Re: Portal:U2
I need more DYKs for Portal:U2/Did you know (about 35–40). I've taken and collected enough quotes for Portal:U2/Quotes, but they needs to be sorted by periods or authors, and to remove duplicates. All quotes are from U2's related articles on WikipediA and WikiQuote. Please, do not change the first five entries on both pages, they are still appearing on the portal main page. It is safe to work in all parts just below {{undercontruction}}, of course. Portal:U2/Selected article, picture, and bio run fine, and could be expanded. –pjoef (talk • contribs) 15:38, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Hey! pjoef. How many DYKs has the WP had and where can we find them? Would it work if I look for something in U2 by U2? Miss Bono [zootalk] 15:43, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Tryin' to reach the sea
Hello L.! I'm going to reach the sea, finally! I hope I'll spend more time swimming and sunbathing and relaxing, than being connected to the internet. I'll be back (and ready to go) in 1–3 weeks (at leat in September, depending on work and money). I hope to see you here again, and in good health (I read your chilling message on top of this page). Wishing you a speedy recovery and all the very best for the future! –pjoef (talk • contribs) 15:13, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for August 10
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited U2, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Dick Evans (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Screenshot of Wikipedia
I saw the screenshot you linked at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions#Looking for Users. That is certainly not how Wikipedia is supposed to look. Wikipedia:Skin#Screenshots shows what others see with File:English Wikipedia screenshot.png being the default Vector skin. The screenshot is for a logged out user but the only change when logging in is a line of links at the top. What is your browser? Does it look similar when you log out? PrimeHunter (talk) 00:26, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hi PrimeHunter. I know how Wikipedia looks like because when I was at school I had a full view of it. But now I cannot. Cullen already explained it some things on your talk. Miss Bono [zootalk] 13:26, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- OK. If you clear your entire cache then you might get the intended look, but if you have a poor Internet connection then clearing your cache may delete files your browser will have problems retrieving again when you view the same pages later. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- PrimeHunter, nothing will happen if I clean my cache. I already tried. So I already got used to see Wikipedia this way. Thanks for the help, anyways :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 13:36, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

I've made edits to U2 pages: [1], [2], [3]. I wasn't aware that a quota could be enforced in order to stay a part of a WikiProject. --Teancum (talk) 00:38, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hi! According to the WP:COUNCIL guide there seems to be something vague about if you have not made an edit to Wikipedia itself (not just the Project) in a year then you can be downgraded to an inactive member. It seems that this is so on the other projects I am a member of. Can you perhaps find out? Or if you are going to have other requirements, please post them on the U2 Project page. Lunch
Hi, Miss Bono,
I don't know if you are still around, but I am done with my customer for the day, and having lunch with my son at a Puerto Rican restaurant. To me, it is similar to Cuban food. They are rare in California, though Mexican restaurants are everywhere. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:59, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hey @Cullen328: I wasn't around. That's great, I've never eaten PR food. But if it's similar to Cuban it is delicious :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 11:51, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Linking usernames when you address them: Please stop
Hi, Miss Bono (notice I didn't say Hi, Miss Bono)
I see you are still linking editors' names when you address them. I asked you nicely to stop doing this at User talk:Miss Bono/Archive 5#Linking other users' usernames, and you promised to stop. But you've gone right on doing it.
Not only is this practice completely unnecessary and a waste of your time, it is also bordering on offensive, because it sort of suggests the person you're talking to needs to click a link to discover what their own userpage contains!!
I can't make you stop doing this in general, but I now insist would be very pleased if you could stop doing it at least to me. Thank you. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:12, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- We seem to be at cross purposes, Miss Bono. Maybe it's a language thing. I don't speak Spanish so you'll have to bear with me.
- I don't really know what you're talking about when you refer to pinging. I suspect you mean some automated thing whereby the other party gets some sort of notification that you've had something new to say in an article talk page or the reference desk. If so, then you're reinventing the wheel. That's exactly what our Watchlists are for. Regulars at the Refdesks will be checking them out (at least) daily, regardless. Does simply linking their name actually achieve anything? For me, all it achieves is clogging up the visual appearance of a thread by making it seem there are many more transactions than there actually are. And that's counter-productive.
- When you post a reply or a question to another user involved in the same thread, and you want to be courteous by addressing them by name, just type their name. That's it, just like I did at the start of this reply. Do not link it, not at all. You're the only user I've ever come across who does this. There is the Talkback feature if you really think it's unlikely they will not see your post without some flag waving. For people who hang around WP a lot, even this is generally unnecessary. Just trust. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:53, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Jack-- I don't really understand why the new notifications system wouldn't apply to you, but please read Wikipedia:Notifications as it appears you are not familiar with it-- many editors are now using it to contact others and it is definitely more immediate that waiting for someone to get to their watchlist. I, JethroBT drop me a line 01:05, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, Jethro. I am quite familiar with it, as I get numerous notifications every day. But surely it cannot depend on having to link a user's user name every time you say something to them in some forum. I see nobody but Miss Bono doing this. Nobody. For example, in your post, you addressed me simply as Jack, not as Jack, and I replied in kind. What am I missing here? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 01:14, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- I agree it's redundant to use if you're addressing them on their own userpage (you get a notification for that already, as I'm sure you know), but elsewhere, I think it's perfectly reasonable for anyone to use to notify someone. Of course, it's no problem if you want to request otherwise. I, JethroBT drop me a line 02:12, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

- If you don't want to be notified when someone links your name, just turn off that feature. Special:Preferences --> Notifications and then uncheck "Mention". – Philosopher Let us reason together. 04:29, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- Somebody is missing the point here, Philosopher *. This has nothing to do with being notified or not being notified. When I'm involved in some thread, the only time I ever want to see my username linked is when I sign my own posts. It just looks completely bizarre for others in the same thread to be linking my username whenever they mention my name. I don't need to be notified about every new post in a thread in which I am clearly involved and will obviously be watching. (* This was done to make a point). -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 05:41, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- Given the discussion about notifications above (and, indeed, the last non-parenthetical sentence of your reply to me just now - "don't need to be notified"), I assumed it was the extra notifications that were bothering you. If you just don't like seeing your name linked, well, I suppose that is different, though username linking is a fairly accepted (and occasionally useful) practice, afaik. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 01:22, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- It must be a stylistic thing. I am constantly linking people's name if I'm addressing a comment that they made on a Talk Page so they will get an alert. It never occurred to me that it would bother anyone (I mean you can check your notifications and poof! the number goes back to 0) but I didn't link to Jack here because he has said it annoys him. But I won't stop doing it unless I'm told that the other Editor prefers not to be linked. So far, it hasn't ever happened. Liz Read! Talk! 21:57, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
- JackofOz — I JethroBT — Philosopher — Liz — Miss Bono:, I always ping most people involved in a discussion, even on their own talk page. First of all, it is not redundant because the notifications system is smart enough not to give a mention notification if it is giving a talk page notification. Since I do it out of habit on other forums such as AfD, AN, THQ, VPT, etc, the would be no reasonable expectation for me not to do it on a talk page, even if it is the user's own talk page. If you are getting too many notifications, feel free to shut some of them off or submit a bug report on bugzilla: to get more options. Feel free to ping me here if you have any other questions about how the notification system works, and I would be happy to elaborate. As far as your request for Miss Bono to link your username on your talk page goes, I personally feel that is a bogus and insulting request. The request itself seems to assume bad faith on Miss Bono's part that you think she is purposely trying to annoy you. Please read up on WP:AGF because in my dealings with Miss Bono, I can fairly confidently say she is a good faith editor and she's not just trying to annoy you. There is no lack of her ability to understand your request, it's just not something she remembers when posting to you on your talk page. I suppose you could always add a note to your talk page's editnotice requesting users not link your name there, but even then it is a matter of the poster's preference and if they can see and remember that request. Happy editing! Technical 13 (talk) 22:41, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
- Technical 13 — I JethroBT — Philosopher — Cullen328 — Liz — Miss Bono:
- (after a short wikibreak) Well, no insult was ever intended, at least not from me. It's very clear that the agreement Miss Bono and I came to, some time ago, was one of those cases where what she thought she was agreeing to and what I thought I was agreeing to were different things, but we thought we were agreeing to the same thing. As it turned out, it was an agreement in name only, but we couldn't have known that until we had the above discussion and discovered just what it was each of us was talking about. I thought this was all clear now. Miss Bono and I have never had any issues between us, and our good relations continue.
- But I should provide some feedback. As I said above, the jargon term "ping" was totally lost on me. Call me slow if you like, but I had never heard it until Miss Bono mentioned it to me. I now discover it's widely used, and it has special relevance to the WP:Notifications system. User:Cullen328 latterly advised me on my talk page that "there is even a template {{ping}} for this purpose". However, you will read the Notifications page and discover precisely zero (0) references to "pinging". My query is, how would a user ever get to know about that term and that template if nobody has ever told him, and if it is not even deemed worthy of a mention in the page where - of all places - its use should be described? That gap needs filling, if ever a gap needed filling.
- If you search for ping, you get a disambig page, which inter alia contains Ping (blogging), which seems to be the closest thing WP has about this expression. Not that an encyclopedia is a blog, but whatever.
- So, we have two camps: those in the know, who all (externally to WP, apparently) feed each other's knowledge about new jargon and stuff; and the others, who have to just get up to speed any way they can, and in the meantime it somehow becomes their fault for being uninformed. I don't like that development, not one little bit. Any new system must come with more than adequate documentation and user-friendly descriptions, otherwise it's a recipe for World War III. I'll be notifying the people at WP:Notifications about this thread.
- I'm reminded of the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. I've always had a special fondness for the Testudinidae among us. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:25, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
Categories
- Hi Miss Bono. If you are using {{userbox}} as the base template, you can add to it:
| usercategory = name of category (without "category:")
- You can add others using:
| usercategory2 =
- and
| usercategory3 =
- If you have made the templates from scratch—basically a table of your own divising, you can just add to the template's code (I suggest at the bottom)

Retirement
Hi. I think it would be a great pity if you were really to retire.I've enjoyed following your edits on the pages you have access to and in that aspect you've made a far greater contribution to this encyclopedia than you imagine. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:03, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind words Kudpung กุดผึ้ง. But the majority of my edits are in talk pages and that's not what Wikipedia is about. I don't want to break any rules and my contributions are just an extremely low part of the encyclopedia and very poor because of my lack of Internet access. Thank you so much. I didn't know you'd follow my edits :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 13:09, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- I'm very actively engaged on Editor Retention, and hate to see us lose good people simply because their Internet access is limited. I don't know exactly just how limited your access is, but I feel you have a lot to contribute to the many areas that are not mainspace. It's obvious you are not here merely for socialising. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:23, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Which are those areas, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง? See this this article, I think that will answer your question. I really care about Wikipedia and I hate leaving, and that will affect my personal life as well. Miss Bono [zootalk] 13:29, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- The areas where we review articles, discuss policies, and the behaviour of other editors, for example. I'm sure your opinions would be most valued. If you would like some more focused ideas, don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page - you are most welcome there. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:29, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for you kindness, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง. I think I need to start over with this. I'd like to know where can I find those places where you review articles, discuss policies, and the behaviour of other editors and other matters. Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:34, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- If your Internet is slow, probably the places to start are those where there is a lot of reading, so as soon as the pages have loaded you can go offline and continue reading them. (This reminds me a bit of the old days in Europe when connection was a costly long distance dial up over a V90 modem). So you could start by familiarising yourself with policies such as WP:Deletion, WP:COI, WP:Sock, WP:Username, WP:Notability, WP:Reliable sources, WP:Verifiability, etc. When you've done all that, you'd be ready to take part in WP:AfD, WP:NPP,WP:AIV, WP:ANI, depending how quickly you can get the pages to load. You'll also come across some familiar faces, and you'll learn who to make friends with and who to avoid! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:49, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! The good thing is that I have a super fast conection, the bad thing is that the only place I can access is Wikipedia. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 15:44, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Miss Bono, as I've responded to you on my talk page, and I'm sure everyone here (Kudpung—Cullen328—I, JethroBT—Liz—TheOriginalSoni—Coal town guy) would agree, your talk pages edits are a process of collaborations to improve articles that your are passionate about to levels of greatness and are not simply an attempt to socialize and make friends. I truly hope you reconsider and help us make some more GAs and FAs... Technical 13 (talk) 01:32, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

My talk page
Good morning, Laura,
Please feel free to ask me questions about editing Wikipedia at any time. Please also feel free to ask about English language idioms, or places in California, or anything that strikes your fancy. You can even ask me what "strikes your fancy" means, whether or not you already know what it means. Though my recent problems are not all solved yet, I am making progress and am always happy to hear from you.
I got an inquiry from another editor on my talk page. Though he didn't mention you by name, I am 99.99% sure he was talking about you. So, if you read the response I wrote on my talk page, you will be 99.99% sure of how I feel about you. Is that good enough, for today at least? I hope so. Project Research
Hello Miss Bono, I wanted to follow up regarding research. I am more than happy to help you with research for your articles. However, as I have mentioned in previous communication, I like to be thorough in the research that I do. For my own articles that I have worked on, which are not that many, I take the time to get my information together slowly, too. Face it, very few articles are "rush" projects. Patience is a virtue well worth cultivating to achieve articles of high quality and that means a lot to me. I look forward to hearing from you. ChesPal (talk) 18:40, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi Laura, I am responding to the message you left me earlier. I am fine. Keeping busy with office work, but also able to spend some time on Wikipedia. As editing progresses on the U2 by U2 article, I am sure you will see some differences. Tonight we are busy so I doubt much time will be spent on the Internet. Take care, ChesPal (talk) 23:20, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

The previous thread
Hello Laura,
I suspect that the previous thread might be upsetting to you. Please try to let it pass. The answer you got from this editor at the Reference Desk on August 19 was worthless not in response to your original question, but an attempt to clarify a comment by another editor. And now, they have come to your talk page to object to you using notifications the way that feature was designed. I recommend that you disregard this negative interaction, and move on to productive work. ChesPal is working on a rewrite of the draft of U2 by U2. I will help with that as well, and maybe it will be ready for main space soon. Take care. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:47, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
- I have something to say about the above, on my talk page. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 09:45, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

English lesson
You asked: Also, I was wondering the difference between truck and lorry? Is it the same as favour and favor??
Well, in a sense, in that both examples involve variations between the British and American forms of the English language. Americans call a heavy cargo vehicle a "truck", while the British say "lorry". Most educated Americans know what "lorry" means but would never use it in everyday speech in the U.S. unless they were trying to imitate someone British to be funny. See List of American words not widely used in the United Kingdom and List of British words not widely used in the United States.
"Favour" and "favor" are the same word, used and pronounced pretty much the same way, but the first is British spelling and the second is American. "Colour" and "color" are the same. See American and British English spelling differences. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:58, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

- Favor and favour are the same word with different spellings. They are pronounced the same. Favour was the original English spelling. At the time of the American Revolution, there was a shortage of the letter u in the States, threatening to make it difficult to publish the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. One of Mad King George's first edicts upon hearing of our rebellion was to forbid any exportation of the letter u to the former colonies. Several Spanish galleons attempting to break the embargo were s'nk. The new nation was almost forced to call itself the Nited States of America. Benjamin Franklin, the postmaster general, and the man who invented lightning, realized that words like honor and favor had originally been written in Latin without the u, and that if America reverted to the original spelling it could re-use the u's to a better purpose, supporting the revolution. After the War of 1812 broke out in 1812, Noah Webster instituted his spelling reform, replacing the letter u with an apostrophe where possible. This was intended to s'pport an American flotilla to travel 'p the H'dson river and invade Q'ebec. 'Nfort'nately the American u's were entirely lost at sea as the American fleet travelled from Boston to New York harbo'r. But the spellings like "harbor" have been retained ever since to demonstrate American patriotism and our 'ndying hatred for the British. μηδείς (talk) 20:06, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Bono's introduction to the Book of Psalms
User:Cullen328/sandbox/Bono Psalms
Line 'em up!
This phrase does not have any specific meaning or strong symbolism to me. My first reaction is that this is what someone might say to a bartender right after walking into a bar with the intention of getting drunk. In other words, "Don't bother pouring me just one drink. Pour several drinks and put them in a row, because I am planning to drink fast".
There are very different songs by that name by James Taylor, Kebo Gotti and Freeway (rapper). There is also a golf training game by that name, used to teach how to putt. Sometime the phrase will be used in war movies to refer to a soldier lining up the rifle sights with an enemy soldier in combat, so in that context, it means, "shoot accurately, not wildly".
Context matters very much with this kind of vague phrase. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:24, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- My aunt sent me a few videos she downloaded form youtube and there was one called 60 minutes. Ed Bradley (I think it was him) asked Bono if U2 still want to be the best band in the world and he [Bono] said: Still want? [huge roar of laughter] line them up, line them up!
- That's the context. Any idea of what he wanted to say? Miss Bono [zootalk] 12:11, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- He was saying that they still wanted to be the best and would prove that by being better than any rival band anyone might think of. There is an English phrase, "battle of the bands" as an organized competition. He was speaking metaphorically. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:04, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Your link
Good morning, Miss Bono. I hope today is better for you. I visited a museum and started a new article Wolf House, which is kind of a sad story. Let me know what you think. Photos to come.
The link you sent is the transcript of a lengthy interview of all the U2 members in 2002, which was a Radio One and BBC project. I will email it to you this evening.Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:57, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- Oh thanks. I will read the article right now. I finished my last new article on Friday Irela Bravo. It still needs work but it's a start. What do you think. By the way, I love museums. Miss Bono [zootalk] 18:01, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
- Sad sad story but great idea for an article, I added a picture to the article, if you don't mind. Miss Bono [zootalk] 18:09, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Emails
Hello Miss Bono. I got two emails from you yesterday. The first mentioned your weekend and the U2 link. The second mentioned White Fang and In Cold Blood.
The email I sent to you with the transcript didn't go through. I got an error message from your server within the last hour. Shall I try again this evening? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:34, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- YOu should try tomorow. The as**ole admin of the server (who gets drunk almost everyday) disconnected the server yesterday because of the storm, and my friends said that he didn't get to work today... so... maybe tomorrow, I sent two email to ChesPal and two emails to you... I'm afraid you didn't receive them. However, you can try to send an email later to see if the problem it's already fixed. I got an sms from my aunt who lives in FL telling me that the four emails she sent me yesterday afternoon bounced back :( Miss Bono [zootalk] 19:39, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
- I slept in today because I have a tough job that starts later than usual. I did get a couple of emails. My concern about EDUN is your email reliability. People will be expecting prompt responses. Your thoughts? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:48, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
- I got your message this morning. Thank you!! :-) In my email from today I put a note over a copy of the email I sent yesterday. Please let me know if you received it. I also gave you information on another way to get through to me. Busy here both with work and Wikipedia. ChesPal (talk) 00:24, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Monday morning
Hello Miss Bono,
I tried to send you an email with flower photos but it got returned. Is there a maximum file size you can receive?
We went to a wedding this weekend for one of my nephews who is a rock drummer. So that was fun - plenty of live music. And pretty much all of my California relatives were there, including some I see infrequently. A very nice experience.
I hope you had a good weekend. Sorry a spammer messed with your pages. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 14:59, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, no problem! There is no maximum file size. I guess the admin turned the servers off because we are having rainy and stormy days, so he turns it off just in case :D, try later.
- Your nephew rocks! I haven't gone to many weddings just a few (maybe three or two). I bet it was awesome (your nephew's wedding :D)...
- I had a messy weekend. On Saturday I went with my boyfriend to buy a new keyboard for his PC and a we returned home all wet because of the rain, today I woke up with a high temperature and sore throat... on Sunday I had to work very much, (cleaning, cooking, washing clothes...) and at the very end of the day (11 pm) I sat down in front of my laptop and finished one of the chapters of my novel while listening to So Cruel. It is a very, very touchy song... that has something to do with that chapter.
- As for the spammer, I had a very confusing morning but now I am ok. Creating new userboxes and trying to answer the questions for the interview WP:U2 has on 2nd October.
P.S. The title of this section reminded me the first line of a cool song by U2 ("Out of Control"). Miss Bono [zootalk] 15:10, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Jumping through hoops
I should be more careful about using idioms when I am responding to you. I apologise. The phrase refers to problems, barriers or even just paper work that is between you and your goal; they are the "hoops" you have to "jump through" to get where you want to go. The phrase suggests that these barriers are mostly silliness, thrown in your path just to be obstructive. In general, the Catholic church has more rules about who can and cannot be married in their churches than does the Anglican church, and the other protestant denominations fewer still. It will all vary greatly by country and even by parish where some aspects are sometimes left to the discretion of the priest/minister. Bielle (talk) 23:50, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
Email Update
Thank you for your note. I have a feeling that the problem with emails that it is the size of the photos I am sending. I received a message that the files I sent, two photos, exceeded what is allowed on your server. I will try compressing photos in the computer and re-sending.
