- Well I must say it's been awfully nice that you lot at Wikipedia can still remember the halycon days of when you waited four minutes for Mined-Out to load off cassette, only to be greeted by the infamous

. I think we still have some T-shirts around here, and I will mention to that nice Mr Frey about uploading Commons. Back to the trusty Hermes now..... Lloyd Mangram (talk) (cont) 21:11, 1 December 2018 (UTC)- I subscribed to Crash after issue 1. Had about 12 binders of the thing. I was all over those Ultimate: Play the Game games. - First issue I got was #4 (May 1984) from which I decided to buy Jet Set Willy, and I was a subscriber from about '86 - '88 if memory serves. I transferred all my old tapes over to one of the first PC emulators after a friend made up a parallel port cassette adaptor, and I still have all the games sitting here. I put them on my son's Raspberry Pi and they work just fine. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 22:11, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

- Ah yes, "Look at the mess this guy is making of a bacon sandwich. In 48 hours, he could be doing the same for Britain!" On the other hand, he won't call a referendum that he only promised because he didn't think he'd win the election otherwise (and only then in coalition with another party that he could blame for not implementing it), smugly assume the result would go his way, and cause de facto civil war when it didn't, forcing him to resign and run away and hide. So, in retrospect, wouldn't life have been better if we'd had Red Ed as PM? Incidentally, I recall a bit of brouhaha at the original DYK which blew up one hour after I'd passed RfA, which was fortunate. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:33, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

You should probably go look at it, or like... whatever. Hamster Sandwich (talk) 23:41, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for starting this, I wasn't sure where to begin if I'm honest. I've added a few other sources. Part of the problem, and I'm rather surprised at this, is that there doesn't appear to be an easy to access online book that gives a general description of the typewriter or its history, and we're reduced to scrambling around at the edges. In its heyday, it was popular and well-known model, so I was just amazed we didn't have an article for it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:40, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
- NP. I never have a problem writing, I only have a problem thinking of or finding a worthy topic. In the past, if I've looked something specific in the project and not finding it, I would fill in the blank. Happens rarely nowadays. Sorry about the rocky start... I was broadsided by only a couple editors, most everybody else was helpful, if not welcoming. I've pretty much determined to rise above. I don't need admin tools for editing. My previous focus was actually heading for dispute resolution and mentoring problematic editors. Hard to believe, ain't it? [1] . Best regards; Hamster Sandwich (talk) 21:49, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Hamster Sandwich: That's alright. I think it was just an issue that you've been away for a while and not realised the rules had changed a bit. The DYK is progressing now so we're heading in the right direction. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:42, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

- Question for you: Could you take a look at Marten Hartwell and give it a review, however ad hoc it may be. That article has, over the years has developed into a rather complete picture of the topic. I'd like to see it promoted to "GA" but have no clue. Also, how is the Hermes 3000 article moving along? Hey, I realise I have made precisely zero progress with this review. I'd like to get my head clear of my personal stuff before I get stuck into something that takes more effort than simply pointing out the half-dozen DYK errors every day, a trivial task which takes seconds and no major effort. I understand that if you want someone else to take a look at it in the meantime, that's fine. I'm sorry for getting into something which I can't competently complete, I'm still doing a lot of sorting out for what happened a fortnight ago, and I'm the only one doing it. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:21, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

You have no other edits under this IP so I don't know the context; plus it is generally preferable to keep communication on talk pages wherever possible, so anyone can assist. - Hmm, half that band's albums have articles (which granted, look like they should all be deleted), yet the band itself is "A7".. Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:08, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Actually, Did You Know People Can Fly? has an AllMusic review in the article, and Set Sail the Prairie is reviewed by several reliable sources. I probably wouldn't have caught this either given the state of the band's article, which has facebook, MySpace, and bandcamp as references, almost always a sure sign the band has no notability. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions)
GAN
It looks like as a result of the latest "update" from Arbcom to my editing restrictions, I will no longer be able to conduct GAN reviews in the best interests in Wikipedia, without running a risk of being accused of calling into question the competence of the nominators, whether that be deliberate, incidental, explicit or implied, even by a bystander (and there are plenty of those). So I'm afraid that even once I'm finally through the whole funeral thing, I still won't be able to do your Karen Carpenter review, unless I receive clarification that conducting reviews in the same way I've done them at GAN, FLC and FAC, for the past 13 years is still acceptable to these individuals and those who would use any excuse to block me for two months. Apologies for wasting more of your time. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:15, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018
Hello Ritchie333,
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.
- Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.
See also the list of top 100 reviewers.
- Less good news, and an appeal for some help
The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.
- Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019
At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.
- Training video
Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that one feel out of the sky and landed on you...
- Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was, "Oh no, not again". Many Wikipedians have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that, we would know a lot more about online encyclopedias than we do now. DYK for King's Cross St Pancras tube station
On 15 December 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article King's Cross St Pancras tube station, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that King's Cross St Pancras is the busiest station on the London Underground? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/King's Cross St Pancras tube station. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, King's Cross St Pancras tube station), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Another good one! - Do you think you could look at Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland for GA? I asked TRM before, but he fears to be sanctioned. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:24, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
- By way of a link, I was tinkering about with a (badly played vaguely remembered version of) the Radetzky March on the piano recently (when in St Pancras, you might as well use 'em), so if I get any time this week I will have a look. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:25, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

GS prior reports at AN/I
I saw your question on the case request. I'm not going to reply there, mainly because the whole page is going to be archived and forgotten pretty soon once the clerks open the case. Let's continue the discussion elsewhere. I'll see about digging up AN/I links. I did see some requests when deciding whether to open the original AN/I page and following up but didn't save the links. As you're probably aware, the organization of the archive pages and the sheer volume of posts makes it hard to find things there. UninvitedCompany 17:28, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
Also, I used to have a Nord Electro. Sold it, too many instruments in the house UninvitedCompany 17:29, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I had a look earlier and I was swamped with minor AN3 reports, finding it difficult to find any good conversations. I just want to have a look at a recent dispute and give my thoughts to it as a neutral party. I'm hoping this dispute can be resolved amicably, but am aware of a longstanding issue that anyone complaining about an admin on ANI automatically gets assumed to be a troll, a sockpuppet, or a banned user (or possibly all three) and occasional users haven't had the experience to make an effective argument. I've still got my Electro, it's the first digital keyboard I found that was good enough to replace a real Hammond and Leslie that I could finally sell the damn things and just use that. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:40, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- If it helps, here's every section in the AN/ANI archives to contain the string "GiantSnowman" in the header (other than those in which he was reporting someone else and used "reported by…" in the section header):
- Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive825#I_want_to_report_administrator_GiantSnowman (closed as "Tibullus please add references when adding content, later is not good enough. GS please be a bit nicer. Nothing to be gained from continuing this"
- Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive260#Complaint_re_administrator_Giant_Snowman (closed as "This is, as GS has pointed out, a content dispute; take it to the article talkpage, please.")
- Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/3RRArchive220#User:GiantSnowman_reported_by_User:Macktheknifeau_(Result:_technical_decline) (closed as "Technical decline")
- Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive763#WhiteWriter_and_Giant_Snowman (Closed as "Nothing to see here. If anyone wants to open an SPI on the reporting editor, feel free. Indef'd per SPI result of "no master found but clearly somebody's sock" and WP:NOTHERE.")
- Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive980#User:GiantSnowman (closed as "ETIQUETTE & CONTENT DISPUTE: Not (currently) appropriate for an ANI resolution.)
- Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/3RRArchive239#User:GiantSnowman_reported_by_User:OAlexander_(Result:_No_action) (closed as "No action").
- While obviously that won't catch those instances where his name wasn't included in the section header—and because of his long feud with Vintagekits a decade ago he appears in the ANI archives hundreds of times—there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern. ‑ Iridescent 17:49, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- In particular, apart from the recent thread, and the one six months ago, everything else appears to be ancient history. Sure, if there's a pattern generally that did apply to GS (but now doesn't as he's learned from it), let's discuss that, but let's put away the feathers and tar first. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:54, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- I think this is now moot; this level II warning accompanied by this rollback of what was clearly a good-faith attempt to add the subject's age, while a case regarding being overly-hasty to issue warnings was in progress means I'm not going to waste any more time trying to defend GS. Sometimes you just need to cut your losses. ‑ Iridescent 18:29, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- Agreed, though there are far worse offenders out there for this sort of thing. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 08:49, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

While I was hunting archived ANI discussion links, I found more GS stuff in WP:AN/IncidentArchive998, which is more recent (closed two days ago) than the Archive980 link posted above, and then saw Ritchie333's 17:18, 17 December 2018 UTC question to UninvitedCompany on the WT:RFAR/GScase page. I posted it there (diff) but I was leaving a footprint in the wrong place and thanked whoever reverted me later. You can revert this too if it's more than or simply not anything you wanted. – Athaenara ✉ 14:42, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
I can't find the entry that I believe I previously saw. Govvy's complaint, which Iridescent included in the list upthread, is certainly an example of a complaint not taken seriously at AN/I. The responses from Masem, Alex Shih, Newyorkbrad, and Thewolfchild all indicated (to varying degrees and with varying nuance) agreement that there was a problem. Davey2010 took GS's side in the dispute but clearly had not reviewed the diffs as he had the facts of the dispute wrong. Nonetheless, the discussion was "closed" without action by Serial Number 54129 and then again by Lourdes without action. UninvitedCompany 19:40, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi UninvitedCompany, Thanks for the ping, This year I've certainly jumped on the ANI as well as the Arbcom bandwagon which looking back is something I now regret, In some ways I feel I've spent more time at the drama-venues than I have improving this Encyclopedia,
- Anyway inregards to my comment there I quite honestly can't make head & tail of it so probably best to ignore it (if you haven't already),
- Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:57, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Hey!
Just in case you don't get the ping, Lily Madigan is proposed for deletion. Not proposed by myself, as the article was originally a redirect, the message happened to appear on an editors talk page that I watch :)-- 5 albert square (talk) 22:02, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- Looks like it's been deprodded. I vaguely recall her name cropped on the front page of BBC News one day and I said "wonder what Wikipedia has to say about her", and found nothing. She certainly appears in many news pieces, some quite recently, and she has attracted a lot of transphobia, so I'm wondering if that had something to do with it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 22:20, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah it has now. I was thinking surely being the first trans woman to be Womens Officer would make her notable enough to be included in Wikipedia!-- 5 albert square (talk) 01:56, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
italics title not correct
Hi Ritchie, just a quick question, the page Arrest of Juan Requesens has its title in italics, even though the italic_title template isn't on the page. It's also not correct, it's not a noun phrase so shouldn't be in italics. Do you know how to fix this? Kingsif (talk) 20:56, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
- Kingsif, Looks like JJMC89 has fixed it; court cases are italicized and so {{Infobox court case}} automatically italicizes page titles unless set not to. Galobtter (pingó mió) 04:26, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

Advice?
Hey Ritchie! Hopefully you are enjoying the winter festivities but I was hoping I could trouble you for some advice. I'm just finishing my BA and I'm looking to get back into some content work. I was wondering if you could suggest an area where I'd be able to to bring something up to GA status that is slightly more challenging than my usual Olympics articles, but would be a good stepping stone for someone who hasn't done a lot of content work. How can a magazine article that is not online or only readily available in a special region be made available for use as a citation?
Hi Ritchie333, I have a magazine article that I want to use as a citation but I was wondering if the article needs to be scanned or somehow otherwise shown to exist if it is not readily available to verify. I assume that if I scanned it I would not be able to upload it anyway because of copyright infringements. Do you have any advice on this? Thanks. KevinJardine (talk) 04:36, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
- @KevinJardine: The guidelines for sourcing state that it is not a requirement for sources to be easily accessible and verifiable by everybody - numerous articles I've worked on have had citations to books or documentation from the National Archives, none of which can be found in a Google search. Just specify as much as you possibly can, ideally the title of the work, the name of the magazine, volume / issue number, date / year, page number and International Standard Serial Number if it exists.
{{cite magazine}}
contains further information, but even putting the information in plain text inside a <ref> tag should be acceptable. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:52, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
