Proposals, August 2018
Please check how many articles qualify for a stub type before proposing it.
Additional subdividing of College football stubs
- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed creation of the stub template and/or category above. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the template's or category's talk page (if any). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the debate was create.
I jumped the gun with some bold categorization changes, not realizing the special casing issues around stubs and the 60 item threshold. Happy to cleanup/revert those edits, but looking for feedback before proceeding.
Category:College football stubs has established sub-cats of:
- Category:College football coach stubs (12 C, 53 P)
- Category:College football bowl stubs (117 P)
- Category:College football season stubs (4,896 P)
and I (incorrectly?) created and populated these three new sub-cats:
- Category:College football conference stubs (4 P)
- Category:College football program stubs (10 P)
- Category:College football stadium stubs (7 P)
So presumably I should revert those edits.
Note the driver for the 3 new sub-cats was most of the ~700 entries within Category:College football stubs are functionally "Category:College football player stubs" and above three article types (and similar) are getting lost in the sheer volume of the player articles, as this category is already within Category:Overpopulated stub categories. So perhaps part of the ultimate resolution involves organizing ~650 of 700 articles into a new player sub-category, which accomplishes my intended goal of raising the visibility of the non-player article stubs. Note, there is likely some overlap with any new "player" sub-cat and the existing "coach" sub-cat as you might expect. UW Dawgs (talk) 20:41, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- Note, I am comfortable using WP:AWB to update (only) the player articles, if that's the recommendation. UW Dawgs (talk) 20:49, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for acting in good faith. The main issue with the categories you created is that stub categories are populated by use of stub templates (for example {{Foo-stub}}), not by simply applying Category:Foo stubs to an article. The second issue is that, without a reasonable count of how many articles would qualify, we don't know if there's a need for a certain stub type (as you note yourself). If the rest of the stub sorters concur, I suggest the creation of stub templates for each type you created - {{collegefootball-conference-stub}}, {{collegefootball-program-stub}}, and {{collegefootball-stadium-stub}} or {{collegefootball-venue-stub}} - and upmerge them to Category:College football stubs. Her Pegship (speak) 22:47, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Based on the above, my proposal
- CfD the 3 new sub-cats (conference, program, and stadium) and revert the associated article edits, as the current counts of 4P, 10P, and 7P are unlikely to significantly change. There isn't a need to narrowly differentiate these 21 articles and the article naming conventions make obvious distinctions. They seem to belong in the existing catch-all bucket at the root, which we have via {{collegefootball-stub}} / Category:College football stubs.
- Create {{collegefootball-player-stub}} and Category:College football player stubs, siblings of {{collegefootball-coach-stub}} and Category:College football coach stubs; There are currently ~675 relevant articles.
- Update (AWB) the ~675 player articles within the full 700 articles as seen within Category:College football stubs, from use of {{collegefootball-stub}} to use of the new {{collegefootball-player-stub}}
- Later - As seen in Category:College football coach stubs, the 675 could be furthered refined via by-decade (Category:College football coaches first appointed in the 1970s stubs) sub-cats. That's beyond my current topic interest (and requires inspecting each of 675 articles to further refine), but it would address the existing Category:Overpopulated stub categories issue. Sounds good, yes? UW Dawgs (talk) 01:22, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
- I agree with #1 completely. #2: I would suggest {{collegefootball-bio-stub}} / Category:College football biography stubs as that seems to be the naming convention for sportspeople stubs (see Category:American football biography stubs &c.). #3: support, contingent upon renaming #2. #4: Not sure; player stubs in other sports seem to break down by position played rather than decade of birth. Anyone have other input? Her Pegship (speak) 18:31, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
- I agree with Her Pegship - though given the number of stubs, I can see the option of creating both -player- and -bio-, allowing articles for commentators, administrators, etc to be stubbed with bio, and for both player and coach categories to be subtypes of it. Also, dividing by position rather than date seems a good move - if any of the by position categories get too huge then a further split by date is an option, but it's likely they'll be fine for now.
- By the way, if you're keen on tidying up college football stubs (and thank you for that!) maybe splitting seasons by decade is another possible task... Grutness...wha? 03:33, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- Fine. Can we proceed with "player" and "bio" as the two new sub-cats? UW Dawgs (talk) 18:06, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- Sounds OK to me - what say you @Her Pegship:? Grutness...wha? 02:01, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Printmaker stubs

A quick count using petscan suggests that Category:Printmaker stubs would gather about 220 stubs, many of which are currently in the undifferentiated Category:Artist stubs. There is a template - {{Printmaker-stub}} - which currently points to both Artist stubs and Category:Printmaking stubs. There's long been an existing child category (Category:British printmaker stubs), and it's possible that other nationalities (especially Japan and the US) might get close to threshold too. Subdividing Acrididae stubs

This category currently holds 567 stubs about grasshoppers. Here is a sandbox permalink to see them organized by subfamily. As you can see, all but 68 belong to three subfamilies: Melanoplinae, Oedipodinae, and Gomphocerinae, each of which accounts for at least 100 stubs. Within the Melanoplinae, a single genus, Melanoplus, accounts for 109, leaving 115 in other genera. In the other subfamilies, there is no such dominance by a single genus, nor enough stubs to justify splitting at the tribe level. Thus, I propose:
- Category:Melanoplinae stubs - {{melanoplinae-stub}} - 115 stubs from genera other than Melanoplus
- Category:Melanoplus stubs - {{melanoplus-stub}} - 109 stubs
- Category:Oedipodinae stubs - {{oedipodinae-stub}} - 175 stubs
- Category:Gomphocerinae stubs - {{gomphocerinae-stub}} - 100 stubs
I'll be happy to do the actual creation and tagging. -GTBacchus(talk) 13:56, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

I suggest the creation of this new page since Iran has upgraded Ben District into a county. My evidence is at https://www.citypopulation.de/php/iran-chaharmahalvabakhtiari.php Catfurball (talk) 17:04, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

In Ben County there is only 13 populated places that have been created by different editors. Catfurball (talk) 15:50, 13 August 2018 (UTC) The stub articles in Ben County are connected to Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province; Persian language & Romanization. Catfurball (talk) 20:52, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
- Not sure what's meant by "connected to"; Category:Ben County is a sub-category of Category:Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. Category:Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province geography stubs is the parent category of Category:Shahr-e Kord County geography stubs, which contains the article Ben County. At any rate, I'd support an upmerged template for Ben County, but I don't know which stub category would be its parent, and it doesn't look like there would be many more Ben County articles to come. I suggest the creation of this new page since Iran has upgraded Saman District into a county. My evidence is at https://www.citypopulation.de/php/iran-chaharmahalvabakhtiari.php Catfurball (talk) 17:04, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

- In Saman County there are 24 populated places that have been created by different editors. Catfurball (talk) 15:50, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- What 24 articles are those? Can they be found by one or more existing (non-stub) category? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:23, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

The populated stub articles in Saman County are connected to Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province; Persian language & Romanization. Catfurball (talk) 20:52, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
- As with the Ben County articles: Category:Saman County is a sub-category of Category:Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. Category:Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province geography stubs is the parent category of Category:Shahr-e Kord County geography stubs, which contains the article Saman County. Again, I'd support an upmerged template for Saman County, but I don't know which stub category would be its parent, and it doesn't look like there would be many more Saman County articles to come. Another family of crickets

The result of the debate was create.
After sifting through all of the grasshopper and cricket stubs, tagging them by family, I see that there is one further Orthopteran family category in need of creation: Category:Tettigoniidae stubs, for the katydid family, Tettigoniidae. The template {{Tettigoniidae-stub}}, currently upmerging into Category:Ensifera stubs, is transcluded on 321 articles. Moving them into their own category would take a great load off of the large Category:Ensifera stubs (currently holding 395 stubs). -GTBacchus(talk) 10:21, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Support Speedy 1 creation of Category:Tettigoniidae stubs for existing template {{Tettigoniidae-stub}}, confirmed 321 subs using the template. -Furicorn (talk) 16:31, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, I didn't even notice those speedy criteria there! Thank you :) -GTBacchus(talk) 19:33, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- This one is done now, and that should be the last of the Orthopteran family cats for now. Of the new family cats, Category:Acrididae stubs is the most in need of further subdivision, so I'll analyze it next. -GTBacchus(talk) 17:26, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed creation of the stub template and/or category above. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the template's or category's talk page (if any). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the debate was create category Chardavol County geography stubs and ChardavolCounty-geo-stub.
I suggest the creation of the page Chardaval County geography stubs to replace the page Category:Shirvan and Chardaval geography stubs page. The country of Iran has broken up this county into two counties. Catfurball (talk) 22:34, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
- Would you mind giving a source for the correct spelling? I see Shirvan/Sirvan and Cardoval/Cardovol all over WP. Her Pegship (speak) 01:19, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- I've done some hunting in various databases for news, official country information, and/or various spellings of these places, and I can't find any reference in the last 3 years of any geographic changes to this region. I don't read Persian, so maybe someone who does could have a look at the official Iran website and see if it says anything? Her Pegship (speak) 17:57, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks to Catfurball, I can confirm that the spelling should be Sirvan County (Shirvan County is apparently a separate entity) and Chardavol County, per this website. Checking stub counts now. Her Pegship (speak) 16:45, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
