After seeing that the new account is citing only that domain, I ran a poke but it only showed one other blocked account, ApeironDeGruyter that had added it a few years ago. There are 300+ links to that site however but I don't know how many accounts may have added it. Needs further investigation.

Cite spam - research of Damaševičius et. al.

I have just cleaned up some systematic cite spamming (20+ additions) for Damaševičius, a Lithuanian academic. Despite being an academic, he (or someone connected to him) is apparently not above misusing other projects for blatant self-promotion of his own research. The vast majority of these additions have been tangential borderline coatracks and/or advocacy, adding little to nothing of relevant encyclopedic information (removed all but one good-faith edit). As always this is just a short notice for other volunteers to be aware of similar cases in the future - no immediate action needed. GermanJoe (talk) 12:06, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello. I have noticed that various spamlink campaigns have taken place towards a website called investing.com (for which we have an article, Investing.com). Based on the links that are still present today, I identified 2 main campaigns:

  1. in the last months of 2014, when 30 different IPs added 30 links in mostly big corporation articles
  2. in March 2017, when 123 different IPs added 123 links in economy and finance articles

Most of these usages are crap, to be frank. Their data collections are unreliable per their own disclaimer. Their "articles" are mostly copypaste rip-offs from other publishers (and could be simply replaced with the original legit publisher). Some of their reviews and analysis might be useable with the caveat, that these usages should be presented as opinion and not in Wikipedia's own voice. After checking and removing ca. 50 of the ca. 240 links (I'll take a break now :) ), I can safely say that the vast majority is blatant spam (aside from a very few good-faith erroneous usages, which should be replaced anyway). Not a single usage was valid based on our sourcing and EL policies. It would be great, if other interested editors would also take a look at some of the other usages to remove the remaining spam and non-reliable referencing. @Biwom and GermanJoe: My initial action is going to be 'plus Added to User:XLinkBot/RevertList' (and shortly RevertReferencesList) to keep them out to a certain extend. I the remaining 200 links have been cleaned up we'll assess how much of the 300 links are good enough to stay, but if that falls below, say, 5% of them (15 left), I am pulling the trigger for blacklisting based on your assessment. @Biwom: You can just remove them, and where necessary replace them with {{fact}}. If the articles are clearly coatracks (written to spam these links), then I think they can be deleted as {{db-spam}}. And the aim of the exercise is to minimize, we don't necessarily have to remove them all (the odd link does not disturb too much, but editing in mainspace may be impaired in extreme cases, which will happen more if there are a lot of links left over. Hello. I am under the impression that they do not create much original content, so even "legitimate stuff" can be redirected towards other news agency websites or financial data websites. @Biwom: There is the subject page, where we always include 'an link to the official website' - that is until now the only one. Then there may be some primary referencing needed here and there. Heavily used by recent articles created by User:Highstakes00 sock. Appears to be non-RS mixing user-generated content (corp PR, basically) with other stuff without any heads-up to readers. I had this whitelisted on LiWa3 (meaning that it does not report on it, and that COIBot does not save the report), as a much used reference/link. I have no removed it (temporary maybe) for a report to save. Hello. Actually there are many, many of our policies you are infringing, but this is partly due to the fact that we have too many policies. So most importantly you are infringing the first of our 5 pillars, "Wikipedia is an encyclopedia", which you can read here: WP:5P1. You can see it says very explicitly "Wikipedia is not an advertising platform". Can you imagine what Wikipedia would look like if all the KighanHill of the world were adding links towards their businesses because (no doubt) some of our readers might be interested in their products? @KighanHill: Thank you for your response. Actually, the most relevant documents (which you are not following with your edits) are m:Terms of use (you are related to the website, have a clear conflict of interest, and did not disclose that, it is a requirement that you do that). Secondly, as stated, you have a conflict of interest, as described here: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. That guideline strongly suggests you to NOT edit according to anything that you are related to. That includes editing IMVBox, and adding links to a website that you are affiliated with (extending to material that you created on websites that you are not affiliated with, the subjects of direct competitors, or having been paid to add the links by someone of the website (SEO), etc. etc.).
With regard to the links you are adding, those are not following our inclusion standards. We do not link to anything related. Our policies and guidelines regarding that are strict as to what can, should and should not be linked.
I stand with the suggestion that all the external links should be removed, and add that the article IMVBox should be checked and possibly tagged (there the external link can stay). --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:24, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
