ArbCom 2019 election voter message
Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Citation bot at Christmas Oratorio page
Please keep citation bot away from the Christmas Oratorio page. Its last edit there was unhelpful: it messed with perfectly formed templated citations, changing the content of some of them into something incorrect. Tx. --Francis Schonken (talk) 22:27, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
- Again, please keep citation bot away from the Christmas Oratorio page. --Francis Schonken (talk) 06:17, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
- This wasn't an intentional revisit; it was running through categories. I'm sorry for the imvalid edits.
- @Citation bot:, please review the edits on Christmas Oratorio to review the edits.
- —Ost (talk) 17:16, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
For clarity, this was the most problematic one: The bot changed,
- Wessel, Jens (2015). "Köthen (1717–1723)". J. S. Bach und die italienische Oper / Drammi per musica für das kurfürstlich-sächsische und polnische Königshaus zwischen 1733 und 1736 (PDF) (dissertation) (in German). Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. pp. 25–44, 47, 99–100.
{{cite book}}

{{cite book}}
: Invalid|ref=harv
(help)
I have no idea why: the external link should clearly be attached to the title of the book – it is not a link to the "Köthen (1717–1723)" chapter, so I do not see why a bot would make such decision which is to all extent and purposes erroneous.
Also, the bot should not change
|title=Bach Werke Verzeichnis: Kleine Ausgabe – Nach der von Wolfgang Schmieder vorgelegten 2. Ausgabe
...to...
|title=Bach Werke Verzeichnis: Kleine Ausgabe – Nach der von Wolfgang Schmieder vorgelegten 2. Ausgabe |title-link=Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis
The "title-link" parameter is not included in the "full parameter set"s at Template:Cite book#Usage: if its not included in the "full parameter set" of the template documentation, no user should have to use it, and certainly no bot should "impose" it overriding a user who uses all applicable parameters from the "full parameter set". Also, not really a task for a bot per current provisions of WP:COSMETICBOT. If you think this change is necessary:
- put the template documentation up to speed;
- bring it up on the article's talk page.
Then the bot also removed
|url=https://journals.qucosa.de/ejournals/bjb/issue/view/170
from one of the cite templates. That is a perfectly viable link. It (currently) leads to the same web page as the link generated by the doi parameter, but those web addresses are not the same, and one or the other might go to another page over time: the redundancy creates a better fall-back to reach the reference for verifiability purposes if one or the other should become unavailable over time. Anyhow, not a bot's decision to make: if you want to change that for that template on that page, then take it up at the article's talk page. --Francis Schonken (talk) 22:34, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you
I just wanted to drop a note of thanks. I saw you ran Citation Bot on an article I recently created Bibliography of the Russian Revolution and Civil War. I never knew such a thing existed and this will make entering citations much easier. I wish I had known about it when I started the article, but as I add to it this will really help. Hope your day is great. // Timothy :: talk 16:18, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

It was for Wikidata purposes as description said "WD". I have forgot to restore previous version. Thanks Eurohunter (talk) 20:14, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry if my edit summary came across as critical; I did see that you had an edit summary, but did not correlate the "WD" to "Wikidata" in that context. Is breaking a redirect, updating the WD item, then restoring the redirect the correct way to link redirects to WD items? I don't know enough about the rationale behind that project to complain, but I have never liked that it does not allow linking to redirects while also limiting pages to be linked to one item; it feels like it improperly assumes how our project uses redirects. —Ost (talk) 20:41, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Moving pages in a user's sandbox
Hi @Ost316: I had been working on André Aubréville in my sandbox, when it was somewhat summarily removed, which was not helpful to me, as it contained information which did not form part of the final article, but which I find useful, and had wished to use in constructing a further article. I have now lost these and must find them again (not always easy). Just wondering why you felt the need to act so summarily: the article had barely been completed I had thought sandboxes were essentially the province of each user. Surely it is up to me to decide when I wish to publish the article. Not sure quite what is happening, and very much hoping I will not again end up with unexpected empty spaces in my sandbox, nor have an article moved before it is ready....MargaretRDonald (talk) 04:45, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- see User talk:Fastily#Moving pages in a user's sandbox -FASTILY 05:17, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- Fastily accurately explains that I simply moved the page to your userspace because it was created in the mainspace (MargaretRDonald/sandbox/André Aubréville to User:MargaretRDonald/sandbox/André Aubréville) and then requested that the inter-namespace redirect be deleted. At that time, it did not contain any meaningful information; it was on WP:SHORTPAGES because it only had an {{Expand French}} tag and a references section. I apologize for causing confusion and potentially extra work for you. I see that you have since found the article and edited it there. —Ost (talk) 15:57, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Double hyphens in code
Normally, you'd be right to replace double hyphens with em-dashes per MOS:EMDASH. However, that aspect of this edit was in the wrong because it is showing a computer command. Any computer code should be treated as an exception to the rule. Please keep that in mind when using AWB. – voidxor 04:55, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Page creation question
How do I talk to you on your talk page. Can you be so kind as to create a wiki page for Brooklands, Manitoba. It was its own villiage at one time and I want to share information on it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gonow81 (talk • contribs) 02:53, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonow81: To ask a question, you should create a new section, add your comment, and sign your comment with ~~~~. You can also use {{ping}} to reply on your page and notify the other editor. As for your question about creating the page in question, your best approach would be to create the page at Draft:Brooklands, Manitoba and get it moved to the mainspace with the Articles for Creation process. You need to include reliable references that indicate why the topic is notable for a page. I don't know anything about this topic, but since it redirects to St. James-Assiniboia, Winnipeg, that may also be an appropriate place to add information about Brooklands, in lieu of its own page. I've also added a welcome message to your talk page, which provides some additional places where you can learn about editing and receive assistance. —Ost (talk) 16:35, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
North of the Yukon
Hello. You moved the page from North of the Yukon (1939 film) to North of the Yukon (film). There are at least two films released under that title. I hadn't finished my investigations and work of an earlier silent film and thus hadn't added it to the disambiguation page yet, but now I have. The silent film, directed by John Ford and starring Tom Mix, titled North of Hudson Bay was released in Great Britain as North of the Yukon. So it is less-U.S.-centric and "sufficiently precise" as article titles should be to restore the year to the title of North of the Yukon. Let me know if policy doesn't call for treating alternate titles the equally across the board. Thank you. DiamondRemley39 (talk) 10:44, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- @DiamondRemley39:Thanks for explaining your intentions; I apologize and should have waited to make the move. I noticed that the other title had an incoming link and didn't realize about the alternative title of the other film. I've proposed deletion of the (1939 film) page who's only history is as a redirect, so that the (film) page can be moved back there. With the content back at (1939 film), (film) can then be turned into a redirect to the disambiguation page. —Ost (talk) 01:41, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Sounds good! I should have waited to make the disambiguation page until I was sure about the other film as well. I am new to disambiguation and sloppier that I'd like to be. Thanks for taking care of this! Have a good night (or whatever time of day it is)! DiamondRemley39 (talk) 01:46, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
- It's usually better to include all content or an edit summary that explains more is coming, but this is really not a big deal; I could have also reached out to you or waited, and in the end it should work out. Thanks for taking the time to improve Wikipedia! If North of the Yukon (1939 film) gets deleted before I notice, you should be able to move North of the Yukon (film) back to it yourself. —Ost (talk) 02:49, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Veronica thessalika
What exactly is the point of a redirect that does nothing except refer to itself in a list? Plantsurfer 17:47, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Plantsurfer:The redirect is so that someone who searches for or links to the term Veronica thessalica can be taken to the article about Veronica (plant), as Mount Olympus does. The circular nature is that it is linked to from Veronica, not the existence of the redirect itself. I'm unclear what your intention was in reducing the page to a {{short description}}, which made it appears as a blank page. If you believe the topic is notable, you can add content and references to the body outside of {{short description}} to expand it from a redirect; if you feel that the redirect is not useful, you can nominate it at Redirects for Discussion. —Ost (talk) 20:55, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Anton Jamnik
Dear Ost316, I see, that you reverted the blanking of page-redirection regarding Anton Jamnik. But I suggest (only don't know how to do it), that this "fake page" should to remove, because it seems, as exist the file about this person, but in reality - no. Now I am creating the articles about current Slovenian prelates. Recently I created: Alojzij Cvikl, Franc Kramberger, Marjan Turnšek, Stanislav Lipovšek etc. and I am planing to create Jurij Bizjak, Peter Štumpf etc. And also not exist article about Anton Jamnik, who is notable enough, to have own article, not only redirection as "a member of the Catholic Episcopate " (Wikipedia:WikiProject Catholicism/Notability guide). For these reasons maybe better not only to blank, but to delite this redirection. With regards, --Noel baran (talk) 16:34, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Noel baran:Blanking a page that you have not authored is not appropriate. If you believe a page should be deleted, it should be addressed at WP:XFD—in this case, at WP:RfD. Anton Jamnik is linked to from several other pages and appears to go to a valid target, though that's not to say that there may not be a better target. There is also no need to preemptively delete a page if you are planning on developing content for an article; you can develop the content in your sandbox or at Draft:Anton Jamnik and then move it over the redirect when it is ready. —Ost (talk) 16:49, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for an advice. I am over 10 years in wiki, but for me is still very difficult with "the technical things", but I not understand, what it means to "developing content", if an article not exists. Redirection should to help, but in this case it only makes a wrong expression, that an article with an autentical content exits. For example, if somebody is searching Samuel Langhorne Clemens, the redirection helps to identify, that article about this person exists, but under a pen name, that is more famous. But in any way, if you said so, I'll leave it so--Noel baran (talk) 17:11, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Noel baran:We may not have even had Draftspace 10 years ago, so it's understandable that you may not have come across it. I apologize if I am too technical with my responses and will try to at least link to relevant related information, but I can try to further clarify if it is too complex.
- Redirects are used for a variety of purposes. This one may have been created because others also felt that the individual was worthy of being linked in articles, but there was not a specific article about them. Directing it to a list gives a little information about them (that they were an auxiliary bishop in Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana), until an article could be developed. If you want to create the page, you can just remove the redirect and add whatever you intend to write, but leaving a blank page until you write the page isn't helpful to anyone that might click on the link from one of the pages that currently link there. The way to create a page that seems to be preferred in recent years is to draft the article at Draft:Anton Jamnik or even User:Noel baran/sandbox. If you're the only one that edits the draft, you can then edit Anton Jamnik and copy and paste what you wrote over the redirect. If someone else has also edited the draft, you should use Requested Moves or Articles for Creation to move it over the redirect.
- Based on your assertion of notability, I have also tagged the redirect with {{R with possibilities}} to indicate that it is a topic that likely can become an article. If you do start the article at Draft:Anton Jamnik, that template will also update to link to the draft. —Ost (talk) 21:23, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Reverted Treck
Hello, I reverted the article Treck because you deleted it. I am an embedded software developer, so I can confirm firsthand that Treck is a notable TCP/IP stack. On the other hand, making it a redirect on the grounds that it is a common alternate spelling of "trek" is IMO a bad choice because I had never heard of that alternate spelling before I saw the redirect page on this site. The alternate spelling "Treck" of the word "Trek" is not notable. It's certainly less notable than the TCP/IP stack.
- An editor's opinion of a company and the bare-bones information like their webpage is not enough to indicate to other editors that Treck Inc. meets English Wikipedia's requirements for notability, which is why another editor (@PohranicniStraze:) promptly nominated the page for speedy deletion after your most recent edit. (Note, that I reverted that edit because I believe that the redirect is useful, especially since Jan Jansz. Treck is now mentioned on the page. Arguably, Treck can also point to Jan as an {{R from surname}}, if the archaic spelling is ignored.)
- This company may indeed be notable, but if you want to create the page, the onus is on you include enough information show that it is. That means that you need references that aren't self-published to show that this topic warrants coverage. I suggested how you could do this on your talk page: "To start a page about the Treck company, reliable, third-party sources are needed to indicate that the topic is notable. Since this redirect already exists, it would be best to start the article in at Draft:Treck or Draft:Treck Inc. and use the article for creation process.". Creating the page as a draft will allow you to take the time to add references and work with reviewers to address any questions about notability.
- Also, please be aware of the three-revert rule, which prohibits continued reversion of edits and can lead to editing privileges being blocked. Rather than continued editing back and forth, I suggest we discuss this further at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Companies, if additional opinions about needed about the notability of this company.

Hyremoon Park
Hello, thanks for putting my article into a separate space. I actually want to delete it completely, or rename it, because it was created in error. But I can't find how to do this despite trawling through the reams of Wikipedia instructions. Any suggestions? Thanks, Hyperman 42 (talk) 20:10, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Hyperman 42:Probably the easiest method to remember is to blank a page that you recently created. Someone will generally tag or delete it via Speedy Deletion using {{db-author}} to indicate that the author blanked the page for deletion. Instead of blanking the page, you can also use that tag yourself. In this case, I've tagged it and linked to this discussion so that the person who deletes it can see that you expressed that it should be deleted. —Ost (talk) 21:26, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
The redirect to Stonewall Jackson Middle School
There must be 30 schools so named (look at https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22stonewall+jackson+middle%22&t=ipad&ia=web ) It's misleading to take the user to only one.
That RfD is way too complicated. I can't even follow their instructions on how to make it simpler. deisenbe (talk) 14:32, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Deisenbe: On your talk page, I made a suggestion of where this page could have been appropriately moved to, as I had a feeling that was your concern. Thank you for your clarification. I've WP:BOLDly moved it to that destination, as it does seem like an ambiguous term that warrants disambiguation. However, the method you used is disruptive and you could have asked for help about listing the page with {{help me}}.
- While the instructions for listing a redirect for discussion do look complicated, it boils down to substituting {{rfd}} on the page that you want to discuss and then listing the page with {{rfd2}} on the redirects for discussion page. I assume the simpler method you refer to is using WP:Twinkle and the instructions for turning it on are at Wikipedia:Twinkle#Quick_info. This will add a new menu at the top of all of your pages (near the Edit link). The XfD option from that menu does tags the page and lists it with the other discussions, so you don't have to do it manually.
- While in this case a quick search across the English Wikipedia shows that various Stonewall Jackson Middle Schools are mentioned on Wikipedia articles (so this could be a valid disambiguation page, which I've started), the mere existence of other similarly named topics doesn't automatically warrant listing them all, if they're not notable or related to existing topics. —Ost (talk) 14:59, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University
Hi, you reversed my edit blanking the redirect from "Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University" to "National Cheng Kung University." Per the NCKU website (found at https://researchoutput.ncku.edu.tw/en/organisations/national-cheng-kung-university), the institution was never named "Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University": After the end of the Japanese occupation, the central government of the Republic of China took over the college in October 1945, and changed its name to "Taiwan Provincial Tainan Junior College of Technology" in February 1946. In October of the same year, its status was upgraded and renamed as "Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering". In August 1956, it was restructured and renamed as "Provincial Cheng Kung University". In 1971, it was finally upgraded to the status of national university and was named in full as "National Cheng Kung University", with four colleges including College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Liberal Arts and College of Management at that time. and thus the redirect should not be present. I believe that the revisionist redirect was authored by ultranationalist Chinese Wikipedia editors who bristle at the term "National" when referencing Taiwan's universities, similar to how the PRC refer to Taiwan's president as "Leader" and does not refer to Taiwan's "National University" system but rather as "Taiwan Provincial University system." Thanks! Dosafrog (talk) 22:11, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Dosafrog: Thanks for your response. I don't know enough about Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University, but blanking pages is not the correct way to delete pages outside of your userspace. If you believe that the redirect is inappropriate, you should nominate it with your explanation at Redirects of Discussion. Redirects are created for more than just official names, so it may still be determined to be a valid redirect if, for instance, people may be likely to search for the erroneous name because it is used in reliable sources. —Ost (talk) 23:12, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Tanvi hegde
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Tanvi hegde, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:
- It appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tanvi Hegde. (See section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) If a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
- It appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), individual animal, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. (See section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Hello, thanks for message. I just tryed remove to old name because that was unexplained relocation of the University of Belgrade related pages, not based on a discussion/grammar corrections. - @Filipid011:You may want to discuss it with the editor that moved the page, but you can also submit a technical move request (because a non-privileged editor can't move a page when an existing page has history) at Requested Moves. In this case, it can be listed as a request to revert an undiscussed move. —Ost (talk) 18:18, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

shoestring potatoes
I explained in the edit notes why I erased the linking to pan fries, which are unrelated to shoestring potatoes except in that they are both potato products. Also, the word shoestring does not even appear on the pan fries page. The redirect is now to French fries, where the word shoestring potatoes does at least appear four times, if a bit strangely. Kdammers (talk) 17:32, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Kdammers: You explained why you made the edit, but you did not explain why it was necessary for you to edit against policy. You blanked the content of the page, and there are few instances where is is acceptable. In this case, you should have used the Redirects for Discussion process to bring attention to the misleading or potentially unneeded redirects. Had you done that, the volunteers would have likely seen what I did: Shoestring potatoes was only part of a larger problem where a bot changed numerous redirects to American Fries to bypass a double redirect after French fries was moved there; when American Fries became a redirect to Home fries, a bot then updated the target again. I reverted those bot edits to restore the redirects as they were originally intended. —Ost (talk) 17:47, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- Wikipedia has a policy of being bold. That's why I removed the bad re-direct. If I had known about Redirects for Discussion process and what it means, I would have used it, but Wikipedia has so many things for editors that are not easily known about. I note that I did give an explanation of my actions whereas the person reverting did not as far as I know.Kdammers (talk) 04:03, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
