Wikipedia:GLAM/Archives of American Art/Potential activities
This page is being used as a brainstorming venue for events and activities related to this project!
Backstage Pass
[edit]While the Archives of American Art does not feature vast collections that are easily accessible, such as TCMI or British Museum, we do have the opportunity to provide Wikimedians with a unique and interesting experience. Backstage Passes are a must have at a residency, and allow for "bonding" to take place between Wikimedians and GLAM staff. This Backstage Pass would consist of:
- Invitation to Wikimedians worldwide to visit the Archives of American Art for a tour and viewing of objects related to the collection. (Attendance cap is OK.)
- An insider's look into the acquisition of papers featuring Collections Specialist Jason Stieber.
- Jason would provide us with the process and his experiences regarding collecting materials for the Archives and give us a sneak peek into newly acquired collections and some of the stories behind them.
- Lunch, possibly sponsored by AAA including staff and Wikimedians.
- This allows for staff and Wikimedians to come together in a casual atmosphere - perhaps we can use this as a brainstorming session in relation to content in the collection.
- The last half of the day would be devoted to creating articles that are currently non-existent in Wikipedia with emphasis on topics interesting to staff. Staff will provide the necessary resources - perhaps this can be related to the Lists book?
Featured Article Prize
[edit]This could be the first time an organization in the US would give away prizes in relation to writing valued articles in Wikipedia! We provide the resources (i.e. finding aids) and the first 3-5 Wikipedians who create new Featured Articles about an individual or theme related to the Archives of American Art in any Wikipedia language edition will win a gift certificate to the Smithsonian store or a poster of the persons choice made by Art on Demand.
- Perhaps this can be related to the Armory Show?
- We can also work this into the art students prize - monetary award for best featured article biography - must be an active art student (i.e. send us a copy of your ID, or whatever), or keep it local.
Transcribing + Translations
[edit]Transcription projects can include a number of things:
- Transcription of a document in a foreign language → transcribe from original language to English.
- Transcribe documents to WikiSource - focus on one collection, or a contest.
- Unpublished poetry or writing? Would be a great way to get other Projects (i.e. WP:Poetry) involved.
- Article translation contest perhaps? Barnstar for AAA translations.
Artist Cook-Off
[edit]Have a public/SI staff cook off for recipes related to the Archives of American Art.
Other ideas?
[edit]- Something that is similar to The Hoxne Challenge?
- Is there a collection in the Archives that is notable enough to be documented?
- How do we work with other residencies in other countries? Global activities.
