Board Games pre-response
Hi, Xx, if you will allow the informality. I'll respond to your actual note on the article talk page, but I wanted to let you know that if you wish to alert an editor that they're being name-checked on a talk page (not their own, of course), you should use the {{ping}} template, like this: {{ping|Phil wink}}
. The editor will then be notified that someone is referencing them, or addressing them, in a discussion. Also, remember to sign your talk page posts with 4 tildes (~~~~
). Cheers. Phil wink (talk) 20:07, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Phil, thanks for the tip! I'm relatively new to Wikipedia in that this is my first attempt at doing anything anyway substantial, so am not quite familiar with the correct modes of communication yet, so thanks for the tip! I'll use {{ping}} in future. Just out of interest, what is the difference between the two? Thanks. Xx78900 (talk) 22:49, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
- No prob. Not sure which two you're talking about... if you mean the 2 examples I gave above, then the first (that starts with "{{tl|" in the source, and which you reproduced in your response) is just a convenient way to link to the template in text without actually using the template. The second (which uses "code" and "nowiki" markup in angle brackets) is a way to show the full literal text that I wanted to convey to you in the displayed text, again without actually invoking the template... that is, I'm typing out the full text necessary to use the template, but then telling Wikipedia only to display it, not to actually perform it. On the other hand, if you're talking about the link you originally used, versus the example I gave above, then the difference is that the link you used was just that: a link to my user page. Whereas the "ping" template will actually give me a little alert, letting me know that someone is talking about, or to, me (the "ping" template also does provide a link to my user page, but that's just sort of a secondary extra). Now, you certainly don't have to use this, particularly if you have reason to believe that the editor you want to alert is already watching the page, and you certainly wouldn't use it on the editor's own personal talk page because, well, obviously that message is for them, that's why you put it there. But I find it very useful if, for example, I'd like to bring someone new into a conversation.
- Yeah, I could see you were new because I checked out your stats -- doesn't always mean a lot, but it can give you an idea of who you're dealing with before you type. If you have questions or encounter problems here, I'm happy to try to address them. I'm now editing somewhat sporadically, but if you ping me or edit my talk page, I'll notice. The number of subtle expectations that you're supposed to comply with here would ... well, they would fill Wikipedia. And, by and large, most of them are at least somewhat sensible. But being new, you're going to make mistakes -- if you don't, you're not trying hard enough. Some of us you'll run into will be turd sandwiches, but I think the majority are still just righteous nerds trying to share knowledge; I'm somewhere in the middle. So I hope you enjoy your time here.
- And a couple of observations on board games: I really hope you have the energy to keep at it, because Wikipedia coverage of, well especially traditional board games, is tiny islands of excellence in vast oceans of ... not-excellence. But let me express my prejudices as a cynical old Wikipedian, looking at your latest edits. My first concern is for balance: it would actually be better (in my opinion) to have no section on European history at all, than to have one that implies that the history of board games in Europe is Hnefatafl, Ficheall, and Kriegsspiel -- that's just too weirdly random. Now, this is not at all a fair criticism of your work, because you're not done yet, and you've very clearly conveyed this by placing that template in the section. But this is still what's in my mind: is this editor really going to fill this out sensibly, or will we be left with yet another random list? Secondly, I'm rather surprised by the early dates you've referenced, so (if I'm being responsible) I'll probably have to double-check those sources to see if they're any good, and if they really claim that. (And if a claim for a date is probably wrong, as I'm assuming is implied by "anachronism", then why are we reporting it? In an already-detailed treatment of Ficheall that includes sound dates by contrast, sure ... in an overview of board games in general? no way!). Please understand, my goal is not to discourage you; quite the opposite. But I do want you to get a sense of some of the types of expectations that your new collaborators may have. Cheers. Church of St Peter, Carrigrohane
Hi, great to see another editor with an interest in Cork. I thought Ceoil and I were the only ones! The Church of St Peter could really do with a better image if you ever find yourself in that direction. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 17:23, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hello there @KJP1:. As it happens, I live quite nearby! The weather isn't great for the next week, but as soon as it clears up I'll take a few photos. Nice to meet you :) Xx78900 (talk) 20:08, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- That would be fantastic! Burges’s Cork endeavours are his only major works that I’ve never seen. And you have all three on your doorstep. I really must make a trip. Until then, some nice photos of St Peter’s will suffice! KJP1 (talk) 20:37, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- I snapped a few shots today, which I've added to the WikiData entry, see what you make of them! All the best, Xx78900 (talk) 12:11, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
- Fantastic! What a great building it is, and the images show this off very well. I am super jealous that I’ve not yet been able to see if myself. Can you get inside? KJP1 (talk) 15:54, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- I should be able to in due course, but the small slip of paper visible on the door says that the tower is undergoing restoration at present, and the church will be closed until they complete restorative works. They didn't indicate when they might be finished, but that they began in mid September. I'll shoot the interior when it does reopen. Xx78900 (talk) 16:51, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- That would be excellent. I really must do a bit more work on this article. To start, it must be mentioned in the Cork Pevsner, so I should certainly add that. Many thanks again. KJP1 (talk) 17:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Dúchas School's Collection as a reliable source
Hiya. According to the about page on the Dúchas Schools' Collection (and the related about page on the National Folklore Collection), the collection includes several hundred thousand pages of primary school pupils' original exercise books, compiled from 5,000 Irish primary schools between 1937 and 1939. A (granted nicely bound and well presented and centralised) kids school project. While perhaps their teachers reviewed the homework/submissions, I'm not sure work by primary school kids meets the editorial or review levels expected to meet WP:RS. Certainly I'd be intrigued to know, in 90 years, if someone was using my homework as an encyclopedic reference. As we have here.... Guliolopez (talk) 13:23, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

If you get a chance, can you take a look at Corp Naomh...hoping to have this at FAC late nov, and given you have an interest in archeology, your feedback would be great.
