The What Happened to the Earth? is the ongoing sixth concert tour by Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora, in support of her fifth studio album What Happened to the Heart? (2024). The tour started on June 26, 2024, at the National Stadium in Dublin, and will conclude on July 9, 2025, at the Vieilles Charrues Festival in Carhaix, spanning over 70 headlining and festival shows through Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia and Australia.
Background
[edit]The European and also first leg of the tour was announced alongside the album on 28 March 2024[1], with dates in several European cities including a concert at the Royal Albert Hall.[1] General sale for the leg started on 5 April 2024; people who pre-ordered the album received an exclusive ticket pre-sale link for two days in advance.[2][3]
The second announced part of the tour, with dates throughout North America, was revealed on Aurora's social media accounts and official website on 14 May 2024.[4]
Latin American dates for the tour were announced on 27 May.[5] It marked the first time Aurora had booked an entire tour leg at larger venues.
Australia and Japan dates were announced on 15 and 21 August, respectively.[6][7] Dates for Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong were announced on 22 October[8], followed by China dates on 16 December;[9] general tickets for the latest went on sale on 20 December 2024.
The last leg announced of the tour will also pass through Europe in 2025;[10] general tickets went on sale on 12 June 2024.[11]
Commercial performance
[edit]What Happened to the Earth? is a commercial success, marking Aurora's transition from theater shows to large venues. After the initial tour announcement, tickets for London and Paris were completely sold out in 10 minutes. Due to high demand in New York and Brisbane, Aurora has booked a second show at the Beacon Theatre and the Fortitude Music Hall, scheduled for December 6 and February 14, respectively.
During the Latin American leg of the tour, Aurora performed the biggest show of her career with a sold-out attendance of 18,000 at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. According to her tour manager, Nicolas Izzo, there were almost 40,000 attendees at just the 3 shows held in Mexico, not counting the South America ones.[12]
On November 21, 2024, it was revealed that over 60,000 people attended the European leg of the tour.[13]
Concert synopsis
[edit]AURORA takes the stage with The Goddess of Dusk (Intro) and follows with the introspective Churchyard, followed by tracks that balance moments of energy and delicacy, such as All is Soft Inside and Infections of a Different Kind. Classics such as "Runaway" and "Running with the Wolves" are also present, reinforcing the connection with the fans who have been with her since the beginning of her musical journey.
The performances are marked by her ability to create an immersive atmosphere, using her ethereal voice and expressive movements to convey deep emotions.
Musically, the performances strike a balance between the lyrical sensitivity inspired perhaps by her favorite singers Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan without the folk side and the atmospheric soundscape associated with Enya. Aurora explores electronic sounds and cinematic dynamics, possibly influenced by The Chemical Brothers and film scores, creating emotionally engaging performances.
Visually, the shows are a spectacle of light and color that seems to translate her music into visual form. The ethereal aesthetic, with nebulous sets and fluid costumes, evokes the mysticism of artists such as Björk and Enya, highlighting the connection between the natural and the surreal. Every detail, from Aurora's almost ritualistic movements on stage to the lighting that creates a dreamlike effect, transports the audience to a separate universe, reinforcing the emotional and spiritual connection characteristic of her music.
The combination of these sound and visual influences results in an experience that combines introspection and transcendence, leaving the audience deeply moved.[14]
Broadcast
[edit]The performance on 28 June 2024 at Glastonbury Festival, in Pilton, was streamed by BBC on iPlayer,[15] and the show on 18 August at Summer Sonic Tokyo was streamed by Wowow through their on-demand streaming service.
