Nsereko Afriqana

[edit]

Juba Juice created John Blaq, which looks suspiciously similar to Draft:John Blaq and Draft:John Blaq (2), both created by Caps Lock2018 (blocked for UPE). Same goes for Joel Muhindo: Caps Lock2018 created it, it was draftified and Juba Juice moved it back into the mainspace. Same story for Doreen Kabareebe.

Juba Juice was active since Feb 27, before Caps Lock2018 was blocked. Therefore, please also check for any other sleepers. (We may be dealing with a paid editing ring here). MrClog (talk) 11:30, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Caps Lock2018 and Juba Juice are very  Likely to each other. Nsereko Afriqana is  Stale (just barely too—there would be data if this SPI had been filed yesterday). The ranges involved are shared by a large number of unrelated users, so identifying sleepers is going to be very difficult in this case. However, I can say that the following account is  Confirmed to Caps Lock2018 because it was created at around the same time:
  • I think UPE is a possibility, but I'm afraid CU is not going to be very useful at shedding more light on that in this case.
  • The stale account Nsereko Afriqana has an idiosyncratic method of adding citations (compare references at [2] with [3][4]). Based on this, I can see the WP:DUCK argument. The timing of their creation of Deejay Crim fits with the pattern of Ugandan DJ drafts created by Caps Lock2018 around the same time (e.g. Draft:DJ Pius).[a]
  • All accounts  Blocked and tagged.  Clerk assistance requested: Please move this case under "Nsereko Afriqana", the oldest account. Thanks, Mz7 (talk) 23:29, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @MrClog: Sorry for the miscommunication. This investigation was a bit of a long rabbit hole, and I ended up having to leave for dinner before I could finish wrapping up the ends, which is why I put it on hold. Mz7 (talk) 23:32, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Footnotes

  1. ^ If you want to go further down the rabbit hole, there are a number of interesting overlaps between Nsereko Afriqana and the following accounts: These accounts almost exclusively edited either Murushid Juuko or Moses Magogo Hassim, which were among the narrow set of topics that Nsereko Afriqana was also interested in (e.g. [1]). However, these accounts are long-abandoned, so I doubt that any action or further investigation is needed on them.

Thatcher has recreated several articles by this master, including Joel M. Muhindo (Joel Muhindo, Jay Silver (musician) and various other names, as well as Mukose Umar, fka Prince Omar. Praxidicae (talk) 13:02, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm blocking based on the strong behavioral evidence, but wanted to note that the technical evidence in this case is a bit muddy (possible meat?). Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 06:56, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Check declined by a checkuser. The past accounts are  Stale, and looking into the deleted history of Draft:Doreen Kabareebe, it seems like Nsereko Afriqana is not the only sockmaster involved with this topic. I suspect this particular Kabareebe Doreen account could be someone else who has been engaged to promote this biographical subject on Wikipedia. In any case, this account has already been blocked for spamming, so no additional action appears to be necessary. Closing. Mz7 (talk) 01:13, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Very much the same style of edits. Not a huge portfolio of edits yet. Edits also appear to be UPE. Asking for CU though I think quacking may be sufficient 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 18:17, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Girth Summit Forgive my shortfall. I understand that CU cannot help since there is staleness. It's hard to be more specific, but we are looking at the promotion of singers, addition of spam links. It may be a naive user, but the geography coupled with the standard of edits and the promotion raises my antennae. I may just be too quick on the draw, and will be content to be told so. We may just need more contributions. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 18:33, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Girth Summit WIth the benefit of your clear sight I think you are likely correct. I deduced, perhaps incorrectly, this master and sock puppetry from the association of the blocked users you have noted. Shall we put this one down to experience and close? I get almost all right. I think I'm allowed an error now and then. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 18:52, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Additional information needed - Timtrent, please could you point out specifically what makes you think this new account is Nsereko Afriqana? The other accounts are stale, so CU won't help me, and you obviously have something you recognised that made you suspicious. I'm not familiar with the case however, and I'd rather not have to try to dig through previous socks' contribs to work out what set off your radar! Girth Summit (blether) 18:28, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Timtrent I suppose what I'm asking you is 'why Nsereko Afriqana?'. When I look at this new account's contribs, I see a couple of things. They have edited Slate Nation: when I look at that article's history, I see a lot of blocked accounts. Some of them are blocked for sockpuppetry (but are tagged as socks of different masters); others for promotion; others simply for disruptive editing. So, I don't see the connection to Nsereko Afriqana. Then, I look at their deleted contribs, and see a userspace sandbox where they're writing about someone called Lil Meek DC. I wondered whether there was a deleted article of that name, so I searched for it and found Draft:Lil Meek DC, but the author of that draft (who would appear to have an obvious COI) is not blocked as anyone's sock. It might be the case that one of Nsereko Afriqana's socks has written an article about this subject under a slightly different name, but I don't really want to have to search through all of their contribs (and deleted contribs, which requires a separate search) to find out. If you just tell me what is was that made you think 'Nsereko Afriqana', I'll be happy to take a look. Girth Summit (blether) 18:46, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'll just add that SPI cases need to be specific - their purpose is to connect accounts to each other. An account might be an obvious spammer, but that's an issue for AIV, even if they are probably someone's sock. I'm really not trying to give you a hard time, I appreciate your reports, I just need to know what to look for since my job here isn't determining whether someone is up to no good, it's making connections between accounts (and blocking where appropriate). Cheers Girth Summit (blether) 18:50, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Closing without prejudice, per the filer's request. This new account has entered socky waters, but without specific evidence there's nothing to do here. Girth Summit (blether) 19:10, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
