[edit]Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Russia
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: no consensus for Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Russia, which now contains 3 lists and 2 other subcats which are not nominated here. Upmerge in Russia by federal subject and in Moscow. The question about "realistic potential for growth" overlooks the fact that it's premature to talk about one subcategory's growth potential when currently there are only 3 lists for the whole of Russia. -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:41, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

- Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Russia by federal subject (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Moscow (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Russia (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT. These three categories contained only one article: List of tallest buildings in Moscow, which is neither a monument nor a memorial. I removed it from the category. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:14, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Meanwhile User:Leonid Dobrov created another similar category, Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Samara Oblast with only one article. If it is not further populated, it can be deleted as well. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:01, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- I have just started a fresh discussion about Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Samara Oblast. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:50, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- Keep. Hello everyone! The stub of relevant article was added to Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Moscow recently to start it. As Marcocapelle already mentioned above, the “Samara Oblast” was added to Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Russia by federal subject, therefore that category has two subcategories now. Finally, since the scope of those categories is broad enough, I suggest to keep them for the further development. Thank you. Leonid Dobrov (talk) 08:13, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- List of monuments and memorials in Moscow is the only article that Category:Lists of monuments and memorials in Moscow will ever contain. So the WP:SMALLCAT rationale is fully valid. But, when the category is deleted, List of monuments and memorials in Moscow should be added to Category:Lists of monuments and memorials. 06:36, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Question. The scope of the Moscow category (as well as of any big city in the world) includes not only one article. At least, the category could collect the separate lists of monuments and memorials by administrative divisions of Moscow in the future. So why should we delete a category which does have realistic potential for growth (as WP:SMALLCAT requires) and reconstruct it in the future? Leonid Dobrov (talk) 19:21, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Most probably articles by administrative division in Moscow (if created) would be nominated for merger into their parent article. I do not see any realistic growth potential. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:42, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Delete Effectively an empty category. RevelationDirect (talk) 04:33, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Marcocapelle (talk) 11:06, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. The only content is the eponymous head article 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games, and 4 years after the event coverage seems to have stabilised in that single article.
No need to merge, since the head article is already in the same parent categories. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:22, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: In P.R. the subdivisions are called "barrios" not districts. Reference here: https://books.google.com/books?id=nXCeCQAAQBAJ Page 300 says "the municipalities are subdivided into barrios." the eloquent peasant (talk) 15:41, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Support. Unrelated, but the municipality of San Juan's Category:Districts of San Juan, Puerto Rico (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) is another category that should similarly be deleted to align it with the rest of the municipalities. There isn't such thing in Puerto Rico as a district, other than School Districts (and even those are now called School Regions). Mercy11 (talk) 21:15, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Ruined churches in Izmir to Category:Ruined churches in Turkey and Category:Churches in Izmir
- Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, currently only 1 article in this category and the parent Category:Ruined churches in Turkey is not big enough for diffusion by city or province. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:28, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:29, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: upmerge per WP:SMALLCAT, there are only 2 articles here, and we do not diffuse the reformed church buildings by the many small reformed denominations in the Netherlands anyway. (For background information, the former two biggest reformed denominations merged with the Lutheran church to the Protestant Church in the Netherlands and the Restored Reformed Church then separated.) Marcocapelle (talk) 09:25, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Comment shouldn't one or both be called "Restored Reformed Church" (e.g. Category:Church buildings of the Restored Reformed Church in the Netherlands) Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:55, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- The target concerns (church buildings of) a denominational family and the nominated category is proposed to be merged anyway. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:40, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- At the moment, it sounds like it's the buildings that have have been reformed or renovated, not the denominations. Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:37, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
- Now I'm getting what you are after. Then we would need to rename the entire tree of Category:Reformed church buildings. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:20, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Yup. Let's do it. Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:06, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: upmerge per WP:SMALLCAT, here we have several category layers for just two articles in total. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:16, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- I just noticed that I hadn't tagged the latter three categories, so I have done that now. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:55, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: These are invented film genres that don't exist outside from these category pages. While there might be one or two films that could be wedged into one of these categories, they are not recognized in mainstream film journalism. Right now, they are an example of OR. This is just a sample of dozens that have been created but it's a holiday. I'll tag the others another day. Liz Read! Talk! 05:48, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Oppose Altough you mentioned that they are not recognized in mainstream film journalism. In film journalism in other countries, they will tell you the places that these films originated from and one more thing, there are several movie sites that talk about these subjects. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 08:03, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:CATVER as none of the articles where they are used have sourced info in the articles to support them and my googling of the terms turn up no mentions in WP:RSs. MarnetteD|Talk 15:09, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:NARROWCAT. Betty Logan (talk) 19:37, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Query If Urs in Pakistan made pirate films, would they be called "Aarhs in Pakistan"? Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:57, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Comment No pun intended?? RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 21:28, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Delete all These do appear to be made-up genres. There may be horror movies with pirates in them but they are not called pirate horror films. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 21:00, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Question Do we think we can keep the "Chinese supernatural horror films" and "British supernatural horror films"? I know we can keep some of them but not a lot. Some are known in other countries that have supernatural themes and there's even categories dedicated to supernatural films from India and the Philippines. If not, then how can it be classified. As for the "mainstream film journalism", what are some examples? If I wanted to add these genres, that is the first thing before I can make them. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 21:27, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- RainbowSilver2ndBackup per the guidelines please do not remove comments (even ones you made) at a CFD as you did here. You are free to strike through the comment and explain your rational for doing so. As to your question please read the guidelines at WP:CATVER there must be outside reliable sourcing in an article for a category to be there. Cats are not added to articles based on what genre you think a film is. Please don't misunderstand your interpretation of a film is fine it just is not a reason for adding a category to an article. MarnetteD|Talk 22:22, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
- Comment - That's quite a motley crew of categories. Some I'd favour deleting, for others I'm not sure. I'd certainly delete pirate horror films, I can actually think of one or two other movies of this genre but this ever passing WP:CATVER is a far cry. On the other hand, Muslim comedy is almost but not yet there (e.g. [1][2]), and I think we have enough supernatural horror films to divvy them up by country. On the other hand, we could certainly do a better job of letting people know about WP:PETSCAN... Daß Wölf 00:14, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
- Per NARROWCAT I am generally against creating intersecting categories (unless they carry special attributes) and would rather promote Wikipedia search tools in their place. I think creating several layers of categories makes them less useful from an organizational perspective, and less exhaustive from a search perspective. An intersecting category (which is basically what "British supernatural horror films" is) can be easily searched by using Wikipedia's basic search. For example, just typing
incategory:"British films" incategory:"Supernatural horror films"
brings up the intersecting subset. Completely searchable and not dependent on editors adding films to the category, or any other maintenance. One of my biggest bugbears on Wikipedia is editors creating intersecting categories and then removing the films from the parent category making it impossible to perform a comprehensive category search, unless you use something like Petscan. I see no upside to creating an intersecting category: we are basically creating a shed-load of manually labor for something that is already automated, and sacrificing efficiency, comprehensiveness and utility. If you have all your horror films in a single category, all your supernatural films in a single category, and then all your British films in single category, it is then straightforward to search any permutation you want i.e. Supernatural horror films, Supernatural British films, British horror films, British supernatural horror films. - Oppose deleting the historical fantasy category, as it is one of the most common and widespread genres of fantasy. I am indifferent to the fate of the others. Dimadick (talk) 12:27, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hm. Retain historical fantasy per Dimadick, Ambivalent on the country cats for supernatural horror (we often do use country cats, but only for large enough categories where it's useful). Delete the rest as odd, non-useful overcategirizing intersections. oknazevad (talk) 13:32, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
- Delete all genre categories should only be created after we have an article for that genre, not the other way around.John Pack Lambert (talk) 07:07, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- Delete as undiscriminated category creation and random intersections. May I also suggest the few following gems: Category:Asian-American war films (war films that have some Asian American characters in them), Category:African-American war films, Category:Asian-American horror films, Category:Hispanic and Latino American action films, Category:Hispanic and Latino American comedy films, Category:Hispanic and Latino American crime films, Category:Hispanic and Latino American drama films, Category:African-American action films etc. Interestingly, having a black and a Latino character in an action movie gets you checked in pretty much all these categories, as for Colors (film).
