Template:Derive

[edit]

You're ahead of me.

Someone must have invented Derive not knowing of the existence of Etymology (it was hardly well used). Etymology is much more general than Derive, as the discussion of it shows. But we should bring this up at a project if it was invented for the purpose: do you know which?

S.

Which project to notify I don't know, but from the transclusions it seems to be used nearly always for place names of Celtic origin, especially Irish. So maybe WP:SCOTLAND and WP:IRELAND? [edit: I see from the TfD that we had reached similar conclusions.]--eh bien mon prince (talk) 01:20, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Madibeng Municipality

[edit]

Hi Underlying Ik,

Thank you for your message on my page. I have the following comments on it:

Any information of the Madibeng Municipality is directly relevant to the town of Brits as it is the governing body thereof and thus affects the status and wellbeing of the town. I have added reliable sources to the piece of information I contributed there (the National Blue Drop report and a source from a website that confirms all information that I have published).

If you are otherwise opinionated or don't like the true and relevant information of ANC corruption, keep it to yourself and please refrain from sabotage. I will report it as such if you remove that information again. If you have ANY reliable and true proof that what I've added was untrue, please share with me.

Have a nice day,

Infoboxes and capitalisation

[edit]

Hi. I wonder if you could help change Infoboxes' titles to reduce unnecessary capitalisation. If you check the edit history of list of infoboxes you can see some examples of what I did so far. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:49, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Magioladitis. Yes I did see your edits, and I don't have anything against them, but I don't know if the effort required to move all those pages is commensurate to the result, especially as the pages using the wrong capitalisation tend to be little used ones which could end up being merged in the near future.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 17:58, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are some more things I work with that: All infoboxes should use lowercase parameters and if possible converted to use {{Infobox}} instead of html. Thanks for the great work on merging infoboxes. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:15, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Whinnies and neighs

[edit]

Hi there, I see you are doing template cleanup. If you add any more horse-related templates to your TfD list, can you kindly ping WT:EQUINE, as sometimes the editors who created the templates aren't always around these days, and we may have opinions on keeping or deleting (I spotted the two so far because I had user talk pages watchlisted for other things).. Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 18:15, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Montanabw:: I can ping you for any related TfDs if that's okay. But I'm baffled by your revert at Template:Infobox donkey: of course donkeys don't have wool, that's why the parameter was not implemented. What was the actual reason for reverting?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 18:27, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's not the best template, left out all the breed standard parameters; I'm no good at template syntax, but if the existing template is crappy, we'd do better to use Infobox horse breed as the basis and tweak only for donkey-specific stuff. Montanabw(talk) 18:35, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. The breed standards should now display correctly in the infobox, see the testcases. Using Template:Infobox horse breed as a basis, do you think it would yield better results? Can you provide a sample in the test cases?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 18:44, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, if you don't mind, could you also leave an edit summary when you edit? It might make it easier for others to understand what you are up to. The wholesale changes you are making have presumably been discussed somewhere; a link to that discussion might be welcome, and would give others the opportunity to contribute to it. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:51, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What changes are you talking about, exactly?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 19:53, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there's a fairly long list of ones without an edit summary here. But I meant the changes to the various domestic animal breed infoboxes. I don't mean to imply that the changes are necessarily good or bad, but I'd like to read the discussion, and perhaps contribute to it. Thanks for your note about {{Infobox horse test}}, that should definitely go; but I wouldn't mind trying to explain somewhere why I thought at the time that it might be necessary. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:24, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I add an edit summary when one is appropriate, in the case of edits to obscure infoboxes I think they are not. About the horse test template, I have already left you a link to the discussion on your talk page.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 20:36, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! But horse infoboxes are not "obscure" to us! (grin). And edit summaries are a common courtesy, (I'm told there should be one in nearly every edit) particularly where an infobox is in fairly wide use (and, given that JLAN works on donkey articles, the donkey one is apt to get even more use). JLAN played a major part in the design and improvement of several equine templates a few years back; he's pretty good at the syntax stuff (nod to JLAN) and so we aren't here to get on your case, we're just here to let you know that we care about this particular set of infoboxes and want to be sure that major changes don't foul up the work we are doing in the articles. And if there are syntax errors or something, we'd also like to discuss what you are doing so that any markup language issues are clear to all those who care. (I'm not one of those folks, I just care about the look of the end project!) Montanabw(talk) 02:42, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Infobox donkey has just 20 transclusion, so it's hardly highly visible stuff. Anyway, did you see the changes in the test cases? Is the new version acceptable to you?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 10:57, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Like I say, if you look at JLAN's List of donkey breeds, the infobox will be used more in the future. I'll look at the infobox and comment there. I will, however, also defer to JLAN on details as he's the one who did the original work and I'm not a syntax guru. Montanabw(talk) 18:57, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Islam in The Gambia

[edit]

hello,

for me, it's clear that Islam in The Gambia and Religion in The Gambia are two separate subjects, as there is plenty of material for expansion on both. The fact that the overwhelming majority of Gambians are Muslims doesn't mean that the two concepts should be conflated. At the Islam in The Gambia article isn't that bad, it's just tagbombed at present. --Soman (talk) 20:32, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They are two separate subjects, but for now they can be discussed on the same page given how small the pages are. When the religion article is expanded and there is enough material to sustain two articles, the redirecting can be undone. Agreed?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 20:47, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox Korean name

[edit]

Three new bugs:

  • When hanja is set to !, the hanja field should not be displayed; this is a special value used to automatically categorise the article into Category:Wikipedia articles needing hanja (the actual categorisation is handled by {{Infobox Korean name/categories}}, but the code which actually renders the infobox still needs to suppress the display of the field).
  • Also, it seems like the new font is too small, particularly for hanja; it's now back at the same small size that people were complaining about earlier (see Template talk:Infobox Korean name#Sizing in fonts and cells).
  • Finally, when the infobox is used as a submodule in "child" mode (for example in {{Infobox person}}, the "Korean name" header no longer shows; it only shows up for the other names (stagename, ja, ho, etc.). See Jeon No-min for an example.

Thanks, quant18 (talk) 05:41, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Additionally, the use of a nested table for the transcriptions creates a very sloppy effect, because the table cells do not necessarily align, and forcing the width of the table cells does not help because the size of the "Revised Romanization" label for the transcription is wider than the width that's being set. See Myung-hee for an example. quant18 (talk) 06:56, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Quant18! Thank you for letting me know of these problems, I will try to solve them as soon as I can.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 17:52, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
1. should have been solved now;
2. the font size has been changed back to 115% for both Hangul and Hanja;
3. actually that was intentional, because in some cases I think it would be preferrable to omit the header when the template is used as a module, but I restored its previous behaviour for now;
4. I checked the article, but both the names and the transcriptions seem to be properly aligned to me. Can you provide me some more examples of this issue? Thanks, eh bien mon prince (talk) 18:17, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

McCune–ReischauerExampe
Thanks for your quick response. Another recent example I came across was Hyun Jae-hyun. Here's a simple test case which breaks the alignment and demonstrates the underlying problem. This goes back to {{Infobox Chinese}} using a nested table for the transcriptions so that its "hide/show" button would work easily. Doesn't look like that feature is being used for either the Korean section of Infobox Chinese nor for Infobox Korean itself, so I think it shouldn't be a problem to eliminate the {{Infobox|subbox=yes}} in {{Infobox Chinese/Korean}} and just put the hangul & hanja labels as part of the same box as the others, right? quant18 (talk) 23:58, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, my mistake, it looks like that "hide the transcriptions" feature is actually used in {{Infobox Chinese}}. Not really sure how to fix this one, then ... quant18 (talk) 01:06, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've been looking for solutions to this problem, but from the documentation of the Infobox template this seems to be normal behaviour for subboxes. If that's how it is, we could change it to a child infobox, but that would lose us the option to collapse transcriptions.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 13:02, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I guess one possibility (kind of a hack) is for {{Infobox Chinese/Korean}} to have a parameter to decide whether it uses subbox=yes or child=yes for the transcriptions. Then {{Infobox Chinese}} could have the transcriptions infobox as a subbox with the width forced to 50% or whatever else is needed to make it align, while {{Infobox Korean name}} could have the transcriptions infobox as a "child" without any width set. quant18 (talk) 14:43, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to change it as you suggested, do you notice any difference in the testcases?--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:12, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hack

[edit]

could you fix the hack in Kang Youwei#Da Tongshu? it's a step forward, since it replaced a hard-coded table, but the hack-level is pretty high. Frietjes (talk) 23:11, 24 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to use a modular approach in replacing it, which is less hackish but also a lot longer. I don't know if this is an improvement, a table might have been a better solution since Infobox Chinese is meant for cases where there are many transliterations (or translations) of a single name, rather than for many names about a single subject. In any case, if you don't like the change, feel free to revert.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 12:10, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi William, thank you for the message. I think it's better to wait for a reply from the closing admin before trying DRV or other venues. Having said that, I don't really see a problem with the merger. If the 'jockey' parameter is not necessary for some articles, it can simply be left blank.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:50, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
UI, that's what I am doing- waiting patiently for the closing administrator to chime in. I informed all the TFD participants of the WP Horse racing's concerns as a courtesy. Whether the merged template goes through a DRV or the original TFD is reopened, I want all of you to know about it so you can take part if you so wish. I actually have no opinion(I work mostly on harness horse driver articles, not ones about horses) on the templates being debated. The reason I alerted everyone is because of the other WP editors who had concerns. Cheers!...William 17:29, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ottoman Empire in 1609

[edit]

Hi Underlying lk, Thanks for your frequent contributions to Ottoman Empire-related articles. But the map File:Ottoman Empire (1609).png which you have created in 2011 seems to be problematic. The map includes both the island Crete and Podolia which were not Ottoman territory in 1609 . (Crete was annexed in 1669 and Podolia in 1672.) On the other hand the map doesn't show Caucasus which was still nominally an Ottoman territory till the Treaty of Nasuh Pasha in 1612. Cheers. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 12:07, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nedim! About Crete, you are right and it should not be included as part of the Ottoman Empire in any of the 1609 maps. In fact, I had mistakenly uploaded a batch of maps with Crete included at first, but later overwrote them with a corrected version after I realised the mistake (compare [1] and [2]). Perhaps it is not immediately visible from the thumbnails since I used a cream colour for the Ottoman territories, but it should definitely be marked in white as with all other non-Ottoman regions.
About Podolia and the Caucasus, I made a deliberate choice to follow the directions of the source (The Encyclopedia of the Ottoman Empire by Agoston and Masters) as closely as possible, to avoid any kind of original research. Despite that, it's evident from any number of other sources that drawing an exact border for the early 17th century Ottoman Empire is always an arbitrary choice to some extent. I chose to follow Agoston and Masters because their map was one of the few to be consistent with a majority academic sources. I would avoid any correction to the original set of maps as that would make them less authoritative by allowing individual interpretations of the extent of the borders, but if you could find another map of the early eyalets based on an academic publication, it would be a nice addition since it would allow us to depict an alternative (but always scholarly) point of view. Cheers, eh bien mon prince (talk) 13:57, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox SSSI on cy

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for your work on the Template:SSSI adaption for Wales. We have a seperate issue on cy (Welsh language wiki), here, where the words "Shown within Wales" appear under the map, and I'm unable to translate it to "O fewn Cymru". Please can you help? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 07:43, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

HI Llywelyn, I linked the SSSi template to its en wiki equivalent and replaced "Shown within" with "O fewn", but that left the country name untranslated so I added a parser function to display the native name whenever the displaymap or aos parameters are set to "Wales". This workaround only applies to Wales, for other countries it will be still necessary to use the Welsh name directly in the infobox, so that displaymap for an English SSSI should be "Lloegr". I hope this helps. Cheers, eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:22, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re my revert, I specifically took photos of Kayamandi for that article because I felt the shack photo was a misrepresentation. I know the image quality of my photo is not great and I will take more photos with my new camera as soon as I know how to use it properly. I go to Kayamandi once a week. I am also planning to take a day trip to Pniel to take some photos. HelenOnline 13:56, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Helen, my judgement was based entirely on the superior technical quality of the other photo, but I don't know much about the area so I'll trust your decision. I'm glad to know that you'll be taking some new photos, I created this project page to keep track of how many articles are still missing images and unfortunately there's still so many of them. So I support your idea for a photo trip 100%! Cheers,--eh bien mon prince (talk) 21:48, 5 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We should really have some kind of drive to fill that gallery. I am ok with travelling within about a 50km radius from where I live (Stellenbosch). If everybody did that, I am sure we could do a lot better. HelenOnline 07:10, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:BANCO DE INTERCAMBIO REGIONAL.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:BANCO DE INTERCAMBIO REGIONAL.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Too big a map displayed at SA towns/suburbs

[edit]

Hi Prins, can you please include a 2nd level place map to Template:Infobox South African town 2011 that refers closer to a place, eg. Gauteng map instead of South Africa map for the suburb Lynnwood Manor in Pretoria. It really looks pathetic, pinned to a large SA map! Dankie Aliwal2012 (talk) 19:17, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Aliwal, I uploaded a new OpenStreet map for the Pretoria region and added it as a new location map to the Infobox SAt, you can see a testcase for Lynnwood Manor here. I'm not very satisfied with the result though, the captions on the map are unreadable and there is no way to expand it and still display the dot showing the position. I'll let you decide if this is an improvement or not. Cheers, eh bien mon prince (talk) 10:17, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I got cracking with all towns on af:wiki. I replaced map of SOUTH AFRICA with PROVINCE in the sjabloon & it worked fine, ta! Aliwal2012 (talk) 19:33, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
True, but now the nationwide map is not displayed at all, though an Afrikaans-speaking audience can perhaps be expected to be already familiar with the location of the provinces.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 20:15, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring on Turkey

[edit]

Hi Underlying lk, please be careful of edit warring. You violated the three revert rule on Turkey, I'm not blocking you in good faith and because you stopped. Please be more careful in the future. Thanks, Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 10:31, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Callanecc, I did not perform more than three reverts, the fourth revert was made by an uninvolved editor rather than by me. What's more, is that my edits were the result of days of talk-page discussion and had the support of other users like EtienneDolet, DeCausa and KazekageTR, while Lord of Rivendell's changes had no support, other than his own.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 12:52, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
1, 2, 3, 4. Even though it's different content it still counts as a revert (although that did count in your favour re blocking, as did that you were acting from the consensus version. But it's still generally better to wait for admin action or someone else than crossing the magic line. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 12:56, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The first diff is not a revert, if you take that from the edit summary "reviewing recent changes", that was because I was comparing the current revision with a months-old stable version (and adding back deleted maintenance tags, among others), and I did not revert any changes made by Lord of Rivendell before that point.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 13:04, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It was a revert because it was undoing other editors' actions (per WP:3RR), that is the editors who deleted the tags. However I didn't believe it was blockable and still don't. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 13:16, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox pig breed

[edit]

Hi! On 1 October last year you appear to have broken {{Infobox pig breed}}, I think with this edit, where it seems you changed the parameters of the template without updating the documentation to match (or without updating them to match the documentation). There's a discussion higher up this page where I asked you where you had gained consensus for your changes; I don't see that I got any reply. I asked Pigsonthewing to take a look at this, since I know he is competent in this area, but he seems to be busy with other stuff. Can you fix it, or do I need to ask a template expert? I put something in the sandbox that appears to work, but this is not my field so I am hesitant to roll it out. Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:25, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Justlettersandnumbers: first of all you should provide me an example of what you mean by broken. Parameters not showing up? Error messages? If so, give me the link to the relevant articles, otherwise I cannot help you.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 22:30, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, stuff not showing up. See User talk:Pigsonthewing#Infobox pig breed. Or just look at the template, where the parameters you added with your edit do not match those called for by the documentation. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:38, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Justlettersandnumbers: About your unanswered query, I finally found the message you referred to, and from the tone of the message it wasn't obvious that you expected a reply: posting a snotty message to someone's talk page is not likely to get you a timely reply (or maybe that's just how you habitually address other editors). About the issue I caused, I apologise for it, and I think it's fixed now. Cheers,--eh bien mon prince (talk) 22:51, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia conventions

[edit]

Hi. Your modification, where you move specific content to the specific page is a good contribution. It helps to make things clear. Your modification, where you change the date format on a page bearing the "Use dmy dates" template is not appropriate. 144.85.169.55 (talk) 17:10, 13 February 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Language and formats

[edit]

hi, number formats, currencies and language are not connected. the english wikipedia has different formats for sizes, depending on the country (american footballers from the u.s. in inches and foot, european footballers in m, cm). the same in the german wikipedia. if some template cannot deal with international formats, the template should be fixed. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 04:31, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@ThurnerRupert: Units of measurement or currencies don't depend on the language, but number formats certainly do, ("Typically, English-speaking countries employ commas as the delimiter and other European countries employ periods or spaces", from the article Decimal mark) and that is reflected in our manual of style about numbers.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 04:40, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

eh bien mon prince, in switzerland the official language is french, german, italian, rumantsch. additionally english is used sometimes as "lingua franca". but there is a national keyboard, and a number format of course. i know that english native speakers seem to have difficulties to understand this because they face the problem so rarely. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 04:56, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I know all that, but this is the English-language Wikipedia, which is why we follow English-language conventions when it comes to number formats.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 05:02, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
i guess we have a conflict then here. you think it is an english language convention, while i think this is a convention of a country. the manual of style btw is perfect for switzerland, as it allows everything but . as thousands separator. so i could say bon pour moi, fuck the EU ;) you have the right to change the template to allow ' so it allows what is written in the style guide? --ThurnerRupert (talk) 05:11, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a matter of personal opinion, where numbers are used in English-language contexts groups of thousands are separated by a comma, you're free to ask at the help desk if you don't believe me, but if you persevere in your stubborn belief don't be surprised if you receive unwanted attention from the admins.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 05:33, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
you are right, as it is not a matter of personal opinion we have the manual of style. if you want to disallow the ' as thousand separator, please let it go into there. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 10:36, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You won't admit you were wrong even after three uninvolved editors reverted the same change, so I don't think there is much to be gained from discussing the matter further.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 13:40, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of infoboxes

[edit]

To belatedly answer your queston at TfD: much better now, thank you. I now plan to try to merge or have deleted some of the redundant templates. for example... Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:23, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is still plenty of scope for mergers when it comes to sport infoboxes, in a way it's a similar situation to what it was for geography articles before Infobox settlement became standard. Ideally, we should have similarly versatile infoboxes for sports teams, leagues, seasons, because the current multipurpose templates are not always credible as replacements.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 18:45, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox court case 2 has been nominated for merging with Template:Infobox court case 2. [edit]

looks like we had similar plans. I would like to see a few parameters added to 'infobox mountain', but after that, I think we can switch this to a wrapper. in particular, |isolation= for topographic isolation, |rock= for the composition, and possibly |access=, |normal_route=, and |remarks= or |footnotes=. the additional images can probably be simply migrated to the articles. will start a thread at template talk:infobox mountain. ⚠

Thanks for uploading File:City of Cape Town CoA.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:17, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wish you had discussed this matter before nominating the template for deletion. There is no reason for this endeavour, nor have you provided any justification. Politeness would've been preferred, and politeness would've entailed discussion. RGloucester 04:07, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

And a TfD is not a discussion? What exactly is the problem?—eh bien mon prince (talk) 04:08, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is preferable to open a talk page discussion first, is it not? Rather than to go into procedural matters head first? RGloucester 04:09, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't think this is the case, either as a matter of policy or even common practice. TfD is the place for discussing deletions, anywhere else would have not been appropriate, since decisions to keep or delete a template cannot be reached anywhere else.—eh bien mon prince (talk) 04:12, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is a courtesy, to sort matters out on the talk page, and if they cannot, to resort to AfD. The modern era lacks in this regard, I suppose, but politeness will always be paramount. RGloucester 04:19, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I hear you, but it is equally a matter of politeness to let the whole community have its say on the matter. You have been properly notified of the discussion so I don't believe you should be decrying a lack of manners in this case.—eh bien mon prince (talk) 04:23, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I beg of you not to put forth information without having further researched the situation. It is detrimental to the preservation of truth, as you will see in my reply at the deletion discussion. RGloucester 23:14, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
When you want to draw someone's attention to your messages it can be enough to use {{ping}} as in this example: @RGloucester:. This way we won't be having two parallel conversation about the same topic. Cheers,--eh bien mon prince (talk) 23:20, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox US infantry

[edit]

I agree that {{Infobox US infantry}} is not an infobox.

Generally, non-infobox templates should, I think be renamed, perhaps to 'Template:Sidebar US infantry'. Meanwhile, anything called "Infobox..." shoudl be kept in the list, in a section I've just created, Sidebars, so that we don't loose track of them.

Specifically, that seems more like a succession box, and is redundant to our succession templates, so I'm sending it to TfD. If kept, it might be absorbed into the infobox used on the same pages, either directly, or as a module.

Cheers, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:39, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you check the history page you'll see that I had moved the template to 'US infantry sidebar' months ago, so there's no reason to keep it in the list.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 11:55, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but since 'Template:Sidebar US infantry' remains as a redirect 9and is used as such), it's likely that, if we don't list it in a separate section, someone will notice that it is "missing" and restore it to the list of real infoboxes. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:07, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By that logic you should add every redirect with the 'Infobox' prefix to the list, and I don't think that is a practical idea.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:17, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Only those which redirect to a non-Infobox template, I suggest. perhaps on a separate page? Or even using a hidden category? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:53, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox Chinese/Korean

[edit]

made a minor change for Gwanghwamun Plaza. I was thinking we could add rowclassX = mergedrow as well, which would get rid of the horizontal rules, but I don't know if this would screw up any other uses. also, might disable the background colouring for the header when it is a child? Frietjes (talk) 16:46, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Frietjes: Hi, I agree that it would be better to get rid of those lines, but given that they originate from {{Infobox urban feature}} it might be better to change that template instead, not least considering that it's much less used than IB Chinese/Korean. About background colours, disabling them when it is used as a child template would be an improvement, to do that it should be enough to sandwich the headerstyle between {{#if: {{{child|}}} etc.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 17:22, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
the lines come from class=geography (same as infobox settlement and others). the class is then inherited by the child infobox, since the child has no idea about its parent, you can't fix it without either (a) adding mergedrow classes to the child box, or (b) change the class used by the parent. I don't know if mergedrow has any detrimental effects when class is not set to geography by the parent. Frietjes (talk) 17:26, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Frietjes: My idea was (b); I don't know if changing the class of the child template will have unwanted effects either, but I wouldn't risk breaking a template with 7,000+ transclusions to fix a single instance of a template with 24.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 17:33, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
certainly possible, for (a) see Template:Infobox Chinese/Korean/sandbox. Frietjes (talk) 17:38, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox college ski team

[edit]

Hi User:Underlying lk, was just looking to discuss why this template is proposed for deletion. A lot of distinct sports have their own infobox template[1], and saying this one is redundant to the Template:Infobox sports team is to say that all of those templates are also redundant. Please also see the discussion you started, Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:Infobox college ski team, not sure how much knowledge you have on alpine ski racing but it largely differs from traditional American sports. Thanks for the notice and consideration - D.baugher5 (talk) 04:08, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi D, actually you are correct, there are too many infoboxes for sports, many of them redundant to a more generic template, and we are currently trying to merge some of them. This is also the case for Infobox college ski team.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:33, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Underlying lk: But that's just the predicament. The general sports template as it stands now does not have many of the parameters/fields that a ski team requires, and thus many of the parameters that are required for that template will just show up empty on the article page. If it would please you, it could become a general ski team infobox template, but I think Wikipedia is best suited with this template in its quiver. I intend to make a lot of pages for college/club/professional ski teams and this would be incredibly useful. - D.baugher5 (talk) 22:05, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If there are important parameters which are missing from Infobox sports team they can be added as part of normal editing, but you shouldn't try to stuff in every parameter you think could be useful: the point of infoboxes is to summarise a handful of key facts. I would advise that you read WP:IBT, the relevant guideline which includes a number of design principles and other suggestions on the topic.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 22:23, 26 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Underlying lk: I've come around to see the merits in your deletion, but I'd still like to include this infobox in my article. Can you offer me a link to documentation on adding infoboxes to main articles w/o going through a template? Much appreciated. Drew Baugher talk 15:06, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's not much of an alternative, because then you would have to create a new single-use infobox for every article about a college ski team, and more in general the use of templates like {{Infobox}} in article space is strongly discouraged.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 16:16, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Template Infobox Indian TV Actor

[edit]

Sir, First of all hello. I'm Rajan. Sir i saw that you kept this template for deletion. Let me clarify, sir Indian shows has lots of awards. And that template has meaningful modules. The awards like Zee Gold Awards, Star Parivaar Awards or Zee Rishtey Awards are included in it. The actors like Ronit Roy, Karanvir Bohra are such respective recipients of this awards. So do designing a template infobox for an Indian Television actor is a wrong thing? Sir, and one more thing, Chinese actors do have their templates and why don't other take objections? Please sir accept this template will be highly obliged. R★S★S (Your Precious Reply) 06:12, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your intention, but if you look at biographies of actors (say, George Clooney) you will notice that most do not have lists of awards in the infoboxes, since the list could rapidly become overly long, especially for very successful actors. If you want to list the awards, it is better to use something like a table or Template:Infobox actor awards.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 10:37, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(Infobox) region history

[edit]

I'm puzzled... How is this not an infobox? Regards, Sardanaphalus (talk) 09:28, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:IBT explains it: "an infobox template is a panel [...] that summarizes key features of the page's subject", while Template:Region history sidebar is just a navigation aid, and instead of summarising facts about the article it shows the same content across different pages for the purpose of linking them.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 10:45, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Fushan007: template colours are not supposed to match the rest of the article, and in general the use of decorative colouring should be avoided; see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#Style, color and formatting.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 22:26, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

St Lucia

[edit]

Hi Underlying lk. You created St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal in February 2012. In March 2012, editor Forafrica created a page called "The Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park", which presently is St Lucia Estuary. However both this article and yours are about St Lucia, the town. Yours, though shorter, is of course the more wikified of the two. I wonder wether there is anything useful that could be salvaged from St Lucia Estuary to be incorporeated into yours. I don't know what the source of the information is, but there is no such thing as "Rio de la Medaos do Oura" in Portuguese. Regards, Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 10:07, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Rui Gabriel Correia: Hi, I merged the two article since, as you correctly pointed out, they refer to the same locality. I found a print source for "Rio de la Medaos do Oura", which seems to be an archaic name given to the area by survivors of the São Bento.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 07:09, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox South African town addition

[edit]

Hi Underlying lk, I would really like to add additional inforamation to that infobox but due to its current format I can not. Information such as GDP per capita and GDP for example. Since I am not very confident in building templates and infoboxes and dont want to break this one I would like to know if you could possibly make a few addditons? My I suggest that Template:Infobox South African town have a field in to that Infobox settlement has named:

|blank_name_sec1 =
|blank_info_sec1 =
|blank_name_sec2 =
|blank_info_sec2 =

In the mean time I will add this info I want to add in a generic infobox under the main one on the Cape Town, JHB and Pretoria pages.

Dealing with copyvios

[edit]

Hi! I've just come across I'm Not Black, I'm Coloured, where you identified a possible copyright problem in August - thank you! Just a note for the future: if you blank a page with the copyvio template, could you please then follow the instructions on it, which are to list it at WP:CP and to notify the contributor? Because if you don't do those things it may not get dealt with. Many thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:39, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

French Republican Calendar

[edit]

Thanks for uploading those 12 images of the allegorical figures for the months of the French Republican calendar ... they are beauties! I'd like to add them the enWP article about the calendar. Would you mind if I cropped a few pixels of boundary from a few of the originals to make them all the same height? Most are 650px high, but there are a few from 653px to 659px high. I'd planning to set them up in a grid, scaled down by the browser, with text below, and they don't quite line up ... Alternatively, I could make a new set of reduced size copies (something around 220px wide would work well). What do you think? Scarabocchio (talk) 18:56, 18 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Scarabocchio: I don't mind it, but I think it can be done without having to modify the pictures one by one. See the example below, they seem to align quite well:

Please help getting a map into Commons

[edit]

Hi Underlying lk. You helped tweak a number of photos on my fisrt attempt at loading something up to the Commons. Could you be of assistance again? I would like to have this map, so I can use on the various rivers of Angola. I have written to the copyright holder seeking permission and here is the reply:

  • "Hi Rui,
  • Yes, you can use the map in Wikipedia, but remember to place back the link that point back to the page you coped that from which is http://www.ezilon.com/maps/africa/angola-road-maps.html
  • Can you send us the exact link you placed it?, so that we can file it, since we are cracking down now on those that infringe on our copyright. This will help to keep our attorney away from your project.
  • Looking forward to your reply.
  • from, Ralph"

Is this sufficient? Best regards, Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 11:23, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Underlying lk, While seeing Koppen maps, I saw your very nice work for Iran, Iran Koppen map. Thanks for creating the Iran Koppen map from Asia map. Would you please consider doing similarly for India from Asia . I tried adding India Koppen map to India article in Wikipedia & it was suggested to get a clearer picture (https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=India&diff=683775491&oldid=683762520). May be with only India in the map & others removed (like Iran's map created from Asia), there is a chance for India Koppen map to be added to India Wikipedia article. A map legend attached onto the map body with descriptions for only the major 7 climates zones for India, would be a great addition too.(It is in the summary part of the image file here). Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Photo of Jumana Michael Hanna for the 2003 Washington Post article.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Photo of Jumana Michael Hanna for the 2003 Washington Post article.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Rrburke (talk) 12:29, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Antonresume.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Antonresume.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:27, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The use of your template in Kiwi.com results in the wikipedia article annual report being cited as the source for the company's net income. Could you have a look at the problem please?
