Talkpages

Hi thatgirl, so it sounds like you're learning the ropes around here. :-)

As jax mentioned, wikipedia is not really like facebook -- chatting about stuff (besides improving the article in question) in the article-talkpages is frowned on, as off-topic.

On your own talkpage, this very page you are reading right now, you can of course chat to your heart's content. Other people can drop in and chat with you, too, like I'm doing. But if you just show up randomly on some person's talkpage that you don't already know (from editing together), then probably they'll just ignore you. The way to make friends is by helping them climb a mountain, and chatting about which slope to take on first. More on this in a moment. If you are looking for people to be friends with, the best place to start is the Teahouse... just click the link that Jax posted, and then you can click the new section button (at the top), and introduce yourself. In particular, say what you are trying to accomplish here. If your main goal is to make new friends, well, wikipedians are a pretty friendly bunch, so you can probably get that accomplished. But we're like a mountain-climbing-club, not like a party. We like challenges. Some folks are solo climbers, but plenty of folks are team climbers. Just find a mountain you think would be fun to climb (an article that obviously needs help), and start climbing (fixing it up). Your team will show up to help, sooner or later. You can alternatively find an article that is already being heavily edited, and join that team. I suggest staying away from articles about politics, religion, wars, abortion, bellbottoms, and other controversial topics, until you get the hang of editing 'normal' articles a little bit. No need for introductions -- just jump in and start fixing something you see needs improvement. People here often become friends, but in the context of improving wikipedia. Weird, eh?

Which leads me to this. Something tells me... just a wild guess... that you like music, and that you might want to improve articles about musicians, learn about the latest reliably sourced gossip in the music industry, and all that jazz. Or maybe, all that rock-n-roll. Country? Classical? Harpsichord concertos??? Or maybe you just love Tuvan throat singing, your username does not really tell me enough to figure it out.

Anyhoo, pick a topic, and then see if there's something that needs fixing. If you try to fix something in an article, and somebody deletes what you just did (gasp!) then please do not take it as an attack. It's actually an invitation to talk about the changes, over on the article talkpage. Yay! Here is the process: WP:BRD It's fun, when you get used to it. Like team-oriented mountain-climbing. When somebody deletes your stuff, usually they're trying to tell you something crucial -- like, that ledge is about to crumble, look out! Or maybe, hey I've climbed this before, the slope is easier to the west. But they'll talk with you about it, if they follow pillar number four.

If you want to tell the wikipedia world something about yourself, there is this thing called a userpage. Look up at the top, and see the userpage thing, with the red letters. Click it, and you should get a message like 'this page does not yet exist' and then... you get to create it. Fun. You can put mostly whatever you want on it... do *not* put stuff you copied from your favorite band's homepage on it though. Just stuff *you* personally wrote. Also, nothing illegal -- you should not offer Druggzz 4 SAAaallleee HHHhheeerrrreeee, right? Because you're damaging wikipedia, if you do. Here's the full load of bureacratic bullshit about userpage restrictions, in case you decide you need it. (Whoa... can I say that here?)

Which brings me to my next point. Sure, you *can* make a userpage. Plenty of people do. But it's not really The Thing around here. Anybody can have a facebook page, or a myspace page, or a friendster page, or a geocities page, or a page they *paid* somebody to make for them at www.ThatGirlWhoLovesMusic.com .... But who cares, right? Maybe your mom. Maybe your BFF. But in the big picture, none of that stuff is very impressive. Wikipedia mainspace, though... if you make edits to the articles in wikipedia, your contribution is forever.

Wikipedia has userpages, but they're usually not very impressive either. Some of us never even bother to make one, in fact. The point here is making articles the best they can be, not about making userpages the best they can be. Make sense? Not yet, maybe. But it will come to you. That said, userpages are tons of fun, and they are a good way to learn about editing, creating links, and so on. If making one appeals to you, go for it. Yes, I know you are against it, in real life. You mentioned it over on Moxy's page, which is why I brought it up. As I said in reply to you over on my own talkpage, I'm not really in the pro-bully club, and as far as I know, there is no such club, it was just a joke. Anyways, if you want to put the anti-cyberbully logo on your own talkpage, click edit, and look at the curly braces. Copy that stuff, and paste it into a page, any time you want the image to show up. You should prolly just use it on your *own* pages though. You cannot just go stick the anti-cyberbully logo into the Jello page, right? Because it is a page about Jello. There *is* also a page about cyberbullying on wikipedia. But if you look in that article, it only has facts. There are no opinions. But who put the facts in there? Folks like you and me, who wanted to make that article better. You can make a whole new section, if you are starting a new subject -- like, say, talking about Jello, which definitely is a new section. But to reply to me, just like I replied to you, click on the [Edit] thingee, which is right next to the section-title. So, if you want to reply to me, here, you would click the blue edit-thing, next to the big black questionmark, and then edit this section. Put your reply at the bottom, use two colons at the front of your reply, and then put four tildes at the end. Colon are next to the L-key. Tildes are next to the TAB-key. Ok, so this is Probably Dome But.... Do a lot of people know what the lovely, Delicious Jello is made of??? @ first, I thought. Wikipedia has an article on Jello. You could not put your comments there, right, because you have no source. Your cousin is *not* a reliable source, sorry. :-) Don't tell them I said that, it will crush their heartstrings like a ton of bricks. Search engine says:[1]

Hey, wikipedia is only number three? That's not right. Let's help fix that. We need to improve the wikipedia article, so we need a reliable source that says jello is made of ground-up animal bones.

Who is WP:RS here? Well, look at it another way. Who is no use to us? Answer.Yahoo.com , your cousin prolly posted that. ChaCha, same problem, anybody can post. TheUrbanShogun? No, sounds like a blog, not reliable.

That leaves Snopes, Wikipedia (woo!), PeopleForAnimalsIndia.org, and HowStuffWorks.

Snopes is prolly reliable, and lucky us, it was the first hit. So we can use that as a source. HowStuffWorks is usually reasonably reliable, so we'll use that too. The more sources the better. No posts from major journalists, or super important scientists, but that's probably okay. Two reasonably good sources is probably good enough.

What about that PeopleForAnimalsIndia.org ? Well... they *might* have good info. It depends on who *they* used for sources (New York Times? their 14-year-old cousin?) But look at their name: they are biased! They love animals, so they must hate jello, cause it's made of ground-up animals. Can we use them as a source anyway? Maybe... but only if we follow WP:NPOV. Got to be fair. Most people eat animals, after all. PeopleForAnimalsIndia does not deserve WP:UNDUE, which is more than their fair share. But we already have two good sources. So let's write our sentence we want to add to wikipedia.

We have two sources, right? So click on snopes, and click on how stuff works, and find out what they say. Oh, fine, I'm not lazy, I'll do it for us. Here we go:

JELL-O is made from[9] bones and hides. --snopes.com

Gelatin can come from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hides and connective tissues. Today, the gelatin in Jell-O is most likely[10] to come from pigskin. --howstuffworks.com

So we just pick which one we like best? *beeeep* Wrong answer. Cheating. Cannot just copy stuff. No plagiarism. Write your own sentence ...

... if you want it in wikipedia, then cite your sources.

But rather than just tell me about it, why don't you and I tell *everybody* about it? Or at least, everybody who reads the Jello article on wikipedia. Which might be hundreds, thousands, millions ... millions if I may say it again ... of people. If you want to do that, tell thousands or millions of people your cool factoid, a bit of work is required, which is what all that blah-blah stuff I was going on about sources was. Putting a new sentence into the parts of wikipedia meant for millions of people to see, certainly is a bit harder than chatting with a new friend. But both of them can be fun. So, let me put it in the form of a question. ThatGirl, guess what? I've got a cool sentence nearly ready to stick into the article on Jello. It says that Jello is made from the same stuff as footballs! So my question is, can you help me get it into the article, so that when people are making Jello, and they look up what it really is, they find out The Truth? (Please say yes :-) We can get it fixed up in ten minutes, I bet. Jello re-do

[I AM GOING TO DESCRIBE JELLO BETTER THIS TIME.]

Gelatin is made out of Cow hide, Animal bones, and more. Many people think they are boiled. Gelatin was created by Mary Wait and Rose knox. madehow.com indeed says that Gelatin, or "The Bones" before made into fun Jell-O is IN FACT boiled. Animal bones, skins, and tissue are obtained from slaughterhouses. Gelatin processing plants are usually located nearby so that these animal byproducts can be quickly processed.

Acids and alkalines such as caustic lime or sodium carbonate are used to extract minerals and bacteria from the animal parts. They are either produced in the food processing plant or purchased from outside vendors.

Sweeteners, flavorings, and colorings are added in the preparation of food gelatin. These can be in liquid or powdered forms and are purchased from outside vendors.
