Thank you!

Hi there, just wanted to thank you for the request you made on my behalf on the incidents noticeboard. I didn't even realize edit summaries could be removed! It was very thoughtful of you to request that, and I appreciate it. :) Jessicapierce (talk) 20:39, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

@Jessicapierce, no problem at all! I had a memory of seeing edit summaries removed for personal attacks and you did not deserve to have that on the internet forever. I'm so sorry you had to go through that nonsense. You stayed so cool and calm and did everything right, well done! StartGrammarTime (talk) 03:42, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! I work in customer service, so I'm pretty used to people flipping out when they think I'm standing between them and what they want. Adult tantrums are a thing. But so is kindness. :) Jessicapierce (talk) 04:39, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

SGT

Well, waiting to ask what SGT means... as for your opinions. I really think this site is having major difficulties. There may be no end to that. How about looking at the overview rather than focusing on Wikipedia principles, to which few are adhering. I was baited into a situation and you didn't even see it. Summerdays1 (talk) 07:55, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia certainly isn't perfect, but that's why we keep working on it, right? That's my reason, anyway - I've used Wikipedia so much to learn about things, I want other people to be able to do the same, and I want to be able to leave it better than when I first arrived (even if it's in a very tiny way, since I usually make very tiny edits - they add up!)
According to the code of conduct, it doesn't matter whether you were baited. It doesn't matter whether you think you're right and the other editor's wrong. Heck, it doesn't even matter if they've been temporarily blocked, or whether they've been reprimanded in Arbitration, or if they're attacking you! Staying civil and not attacking other editors is one of the [WP:5P|Five Pillars] of Wikipedia. I know it can be hard sometimes, but you have to try to rise above it and remain calm and civil. If you don't, you'll just end up blocked. Personally, I think we need as many good editors as we can get. It seems like you're really passionate about improving Wikipedia, as I am, so it would be a shame to lose you over something you can change. Just stay calm and if you feel you're being baited, don't rise to the bait - step away, look at dispute resolution options, and if other editors are deliberately making Wikipedia worse (or just making too many mistakes and not listening to polite feedback) you can be confident that sooner or later they'll be blocked and you'll still be here to keep making it better and better. StartGrammarTime (talk) 08:12, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I'm telling you this site is kind of a giant disaster. The sooner you see that, maybe there's more hope. Summerdays1 (talk) 08:30, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I found one of the biggest vandals, did I get commended? Nope, they're laughing and probably still doing stuff. Summerdays1 (talk) 08:31, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@Summerdays1 Well, if you've found a vandal, your best shot is to report them at WP:AIV - make sure to add diffs as evidence! First off, though, make sure that what they're doing matches the Wikipedia definition of vandalism - WP:VANDAL. You don't have to stand back and watch if you see editors disrupting Wikipedia, but you do need to make sure you are following the rules. Attacking them and casting aspersions without evidence will only get you in trouble, not them. So check out the Five Pillars I linked in my last comment, read through the information about vandals, and then decide what to do next. Whatever you do, though, make sure you're polite and civil about everyone involved. If someone's misbehaving it will be very clear; all you need to do is present the evidence so that administrators can look through it and take appropriate action. StartGrammarTime (talk) 08:56, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Nothing is better, maybe it worsened. Did you ever get involved in similar things? Summerdays1 (talk) 08:55, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
@Summerdays1 I'm really sorry to hear that. Do you mean did I ever get into an edit war, or find a vandal, or something else? I don't think I've ever gotten really caught up in an edit war; mostly I figure that if someone's reverting one of my edits, either I'm wrong or someone else will come along and revert them. For the other, any vandalism I've found has been really obvious - you know, swear words everywhere, or someone spamming articles with irrelevant nonsense - and usually they've come along, made a mess, and then run away. So that just makes me sigh and clean it up, like when one of my cats makes a mess! (He's a very dumb cat, but I love him).
If it's something else and I've totally misinterpreted, let me know, I'm happy to answer and try to help you with whatever's up. I hope your day is getting better! StartGrammarTime (talk) 23:27, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
The problem with this vandalism is that if I don't do anything it will not be discovered. Maybe you could look at the last month or so of Guardian H's edits. Summerdays1 (talk) 01:17, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
It's highly unusual but I have never found the obvious junky vandal. Summerdays1 (talk) 01:19, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
@Summerdays1, I've had a look but honestly I'm not seeing any edits that match the Wikipedia definition of vandalism. Perhaps I'm missing something? There's certainly a lot of disagreement but that's always pretty standard for Wikipedia, I must admit! Could you point me at some of the things you see as problematic, perhaps? StartGrammarTime (talk) 06:02, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
ElKevbo and Guardian H have been removing quite a bit of information from college and university articles. GH has also broadened the damage to other areas, people in academia and government. Summerdays1 (talk) 09:57, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
@Summerdays1, have you been able to engage with either of them on the article talk pages? Or their talk pages, if it's a lot of articles? If I were in your shoes, that would be my first move. Assuming good faith, as you know we always must, it's possible that the editors have a good reason that you and I don't currently see. Not being especially familiar with the areas you're all working in, I can't really venture any ideas as to what those reasons might be, but you should ask and see whether there's something we've missed. Remember to ask politely and in the spirit of working together, even if you think the other person might be up to no good! Edits can always be reverted if necessary, although it can be a pain to clean up afterwards, so stay calm and don't let yourself become stressed.
If you don't get any response, or if the response is rude or unhelpful, my next step would be collecting some diffs both of problematic edits and of your efforts to reach out and discuss. Then I would take that to AN/I; if you have evidence of a problem, and evidence that the editor in question is unwilling or unable to come to an agreement - and that you've been polite and willing to listen! - you can be sure other people will see what you're also seeing.
I hope things do get better soon :) StartGrammarTime (talk) 10:53, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
@Summerdays1 Oops - I think you might not get notified if I don't ping you. Sorry about that! My actual response is above this comment (because editing pings into a comment, alas, does not work). StartGrammarTime (talk) 08:19, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Talk page discussion for minor change which is correct

Thanks for your helpful reply on this topic at the Teahouse. I found a way to address the reverter's concern, proposed it as a compromise and it was accepted, so the problem is resolved.

I suppose I'm not the first editor to sense an incongruity between the three-revert rule, with which I was familiar, and BRD, with which I was not. I suspect the former preceded the latter chronologically, and that the latter won out because it more effectively cut down on edit warring. It will be admitted that there are drawbacks to letting anybody revert anybody/anything, with the onus always on the correcting editor; but I've now seen that it worked in this case and it presumably has in many others, without anyone's going down to the wire on the three-revert rule in an all-out edit war. Bret Sterling (talk) 20:45, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

That's great to hear, @Bret Sterling! There can be tension between rules, you're absolutely right, and working out what to do is harder when you haven't been editing Wikipedia for approximately forever (I definitely haven't been here long enough to know all the rules). In my experience, though, if you follow BRD things usually do work out - sometimes it's just a misunderstanding, sometimes someone doesn't have all the information, sometimes it's a word choice that means different things to different people - and even better, if you're doing your best to compromise and discuss and find consensus, you're doing the right thing and other editors will back you up if the person you're trying to discuss with gets rude or refuses to talk. So well done again on finding consensus and avoiding a 3RR ding, and happy editing! StartGrammarTime (talk) 03:21, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

Rattan, Texas

Hi, StartGrammarTime. I took a look at the link you sent me, and it was very helpful. With that said, I would like some help on what the mining sources page says before I create a new article called Rattan, Texas. Here is a link to the reference on the information: [1] Can you please give me some advice on how to mine this source so that I can create a new article without getting a copyright notification based on the mining sources link you provided me? Thank you! Colman2000 (talk) 15:52, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Colman2000! I'll definitely have a go, but before I start do you have some other sources for Rattan as well? It will be helpful to collect information from all of them and kind of cross-reference to work out where the overlaps are and what information you might need to search for to fill out the article. StartGrammarTime (talk) 05:51, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Take a look at the Texas Escapes Magazine and Rattan, Oklahoma. I can't really find other articles from which to add information. Colman2000 (talk) 05:57, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Hmmm, okay! My first worry was that usually without three good sources, articles don't make it through AfC - but I see you're confident in making articles in mainspace, and it looks like most avoid AfD, so that's great! The downside of only having a couple of sources is that it does get harder to come up with brand new sentences, since there's only so many ways to put information, but I'm sure we can do it. If you don't mind, I'll take some time and come back to you soon - I live with chronic pain and it's very distracting today, so if you're okay waiting for a bit then I'll be able to do a much better job (and see if I can find some more sources, since that's much easier on my brain). If you find anything else in the meantime please do link it, the more the merrier. StartGrammarTime (talk) 06:13, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
Sounds good! Maybe you can take a look at the close paraphrasing policy and look at the How to Write Acceptable Content section and the close paraphrasing repaired box to see what you can come up with. The last section in that box says "This version brings together information from two sources, without maintaining the previous sentence structure or style." I have to go to bed now because I have church tomorrow. If you can leave a message on my talk page, that would be awesome. Can you also leave a message for Diannaa? I do not want to be blocked for copyright again, so please let her know. Thanks! Colman2000 (talk) 06:48, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, but ..

thanks for the help. But I don't see any evidence that we should have this, as the only evidence I can find online of confusion or alternate spelling flows the other way .. Ashlee being written Ashley, for the rider. The fellow doesn't have any article I can see where his name is spelled Ashlee. So my thought is to delete that, if ok with you. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:303D:2C0D:7B3D:DA7F (talk) 18:29, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

You're quite right, IP, his name isn't usually spelled Ashlee - I put it there because we usually have reciprocal linkages between two articles, if either is likely to be confused with the other. You are of course welcome to revert it if you wish! StartGrammarTime (talk) 03:21, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Hello Wiki Friend @StartGrammarTime see this if it's a good judgement, Please help, An editor that condemned all the source of this subject is bad faith edit, I Saw this here on google “DJ Kelblizz” on Top DJs in Nigeria when I do a google search and source here WP:NGRS 105.116.1.14 (talk) 17:36, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
Hi IP editor, I'm going to start by saying that you need to assume good faith, and not assume someone's made a deletion nomination with evil intention. I think the editor who nominated it is just trying to follow Wikipedia's rules, like we all should.
If you think DH Kelblizz is notable and should have an article about him, you need to find some good sources. They have to be independent (not interviews), from reliable sources (WP:NGRS is great for Nigerian newspapers/websites that are reliable) and have significant coverage of him (so they need to be about him). Can you link me to the source you found in your Google search? The search itself doesn't count, but Google is getting the information from somewhere, so you will have to find out where. If you can show me where the information came from, we can try to work out if it's a good source. StartGrammarTime (talk) 19:35, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Yuka Kitamura draft feedback

Hi there, it's Gracen from the Teahouse! I've been working on Draft:Yuka Kitamura in my free time over the past couple days. You mentioned being willing to help out with the article; it's pretty short right now and I plan to extend it a little bit more (hopefully not too much, I'd like to avoid WP:CRUFT), but would you be willing to take a quick look over it and give some feedback? /home/gracen/ (yell at me here) 20:01, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

Hi again @GracenC! More than happy to help out if I can! The most important thing is always sources, because your article must flow from them - and in order to establish notability, you need sources that meet WP:42, the 'golden rule'. This says you are looking for significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic. So the first thing to do is assess sources, and one thing that is always frustrating but unavoidable is to look out for interviews - they're not independent. They can be used for information, but not to prove notability. You need a minimum of three solid sources to establish that your subject is notable, and then after that you can use other sources for uncontroversial info.
Going through your sources and looking specifically for sources to show notability, here's what I'm seeing:
  • we must forget about Kitamura's website and Twitter immediately, since they're not independent and can't show notability
  • anything with an interview is also not independent, which removes Polygon (source 1) and TouchArcade (source 3) from consideration
  • Sound Test (source 4) appears to be coverage of Kitamura's works, among others, and I'm not sure whether it would pass the significant coverage mark - reviewers may disagree on this one, but I'd be dubious about relying on this
  • IGN (source 6) is also dubious because two of the five paragraphs are direct quotes from Kitamura
  • GamesRadar (source 8) is also very short, with only two paragraphs on Kitamura, so I don't think this would pass significant coverage either
  • ScreenRant (source 9) is much more promising - it focuses on Kitamura, it's a reasonable length, and it looks to be independent. If you have more sources like this, that would help!
tl;dr: I don't think you're ready to submit just yet. Of course the reviewer may see things very differently to me, so if you think I'm being overly pessimistic then I encourage you to ignore me and have a go!
I hope this has been of some use to you - please feel free to ask follow-up questions or come back with more sources if you like. Happy editing! StartGrammarTime (talk) 22:46, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
I was thinking of WP:BLPSELFPUB for the interviews and website. My logic was that the independent sources established notability, while her website was just an easier and more direct way of sourcing information about her. There are other sources that confirm the statements I made about her (besides the Alex Roe thing), but I didn't want to overwhelm the article with citations to short articles that only confirm one statement. /home/gracen/ (yell at me here) 23:09, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
I do see your point, though. The article does overly rely on primary sources and would definitely benefit from some more independent coverage. /home/gracen/ (yell at me here) 23:10, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
The difficulty is that sources have to meet all three of the WP:42 criteria to show notability - so the source has to be independent and significant coverage and from a reliable publisher, and at the moment most of the independent ones fail significant coverage. I know this can be incredibly frustrating - my own drafts are languishing for want of good sources! - and it's not my intention to dissuade you, just to try to be realistic about the sourcing as I see it. You can absolutely keep all the current sources in, they give good information; I just don't think you have the minimum of three WP:42-compliant sources you need to establish that Kitamura is notable, and without those it doesn't matter how many sources you have, y'know? But again, I could be wrong! Reviewers all see things slightly differently, and I'm not a reviewer (yet). I've just spent a lot of time on the AfC helpdesk, seeing what gets declined and rejected versus what makes it through. StartGrammarTime (talk) 23:21, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. Don't worry about dissuading me, I totally understand where you're coming from. Do you have any recommendations for how to find better sources? I've been using https://news.google.com, but there aren't as many articles as I would hope and expect. I'm hopeful more sources will emerge as she does more freelance work (she barely even shows up in the credits for the game soundtracks despite being responsible for a lot of the work), and I worry that she just isn't notable enough at the moment to be on Wikipedia. I won't give up just yet, though. /home/gracen/ (yell at me here) 23:28, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
My only trick is to use WP:TWINKLE - if you don't already use it, I highly recommend it. One of the many wonderful things it does is give you an extra dropdown in the top right of your screen, marked TW. If you pretend you're going to delete the draft/article/whatever, by clicking 'XFD', it will offer you links to possible sources on Google. You may need to select 'AfD' instead of 'MfD' to get the full set of options. From memory, it's the basic search, news, new archives, books, scholar, and....some others I don't use. You can click those and it will send you to a search for the article name minus Wikipedia. Then just hit cancel on the XfD pop-up since you don't actually want to delete anything. It's quite surprising how often things show up in Scholar and Books that you wouldn't imagine would ever be mentioned.
But yeah, I think your worry may be well-founded - sorry. We have a whole essay called WP:TOOSOON about this very problem. Keep in mind that even if she's not notable now, she may well become notable, and you can keep the draft alive by making a small edit (even just adding a space) every six months. Sooner or later people will start noticing her - I think people are starting to notice now, really, but not in the numbers and print spaces we'd like. All I can say is keep an eye out, and I genuinely wish you the best of luck. I'm always happy to look at more sources if they pop up, and if you choose to submit the draft I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines :) StartGrammarTime (talk) 23:41, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Thanks a ton! I'll keep an eye out for more media coverage, but based on my research and what I've learned from this conversation you're likely right that this is too soon. I'm sure at least one other article will come out within the next six months, so hopefully the draft won't get G13'd. /home/gracen/ (yell at me here) 23:51, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
