Nominator's rationale: Renominating since I feel the last one was derailed and the closer had no prejudice against a speedy renomination. Delete per WP:TRIVIALCAT. While listifying this, it turns out this not as straightforward. A number of these women received honorary degrees/degrees by decree and did not receive actual degrees. Also we don't categorize people by degrees. Omnis Scientia (talk) 23:50, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Dalit people. As an individual editor, I will make sure they are in an occupation category. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:34, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Misconceived category that's trying to cross a bunch of different things into one wrong name. As always, "artists" categories on Wikipedia are for visual artists, but almost everybody here is a musician or an actor or a writer or a filmmaker. Only one person in the category is actually an artist in the correct sense of the term, which is not enough to keep it even if it were to be purged of bad entries. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. (non-admin closure) Queen of Hearts (talk) 01:48, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Dual merge. Non-defining intersection between kind of dancer and ethnicity per EGRS Mason (talk) 20:53, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose split. Being able to distinguish between Romani people that dance flamenco and non-Roma Spanish people that dance flamenco is a very important categorisation to have. Flamenco was invented by Romani people, characteristic of Calé culture and then later subjected to cultural appropriation by the Spanish State under Franco; merging Romani flamenco dancers while not merging Spanish flamenco dancers would be quite problematic. --Grnrchst (talk) 21:43, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please review WP:EGRS. The issue is whether this category is defining at the intersection of Flamenco dancers and Category:Romani dancers . Your response doesn't address how this category is defining, and instead notes that helpful for distinguishing for specific nationality. Roma is not a nationality, it's an ethnicity. Mason (talk) 22:26, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From WP:EGRS: "Ethnicity example: An "(ethnicity) politicians" category should only be created if politicians of that ethnic background constitute a distinct and identifiable group with a specific cultural and political context." Flamenco dancers of a Romani background do constitute a distinct and identifiable group with a specific cultural and political context, as I have just outlined. --Grnrchst (talk) 10:13, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies, it's clear that I missed the middle section of your explanation. I'm convinced that this is defining. Mason (talk) 00:54, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • Oppose, again following Grnrchst. I wonder, though, how we can make this nomination less likely to be repeated in future when today's has been forgotten. Is there a Romani word for flamenco that could be used instead of "Romani flamenco"? --Northernhenge (talk) 20:21, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Professors without a doctorate

[edit]
The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure). Queen of Hearts (talk) 01:49, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a non-defining category. It's interesting, but not defining. Mason (talk) 19:59, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment:This category contains individuals with exceptional abilities, who as independent scholars have excelled in their field. Some multi-awarded individuals who serve as professors, and without academic degrees such as doctorates, master's degrees or even bachelor's degrees. These individuals and their research, discoveries, and projects have excelled even more than individuals who have studied and been affiliated with an academic entity, so they have been selected to serve as professors at different institutions. The discussion should focus on categorizing it correctly, rather than deleting it. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 20:22, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please review WP:Defining. As much as I love your sentiment that professors without a doctorate have exceptional abilities, there are many fields were a terminal degree isn't a doctorate, such as an MFA. Furthermore, as a professor who was without a doctorate for an entire year, before I finished my PhD, it was indeed the exception to the norm, but that's not a defining feature of my career. (If anything, I use it as a cautionary tale of what happens when you set your defense date for March of 2020... ) Mason (talk) 00:42, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations! Few people achieve the goal of graduating, and it's great that there is a potential professional who can give something back to society. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 03:16, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And they are characterized by what they are: professors (i.e. academics) without a conventional academic background. --Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 13:50, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep:On the other hand, the existence of the category may bother some individuals as there are people who have studied for years and do not become professors. However, there is also historical, political and religious content in the encyclopedia that may bother some people who read it, but it is part of the accumulation of knowledge of mankind. Furthermore, the encyclopedia does not exist to please a few individuals. --Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 13:50, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    >On the other hand, the existence of the category may bother some individuals as there are people who have studied for years and do not become professors.
Please assume good faith:@Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco you are implying that these votes are based on bias. Further, the nominator literally meets the criteria for inclusion in the category... so if anything I'd be biased toward keeping the category. Mason (talk) 00:59, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Not defining and not even defined. Does it mean actual professors (full professors in American parlance) or academics as a whole? Once upon a time many, if not most, academics (including professors) did not have doctorates. Even when I was at university some of the older ones didn't. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:36, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It refers to full and even emeritus professors. This can be verified by taking the time to read the articles. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 16:35, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"This can be verified by taking the time to read the articles" it sounds like a non-defining feature.... if it isn't something that is commonly used to describe them. Mason (talk) 00:44, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with Necrothesp and Mason – the word "professor" means different things in different contexts and (consequently) needing the collection of articles to explain/understand the category demonstrates that it's non-defining. Delete --Northernhenge (talk) 20:33, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This can be verified by taking the time to read the articles. You shouldn't have to. It should be defined in the category. But if it only refers to full professors this makes it even less defining. Why only full professors? Why not all academics? And as I said, countless professors have not had doctorates. From a modern perspective, yes, it is unusual, from an historical perspective, not at all so. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:36, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Until the middle of the 20th century, professors without doctorates were more common, but not in the present time. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 03:16, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But the category covers all of them! It doesn't specify dates. And shouldn't, really, as that's not generally how we categorise. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It could be clarified with a heading or change the name of the category from a particular date. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 16:00, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: lecturers, junior, adjunct, assitant and associate professors, etc. (many of them without doctorates) are not considered professor-level positions. Professors (also called full professors) perform specific tasks, and among this classification it is very rare to find professors without a doctorate or a conventional education. In some countries, for example, habilitation or aggregation is required to perform specific functions, and the fact that people with no academic degree (i.e. Doctorate, even Bachelor or Master) are in these positions is something exceptional. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 03:16, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • In American English "professor" can be a synonym for "academic", covering all the above grades. Hence the request for clarification above. Actually, a (full) professor performs exactly the same duties as one of the lower grades. It's merely an academic rank, just with more prestige attached. So, as I said, there's no particular reason to single out professors. We don't in other categories. We group all academic staff together regardless of rank. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:58, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Professor = academic?
That argument cannot be sustained unless there are sources to support it. Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 15:50, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: There are only two articles in this category, 2021 anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh and Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, 2024, which are also in Category:Anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh, to which this category is redundant. Category:Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh is also improperly categorised - its only parent is itself. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:47, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
