Kingdom of Futa

Ayuba Suleiman Diallo says that "he grew up with Sambo the heir to the Kingdom of Futa."
We don't have an article for Kingdom of Futa. Futa is a disamb page that does not mention any African kingdom. We do have articles at Kingdom of Fouta Djallon, Kingdom of Fouta Tooro, Fouta Djallon, and Futa Tooro.
(A) Can we make the appropriate redirect for Kingdom of Futa?
(B) It seems likely that some of the existing articles should be merged.
(C) We should add the appropriate articles to the disamb page Futa.

Hi. I don't think Kingdom of Futa would be useful except as a disambiguation page. When used in English it usually refers to Fouta Djallon and the people living there ("Futanke"). But it may also refer to the Tekrur/Tukolor state in the Senegal valley, Futa Tooro. In this case, the person (in by brief skim of the article) is in fact from Bondu, on the Faleme River, south of Tekrur and north of the Futa Djallon highlands. Michael A. Gomez. Pragmatism in the Age of Jihad: The Precolonial State of Bundu is the best on this: there's a discussion of terminology for us non Pulaar/Fulfulde speakers to which I've previously referred. In this case, I think we're a victim of British archaic usage, and probably is a reference to Fouta Djallon, especially since I remember a Sambo as in line to be Almami. I agree with T L Miles, and would add that Futa/Fouta reflects English vs. French orthography in rendering African names into Latin alphabet form -- A former professor of mine once pointed out that Felix Houphouet-Boigny's name would have been rendered Ufwe Bwanyi if he'd lived under British rule. How is a stub upgrade handled re tags?

Just now I've done some work on an article that I moved to Oorlam (ethnic group) from "Orlam Hottentots". There may be more to be done on it, but I think it is now beyond the stub stage. On the actual page I just removed the stub tags and also a "no references" tag since I provided references. However that leaves me with several questions.

1) Would someone take a look and see if I'm right in thinking it's now at least a bit more than a stub? If not, stub tags should be replaced. If that happens comment on Talk page would be helpful.

2) Is there some "next level up" tag that should go in?

3) On the Talk page, there is a WikiProject Africa tag that labels it as a stub and has a quality assessment box with no comments. If it is beyond a stub now, is there a different WikiProject Africa tag that should go in? Also, if anyone wants to do a quality evaluation of my upgrade, that might be good.

Comments about any of this on my talk page would be welcome.

I have intermittently worked on bits and pieces of Wikipedia stuff, mostly relating to southern Africa & particularly Swaziland, as that was the general and specific focus area of my graduate studies and Ph.D. work, but also on Bantu in its putative ethnic sense. However, I have been reluctant to put my name on either the project list or the Africa-related regional notice board list because I'm not very regular about it. I have to say that I find some of the project priorities opaque, probably because I am not much of a Wikipedian yet, and need to become more familiar with some of the formal and technical desiderata.

I wonder why most of the articles dealing with African political parties are untagged. I went ahead and assesed 164 of them (check my contributions) with WikiProject Africa and WikiProject Political Parties tags, but I think it would be wise to have someone else involved in the process. Make country-specific assessment visible

Could someone change the project template {{AfricaProject}} so that if a taskforce is specified, the country-specific importance is displayed instead of the "Africa importance"? Even though both are present in the categories, I think it would be more reasonable to visually show the country-specific rating instead of the African one. This is because many high- and top-importance articles for one country would probably be only mid- or low-importance in the context of the whole continent. And also, I think there should be more customization: for example, show the country-specific portal (if it exists), instead of the Africa portal, and so on. --Waldir ^talk 21:35, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi/Mid/Lo Importance? what is the standard?

Can someone explain to me how the various project importances are given?
I see that the mostly unknown group Abahlali baseMjondolo has been given a 'medium' importance rating, (in Human rights, Philosophy, Africa and Urban studies and planning).
Does anybody know how such ratings are given? What do they mean? How does such an obscure and fairly unknown group get an 'medium' importance rating? What are the requirements for low and/or high? FFMG (talk) 19:35, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Each project has its own standards for importance; you can see these by clicking on the "importance scale" link in the template. I'm not familiar with the group, and while I don't know whether they would count as obscure, they clearly don't merit mid importance in any of these broad projects. Everything at the same time, I'd say—informing that there are coding flaws that could be solved by using WPBM and putting the conversion up for discussion. (Usually this discussion would occur on the talk page of the template itself, though; it's more probable to reach just the people who are interested in the maintenance of the banner).

Of course, the project has an important say in this, but since in most cases very few people are interested in the particular implementation of a banner (as long as no functionally they use disappears), the edits are generally carried out before there are comments. If there are problems with the new implementation, though, angry (and justified) comments usually start coming in pretty fast.

AFAICT, no functions of the template were substantially changed, so this should only affect the person(s) who maintain the banner. (I believe that would be User:John Carter in your case.)

Other project members, therefore, don't really need to do anything with this.

The template talk redirects because User:Picaroon did that in 2007 with the edit summary "we don't want discussion getting split". I've just undone this because it can be very confusing having protected edit requests on a different talk page. I suggest that any of you who care about the project banner add it to your watchlist. Typo in template code?

{{AfricaProject|South Africa=yes}} adds an article to Category:Unassessed South Africa article, see e.g. Talk:Warrick Sony. That category does not exist. 'music of' templates

I built a template for the music of various regions - {{infobox music of}} - at the request of another editor (and because I thought this was something that would be nice to have a standardized template for), but when I started applying it here and there, I ran into a headache on African topics. there seem to be a bunch of different, individual templates at different levels of organization (single nations like Cameroon and the DRC, language regions like Francophone Africa, generic regions like East and Central Africa). I just don't know enough about Africa or African music to organize the material. can someone suggest an appropriate division, musically speaking? Anonymous complaint about a passage in Mengistu Haile Mariam article

I posted this at Talk:Mengistu Haile Mariam, and I'm reposting it here and at the WikiProject:Ethiopia talk page: After this complaint was posted at the "Administrators' Noticeboard/Incidents" page, I removed two unsourced, potentially libelous paragraphs about Mengistu's family members from the article [1] and a sentence about Mengistu's childhood. [2] The complaint appeared to focus on information that the article sources to the Paul B. Henze and Bahru Zewde sources. Someone with an interest in the subject may want to review that information for accuracy. Someone may also want to find sourcing for the passages that I removed, but also think about whether they violate WP:BLP whether or not they can be accurately sourced (I don't have an opinion about it). -- Noroton (talk) 18:11, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Mining industry of South Africa (sic)

This article seems really biased to me; it appears as though the author is attempting to minimize the amount of mining deaths and furthermore to lay the blame on the miners' improper following of safety techniques designated to them by the mine owners/companies in a fairly unobjective way. It also uses industry-specific language which would not be easily recognized by those outside the mining community. It additionally has misspellings, etc., which I will be happy to correct, but thought it should be reviewed overall first, as I thought it might affect a decision regarding the article's possible intended purpose. Well, it looks like a Wikipedia article, which is highly dependent on its sources and compromises between editors. That said, there are sections of the safety section that are just essays of how these problems are insoluble. Your should bring your concerns, very specifically but politely, to the talk page of the article, and see what other editors have to say about proposed changes. That's where these things need to be worked out.

You should do some research and find good sources. Realize that many sides will have to be presented. Wikipedia articles should report what reputable sources say, not tell us what the "truth" is, so there is space to say, "the industry group A says X and International Labor Organization says Y."

Once you've started discussing things, there are a couple of places -- which you've alluded to -- that are just opinion presented as fact. These need a "citation needed" tag, and eventually need to either be plainly attributed to some reliable source "x says y" with an in-line reference, or else removed.

Finally, there seems to be a lot of anon IP vandalism. Try and keep on top of this, and be willing to revert & warn vandals. T L Miles (talk) 18:23, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Bourse of Tunisia Article

I made a minor change to this article while browsing for local bourses. I found the reference that the Bourse of Tunisia is small and has only "50 shares". I believe the writer intended to use the term "stocks" instead of "shares" because it is highly unlikely that a stock exchange would hold only 50 shares of stocks, but likely that it would list 50 stocks. Shares are units of ownership of a corporation. It is these units that are traded on stock exchanges. Typically, when a corporation is offered to the public at least tens of thousands of shares are offered. If the Bourse of Tunisia holds 50 stocks that would indicate that 50 companies (likely of Tunisia) have offered shares of their companies to the public and are traded there. I provide no reference for this assertion other than that I am a Registered Investment Advisor and have held a license to sell stocks and bonds for approximately 15 years. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Africa to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

• The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
• The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
• I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
  • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
  • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
  • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
• The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
• The data is now retained indefinitely.
• The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
• Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [3]

The Linux folks already seem to be aware. Notifying a few related project shouldn't be considered canvassing. How else would they become aware? Is it canvassing when people add "such and such related deletion disscussion" tags on AfD? Ayegunle Gbede

Ayegunle Gbede is a town in Kogi State in northern Nigeria. It lies between Ayetoro and Iyah Gbede, at the intersection of roads from Lokoja, Kabba, Ayetoro, Mopa,Egbe,and Ilorin . The town is near Abuja just about 3 hours driving.

Ayegunle was in administrative headquarters Kabba division of the defunct Northern Region of Nigeria, which includes all of the current Kogi State.Ayegunle Market(Ohon) is a trade centre for coffee, cocoa, yams, cassava, corn (maize), sorghum, shea nuts, peanuts (groundnuts), beans, cotton, and woven cloth produced by the Yoruba, Igbira, and other peoples of the surrounding area.

Area of Botswana

On [Botswana] it says that the land area of Botswana is different than what [Geography of Botswana] states. Which one is correct? Some sources on the internet say it's approx. 582k km2, some say it's 600k km2. Is it because of a land dispute? Eallik (talk) 14:28, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Kibera and District 9, art reflecting life?

I am surprised to see no posts drawing the parallel between the movie District 9 and the relocation of Kibera. Sounds like the same story only more inept, on the part of the government, in real life.
