Follow-up WCNA 24

[edit]

Hi Peaceray! I'm Balaenicactus, unfortunately I missed your workshop on Using Wikipedia films and film makers red links to seed Wikidata, yet would like a lot to stay in touch for future projects. Part of my work in the Spanish Wikipedia is creating, editing and maintaining pages regarding film, filmmakers and their creators, so I'd love to talk and see how we could collaborate on this. Have a wonderful day! Balaenicactus (talk) 23:53, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata default label

[edit]

Hi. Thank you for bringing up the default label feature in Wikidata during your WCNA 24 presentation, as I had been unaware of it. However, you mentioned that only basic Latin characters should be used, and no diacritics. This doesn't seem to match the help document, which says "Use the name in native language and native script as the default value." It seems like consensus on this may have changed recently per a talk page discussion. Is the character limitation still listed anywhere? Nick Number (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Number: I am sorry, I must have got it wrong! I am not sure where I arrived at that faulty conclusion, but I must thank you for pointing me to the help document. Peaceray (talk) 19:45, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, no worries. I suspect I will be making a lot of use of this feature going forward. Nick Number (talk) 19:50, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Re: October 2024

[edit]

Hi again. Last night, I tried to change the current Sydney Sweeney profile pic to another photo from her most recent event (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ana_de_Armas_and_Sydney_Sweeney_at_the_2024_Toronto_International_Film_Festival_03_(cropped).jpg), a substantially higher-quality close-up than the current profile pic. I then had this exchange with NoobThreePointOh: User talk:NoobThreePointOh/Archive 2#Sydney Sweeney profile pic. Would you possibly be able to grant the permission that he references in his last reply? Thank you very much. RangerFanAaron (talk) 23:33, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@RangerFanAaron: I think there is some sensitivity as you twice switched out a high-quality image that highlighted Sweeney's face for a less recent upper body shot that emphasized her cleavage. As for File:Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival 03 (cropped).jpg, it is certainly not of higher quality than File:Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival 04 (Cropped).jpg as both were taken by Jay Dixit within a few minutes of each other last month at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Although I personally prefer the File:Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival 04 (Cropped).jpg version, I freely admit that it is a matter of preference. It is a bit early for WP:EDITCONSENSUS to apply, but since you have been reverted three times on these photo edits, I think it would be best if you read & take to heart the suggestions the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle has. Yes, the next step would be to open a discussion at Talk:Sydney Sweeney. Peaceray (talk) 00:39, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Peaceray: What I mean is, my picture is of much higher quality in that its resolution/clarity holds up at a much larger size - its file size is almost 5x larger than the current pic's, 1.64 MB versus the current pic being only 340 KB. RangerFanAaron (talk) 01:04, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RangerFanAaron: File:Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival 03 (cropped).jpg is 1,616 × 2,056 pixels at max & File:Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival 04 (Cropped).jpg is 1,242 × 1,864 pixels max. Most of the difference has to do with that 04 is more tightly cropped than 03, so really we are talking about a pretty negligible difference for an infobox picture that is going to a smaller resolution anyway. This thus becomes not an argument about resolution so much as how tightly one wants the picture cropped & whether one wants a smile. More editors seem to want the more tightly cropped picture with a smile.
You should make any further discussion on the article's talk page. Peaceray (talk) 04:15, 12 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections: Candidate instructions

[edit]
Administrator Elections | Instructions for candidates

Thank you for choosing to run in the October 2024 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • October 15–21: SecurePoll setup phase
  • October 22–24: Discussion phase
  • October 25–31: SecurePoll voting phase
  • November 1–?: Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the SecurePoll setup phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend the SecurePoll setup phase from October 15–21 getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.

The discussion phase will take place from October 22–24. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). Please make sure you are around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.

On October 25, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote tallies cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your tally during the election. The suffrage requirements are different from those at RfA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time, perhaps a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). As this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

You're receiving this message because you are a candidate in the October 2024 administrator elections.

DON'T BITE

[edit]

I'm all for that, but look at these contributions, which also prove that they were not new. Drmies (talk) 18:56, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Drmies: I took a look at a number of Special:Contributions/Prince Deckow Sr.'s warnings. From the several that I examined, the reversions were all unwarranted & all the warnings that Prince Deckow Sr. issue were {{uw-vandalism4im}}. My objective is to repair the harm that Prince Deckow Sr. has done, even if I welcome a few vandals in my haste to rectify any harm done to many innocent IP editors.
My first edit on a red link IP talk page is always one of the Welcome-unregistered templates. If I have reverted an IP edit & one of the non-constructive welcome templates does not apply, I will use {{welcome-anon}} & then add the appropriate warning.
In this case I believe that speed is probably better than accuracy. The vast majority of IP editors make good edits while the rest either make bad edits out of ignorance, are outright vandals, or a pushing a POV. I rather make a mistake welcoming the latter than to leave AGF IP editors with a final warning on their page.
If they are making bad edits, I have faith that we editors doing edit patrol will catch up with them. Peaceray (talk) 19:15, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Peaceray, it is totally possible that that user was warning inappropriately--did you report them? Drmies (talk) 19:17, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Others reported that editor & Prince Deckow Sr. has been blocked. The editor may have also been a sock puppet. Peaceray (talk) 19:20, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Our Admin Election Test

[edit]

Hello there. As we're preparing to move from one stage to the next, this is just a quick note from one member of the test group to another, wishing you well in the process of this new alternative to RfA. It seems that there are more of us in this group than some in the community anticipated, so i hope that doesn't make the experience any the worse for all of us. Whatever our individual results, i thank you, along with the rest, for stepping up and testing this process; happy days, ~ LindsayHello 07:21, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Metformin

[edit]

Hi Peaceray, I’ve tried to reach out regarding the edits I made to the Metformin article. The article I’ve cited is from a peer-reviewed journal, which you can view here: https://academic.oup.com/ije/issue/51/6. Additionally, Peter Attia MD has reviewed this journal article and discussed its findings in detail: https://peterattiamd.com/a-recent-metformin-study-casts-doubts-on-longevity-indications/. Could you please explain how this doesn’t meet Wikipedia’s scholastic standards or WP? I’d like to ensure that my contributions align with Wikipedia's guidelines, and any feedback would be appreciated. 38.122.245.52 (talk) 15:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You did not specify which article from the International Journal of Epidemiology journal you were citing, but based on your additions here & here, this is the article that you were referencing:
  • Keys, Matthew Thomas; Thinggaard, Mikael; Larsen, Lisbeth Aagaard; Pedersen, Dorthe Almind; Hallas, Jesper; Christensen, Kaare (2022-12-13). "Reassessing the evidence of a survival advantage in Type 2 diabetes treated with metformin compared with controls without diabetes: a retrospective cohort study". International Journal of Epidemiology. 51 (6): 1886–1898. doi:10.1093/ije/dyac200. PMID 36287641.
For medical articles, there are additional requirements for citations. One can find these requirements at WP:Identifying reliable sources (medicine) (Shortcut: WP:MEDRS). The section that addresses the citation above is located at WP:MEDRS#Avoid primary sources. Keys et al is what is considered primary because it is a single clinical study. Since the annals of medicine are littered with single clinical studies that are contradictory & sometimes discredited, we look to secondary sources that evaluate multiple primary sources. As WP:MEDPRI states, A reason to avoid primary sources in the biomedical field – especially papers reporting results of in vitro experiments – is that they are often not replicable: references ommitted  (see also replication crisis) and are therefore unsuitable for use in generating encyclopedic, reliable biomedical content. This is the default position that editors who prolific edit medical topics thus take.
There is an exception, If conclusions are worth mentioning (such as large randomized clinical trials with surprising results), they should be described appropriately as from a single study. That is followed with the caveat If no reviews on the subject are published in a reasonable amount of time, then the content and primary source should be removed. Even though Keys et al was large (Singleton cohorts were derived from a 5% random sample of the Danish population recorded in the Civil Registration System (CRS) since 1968 and twin cohorts from all twin pairs recorded in the population-based Danish Twin Registry (DTR).), it was published 22 months ago & should have been evaluated by secondary sources by now.
Regarding the source that you posted here & here:
peterattiamd.com is self-published that can hardly be considered a scientific journal that can be used to summarize scientific consensus. This is clearly a case where WP:MEDRS is more stringent than WP:RS.
My advice to you would be to open a discussion on the talk page that includes the citation from Keys et al, a statement to the effect that this contradicts other studies in that it finds no evidence of a survival advantage or equalization through Metaformin operation, that it involved a large sample (again, Singleton cohorts were derived from a 5% random sample of the Danish population recorded in the Civil Registration System (CRS) since 1968 and twin cohorts from all twin pairs recorded in the population-based Danish Twin Registry (DTR).), & that you need assistance in finding this covered in systematic reviews, meta-analysis, & review articles. I would invite Bon courage using the {{ping}} template & invite others to the discussion by substituting a {{Please see}} template at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine. The syntax for that would be {{subst:Please see |location= Talk:Metaforin#<whatever you call your section heading>}}.
I hope this is helpful. Peaceray (talk) 16:58, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Second opinion on a page

[edit]

Hello @Peaceray,

I was wondering if I could get a spot check from you on a page that has a lot of bias being added to it. The Tanya Woo page has had a few people on both sides add in statements that are biased and unsourced, and I have been working to make sure its as fair and balanced as possible (especially during an election).

I have tried to integrate some of their sentiment were possible so that its not just all my voice in it, but some I have been just reverting and deleting all together. There has been a spike on the page view since ballots hit people's mailboxes, so I want to make sure they are reading a well source, unbiased page.

If there are glaring issues that you see, I am more than happy to make any edits. I am mainly looking for someone who has been doing this for awhile to give a thumbs up.

Let me know if you need anything from me.

Thanks. -- Bpuddin (talk) 16:49, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have met a few experienced & valuable editors who have said that their first edit was vandalism. One of these became a Wikimedian of the Year. I am loathe to completely block someone indefinitely without giving them a second change. I know their are exceptions to that, but I take them on a case-by-case basis. ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My home page.

[edit]

Good morning I am fairly new to Wikipedia and I was wondering if you could take a look at my user page and give some feedback on it and if all the information is alright. Some recommendations would also be appreciated. Thank you :D TocaTheFrog (talk) 10:26, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TocaTheFrog: Good Tuesday! There are a couple of things in the Wikitext of version of your user page that I think need tweaking. I would direct you to two resources first.
As per WP:UP#What may I have in my user pages?, your WP:User pages can be whatever you want it to be as long as it does not violate WP:UP#What may I not have in my user pages?. Note that if there is some CSS error, some user, or more likely a WP:BOT may come along & fix it.
Now that said, here are two things that I spotted, the first major, the second minor.
  1. Your headings are different from what MOS:GOODHEAD & MOS:SECTIONHEAD recommend for headings. For example, you used = '''<u>Who am I?</u>''' =[a] & == '''<u>Why am I here?</u>''' ==, whereas the preferred format for page headings would be ==Who am I?== & ==Why am I here?==.
  2. Try not to leave newlines between bullet headings. This creates an almost imperceptible greater spacing between *, but if you are using #, then it will restart your numbering sequence.
I hope this is helpful. Fell free to look at the wikitext of this section to see how I formatted things. Also, you can put any shortcut in the search bar to facilitate getting to the associated page. Peaceray (talk) 16:51, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ Note that although they are not visable, I am using the HTML code tag to format the code segments & the nowiki Wikitext tag to prevent the code from operating Wikitext formatting.

IP editing issues with an IP you previously blocked.

[edit]

Good evening to you, Peaceray. I seek your help with a matter concerning an IP you previously blocked, 141.154.49.21. Said IP has removed pertinent news from the Current Events section of the website earlier this evening. I responded by undoing that change, and their response is that they have reverted my change and informed me that "That is not at all how it works, Danegeld".

My change summary stated that "If it's here, then it's relevant." The news item was properly sourced, and I believe that the editor on the end of that change, may have been acting in bad faith, because the edit was about the recognition of the Palestinian state, by Canadian MPs.

I do not know what to do about this, and wondered if this could be (as the last block was set for), a contentious subject, and whether that block prevented the editor from making those changes. It is news, it is current and in my opinion it should be on that page.

Since this isn't the wiki I'm most used to editing, I'd like to ask for advice on how to handle this topic. I recognise it's not every user's "cup of tea", but if it is newsworthy enough that CBC broadcast it, then it's news, isn't it?

Sorry to tie up your talk with this topic, but I hope you can help. Thank you. Dane|Geld

  • The material should be restored & 141.154.49.21 warned with {{uw-ewsoft}} or {{uw-ew}}. It is incumbent upon the disagreeing editors then to try to bring the problem editor to talk pages. I emphasize the WP:BRD & WP:VNT essays (& it helps to mention that they are essays). It is important to work your way through the levels of warnings. Being warned via 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th warnings is important when you are landing complaints on WP:AIV. Really, I should have insisted on it before initially blocking. I would also ask for advice at WP:ANI. I think it would be better to involve another administrator(s) at this point. Peaceray (talk) 05:43, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Subscriptions auto-archival

[edit]

It seems I have the serendipity of running into you again! I was looking through a maintenance category and noticed your subscriptions subpage wasn't archiving properly. The specific problem is the |archive= argument isn't set to a valid value. There are a few ways to fix it, but it depends on how you want it to work. If you want it to just create a separate page for every year, you can do the following:

Annual archive solution
{{User:MiszaBot/config
| algo = old(366d)
| archive = User talk:Peaceray/Subscriptions/Archive %(year)d
| archiveheader = {{Annual archive}}
}}

This will create each archive with the page title format "User talk:Peaceray/Subscriptions/Archive year" so that {{Annual archive}} will function as a header for each archive page that detects and lists all the years. Alternatively, if you just want to go the common route where you start counting from 1 and continue counting up from there:

Sequential solution
{{User:MiszaBot/config
| algo = old(366d)
| archive = User talk:Peaceray/Subscriptions/Archive %(counter)d
| counter = 1
| maxarchivesize = 150K
| archiveheader       = {{Archive}}
| minthreadstoarchive = 1
| minthreadsleft = 4
}}

{{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis}} might also be another option, though I'm less familiar. Retro (talk | contribs) 07:58, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
