October music

story · music · places

You may remember Maryvonne Le Dizès, my story today as on 28 August. Some September music was unusual: last compositions and eternal light, with Ligeti mentioned in story and music. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:28, 3 October 2024 (UTC)

Striking photo of Stoika. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:24, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
Storye book finds the great photos. - Today is the birthday of Tabea Zimmermann, and you can listen to the exact concert I mentioned last year ;) - I'm fascinated by Rohan de Saram. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:48, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
Topping that today, because you can't only watch the birthday child in last year's concert (story) but also this year's ;) - rainy day pics - we call it museum weather --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:43, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
Museum weather! Never heard that expression before, but I shall use it going forward. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:26, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
;) - Today I remember an organist who was pictured on the Main page on his birthday ten years ago, and I found two recent organ concerts to match, - see top of my talk (cat to come next pic upload, a bit similar to the one on top with the big eyes) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:16, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
Today brought a timely promotion of Helmut Bauer to the Main page on the day when pieces from Mozart's Requiem were performed for him. - Finally: the jumping cat, but not watching the page ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:30, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
Wonderful article on Bauer; congrats on ITN! Of course, the cats are very cute so the jumping one is making its debut up at the top today. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:19, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for both. I began the article just feeling it was my duty to translate from German which others would have more trouble, and only then found out that ecumenical praise was his thing! I watched the Requiem (sometimes just listening): good music, especially the Mozart, and a great speech by the present bishop who really knew the other well. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:35, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
Listen to the music in my story: I put it on DYK 10 years ago (mentioning Ukraine) and heard it today for the first time. That violinist/violist was incredible! Last month someone added to her article that she died, - a year ago OTD - which is also the wedding anniversary of two people who heard her play when they were children, - so I love that she plays viola d'amore in that music ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:27, 15 October 2024 (UTC)
I made Leif Segerstam my big story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:54, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
Gerda Arendt, Wonderful article on Leif. Truly, enjoyed learning about his life and work. Thank you for your efforts with this. Regarding the Summer Olympics photo on his page, it made me wonder one thing about orchestras, which has been on my mind for a long time. Why do the men wear tuxedos, and women wear whatever black dress they choose, including bare arms, and some even have nude hoisery? I've seen this in many parts of the world, and it stumps me. I've also seen it otherwise, where women wear a standardized outfit, just like the men wear tuxes. Wondering if you have thoughts on this. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:09, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
What a cat, reflected! - No idea but I can ask my professional brother. - My story today is a cantata 300 years old, based on a hymn 200 years old when the cantata was composed, based on a psalm some thousand years old, - so said the 2015 DYK hook. I had forgotten the discussion on the talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:36, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Another composer, born OTD, from Japan, and I listened once to a world premiere. Voiceless Voice of Hiroshima should have an article. As this soprano. Or not? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:36, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
Turns out that today, it's one of your cats from January 2020. Gorgeous photo! --Rosiestep (talk) 16:14, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, I recognized that cat already by the caption ;) - I hope you follow my stories without invitation, three people died within two days, including The Pianist, what a life story! Same is true for Walter Jacob, I'd think. A few more hours ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:50, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
I've always been intrigued by hand doubles. Thanks for the links to Janusz Olejniczak and Walter Jacob; may they RIP. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:33, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
Thank yu for reading about a rich day. Today a caricature, for a change. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:50, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
Couldn't find the link to the caricature. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:44, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
Was in a rush, - when that happens again, click on "story" below the image, or see the top of my talk. Later, check stories for that date. - Happy whatever you celebrate today, - you got a gorgeous cat!! - More who died, more to come, and they made the world richer. Greetings from Madrid where I took the pic of assorted Cucurbita in 2016. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:40, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Call for volunteers for the research project “Measuring the Gender Gap: Attribute-based Class Completeness Estimation”

We are a group of researchers at The University of Queensland, Australia who are working on a research project titled “Measuring the Gender Gap: Attribute-based Class Completeness Estimation” (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Measuring_the_Gender_Gap:_Attribute-based_Class_Completeness_Estimation), supported and funded by the Wikimedia Foundation. Our goal is to understand how and to develop supporting tool for Wikipedia editors making decisions on how to address the gender gap in Wikipedia content.

We are looking for a passionate Community Engagement Manager who will play a pivotal volunteer role in this project to help us to engage with the Wikipedia editors’ communities.

About the Role: The volunteer will help us to:

·      Develop a plan to engage relevant Wikipedia communities with our project.

·      Identify individual editors willing to join an online research interview (this study was approved by the University of Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee, reference 2023/HE001795).

·      To understand how gender balance has been taken into account in the editorial process and decisions, as well as to discuss how a tool could be best designed to support this process.

Who We Are Looking For:

·      Someone with a strong commitment to promoting gender equality in Wikipedia.

·      Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

·      Experience in community management (desirable).

Benefits:

·      Opportunity to make a significant impact in reducing the gender gap in Wikipedia.

·      Expand your network within the Wikipedia communities and professionals.

·      Develop skills in community management, and project coordination.

For further information and expression of interests, please contact Gianluca Demartini (Special:EmailUser/Eglu81). Eglu81 (talk). Eglu81 (talk) 23:18, 15 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Welcome to the drive!

Welcome, welcome, welcome Rosiestep! I'm glad that you are joining the November 2024 drive! Please, have a cup of WikiTea, and go cite some articles.

Cielquiparle (talk) 19:42, 1 November 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, Cielquiparle. Glad to be a part of it. Figured I'd at least deal with some articles associated with WP:WPWW. Plus, maybe some random pagewatcher will see your comment here and will be inspired to "fix a random page lacking sources". --Rosiestep (talk) 13:49, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

a "cat" --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:28, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

"Memories"; good photos. New "cat" today who apparently passed a long time ago; it honors a family member who passed (I was at the funeral yesterday). --Rosiestep (talk) 16:23, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
Great cat yesterday, - those ears! - I wrote the article on one of the Sunday songs, the fall one, in memory. (Two others will have to wait until spring.) A friend lost her 90-years-old friend, unexpectedly. I met her only once, last year, but was fascinated by her broad-minded spirit; she was behind a project to match poems and garden landscape in Rombergpark, called Lyrikweg, see here. Perhaps even "notable" ...? - For a surprise, a Bach cantata is on the Main page today, where it was last year for the 300th anniversary, and they were too lazy to find something new ;) - Look at my story, and listen to the 3 whole-tone steps and the dialogues of Fear and Hope. - An open letter open to be signed (more info on the talk), - I haven't checked if you did, please ignore then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:49, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
I uploaded more pics, on a mountain in the sun above the fog. - Madeleine Riffaud - remember. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:35, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for all the improvements this month to Madeleine's bio. Very, very inspirational woman. Will hop over to WikiCommons photos later... --Rosiestep (talk) 16:20, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
thank you! - took pics of 3 cats in Brazil, will upload when back home - slowly. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:31, 25 November 2024 (UTC)
Brazil, nice! Whereabouts did you visit? --Rosiestep (talk) 12:26, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
first pics, and to tired to type the names again ;) - happy Thanksgiving! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:47, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
Great! I shall look closely once I'm home. Welcome back. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:44, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
Lovely photos. This was a favorite: "Aulhausen, orange grape leaf". Couldn't find the cats. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:43, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! - my edit summary was probably too short "first two cats were in Bacabal - to come later". I'm going to upload 16 Nov after checking my watch list, but Bacabal was 17. The trip was a 10-day celebration of a 16 Nov event, but it was also the day a dear friend died. We sang Hevenu shalom aleichem at yesterday's funeral, and it was good. His son who has a Wikipedia article sat right across the table - a fascinating talker whom I had not known. I took pics but will keep them as private as the occasion was. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:23, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
Do let me know when the photos from Bacabal are uploaded. Sorry to hear about your friend; may they RIP. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:51, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
If things go as planned Bacabal will come tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:40, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

A barnstar for you

The Women in Red Barnstar
For your constant enthusiasm for improving and promoting the project and keeping us all informed of pertinent developments, not to mention your almost daily contributions.--Ipigott (talk) 14:09, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, Ipigott. Appreciate this barnstar. When I started along these lines, I was clueless that the work would become such a passion. The best part of it, though, is the community that's developed, including working alongside you. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:41, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

TY!

The bios on the United Daughters of the Confederacy are such a good idea bc they and similar female-driven "southern heritage" groups shaped and continue to shape the way the antebellum south, the Civil War, and slavery etc are presented to the general public. And I imagine they played a role in creating newsletters like Confederate Veteran (which I've used to source articles like Morgan–Storrs duel and Alfred M. Rhett but obviously need to be used with discretion). ANYWAY keep up the good work! Cheers, jengod (talk) 00:09, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, Jengod. I appreciate you stopping by. Happy to learn about and share the stories of these women who have had a hand in shaping history. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:24, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

More assistance needed

I know, Rosie, you are a keen supporter of Wiki Edu. You may therefore be able to help with the article Lynn Rosenthal created by student user Literally Legally Blonde. I'm afraid that after checking it with Earwig's copyvio detector, I found that there were quite a number of passages which had been copied without adequate rewriting. I had hoped that after I mentioned this on creator's talk page, the necessary adaptations would be made. Unfortunately, however, two days have now gone by and no action has been taken. She has obviously tried to create an informative article but the copyvios are a serious problem and need to be addressed. Perhaps you can deal with this?--Ipigott (talk) 17:21, 27 November 2024 (UTC)

Hi Ipigott. LiAnna (Wiki Ed) has always been helpful with sorting out whom to connect with regarding WikiEdu issues, ergo, adding her here. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:28, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
This editor was last in our program a year ago and is just continuing to edit as a regular community member now. We have no way of contacting them beyond their user page, so I would encourage you to treat them just as you would any other editor. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:52, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
Noted and thanks for the speedy reply, LiAnna (Wiki Ed). --Rosiestep (talk) 18:05, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
It was Liz who asked me to check for copyvios. Perhaps she can help but I think we need to be careful not to upset an enthusiastic student editor.--Ipigott (talk) 18:50, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
  • I've now had a chance to look at this more carefully. Despite the high rating from Earwig's tool, it looks as if the main problem were two passages of verbatim quotes which were recognized as such in the article. It therefore seems to me there are no serious copy violations.--Ipigott (talk) 15:06, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
Makes sense and no worries. Glad to learn that in retrospect, there aren't copy vios -and importantly- that the student editor has become a good "regular community member". Kudos to the Wiki Edu program for that. (cc: LiAnna (Wiki Ed)) --Rosiestep (talk) 16:51, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
