Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2009 February 3

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Note that those large block quotes have been added to the articles recently: [2]. They weren't there a few days ago. Do you see any copyvio problems with the Jan. 31 versions of the articles? [3], [4]. (The former does have one block quote, but it's not very long.) Zagalejo^^^ 04:46, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The block quote in the previous version is from another book and seems to be a much smaller chunk. My only concern is about fair use (many have a rule of thumb at about 300 words) and the block quotes making up such a large percentage of the text while being all of the information from the book on the subject (meaning, Wikipedia would have duplicated on whole the little information that is out there on the subject). I don't know the ins and outs that Wikipedia goes through on fair use, and I know only of my own experience with it as an academic. Ottava Rima (talk) 05:02, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
On closer look, the first line in the section called "Description" says "The Woodson Law Office is a beige frame building", which is almost word for word what the blockquote line says ("Woodson Law Office, a beige frame building"). Ottava Rima (talk) 05:03, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Note, blockquote was recently removed but can be found at this diff. Current wording is still too similar to that in A Place Called Appomattox, but is no longer cited to that page. The current listed citation has no mention of the color "beige". Ottava Rima (talk) 05:08, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I see. And there seem to be other paraphrasing problems. The current article uses the phrase "a typical Virginia's small town lawyer's office of the mid-nineteenth century," which is very close to the phrase used by Gutek ("a typical small town's lawyer's office of the mid-nineteenth century"). Looks like we may have a few things to sort out here... Zagalejo^^^ 05:12, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Should we contact Doug and see what he can come up with to fix the phrases that are too similar? I'm not sure what standard protocol is in these kinds of situations (which is why I came here). Ottava Rima (talk) 05:18, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I left a message on his talk page. Zagalejo^^^ 05:48, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Glad you brought these issues up. I have tried to address the concerns and made the corrections accordingly. Did not realize there was a 300 word limit to block quotes, so shorted it up under that amount. If there is anything further along these lines, please let me know so I can fix them.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:20, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I made a little note on Doug's talk page about my view of fair use. Ottava Rima (talk) 16:39, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have further revised one phrase. Otherwise, it seems clear. (I did some WP:MOSQUOTE and WP:EL cleanup while at it.) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:25, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
