How come?

Hey Yerevantsi,

I wonder, how come all these links and references, which were numerous, are nonsensical, while specifically the two you added are not? Some specific reason that labels them all as unusable? Most are indeed not good at all, but could be supportive. That being said, the links you added are between 5 and 8 years old; maybe something more up-to-date is better? I will ask an user who lives in Iran as well and thus can read and write in Farsi to provide some proper up to date stuff. Bests - LouisAragon (talk) 18:58, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

In the modern times, there have never been half a million Armenians in Iran. It's a ridiculous figure. Plus, it comes from an atlas. There haven't been much demographic changes in 5-8 years in Iran. Citing a 2012 that is clearly false is no better than citing a 2007 scholastic article on the subject specifically. christianexaminer.com article cites "Compass Direct News of Santa Ana, Calif., which provides reports on Christians worldwide who are persecuted for their faith." it doesn't seem to be a reliable source. Neither is Ajam Media Collective (ajammc.com). After revewing the rest of the sources, two do seem to be appropriate (Semerdjian, The Hill and Mirzoyan 2010). Both of these two books are about Armenians, with the first one being specifically on Iranian Armenians. --Երևանցի ^talk 08:20, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

True, the number of 500,000 is clear nonsense. The problem is however that Iran hasn't had any reliable census for decades, which makes us have to search for multiple reliable sources to get a rough indication of their numbers. Its like with the Azeris in Iran. Most sources in the world state a number that comprises 24-30% of Iran's population, but for years (until some days ago, actually) the only somewhat recognized institutional sourcing provided by the CIA world factbook stated a number of 16% (even though until some years ago they held the number stabily on 25%). Regarding this line

Hello Yerevantsi,

Regarding the first line of the body of the Armenian Genocide page;

"Armenia had come largely under Ottoman rule during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries."

Is Greater Armenia meant here in general? (Which would be incorrect) Or just Western Armenia? Just thought of hopping by for a sec to get your opinion.

The term "Armenia" referred to a large area, which he can conventionally call Greater Armenia here. Yes, it should say Western Armenia, because Eastern Armenia was never entirely conquered by the Turks and remained largely under Persian rule until 1828. --Երևանցի ^talk 08:10, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

I disagree, and have returned it to just "Armenia". The term Western Armenia as used in the article refers to the result of the division of Armenia created by the Ottoman conquest of most of historical Armenia. So, it did not exist before that event - there was not a "Western Armenia" entity to be conquered. But better take this to the article's talk page. Because you disagree, you decided to just plainly revert it, instead of perhaps placing a comment on the link that I provided in the edit summary, that stated that we had some kind of a discussion. Great approach. I appreciate your concerns, however, I believe there are unfortunately problems and incorrectnesses regarding your argument. The concept of East and Western Armenia has always been roughly synonymous to the concept at the time of the Genocide, be it that Eastern Armenia had by then just come for about a 100 years in Russian hands, from 1828 to be precise. With your edit you're unfortunately erraneaously stating as if a notion of Western Armenia (which has always been comprising roughly the same territory) was only in use from the early 20th century, and differed to that in terms of concept as how it has been used for earlier periods of Armenian history. Scholars have been using the terms "Western and Eastern Armenia" for numerous era's in Armenian history, notably and only for when historical Armenia was split between the Byzantines-Sasanids, the Safavids-Ottomans, and later when Russia conquered Eastern Armenia from Iran, and the territory became thus divided between Russia and the Ottomans. I believe 1915 or the years prior to that makes the concept/the territory it roughly comprise(d) no different (in the very sense of the word) from how it was used earlier. Furthermore, the Ottomans indeed never entirely conquered Eastern Armenia, or held it for any extended period, thus theres a clear distinction. Western Armenia, from the 16th century and on, virtully literally equals to the Ottoman/Turkish dominated parts of historical Armenia. - LouisAragon (talk) 14:42, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

You might be interested in Grant High School (Los Angeles): it has a lot of Armenian students and there had been some incidents of racial tension with the Mexican and Latino students. I wonder if there's more info about the Armenian students and their backgrounds.

Kalustyan's

Hi Yerevantsi,

Kalustyan's has an interesting history. The area around Kalustyan's is now called "Curry Hill" in New York City. It is a direct result of Mr Kalustyan's shop. Thus Kalustyan's has played a historic role in transformation of an entire neighborhood in New York City.

Kalustyan's was regarded to be an Indian grocery store. Even today, to some extent it is. Kalustyan's was the forerunner of the hundreds of Indian grocery stores in USA today.

Please allow me a few days to complete the article.

Incidentally one of my friends also has the same first name as yours -Yerevan.

Armenian

Yerevantsi,

Eastern and Western are always relevant, regardless of the fact Eastern is primarily spoken in Armenia. To list something in the Eastern spelling then call it Armenian is intellectually dishonest. It makes a non-speaker believe there is only one form of Armenian. I am giving you a kind vandalism warning.

Western Armenia is irrelevant whether you like it or not. All official and unofficial literature in the Republic of Armenia is in Eastern Armenian. Try to familiarize yourself with basic Wikipedia guidelines before giving me a baseless "warning". --Երևանցի ^talk 19:31, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

It does not matter. In this world, Western Armenian is still spoken. "In the Republic of Armenia" doesn't matter. You're not too good with logic, are you? What is officially spoken in Armenia has nothing to do with the Wikipedia page. If that were the case, a page on Western Armenian would not exist. Your opinion does not trump reality. And, you're also quite wrong, as all church documentation is in Krapar or Western Armenian. You familiarize yourself.

So what ? Western Armenia has no relevance in Gyumri and all of modern-day Republic of Armenia. Yes it does, Gyumri is part of the Republic of Armenia and not a country where Western Armenian is an officially recognized spelling. Also, the "Western Armenian" spelling of Yerevan (Երեւան) is in reality the Classical Armenian spelling. Iranian Armenians do not speak Western Armenian, but they still use the classical orthography. I've added that spelling to the note next to its pronunciation in the intro. The church is highly irrelevant here. And even it was, how does that make Western Armenian relevant. Do you know the difference between Grabar and Western Armenian? because you seem to confuse the two. I agree that the classical spelling is somewhat relevant because it was in use for centuries. But why Western Armenian? I was the one who added the classical spelling to the First Republic of Armenia, United Armenia, Aram Manukian and other articles' intros, because the relevance is evident in those cases. Again, you fail to have logic. The fact of whether or not it is spoken is Gyumri or Armenia DOES NOT MATTER. It is a language spoken by millions and still has relevance in the world as a whole. I do know the difference between Krapar and Western - they are more closely related than any other dialects of Armenian. Krapar is the purest Armenian spoken, and western is closest to it. So, I don't know what your vendetta is on Western Armenian, but I will keep reverting the changes. @HyeSK:, I reverted your edit on the Yerevan page as I have to concur with Yerevantsi that your revision brings in simply obsolete information. The Western Armenian translation has no relevance on the article. Eastern Armenian is the official dialect of the Republic of Armenia (of which Yerevan is the capital), and the utter vast majority of the Armenians in Armenia speak the Eastern variant of the language. Western Armenian is virtually exclusively spoken in the diaspora. If you still think that his revision is incorrect, then please bring your concerns to WP:ANI. That is, if you continue to revert without presenting any reliable sources that back up the so-called "high significance" of Western Armenian in Yerevan or the Armenian Republic as a whole the way you present it. As well as, most importantly, bringing sources to show that it's an official language of the Republic of Armenia, as those are the main merits to be included. Casualties

Regarding your edit here [1], per the newest source there is here [2] Armenia is claiming 300 dead Azeri and 2,000 wounded. Also, one of the sources you inserted was a twitter post. Per Wikipedia policy, Twitter is generally not allowed to be used as a source because it is not verifiable. And even if it was, both the post and your other source are dated from April 5th. The newer source is from April 6th, which makes the other two sources (including the post) out-of-date and Wiki policy requires us to use newer up-to-date sources. Hope all this clears it up. Cheers! EkoGraf I didn't cite just a random Twitter account. It's the official account of the NKR defense ministry. I agree with using the latest one, but how is an article covering an Armenian diaspora protest a good source? If that's really the case (out of the 2,000 casulties only 300 being dead) then why can't you find a better source? I'm not saying it's wrong. --Երևանցի ^talk 19:22, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Its an Armenian source and as that it goes under the category of Armenian claims. Just as we put cited Azeri sources under Azeri claims. There are several other Armenian sources claiming the 300 dead, but this is the only source (so far) that I could find claiming the number of wounded (2,000). Crimea

According to general consensus on most reliable English sources Crimea is not a "natural part of Russia" but a part of Ukraine annexed by Russia without Ukraine's permission. This should be mentioned on articles dealing with Crimea. Hence your edit here was not up to Wikipedia standards. Moved Armenians in 1826-1829

Hey Yerevantsi, I was wondering whether you have more knowledge about this matter. I'm trying to pinpoint down how many Armenians moved/were moved in the aftermath of the 1826-1828 Russo-Persian War and the 1828-1829 Russo-Turkish War, as I want to bring and keep some consistency on these articles. However, the numbers given are kinda inconsistent regarding the matter. F.e, this reference by Herzig & Kurkchiyan (2004), p.66 states that "As many as 45,000 from Persia and 100,000 from the Ottoman Empire left for Russian-controlled territory after the end of the 1826-8 Russo-Persian War and 1828-9 Russo-Ottoman Wars." I've read other estimates given by other reliable authors as well. Any opinion/idea as for what numbers we should keep it at? Have you, by any chance, stored some references/information about this? @LouisAragon: Another authoritative book, Hacikyan, Agop Jack; Basmajian, Gabriel; Franchuk, Edward S.; Ouzounian, Nourhan (2005). The Heritage of Armenian Literature: From the eighteenth century to modern times. Detroit: Wayne State University Press. p. 10. ISBN 9780814332214., gives the total number of Armenian migrants at 130,000 in 1828-30 from both Persia and Turkey. Armenian Genocide denial

Hello, in my large series of edits over the last three days to Armenian Genocide denial in which I sought to rid the article of its abhorrent genocide apologism and pro-Ottoman bias, I also changed "Cyprus" in its mention of having genocide denial laws to "(southern) Cyprus", as I was convinced no such law could exist in Northern Cyprus. I believe you took offense here, perhaps thinking I advocated the self-declared state's legitimacy, which was not my intention. Could you please clarify? @Prinsgezinde: Thank you for your edits. I believe you made the contested changes in good faith. But the term "southern Cyprus" is usually used to legitimize Turkey's occupation of Cyprus' north. See here "Turkey, which does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, and the Turkish Cypriot administration of the northern part of the island, do not accept the Republic's rule over the whole island and refer to it not by its international name, but as the "Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus"." e.g. [5] [6] [7]

Ah, I was unfamiliar with that usage. The original sentence was: "The denial of the Armenian Genocide is officially outlawed in Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus and Slovakia." The fact that it didn't even mention that, if true, such Armenian Genocide denial would only be illegal in these countries because any form of genocide denial was illegal obviously intended to portray the old "Armenian conspiracy" as being powerful enough to "censor" countries. Anyway, in changing its tone I reasoned with myself that de facto Turkey would never allow person in Turkish-occupied Cyprus to be prosecuted for denying the Armenian Genocide. But I fully understand your point, and agree that we shouldn't promote it. Frankly, the page was filled with so many misleading and blatantly wrong claims that I'm not surprised I missed ones like this. The lead itself previously contained the apologistic line: "The Turkish government acknowledges that during World War I many Armenians died, but counters that Muslim Turks died as well, and claims that the number of Armenian victims has been inflated, and that massacres were committed by both sides as a result of inter-ethnic violence and the wider conflict of World War I." The whole article was a mess and frankly I was surprised it had been in that state for so long. Then I noticed articles like Turkish lobby in the United States and Armenian lobby in the United States (which previously called it one of the three "most effective ethnic lobbies in the United States" along with the Israeli and Greek ones), and POV-forks like Ottoman Armenian casualties and Ottoman Armenian population that carefully say "Western scholars say X"... It's pretty bad. I never know what to do about such large-scale problems but I'm glad people agree with most of the changes. Thanks for the input! Cut-and-paste move

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give ArArAt (brandy) a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. "As noted, in order to construct an Azerbaijani national history and identity based on the territorial definition of a nation, as well as to reduce the influence of Islam and Iran, the Azeri nationalists, prompted by Moscow devised an "Azeri" alphabet, which replaced the Arabo-Persian script. In the 1930s a number of Soviet historians, including the prominent Russian Orientalist, Ilya Petrushevskii, were instructed by the Kremlin to accept the totally unsubstantiated notion that the territory of the former Iranian khanates (except Yerevan, which had become Soviet Armenia) was part of an Azerbaijani nation. Petrushevskii's two important studies dealing with the South Caucasus, therefore, use the term Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani in his works on the history of the region from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Other Russian academics went even further and claimed that an Azeri nation had existed from ancient times and had continued to the present. Since all the Russian surveys and almost all nineteenth-century Russian primary sources referred to the Muslims who resided in the South Caucasus as "Tatars" and not "Azerbaijanis", Soviet historians simply substituted Azerbaijani for Tatars. Azeri historians and writers, starting in 1937, followed suit and began to view the three-thousand-year history of the region as that of Azerbaijan. The pre-Iranian, Iranian, and Arab eras were expunged. Anyone who lived in the territory of Soviet Azerbaijan was classified as Azeri; hence the great Iranian poet Nezami, who had written only in Persian, became the national poet of Azerbaijan.

He is the 'Julián Moreno' vandal, since he conducts a long term hoax, where he repeatedly inserts 'Julián Moreno' as the name of an actor into productions where he did not take part. I'm writing to you because that IP geolocates to Yerevan. Guessing that your name implies you know something about Yerevan, do you know anything about this internet provider UCOM LLC? One option is to do a long term block of Special:Contributions/37.157.222.0/24 but I'm guessing that such a block might inconvenience regular editors from Armenia. Recently someone has put completely false info on the top paragraph of the Hayk article, so can you do me a favor and fix the page. Country of Legality name change

Hi Yerevantsi,

Maybe you will be able to shed some light on this: I've noticed that English-language media uses the name "Orinats Yerkir Party" or "Orinats Yekir" instead of Country of Legality, as it is known here on Wikipedia. Perhaps we should rename the page on Wikipedia to Orinats Yerkir? This recently happened to Hanrapetutyun Party (until November 2018 it was listed on Wiki as "Republic"). 1917 election

Hi. I've been working on Russian Constituent Assembly election, 1917 and related article. One article that deserves a lot of improvement is Transcaucasus electoral district (Russian Constituent Assembly election, 1917), where my own language skill limitation blocks necessary improvements. One point in particular is the listing of elected deputies, I find Mesh saying Transcaucasus should have 36 deputies, but I found 42 names...
