The WikiProject Congo was formed on 9 December 2007 to foster better articles on the nation of Democratic Republic of the Congo with a spirit of cooperation. This page and its subpages contain suggestions on formatting and layout of articles, which can be discussed at the project's talk page. To participate, simply add your name at the project member page.

Note: The founder of this page has no desire to claim the name of Congo away from friends of the Republic of Congo. Articles about the Republic of Congo and editors interested in that country are very welcome to participate in this project. In time, there may to two sections of the Wikiproject, the DR Congo and the Republic of Congo.

Scope

This project covers the creation and editing of articles related to the nation of Congo, its cities, counties, geography, transportation, culture, history and so on. It aims to expand Wikipedia's resources on Congo in a fair and accurate manner.

Description

I have formed Wikipedia:WikiProject Congo. Canada has a WikiProject but not one for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I believe we should freely welcome those interested in the Republic of the Congo so as not to deny those editors the name of "Congo". There is much work to be done. The quality of the articles can be much improved.

I would very much suggest moving the existing page to userspace. Also, there are now separate pages for work groups of WikiProject Africa for both countries named "Congo", although the Africa Project banner evidently hasn't been adjusted to accomodate all the work groups. I am making a motion to disband WikiProject Congo with the plan of possibly becoming active at a later date when more members participate and more articles are written or improved. This motion has passed with 100% voter turnout and 100% voting to agree. I have put a redirect while the page is dormant. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Democratic Republic of the Congo-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles, I've found some Iraq-related articles that I believe are about places, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Democratic Republic of the Congo articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

...and there are many more. At the time of posting this notice, there were 114 articles in this category left to tag with geographical coordinates.

Some PD images and maps

For anyone working on the DRC, especially the 1960s: I stumbled upon Dragon Operations: Hostage Rescues in the Congo, 1964-1965. by Major Thomas P. Odom, Combat Studies Institute. U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. While the content may not be helpful, it is filled with (mostly) public domain images and maps. Anything created by a US govt. employee in the course of his/her duties is automatically Public Domain, and uploadable to the Wikipedia Commons. T L Miles (talk) 20:26, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

I encountered the above article today during unreferenced BLP cleanup. I can't find any reliable sources for it, and the article's creator couldn't remember what he'd used. Does anyone at this project know of this person, and of any source I could use to verify the article? If I can't find anything in a week or so I will take the article to WP:PROD. New category: Category:Belgian Congo

I was surprised that such a cat didn't yet exist, so I created it. Still needs some populating (you can take some clues by looking at the French version of the category). Note that this does not cover Leopold's Congo Free State, but rather the 1908-1960 state. Thanks for any help sorting the proper articles into this category. Use the official names in all articles

I know that this has been discussed in the past, but the political situation is much more settled now - names and flags have been established for the long term and so it's worth making the point of sticking to official names again.

Congo-Kinshasa and Congo-Brazaville are historical names; they are also names which are used informally in the capital cities of the two countries, probably because the people who live there think they represent the whole country. It's pretty similar to people in London, or Paris, who think they represent the whole of their respective countries. However, those names are not the official names of any country in present times. It's not even open to discussion really. This is an encyclopaedia - and the names of the two countries are The Democratic Republic of the Congo and The Republic of the Congo (with or without "the") and nothing else. We are going into dangerous territory if we think we can change things. Remember, Wikipedia is used by millions of people as a primary reference. Francis Hannaway 08:12, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Francis, you seem to confuse "Kinshasa", "Brazzaville" and "Congo-Kinshasa" , "Congo-Brazzaville". The two former are the names of the capitals, the two latter are non official names used for the countries. If you want to compare it to other countries it would be like Guinea-Bissau (which is used in the official name) or Guinea-Conakry (which is not official). Whenever Congo-Kinshasa or Congo-Brazzaville have been used, it is not to refer to the capitals, even if some people might wrongfully think those capitals represent the whole of their respective countries as you say. The UN and others were using Congo (Léopoldville) and Congo (Brazzaville) in the sixties, it would be surprising if they were just referring to the capitals. --Moyogo/ (talk) 21:43, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Mbayi Kafwemb - Congo related article for deletion. Can you save it?

Hi editors, the Mbayi Kafwemb article has been marked for deletion. The discussion can be found here. I've tried to find reliable sources for this article to stop the deletion from going ahead but I am not having any luck. If I am right, as expressed by another editor, the name may be transcribed in error. After doing some digging, I think the name Mbayi or Mbaye is the title of a king e.g. Maad a Sinig and Maad Saloum among the Serer people. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the subject or the history. Does anyone know about this subject and stop it from being deleted? Having read other related articles, both in English Wiki and other languages as well as reliable sources, I do not doubt the subject nor do I doubt the notability of this person. However since there are no sources cited nor other names he is commonly known as, trying to find sources have proved difficult. Tamsier (talk) 07:23, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Mbayi seems to be a name. The Bena Mbayi (Children of Mbayi, Bena X is common in Central Congo-Kinshasa) are his descendants, that's all I can get from that name, so far. --Moyogo/ (talk) 08:07, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

I am in a Wikipedia contribution class on Poverty, Gender, and Human Development at Rice University and I want to expand upon the Sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo article. I am very passionate about this topic and I want to add onto this article because I think it will be beneficial to provide information to give the page more depth and portray its complexity. I want to add information on regional differences, different forms of sexual violence, and national and international prevention efforts. I came to this page because the article is very relevant to this Project and I hope to provide a more realistic portrayal of the situation in the DRC. This year's copy and the 1914 allegedly racist exhibition

At a world exhition, the 1914 Jubilee Exhibition there was an exhibition stand called the Congo Village (kongolandsbyen). Can anyone say for sure that the Congo Village is not a notable subject? This year there is scheduled a Congo Village art event in Oslo, named after the first mentioned village. Has anyone heard anything that might help my Norwegian perspective in writing about this event (or the 100 year old event)? Three residents or citizens wrote in a newspaper article, "We will not know until the 17th of May, if the Kongo Village of 2014 will amplify or kill prejudices". That article, "The Congo Village on wrong tracks" was in daily Aftenposten, Kongolandsby på ville veier. One of the wikipedias uses the term Human zoo about the original Congo Village. Congolese names

I've noticed there seems to be some confusion on Wikipedia about how Congolese personal names works. As I understand it, it is common for Congolese people to have three names of which only two are commonly used. For example, Lucien Bahuma whose actual name is Lucien Bahuma Ambamba or Joseph Kabila whose real name is Joseph Kabila Kabange. I was wondering if members of this project thought it might be worth creating a hatnote, similar to the ones that are used for Spanish people? —Brigade Piron (talk) 18:37, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

I also wonder if we should create an article about Jean-Pierre Pandi, the founder of the militia; however, I am afraid it would only be a stub at this point. Lever Brothers

Seeking assistance with the Lever Brothers article. Lever Brothers is a company that extensively used forced labor in the Belgian Congo. There is a request for comment here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Lever_Brothers The dispute involves an another editor who shows no interest in reviewing references deleting large amounts of information from the article, seemingly at random. @Ashy Waves: Hello there, thank you for your contributions concerning the Congo Free State and Belgian Congo. The focus of the forced labour discussion appears to revolve around the activities of the Lever Brothers subsidiary, Huileries du Congo Belge (HCB). I think the level of detail of the information at the Lever Brothers article is perhaps WP:UNDUE. I'd recommend writing a whole new article for the HCB and then moving most of that information there. Indy beetle, As long as the Lever Brothers article contains at least a summary, sufficient to get the point across that genuine forced labour was extensively used, with a link to the HCB article at the top of that summary, I don't see a major problem with that. However, it is important that the information be included in some way regardless of whether the subsidiary was used for whatever legal reason. Lord Lever still played a rather direct role in organizing the forced labour. Ashy Waves (talk) 19:33, 17 March 2018 (UTC) Like it wasn't an independent, separate subsidiary. William Lever personally traveled to the Congo to negotiate with the Belgian government. The HCB was simply another company set up by William Lever, to provide palm oil for the soap his company made. Some of the less detailed references simply attribute the forced labour to Lever Brothers or Unilever, rather than bothering to mention the involvement of the subsidiary. On my talk page someone left a comment stating, "Stop spamming your proposed content all over the place and read WP:CANVASS. Also, do not create RFCs with invalid opening statements." This seems to confirm my fears that I may be blocked soon just for disagreeing with people on talk pages. If that happens I hope you or someone else will talk to me on my talk page, Indy beetle. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.
