on I try to add as many as I can find. Sadly it is not unusual to have a delay in adding pdf links to sources as there are simply so few WPAncient Egypt editors so thanks for helping out! (I too work for a living and edit in stolen moments or in my spare time) I will see about updating Ramesses X : ) Merytat3n (talk) 21:00, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- No problem. We are all unpaid volunteers...and that is both the main strength and weakness of wikipedia. I heard that Australia and NZ also have very expensive real estate and its very hard to get ahead...just like in Canada today. Cheers for your kind reply from Metro Vancouver, Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:50, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Neferneferuaten
If you wish, I can Email you Nozomu Kawai's 2023 article on Neferneferuaten "Wonderful Things: Essay in Honor of Nicholas Reeves" if you have an Email address. Its a well reasoned paper but his arguments are basically similiar to his 2022 ARCE presentation. Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 12:47, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Leoboudv: Sure, that would be lovely! Thanks for the presentation link, I will check it out : ) Merytat3n (talk) 00:47, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Hathor of the vagina or womb or ...
What was your cursory look at sources? Can you explain? Temerarius (talk) 14:35, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- Merytat3n was the one who reverted your addition, but as the primary author of the current text of Hathor, I'll explain why I think her revert was justified. Wilkinson 2003 is the most-cited source in the article, so it's not as if it's a source that the article doesn't make use of. I don't doubt Wilkinson at all when he says one of Hathor's epithets could be translated as "mistress of the vagina", but I'm not sure which epithet he's referring to; he doesn't give the Egyptian form. But I doubt it's the same epithet as the one that Bleeker mentions, "mistress of love", so it shouldn't be listed next to it as if it's an alternate translation unless we're sure it's referring to the same Egyptian phrase.
- Moreover, it's possible Wilkinson is thinking of Nebethetepet, a goddess who often seems to be merely an aspect of Hathor. As the Hathor article already states, Nebethetepet's name can be translated as "lady of the offering", "lady of contentment", or "lady of the vulva". There's a lot of semantic ambiguity here. There are two Egyptian words that can appear in epithets like these; nbt is usually translated as "lady" and ḥnwt as "mistress". But Wilkinson's translation of Nebethetepet's name on p. 156 uses "mistress". "Vulva" and "vagina" may have been used interchangeably in Egyptian (as they often are in English). Meryat3n says that the latter part of Nebethetepet's name is sometimes translated as "uterus"; I don't know the source for that, but if so, it stands to reason that the Egyptians used the word for the entire female reproductive system. But, on the other hand, Wilkinson's entry on Nebethetepet doesn't mention the anatomical meaning of her name, only "mistress of the offering" or "mistress of contentment", so that may not have been what he was thinking of when he said Hathor could be called "mistress of the vagina".
- When rewriting the Hathor article, I decided to leave out Wilkinson's "mistress of the vagina", while being sure to mention the "vulva" translation of Nebethetepet's name. That way, I avoided being redundant (if they are different translations of the same phrase) and used the phrase that can be traced to a known Egyptian term, letting that one stand for Hathor's connection with female anatomy. - God, whatever you can tell me will be great! What sources are good for Egyptian fertility vocabulary? There's an unsourced source I have where someone says "bull" is a common equivalent or euphemism for "penis" in Egypt; is that so? I actually find Wilkinson a bit careless, but the careless ones are the only ones who take any stances these days. The topic of fertility vocabulary doesn't make them any less touchy either. Temerarius (talk) 23:11, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not an expert on Egyptian vocabulary. I do have access to some Egyptological dictionaries, but I don't actually know the language, so to derive anything useful from them I need to be looking for a specific Egyptian word. I just happen to have thought a lot about how to deal with these particular epithets when writing the article. There wasn't any particular source I used for the terminology; I just worked it out from the handful of epithets mentioned in studies of Hathor.
- Re: the usage of "bull", I don't know. It was used in divine epithets, apparently meaning something like "one who copulates with", e.g., Kamutef ("bull of his mother"). In those contexts it may well have been a euphemism for "penis", but I kind of assumed it didn't refer to an organ so much as a person—kind of like the English slang term "stud". A. Parrot (talk) 03:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Temerarius : ) Thanks for that A. Parrot, good to know we had the same reasoning. Merytat3n (talk) 22:07, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Nifty
You seem extremely cool! I saw your remarkably thorough edit and improvement of the article about the tomb of Kha and Merit, and had to check out your user page. Magnificent! You do great work, and please say hi to your kitty for me. Fluorescent Jellyfish (talk) 09:18, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Bad Dürrenberg burial references
Hi, thanks for creating this page (it needed one!). I'm trying to add a few more references and more information (such as from news websites), and as I just posted on the Talk page, I can't for the life of me figure out how the reference template works. Could we switch this to the standard format, which allows use of the automatic reference generator? Since it's a stub article, with very few multiple references to single sources, I think the standard system would be fine, and would make it much easier to add info. Let me know what you think. Thanks! Ninafundisha (talk) 13:07, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there Ninafundisha! I replied on the talk page but I will reply here too. Yeah, the page uses the sfn style at the moment simply through personal preference. I'm not really bothered if it changes though! I also have info I want to add but it is waiting in my sandbox for motivation : ) Feel free to go ahead! Merytat3n (talk) 04:11, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

Tomb of Kha and Merit
Dear Merytat3n, first of al I apologize for the long delay in reviewing our article before your FAC. I now hav had time to read it and I see that it is very clearly of very high standard. I am confident this will be a FAC. There is litle to point out to improve. The coverage of the topic is thorough; the layout is good; style of references is perfect and their content too (a cursory look at JSTOR and common book sourcs confirms this). A few nitpicks:
Regarding alt text, is it always present except for one instance which you have forgotten (it is for File:Sarcofago interno di Merit mpi304930.tif wih caption "Merit's masked and partially shrouded mummy lying in her coffin trough") also to be on the safe side for the alts where you say "see caption" and "refer to caption" I suggest you really write an alt or copy the caption (this is ok for me but sometimes weird things get raised at FAC).
I noticed that none of the caption have references, I think this is ok for most but I would feel more secure if you could find a ref confirming the TT8 Plan picture because it was uploaded as "own work" by a wikicommons user. If you know a book/article displaying a similar plan you could had its reference there. Iry-Hor (talk) 08:04, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- Dear Iry-Hor, thank you so much for looking over the article! No need to apologise for the delay, we all have real life to contend with. Thank you for your kind words about the article : )
- Thank you for finding the alt I forgot and for your advice. I have done as you suggested and replaced any instances of "see caption" or similar with alt text.
- I have added a ref for the chapel plan. It seems to be based on the plan given in Porter and Moss (1960). Merytat3n (talk) 03:19, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- Put it up at FAC whenever you feel ready and expect to have wiki time available and it should go very well. FAC is always a very long process and you will certainly have to do tweaks following suggestions. Expect:
- i) to see a long time elapse between putting the article up and the end of the FAC process when your article is (hopefully) promoted (this can easily take 2/3 months);
- ii) to have to respond to lots of little thing notably about phrasing or technical points (overall try to implement as many changes as possible, if you feel like something proposed is not acceptable, explain why to the reviewer);
- iv) try to answer reviews relatively quickly (hence put at FAC when you expect to have wiki time);
- iii) possibly not seeing enough reviews (if so then we can agitate people in the Ancient Egypt Wikiproject to have enough reviewers). I will also drop by to add a support, I am going on vacations but will post a support at some point in August if I see the article in FAC.
Keep in mind that before promotion your article will also receive: an image review checking that all employed pictures have the required copyrights (you may have to edit some wikicommons data to update incorrect copyrights, or in the wose case scenario, removing a picture or pick an alternative one) and a source review and spotcheck (randomly selected references will be reviewed for their formatting, quality and accuracy with respect to the text). Oh and by the way, I think you really did an outstanding job on this! Iry-Hor (talk) 17:21, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the very helpful rundown of what to expect! I will probably put in through in the next week or so. I feel I have just been moving words around on the page without making any real improvements for a while so there is no real reason to delay it ^_^; I expect to have a bit of downtime in early August (small vacation) but I will have internet access and I will bring the physical sources with me. Thank you again for your generous assistance! Merytat3n (talk) 21:27, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
