Martin Luther was born in 1483 in Eisleben and became the theological author and teacher of the Reformation. As a theological professor of the Augustine order, he rejected a number of teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church and encouraged an exclusive focus on Jesus Christ as the incarnate Word of God. His discovery of the grace of God, his preaching and writings – especially his Lutheran Bible – had a wide-reaching impact. They were used by many of the principalities of the 16th century to drive back the centralised power of the Pope and Emperor and permanently changed medieval society. Under the influence of the Reformation and against Luther's wishes, the church underwent a schism, the Lutheran Church was established along with other Protestant confessions.
