Northern Palm Squirrel

Hi, I was wondering how you could tell the difference between a Northern Palm Squirrel and an Indian Palm Squirrel. I had some difficulty trying to find which was which. I am from Canada and our squirrels are very different from each other.

DGER (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 03:08, 1 May 2009 (UTC).

Just happened to spot your query and thought it might help to chip in. Having seen them both in their heartlands where the two do not overlap, it seems easy but there are recent observations that suggest that they overlap in some area and here they are said to be a bit tough to separate by the number of stripes (as their older names would suggest) but the calls appear to be quite distinctive, the northern (aka five-striped) has a chipping call while the three-striped (southern) is distinctly squeaky. The geographic distribution is a clue within the ranges although some recent surprise sightings from outside the range have been noted. Location would help a lot. Shyamal (talk) 04:16, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Shyamal. DGER is asking about this img particularly, which I have requested for renaming as Northern Palm Squirrel. It was previously on the Indian Palm Squirrel article. In this case, your squirrels shot in Agra, Delhi is almost undoubtedly the Northern one. The Three-striped Palm Squirrel (Indian Palm Squirrel) is endemic to South India and Sri Lanka. The IUCN entry for the NOrthern Palm Squirrel mentions the fact that the southern limits of this squirrel are a bit hazy, and there seems to be more and more overlapping areas found. But, the northern limits of the Indian Palm Squirrel are quite clearly the central indian hills and your squirrels are photographed far norther than that. Hope this helps. prashanthns (talk) 05:57, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok. They certainly seem like northerners ! A rather large congregation too ! Shyamal (talk) 11:05, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the hook 228 characters-28 too many. Please shorten it a bit more. ThanksSmallman12q (talk) 21:05, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Worked on the orignial hook and shortened it further. Have also put an alt hook. Could you check now?prashanthns (talk) 06:53, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Looks good, thanks. I looked the article and noticed that your are manually adding references...have you considered using a reference tool? Some I suggest are adding importScript('User:Odie5533/SnipManager.user.js'); to Special:MyPage/monobook.js and going to Special:Preferences under the "gadgets" tab and enabling refTools. Let me know if you need help.Smallman12q (talk) 10:54, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Ref Tools

(undent). Sure. Thanks. Just did it. Will check out this tool. Spend a lot of time manually adding refs. :). Thanks for all the help. prashanthns (talk) 10:56, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Let me know if you have any problems wit the ref tools. I've found they can save a lot of time when adding refs in addition to making them neater.Smallman12q (talk) 20:13, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Third party uploads

Better to get the copyright owners to upload stuff themselves. Otherwise an OTRS mail would be required from the actual copyright holder. Volunteers then tag the specific files with a verification label. A very painful process, I have had some images untagged thanks to lost/unprocessed mails to OTRS. XCF is not a supported format. Shyamal (talk) 04:19, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh. Thanks. Noted. Well, I have a bunch of images on me given by two friends, several from the North-east. Presently, they dont seem to be willing to upload it themselves. Any other ways of doing it? What if I have a single mail from them to me and to that permissions address saying that a particular number of images with list of taxa are handed over to me for uploading under GFDL onto WP commons? prashanthns (talk) 05:00, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I guess blanket mails also are fine, but you need to give the OTRS the list of files. Shyamal (talk) 06:33, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion, it is a helpful idea!

I did move the links for Wiki-Conference New York 2009 to my user page as you suggested. Thanks for a sensible and practical suggestion. Best wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 13:06, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

On my user id

Thanks for your note.

My user id is a shortened form of Gobeshok Gobochondro Gyanotirtho Gyanorotno Gyanambudhi Gyanochuramoni, the name of the intrepid brain-washing scientist (enacted by Santosh Dutta) in Satyajit Ray's 1980 children's classic (which was also a satire on the Indira Gandhi's Emergency) called Hirak Rajar Deshe.

Peace,

Damselfly ID

Hi sorry my knowledge of Damselflies in that part of the world is very limited. To me it looks like it is newly emerged, judging by it's light shiny look (perhaps emphasised by the cameras flash)so it could possibly be in its juvenile form but I can't say for sure. Sorry I can't be of more help. Samasnookerfan (talk) 17:51, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Sankey

Some ideas here History_of_Bangalore#Water_shortages Shyamal (talk) 09:02, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

London Gazette is text only, so no images of him there I'm afraid. There's no image in the ODNB either. From a google image search, he has his back to camera in this photo http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/images/exhibitions/month/douganadd9/DouganAdd9_0039.jpg and I suspect he's the chap to the right and behind the bloke holding the flowers in this picture http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/images/exhibitions/month/douganadd9/DouganAdd9_30crop.jpg (both from http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/exhibns/month/mar2003.html) but the copyright status of these is unclear anyway. David Underdown (talk) 14:22, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Wow! That's some work you've done there. Pity, these photos are quite un-usable. prashanthns (talk) 14:25, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Very interesting photo-sleuthing there ! Yes, I think a trip into the Karnataka High Court building might help. Shyamal (talk) 14:55, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
No photograph in Fazlul Hasan's Bangalore through the centuries either. Col. A. Le Messurier seems to have been with Sankey in some 1879 exploits. Shyamal (talk) 15:17, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Did you know Richard Hieram Sankey

Hi, regarding the hook, can you please add a link to current MEG article? --Vinay84 (talk) 12:47, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks. I just saw the MEG article and read in the article that MEG originated from the Madras Army and not the Royal Engineers. Is it then fair to draw this connection? Also, did this happen in Sankey's time, or much later? Anyways, do suggest an alternate hook that includes MEG which I can consider changing. Feel free to put the alt. at the template talk page itself. prashanthns (talk) 15:57, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
His initial service was in the Madras Sappers, heonly transferred to the Royal Engineers proper after the assumption of Crown Rule. David Underdown (talk) 16:08, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Nice keelback

Had one coming home some months back during the rains, could not photograph, it was too nervous but such a beautiful shade of green ! Amazing blue bearded bee-eater too !! Shyamal (talk) 12:14, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! These uploaded last week (an many more yet to be!) are from old images of mine at BR Hills. I was just trying (for myself and for User:Kalyanvarma) any batch uploading scripts/tools. Tried one that runs with a perl script, but was not able to. If you are aware of any, let me know. What I want is to upload a number of images under the same license. If there is anything that can read out the different fields of the image from a csv/excel file and that is easy to set up and use, let me know. Am in Rabat for a week now. Community de-Adminship - finalization poll for the CDA proposal

After tolling up the votes in the revision proposals, it emerged that 5.4 had the most support, but elements of that support remained unclear, and various comments throughout the polls needed consideration.

A finalisation poll (intended, if possible, to be one last poll before finalising the CDA proposal) has been run to;

  • gather opinion on the 'consensus margin' (what percentages, if any, have the most support) and
