New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

[edit]

Hello Pichpich,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Question

[edit]

How do you add the •Delete, or •Keep on the AfD page? Jonchache (talk) 21:22, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jonchache. Looks like you almost had it! If you start a new paragraph with a * then it will give the desired result. If you precede it with one or more colons (:) your input will be indented. For instance, if you write
:::* '''Keep''' :
the result will be
  • Keep
Hope this helps. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 21:52, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'll try it out Jonchache (talk) 22:28, 10 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello I was the one who was adding dates to the World Piece Tour. I know the dates were incorrect because I copied and pasted the dates from another tour from the same band so I would have the template in place with date, venue and city. But instead of fixing all of the work I did, you deleted everything! Seriously I spent almost 2 hours trying to figure out this stuff. perhaps you could of fixed my work instead of just erasing everything! Mpdaly567! (talk) 03:13, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Method to cite private email exchange as a source?

[edit]

Good afternoon: I have obtained a fact about someone (deceased), but want to add it to their Wikipedia page. This is not original research. However, the information was obtained via a private email exchange. Can you suggest a workaround to make it a Wikipedia-friendly source ? DarkStarHarry (talk) 19:16, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I see no workaround. If you can't release the content of this email or can't prove that the source of this email is authoritative in some form or another, then you can't add the fact to this person's biography. You will have to wait until this fact is published by some reliable source. Pichpich (talk) 00:28, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Foundation project to improve PageTriage

Mildred Johnson Library

[edit]

Hello Pichpich, I received a message from Wikipedia indicating the article Mildred Johnson Library had changed. Looking at the edit history, it is not clear to me what has changed. Is there anything I need to know? I appreciate your patience and assistance in clarifying. Note: This is the first article I have contributed to Wikipedia. Thank you. Amycarson12 (talk) 23:24, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Amycarson12. From what I can tell from the history, you had created the article in Draft space. The draft was evaluated by Hoary (talk · contribs) who found it was solid enough to become an actual article. So it's now at Mildred Johnson Library. I then marked the new article as patrolled. Note that Onel5969 (talk · contribs) has added a notability tag to the article. Ultimately, if that problem isn't resolved, the article could face deletion, but I wouldn't worry too much about it as there are some references although most have problems (primary sources, sources not independent of the subject, sources that don't cover the topic in detail). If you can find sources that meet the requirements, then add them and remove the tag, but leave it in place unless you fix the issue. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 18:05, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Deccan Gladiators

[edit]

Hello, Pichpich. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "Deccan Gladiators".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Category chemometricians

[edit]

Hello Pichpich. I created the category, chemometricians, but did not know how to make it a subcategory. Would you mind making it a subcategory of analytical chemists rather than computational chemists? My chemometrician friends tell me that would be more appropriate. Computational chemistry is more related to theoretical physical chemistry. Curious405 (talk) 13:08, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I've kept both categories. Do you want to remove the computational chemists category? Pichpich (talk) 14:03, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Pichpich. If it's acceptable to keep it in both categories, let's keep it there for the time being. I want to investigate this further.Curious405 (talk) 18:33, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on 2023 in the sport of athletics requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. – Pbrks (t • c) 00:14, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sit, Boris (16:32, 22 April 2023)

[edit]

Hi, I am experiencing difficulty uploading pics to my draft. Do I have to wait for the article to be reviewed before I can add in images?

Many thanks Sandra --Sit, Boris (talk) 16:32, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sit, Boris. It shouldn't be a problem unless your images are not free images. If the images are free, then you should upload them to Commons. The simplest way to do that is by using Commons upload wizard which will guide you through the process. Once they're uploaded, you can use them in your draft without any restrictions. If, on the other hand, these images are copyrighted, then you'll have to wait for the article to be out of draft space before including them and even then, there will be restrictions on which non-free images are permitted. (For all the gory details, see here) Hope this helps and if not, just ask again! Pichpich (talk) 19:59, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, is mine for sure going to be published? --Jaxli Hirt (talk) 20:18, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, that draft has no chance whatsoever to be accepted for publication on Wikipedia. Since the draft is about a minor, there's a good chance that even the draft will be deleted shortly. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 21:58, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Neda000 (12:55, 13 May 2023)

[edit]

Hi How do I start a page? I want to write an article about my mum (as Mother’s Day gift). She is an author. I want to put a mix of professional and personal information in her page. Not sure if there is a template to start with. Also can’t figure out where the start page it. Thanks for your help Neda --Neda000 (talk) 12:55, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Neda000. I could point you to the Wikipedia:Article wizard but there's a problem: you probably shouldn't be writing about your mother because it puts you in a conflict of interest. Moreover, articles on Wikipedia should be written not from a personal familiarity with the subject but on reliable published sources for verification purposes. Now, I have no idea who your mother is, but not all authors are sufficiently notable for an article on Wikipedia. Even if they are, much of the personal info (say the name of her cat, but even things like her date of birth) should be left out if they haven't been published in a reliable source. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Files_(file_manager) I have now created this design. I'm not sure if I did everything right, because I actually just wanted to translate an article into English. When will this then be published? Does it fit like this or do I have to change something? Thank you very much for your answer in advance, WikiScis --WikiScis (talk) 16:03, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WikiScis. I see that you've gotten into a bit of a spat with Chris troutman, but I must say that I basically agree with him that the draft in its current state is not fit for the article space. In particular, I agree that the draft does not sufficiently rely on content published in independent, reliable sources. I'll be more than happy to review any future version of the draft if you want me to. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 21:14, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help me to do all bus Route information in Hong Kong? Sodium Chloride PH 7 (talk) 01:25, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sodium Chloride PH 7. I'm not convinced that we need articles for each bus route in Hong Kong because these topics don't seem necessarily notable enough. Perhaps a simple list would do the job. Pichpich (talk) 17:39, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But in Chinese encyclopedia, there are all routes of Hong Kong buses with a independent article.
Why is that notable? Sodium Chloride PH 7 (talk) 00:10, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Every wiki has its own criteria. On en.wiki, the basic criterion is WP:GNG and as I said, I'm not sure individual bus routes meet it. Pichpich (talk) 12:20, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

[edit]

Hello Pichpich,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Yes, yes, in 2018 you added an EL to Why Planes Crash. I clicked it today and got "unsecure" webpage messages. Both on my lap top and iPhone. Says the webpage may be spoofing a legitimate website. The EL is now commented out with an explanation. But I wonder if you've added the problem EL to other WP pages. Thanks. – S. Rich (talk) 21:29, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Srich32977. Well it was 5 years ago so who knows, but I see no compelling reason for me to add this EL to any other article. A linksearch ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:LinkSearch?target=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weather.com%2Ftv%2Fshows%2F ) shows that there are 4 other links with the exact same problem though and they should be given the same treatment! Question from MaybeKindOfSortOf (08:45, 25 June 2023)

[edit]

Hello, I have a lot of questions. One is for the last 12 years I have been hacked. How is this possible when I change devices? It is somehow achieved by Location, and Branded Google Play store. I know that Everything Google is Spoofed on all my devices. I came to wikipedia because I know that someway , someone here can help. And also the person that is doing this to me is A Administrator for Wikipedia. I know that everything is shared. And I looked at my profile settings. They are the same as well. And I cannot change it. I know that I am talking with you but (Your current IP address is 2600:387:f:6736::1, and the block ID is #134142.) If I am blocked then how am I speaking with you? --MaybeKindOfSortOf (talk) 08:45, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry but I do not have the faintest idea what you are talking about. You're obviously not blocked (although the underlying IP might be) so there's nothing stopping you from contributing constructively to Wikipedia. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 12:10, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from MRMEGADETHFAN (01:15, 14 July 2023)

[edit]

hello i am looking to help others add things to certain articles and am wondering how i contact them --MRMEGADETHFAN (talk) 01:15, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand the question. If you want to collaborate on an article with other interested editors, you should take a look at the page's history to see who has contributed to the article already and contact them directly on their talk page. Another way to proceed is to start a thread on the article's talk page where you can discuss the kind of content that you would like to add. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 01:54, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Dankra01 (08:06, 21 July 2023)

[edit]

Hey, I'm Daniel and according to Wikipedia you are my mentor! So I generally wanted to introduce myself. ^^

I just made a Wikipedia account for myself to translate a page into German. I have two questions regarding that with the second one being split up into "sub-questions":

1. Do you only speak English or are you someone, who's also German and that's why you were assigned to me as a mentor?

2. 2.1 When I'm translating this article from English into German, do I specifically have to put German sources into the citation or is it fine to just copy the mentioned sources from the English article into the German translation? I would of course put those footnotes at the same place where it was named in the original. 2.2 Do I maybe have to search for the German releases/equivalents/analogs of those titles and can use those as my sources? Or do I really have to search for sources myself and delete everything from the English version, which I can't name a source for in German? I'm asking this question specifically, because it confuses me to this day, why some translations are that much shorter than the original text is. And I mean I do get it, that it's hard for a reader to fact check the sources, if they are for example written in Russian or French, although the reader himself might only be able to speak English. Still an argument could be made to use an online translator for fact checking. Sure - the finer details would get lost along the way by doing so, but it is still possible to see, if the source is referenced correctly and isn't talking about something completely different. 2.3 And then there is still very much the possibility, that I as an editor can just assume, that the people visiting my translated article definitely are able to understand English, because it is taught in every school without exception, this being the best way to communicate around the world. What about this scenario?

Thank you very much in advance!

I Hope to hear from you soon! - Daniel --Dankra01 (talk) 08:06, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and sorry for the very late reply. I've been away from Wikipedia for a few days. I was assigned your mentor by pure chance. It so happens that I know a bit of German but not enough to be of much help to you. The "rules" about how to treat sources in various languages differ so the process to translate from German to English might not be exactly the one you need to follow when translating from English to German. In general, I believe sources on de.wiki can be in English though it's always nicer if you can find an equivalent German-language source. On en.wiki, deleting sources is always considered a bad idea and sources in any language are welcome. If you're translating English articles in German, then it's probably a better idea to ask questions on the German Wikipedia because German editors know more about the details of de.wiki guidelines and policies. Question from Cothromas (13:16, 22 July 2023)

[edit]

We need help from other editors here to resolve this page. Content that is civil and written is good faith is being deliberately being deleted from the talk page and the WiKipedia page itself is being continually edited to remove positive factual information about Dr Treacy, and leave only negative posts. His many international awards, including 'Top Global Aesthetic Doctor' and his pioneering research used now internationally are also continually removed. Question from Dolariaga23 on Manny Fernandez (wrestler) (23:54, 27 July 2023)

[edit]

Hi, I was editing the Wikipedia page about the wrestler Manny Fernandez because his age is 69 as it was his birthday today (I found out recently), and I was trying to change his age description on the page from 68 to 69, but it's a chart imported from another website, and I can't find his age listed when I edit it because the website looks different when to edit it than when you view it, if you know what I mean, and I was hoping that you could help because you're my mentor, and I would like to learn from you, and then pass that knowledge on if, and I hope I will, become a mentor to other new Wikipedia users. --Dolariaga23 (talk) 23:54, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Archaeoknowlogy (18:55, 30 August 2023)

[edit]

How can we access images for Wikipedia use? Everything seems copyrighted? Thank you. --Archaeoknowlogy (talk) 18:55, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it is true that the overwhelming majority of images found on the Internet are copyrighted and this is something that Wikipedia has to accept. Of course, there are a few places where you can find free images that can be uploaded to Commons and used in articles without any restriction. For instance, images of the Library of Congress listed here are free to use and reuse as are most of the images produced by employees of the United States as part of their job (see details here). You can look at Wikipedia:Public domain image resources for a long list of places where you can find public domain images. (There's a similar page on Commons: Commons:Free media resources/Photography.) Pichpich (talk) 19:52, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New pages patrol newsletter

[edit]

Hello Pichpich,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Question from Celebbeing (10:54, 26 September 2023)

[edit]

When will part of my published article appear on Google? --Celebbeing (talk) 10:54, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Celebbeing. I suppose you're talking about Aina Asif. First, let me note that it isn't your article since many people have contributed to it. Note also that your edits have been undone because they were not referenced to reliable sources and were not written objectively. I'm not the one who undid these edits but I support the editor who did. As for Google, you can check that Aina Asif's Wikipedia article already appears in Google searches. New articles start appearing in Google searches only after some set period of time (I never remember but it's something between 50 days and three months iirc). The Montenegro Times

[edit]

Hello! I was wondering about the list of articles at List of newspapers in Montenegro. You unlinked The Montenegro Times from the DAB page in question after BLAR'ing, and only left the external link to the website in its place. I was wondering whether this would be a very useful redirect in this instance? People that might search for The Montenegro Times are now only met with an external link to the site itself, and no encyclopedic content. If it doesn't pass GNG on its own, I don't know how necessary of a redirect this would be, as we don't have anything here seemingly. Thank you, Utopes (talk / cont) 03:20, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Utopes. I feel like it's still the best solution. Readers get to understand that we have no in-depth coverage of The Montenegro Times, yet we are still able to point them to the right website. Would you prefer to delete the redirect and the mention on the list? I think that would be Option 2 on my list. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 03:26, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That was my consideration, yes (to delete). That, and/or maintain it on the page as a red-link, and/or draftify the former contents of the page to at least present the possibility of the newspaper meeting the GNG in the future. In the meantime, what is currently a redirect that points to an external link, it feels more like a "directory entry" to me, (and disproportionately boosts the newspaper in the act of it not meeting the general notability guidelines 😅). Utopes (talk / cont) 05:07, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Meh... I have to confess that I don't really care! If you want to draftify an earlier version of The Montenegro Times, go ahead, but I'm pretty sure that it will amount to deletion in six months. As for the external link, I still believe it's useful for the reader of the list but here too, if you feel strongly about it, remove it. Pichpich (talk) 18:33, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

List of power stations in Tunisia

[edit]

I reverted your edits to List of power stations in Tunisia because the subject does not seem to be notable and I have therefore restored the redirect. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:59, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris. I didn't start that article and I certainly agree that in its current state it was a terrible list but still, I don't get the notability argument. We have over a hundred similar articles in Category:Lists of power stations by country which are not always properly sourced, whereas the two-power-station start for Tunisia had sources for basic data. Anyway, I'm not going to fight this given the state of the incomplete list but for the record, I think it's a perfectly viable topic for an article. Hi and welcome to Wikipedia. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Drafts and in particular the subsection Creating and editing drafts. Before creating the draft, you may want to take a quick look at WP:BIO and WP:GNG to make sure that the person you want to write about is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. If they're not, you will not be able to move your draft to the article space. If you have any other questions, do let me know. Restore this category on the articles

[edit]

Dear Pichpich,

The Category:Chenab Valley is an important category for articles related to the Chenab Valley affiliated with WP:CVJK. This category encompasses not only geography but all articles related to the Chenab Valley. I kindly request the restoration of this category on the articles from which it has been removed. While I've managed to restore it on two articles, it appears that it has been removed from many others.

Your cooperation in maintaining this category would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Regards ❯❯❯ Chunky aka Al Kashmiri (✍️) 22:21, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TheChumky. Let me insist. The category Category:Chenab Valley is not intended to contain people. It's a geographical category and as such can contain things such as rivers, towns, roads. If you want to categorize people, you should use categories such as Category:People from Doda district and other subcategories of Category:People from Jammu and Kashmir by district. If you want to simplify work for Wikipedia: WikiProject Chenab Valley, then you should categorize relevant biographies' talk pages as is done in Category:WikiProject Chenab Valley articles. It looks like it ended up at AUX (company), which I think is slightly better but won't object to other moves from you. It's odd/funny how that happened, though, looking at the history. Skynxnex (talk) 17:30, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well I took the lazy route and just added a space, but I agree that "company" is a more common term than "enterprise" so it ended up at the right place. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 17:33, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jgrec4 (20:45, 29 October 2023)

[edit]

Hi, what always has perplexed me about editing in Wikipedia is given that there are multiple contributions, who decides in which version a description is unbiased and balanced. And for example, when it comes to choose a photo to represent a building, who decides which is the best photo? Thanks --Jgrec4 (talk) 20:45, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What happens in practice is that most edits are improvements over the previous version and slowly but surely, articles become more precise, more balanced, better referenced and verifiable and so on. But, of course, this doesn't always work, especially with more contentious topics. In that case, we try to work by consensus and hash out disagreements on articles' talk pages. For somewhat trivial decisions such as which photo is better, you can use the tried and tested BOLD, revert, discuss cycle: change the picture, see if anyone reverts your change and if so initiate a discussion about it, either with the editor who reversed your change or on the article's talk page. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 21:20, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I am only seeing it now :) Jgrec4 (talk) 08:48, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

November Articles for creation backlog drive

[edit]

Hello Pichpich:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1500 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pichpich thanks for being my mentor --ArkansasDev (talk) 22:48, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:2023 in Hong Kong cricket indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. plicit 14:42, 15 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Glaucousbeech (03:22, 16 November 2023)

[edit]

Hello! I'm not super interested in editing; rather, I created an account to have a backup of my by-now significant number of saved articles within reading lists on the mobile app. I cannot find a way to access these on the desktop site when I am logged in. Can you help? --Glaucousbeech (talk) 03:22, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

But should it be Jailaiah Harmon? That's why I didn't go ahead and move it myself and instead posted a talk page query. LadyofShalott 17:16, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I didn't see that talk page question. The correct title (or so says Google) is Jalaiah Harmon. This page already exists and is a redirect, so I tagged it as a CSD#G6 (move). I guess you're an admin so you can perform that move. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 19:08, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Batrose (06:49, 21 November 2023)

[edit]

Hi! I was wondering how to make an article --Batrose (talk) 06:49, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Batrose. I suggest you first create a draft article. The instructions can be found here. Before you start, you should make sure that you're working on a viable topic and in particular, you should make sure that the topic of your article meets the notability criteria. Otherwise, your work will just end up being deleted or stuck in draft space forever. If you have any further questions, let me know! Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 00:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:31, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Connie Nyamwija on User:Connie Nyamwija (12:59, 29 November 2023)

[edit]

Hello. I want to start publishing with wikipedia. How can i do this --Connie Nyamwija (talk) 12:59, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Connie Nyamwija. You can already edit any article (just hit the "Edit" tab on the top right of the article). As your account is too new, you cannot currently create a new article but you can create a draft article, work on it and request it to be moved to the article space once you're done editing it. Let me know if you have any further questions. Pichpich (talk) 16:38, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Im editing a page of a Janet Jackson song do you have any advice --Elgin Liebenberg (talk) 20:18, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Be WP:BOLD (but not reckless) and have fun. And if you end up in a dispute over your edits, calmly discuss it on the talk page Talk:When I Think of You. Also, don't forget the five pillars of Wikipedia. That's basically what you need to know to start! Pichpich (talk) 20:22, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

hi how i can creat my own wiki with my ouwn name for public . im an artist --Anchorrajan (talk) 23:44, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anchorrajan. It depends on what you mean. If you literally want your own wiki-like website, you should take a look at MediaWiki which is the software that powers Wikipedia but also many unrelated wikis all over the web. If what you want is your own Wikipedia article, then I'm sorry, but the answer is that you shouldn't write an article about yourself as this puts you in a conflict of interest. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 01:51, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from DrGeorgeAllan (10:38, 19 December 2023)

[edit]

Hello - what is an important factor for me to consider when editing someone else’s text? --DrGeorgeAllan (talk) 10:38, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if you think your edit is an improvement, then it shouldn't really matter who wrote the initial text. It's the Be bold principle (which shouldn't be mistaken for "be careless"!) and the idea is that articles improve over time because editors like yourself are not shy about editing them. Thank you for your kind greeting and I appreciate your willingness to assist with answers to any questions I may have. I was a user several years back for a few years, actively. I am able to recall many of the larger, core concepts and techniques however, many things are different and several items were also forgotten so I’m nearly positive I will require your kind assistance or guidance in the future. Thanks again. --RyNotNiw89 (talk) 05:44, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
