Category:Entertainers who died in their 20's

Lived categories

Wknight, I noticed you replace birth and death categories with the {{lived|b=1938|d=1982|key=Buono, Victor}} template. However, this causes a slowdown of the servers. Instead use {{Subst:lived|b=1938|d=1982|key=Buono, Victor}}. This substitutes the normal birth and death categories you were getting rid of, but which are prefered. Mexican and Japanese baseball players

Regarding your question on the categories:

I intended those two categories to be for players native to the two countries. I didn't intend for the Japanese players category to be populated by non-Japanese. I suggest that non-Japanese players in Japan be placed in a separate category—perhaps "Non-Japanese baseball players in Japan". There's precedent for it; there's a category for non-German football players in Germany. — Dale Arnett 03:18, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

These are both important employers in Largo, but I'm not sure the links need to be in the article. Mr. Thomas, the founder of Pinch a Penney, is a very important player in Largo politics. We owe him a lot for the new library. Putting my personal/political bias aside, his link should go.

Comma before LoPbN dates?

Hi, and thanks for your contribs on List of people by name-tree pages!

You may be interested something that's been diffidently discussed for over a year, but hasn't gotten any attention since i asked for opinions on resolving it about 6 months ago. I've put a lot of commas between the link to the subject's bio and their parenthesized dates of birth &/or death, since that has been the predominant approach for a long time, but my cautiousness about a change has been the strongest opinion for it that i've heard for a while before, and since then.

Earlier this week, i announced my intention to eliminate the comma before (but not the one after) the dates, come the new year; that too has brought no response.

Your interest in the pages suggests you're among those whose continued silence should justify my confidence in that move, so i hope you'll speak up at Talk:List of people by name#Commas if you've got enough of an opinion to bother commenting on it.

Names for Olympics by country categories

Hi. I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this but, when broken out by country, most sports- and people-related categories begin with the nationality first. You'll see one of the exceptions in Category:American sportspeople is the subcategory Category:Olympic competitors for the United States — most of the rest start with Category:American... Has anyone brought up the idea of renaming, e.g., Category:Olympic tennis players of the United States to Category:American Olympic tennis players? I'm figuring it's been discussed but put off as a monstrous item on a to-do list somewhere. :) wknight94 01:14, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, you have just stumbled onto a surprisingly controversial and complex corner of category space. The two rival camps - the "Fooian bars" supporters and the "Bars of Foo" boosters have had several debates about this issue. I think things have been relatively quiet on that front for a while now, though, and we are lucky that this time, the conclusion was well-documented - see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories). Most of the people-related categories have indeed been decided to take "Fooian bar" form, though it appears this policy has (shockingly enough) not been applied to say, the Democratic Republic of the Congo-ians, and others with tongue-twisting English names. (There was actually some controversy about whether or not this should apply to the United States, because some people said "American" could mean "anyone from North or South America", but I guess that has been settled, too.) This would indicate your suggestion should be implemented...except that there was another decision about the Olympics categories. There was some concern that it be made clear exactly who qualified to be in them. It was decided that the categories would include only athle-- excuse me, sportspeople (in UK english, "athletes" means "track and field athletes") who had actually competed, not those with mere aspirations, or team membership, etc. So there was a conversation about what the term should be - "Olympians", "Olympic athletes", "Olympic sportspeople", "competitors from" vs. "competitors for", etc. "Olympic competitors for" was the result. I guess the subcategories are similarly patterned for consistency, but hey. If you ask me, a better solution to the inconsistency would be to convert all the "American foo" categories to "Foo of the United States", but I doubt that would happen if put to a vote. It's up to you if you want to propose a change. If so, the best thing to do would probably be to look up the Olympics convention discussion (it's somewhere in the WP:CFD archive, probably just before the historical era during which you'll see some edits renaming those categories) and put a link in your proposal, so people can refer back to it. Then, look at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories). If you decide you simply need to rename some categories to conform to the existing convention, then you can post a nomination on Wikipedia:Categories for deletion (which handles renaming, too). If you want to add a new convention (say, about Olympics) and rename some categories to conform to it, I would post your nomination on WP:CFD, mention that you would like to amend this policy, and also drop a note on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (categories) pointing people from there to the WP:CFD discussion (so no one watching that page can complain that they weren't notified). We have bots that can do mass renaming, so don't worry if you want to rename a large number of categories. Category:Schenectady County, New York

I've never seen editors add people to county or city categories. Usually city or county articles have a "notable residents" list to cover the situation. Isn't that sufficient? It's hard to see how Bernard Vonnegut is significant to Schenectady County. If he was a local politician it might be different. I'm in the process of grouping everything together under that category in preparation for creating subcategories under there. One of them will be a Category:Schenectadians category just like there is a Category:Tampans and various other cities. I don't even know who Bernard Vonnegut is but it sounds like he's only in Wikipedia at all because of some invention he came up with — while he was working at G.E. in Sch'dy. That invention is what's listed in the first paragraph of his article. I would think that would have been big news to Schenectady at the time. To me, if he belongs in any geographic category, it would be Schenectady and Indianapolis. Take a look at Category:Tampans — it has people that were born there, people that are there now, people that became famous there, etc. How is that different than for a future Category:Schenectadians? wknight94 13:32, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds good. There are many "geographic people" categories. I believe the tendency is to avoid adjectives like "Schenectadians" or "Tampans" in favor of phrases like "People of Schenectady" or "People from Tampa". Keep up the good work. Cheers, -Willmcw 23:19, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My reasons for opposing categorizing people by county are numerous, but suffice to say for now, this is how I'd prefer such relationships to be documented on here–with full annotations explaining the topical intersection. Hi, in your comment your said you find some useless, I assume that means you only want to keep the prematurely deceased cat? Photos

Litigation from whom? Litigation can only from the copyright holder, and I have written permission from the copyright holder to use the photo. This is a feeble line of argument.
If there is a bot that deletes photos which have legitimate copyright info, then the bot needs to be fixed, not my documentation. Since you seem to think this important, I suggest you do so.

I'm sure you mean well, but please do a little more research before advising people on these things - the images in this case were plainly not public domain (as could've been seen if you'd read any of the copyright information on any of the images, or Adam's own user page), and thus advising people to tag them as public domain is a very bad idea. Nastiness

I apologise for being nasty. The reason is that I am sick of endless, random deletions and challenges over images which are being used with the explicit written permission of the copyright holder, and which are tagged very clearly with a formulation approved by Mr Wales, who invented this policy in the first place. I am sick of this policy being randomly and inconsistently applied by self-appointed busybodies who apparently have nothing better to do here than sabotage other people's work and drive away contributors. Apparently I will now have to retag a large number of photos, some for the 3rd and 4th time, because someone has invented a bot which deletes photos that do not carry a copyright template. I have jumped through every hoop demanded of me since this issue arose, but every time I do, new hoops are invented. Baseball on Wikicities

Hello Wknight94, Googie Man here and I want to ask you something as a fellow baseball fan on Wikipedia. Jimbo and Angela have made a new webstie called Wikicities. This link in particular will take you to the baseball Wikicity. As you'll see it's similar to Wikipedia, but my hope is this will allow baseball fans to do more and different things, like reporting on games, in depth statistics, create mulitple pages for pictures, and whatever else baseball fans care to create. You've done great work on Wikipedia and I was hoping you could help get this baseball Wikicity off the ground. Baseball on Wikicities, part II

Hi Wknight, Thanks for your reply. Here is a link to the Wikicities homepage [1], so you can learn more about the project. The difference between Wikicities and Wikipedia? More freedom on Wikicities. Wikipedia is a great resource, but all content must conform to the standards of an encyclopedia. This means no opinion, no speculation, no predictions. My hope is that Wikicities will be a forum for all these things that baseball fans love to do. I also hope that people can start reporting on baseball news, or write up a game they saw the previous night. One thing I personally want to do, and get other baseball fans to join in, is to have a section of Wikicities devoted to pictures taken at games. I think there are many more possibilities I haven't even thought of, so any suggestions you have are very welcome. I hope to see you there at the Baseball Wikicity [2]. Thanks! World Series

If there are other blurbs in the article which claim to be "Best Series Ever", feel free to remove that reference or else say "ONE OF the best". It is almost totally a point-of-view concept. I'm sure young White Sox fans think 2005 was the best ever! The term "best ever" would likely have to be narrowed to Series' that went the full distance, which narrows the list significantly, and where the outcome of the game was in serious doubt until the final play, which narrows the list further. Then you've got a short "list of the best". After that, there are likely no objective criteria for determining "THE best". You could make a statistical argument, but that wouldn't be the whole picture. And I could just as easily argue for 1912 as for 1991, although I am not quite old enough to have seen 1912. d:) Wahkeenah 03:40, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You could go a step further, and reduce EACH Series entry to a single line, in that fashion, retaining the link to the Series writeup. That would reduce the page to a simple quick reference of results, along with a "headline" to trigger the reader's memory and/or interest in possibly going to the individual detail pages. I also have second thoughts about any of it being in the present tense, as the wording gets a bit awkward, but consistency is the key: either all past (preferable) or all present tense. Arguably, there also needs to be a page for each of the pre-1900 Series, which generated some interest in their time... at least as much as the 1908 Series, which generated almost none, as it followed heart-pounding races in both leagues. If Cubs fans knew that it would be their last Series win for at least 97 years, maybe more of them would have caught some trains to Detroit to catch the action. Vandalism

Hi! Thanks for your note re dealing with vandals. I've been wondering: Is it customary / recommended to post a warning message for every vandalism? So far I have posted it for repeated vandalisms only. If some kid adds "boobs" to a couple of pages I haven't bothered - often they seem to try it once or twice, notice the change gets reverted, then they give up. I'm concerned about causing more harm than good if I attach a warning to every AOL or school library IP address in the universe... Also feedback might encourage someone; if their changes promptly and quietly disappear some of them might lose interest more quickly. I've been trying delete first, warn only if the behaviour persists.

Since you almost immediately moved the last post I made to your talk page, let me start by pointing out that deleting posts to your talk page is frowned upon.

I'm posting about your refusal to honor my request that you delete the comments you have made about me on your user page. If the comments were somewhere else, I would just post a reply defending myself since you have refused to remove them, but since they are on your user page, it is against Wikipedia convention for me to make any major edits there. So instead, I am left with requesting that you delete the comments. By this, I mean delete any reference to me on your user page of any kind. I am requesting complete removal of any reference to me, because your previous changes simply changed the entry from an insinuation that I would engage in sock puppeting, to a kind of passive accusation that I am somehow stalking you via AfD.
