Hi Nicholas, thanks for correcting the map. I am yet to get around to the correct procedure with maps -- Lost 08:06, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichalp! Could you make a map similar to which you made for Kanpur also for Lucknow? Would be really helpful for the article. IrfanAli 15:42, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nicholas, I made a small tweak. Could you check Amritsar now? Since the dot is big, at borders, you might see some overlap. Your thoughts? Deeptrivia had a similar observation and you can see the discussion here. - Ganeshk (talk) 18:56, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the guy whose rant you moved to Talk:Rajput ([1], [2]) is obviously the banned Rajput Vandal. See earlier incarnation here: [3]. [edit]

Thanks for making the change. It's not perfect anonymity, but I do feel I can edit a bit more boldly now that it's not quite so easy for non-Wikipedia colleagues to stumble across some of my edits.

Also, I know these sorts of administrative things can probably get dull and repetitive after a while, so thanks for taking this on, not just for me, but for others.

You are a buffoon

[edit]

Arb com asked me to not edit 5 rajput pages. Go read there trash again. They did not perm ban me for editing wikipedia. You have made it clear that whatever is inconvenient for your buddies you will delete it behind the veil of procedure. Heritage of India and who defended it can be blatanty trashed but how could you care. I am saddened to say this because I expect more patritoism from Indians.

You should have read the comments about Impumozhi and then taken a stand but perhaps that is much too ask because you have already developed a prejudice. Instead you are trying to bully me. Buddy it ain't gonna work.

Thank you for my new name! You are banned for a year. See: Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Rajput#DPSingh banned. PS I don't deal with rude people, so lighten up and have a nice day! =Nichalp «Talk»= 08:58, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, thus backfires a little scheme of the Troll. DPS and SS are confirmedly one and the same. The Troll was trying to project as though DPS (not SS) is doing the dirty work, in order to try and keep SS's name clean (high hopes), I think because SS is the troll's real-life name. How well you get to know people on Wikipedia! Cheer up Nikky, these epithets are accolades, and good ones; they are as testamentary as, and more interesting than any of the run-of-the-mill barnstars, of which you have a ridiculous excess. You should be glad for the variety! ImpuMozhi 13:25, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Yes, I am still on a a break. My new semester (semester 5) has begun, and I am supposed to give a 20 minute seminar at the end of this week. Am busy with that and the college work. Studies at college are becoming tougher due to the appearance of many core computer science subjects this year. The next few months are going to be busy for me as I am also planning to start preparations for entrance exams like GRE/CAT/GATE etc. I hope to spend some time at wikipedia. I won't be leaving it and will start editing again by the end of this week. - Aksi_great (talk) 11:55, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

username issue

[edit]

Hi Nicholas - I have a problem with the username of this user: ARYAN818 (talk · contribs). Just "Aryan" would obviously be ok, but the "8," especially "888" is a sign/salute of neo-Nazis. As the person is Indian, it is more likely that he is a Hindutva advocate. "818" might just be a modification or an attempt to elude this correlation.

I request you to please check this out. Obviously its ok if the person really doesn't reflect this and doesn't know of this correlation with neo-Nazis, but I think the explicit use of this is inappropriate as it openly advocates user identity as a Nazi/that sorta thing, instead of simply a userbox or something. The problem is real becoz the fellow's edits border on trolling. Rama's Arrow 14:56, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No I think his explanation is satisfactory to me. I just wanted to make sure someone like you knows about this. Rama's Arrow 19:50, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is that a commercial listing?

[edit]

Hi,

Thats an awesome presentation, I felt proud to be an Indian reading that. It gives lots of information about India that is not found in the wikipedia article (did you check it out?)

I wonder why you find it a commercial listing? If your taking about some ads then even the BBC site has them as do all the others, they were minimal anyway.

Anyway Im a newbie here and I guess you know better..

Thanks for replying. Imho, thats the portal, Its an article on the portal that allows comments and it does talk about the history, geography etc. of India. The site does have a sepearate forum whose topics are listed on the right, but the article I linked to is not on the forum itself. Check it out .. http://www.funonthenet.in/content/view/189/31/

I had found this website via an external link in the 2006 anti-reservation protests - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Indian_anti-reservation_protests (The first hand experience one). I just felt that as many people as possible should see the presentation as it has information many people dont know about. Anyhow Im not going to push it any further, you have made a great amount of contribution to the India article so you know best. Have a nice day :)

Yes I did address the reasonable criticism he gave, but not the charge of "poor writing." I know we must assume WP:AGF, but obviously this person has many problems, and he uses the "Diablo Test" and previous opposers as an excuse to try and sabotage FACs and RFAs. Last month there was considerable momentum to write him up for RfC but it didn't materialize. What can we do to counter his obvious bad faith contributions? This Fire Burns.....Always 07:23, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But surely we have to do "something" about it - I mean here's a guy who routinely breaks WP:AGF and WP:POINT but protects himself well enough not to get slammed. [edit]

Thanks Nichalp for the barnstar. Nice surprise for me after getting back :)

There is also an issue with the depiction of disputed areas on the map. Apparently depicting Arunachal Pradesh and areas of Chinese claim in Himachal, Uttaranchal and J&K would be Chinese pint of view and not neutral, as except China, the rest of the world recognises it to be a part of India. The only areas that need to be shown as disputed would be PoK and Aksai China. A google image search for 'Asia' highlights this point. Sorry to see the kind of stuff that you have to cope with, Nick. But being abused by editors with diametrically opposite agendas in the Rajput and Shivsena article probably means that you have been fair and neutral. Tintin (talk) 06:30, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Really, Tintin, I know of only one "side" of the Rajput page that has spewed abuse on Nicholas. If people regard this as being the equal-and-opposite of those other comments on the India notice-board and elsewhere, then perhaps I am unsuited to WP society at some deep, basic-instinct level. Not that being abused by only one side points to Nicky being biased ;) ImpuMozhi 23:39, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What I meant was that in Shivsena article he was accused for being pro-Shivsena while in the Rajput article he was accused of being anti-Rajput (or something like that), so the accusers can be said to have more or less opposite POVs. Tintin (talk) 05:22, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Castes and Tribes of the Punjab

[edit]

Dear Sir, I am asking your opinion on this festering dispute that has developed between myself and Satbir Singh since the past few days.

The facts of the matter are like this:

I created a template called Castes and Tribes of the Punjab with a view to studying the caste and tribal groups that exist in what was the ancient Punjab region (Punjab (Pakistan), Punjab (India), Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). My intention, unlike any Ibbetsons, Todds or Cunninghams was to study these groups from a purely anthropological perspective sans any controversy so that people visiting this portal would get to know about the huge mosaic that my province (I am a Punjabi) is.

I started with a few groups. But soon enough the groups began to increase. For the sake of brevity, I grouped them under Categories. As the template evolved, I learnt not to name any category speculatively.

The final categories were:

Brahmin groups. Dalit groups. Jat clans. Khatris and other groups. Rajput clans. Shaikhs and other groups. Tarkhans and other groups. Others (groups to which i could not attribute any specific status). In the last (Others), I also included groups such as Kamboj, Khasa, Ahir and Gujjar. However, Satbir Singh separated them and bunched them under a new category called "Surviving Ancient Kshatriya Tribes".

Since that day, a revert war has been on between the two of us. According to Satbir, these groups such as the Ahirs (the ancient Abhiras), the Gujjars (Gurjaras), the Khas (the Khasas), the Kamboj (Kambojas) and Yadav (Yadavas) are ancient Kshatriya tribes mentioned in a number of ancient Sanskrit texts.

My own personal opinion is that all this is true. However, some points must be noted:

The Varna System is a topic subject to a lot of controversy and dispute. I have been noticing this in recent weeks. Pages such as Khatri, Rajput, Kayastha and Bhumihar have been vandalised because many people don't agree with the Varna status of these groups. If the Ahirs, the Gujjars, the Khasaa, the Kambojas and the Yadavas are Kshatriya groups, then so are the Rajputs, Jats, Khatris, Tarkhans et al. I did not create a category entitled "Kshatriya groups" in the first place because I knew I was treading on soft ground. All the above mentioned castes claim Kshatriya status. But we all know, how disputable these claims are. The rigmarole that is the Varna System is known to us all. For example, the Jats, who in the Vedic and Mythological periods were workers should be placed in the Shudra Category under the Varna System. But many Jats clans consider themselves the equal and perhaps the superior of Rajputs as adhrents of Kshatriya Dharma. My own caste, the Khatris and related groups such as Aroras claim Kshatriya status. But we have seen on the Khatri page as to what became of that claim. Ahirs, Gujjars and Yadavs are considered to be OBCs in most Indian states inspite of their being the descendants of ancient Abhiras, Gurjaras and Yadus. There is a controversy raging on the Yadav page presently if I am not wrong, on the status of the caste. Taking all these points into consideration and being aware of the fact that there are users (say Sanjay Mohan and Holywarrior, who have caused great disputes on various caste pages, I proposed categories such as "Kambojs and related groups" (Kamboj, Kamboja, Kamboh and Khasa) and "Gujjars and realted groups" (Ahirs, Gujjars, Dhangars and Bakarwals). But Satbir Singh and another user named Sze cavalry01 objected to it. They returned to "Ancient Kshatriya Tribes". I did a little compromise by making it "Ancient Warrior Tribes", which I later realised would also be POV. Therefore, I changed it to just "Ancient Tribes" - A completely unspeculative term.

However, Satbir Singh does not agree. He calls it a "gross suppression of known historical facts", "a crime against history" and "a political agenda" and has termed me a "Vandal". I have put forward my points. But both of us are yet to agree.

I have fighting a revert war with him for almost a week now. Have a look at the template's history page and Satbir Singh's talk page to get a complete idea of the whole fracas.

This fight has become downright silly. I surely don't expect myself to spend my time, money and energy on such a silly matter. And I am sure neither does the other party.

Therefore, I urge you to have a look at the whole matter. Whatever is your opinion would be agreeable to me.

I have, as of now, protected the page to prevent this major revert war. Please discuss changes and reach consensus on the template's talk page.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| ŗ 3 $ |-| ţ |-|) 04:45, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure where the category is. :( =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:14, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(Putting my nose in)...The categories in question are the sections of the template, they are not separate categories. Anyways, welcome back. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:21, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was making the POTD entry for your map of India and I'm having a really difficult time writing a blurb for this. Normally, I try to write a short paragraph about the subject of the image, but sometimes I have to focus on the image itself, which seems to be the correct approach for this. As you are the image creator, I would appreciate some help. Please look at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/August 2006 and Wikipedia:Picture of the day/July 2006 for more examples. Thanks so much. howcheng {chat} 07:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for butting in, but wouldnt it be more appropriate to have this image as POTD on August 15th, Indian independence day - Lost 07:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Moved to August 15, and I figured out a blurb for it after all. howcheng {chat} 16:54, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Broad guage to Bhavnagar

[edit]

Hi! Great work on many frontiers! Just a small update: You have on the Commons a map of the Railway network where there is no broad guage rail to Bhavnagar. In reality, it's broad guage since a couple of years. Keep going! Mathias Luther, Finland

We're working on a new SVG railway map, I don't know how long it will take, but you can check out wikipedia:WikiProject India Maps for updates. We'll be including it in the new map. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:12, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Abhas Mitra

[edit]

Hi Nichalp, your Abhas Mitra article got on the radar of WikiProject Physics and WikiProject Pseudoscience. As far as I can tell, there are three points which should be addressed:

  • For a biography, there is severe lack of biographical data: Born when and where? Eduacation? Career?
  • On scientific matters having mass media, or a web portal, as a single source is not very satisfactory. OTOH, without the sensationalizing of the media, Mitra would hardly be significant enough to get an article.
  • The physics claims in the article have to be toned down, as the vast consensus in the field judges them worthless, e.g. But, unfortunately, when it comes to gtr there is no simply polite way of describing his level of understanding, which literally does not rise to what is expected of -undergraduate students- taking a first course in gtr (c.f. the well known textbook by Schutz). [8] -- this is not some USENET bully, but physicist User:Hillman who is one of our best General Relativity editors (who seems to have stopped editing out of frustration). --Pjacobi 08:11, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about locator dots on maps

[edit]

Hi - Have you noticed the question I posted at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps#Locator dots? I'd really like to hear from some of the map "regulars" about this. And if you have any ideas for other ways I might solicit responses, please let me know. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 03:57, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vote removal

[edit]

I believe you have inadvertently removed my support vote to Caroline Island. [9] =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:38, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SO SORRY! I would never do that on purpose. I went to put it back, but see you already did.Rlevse 12:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
