Discography - what to include

I know this has probably been covered before, but I can't find it. If you have an artist who has released a couple albums on a label, and then came out with a "self-release" live album through their website, should this be included in the discography? It seems to me that the discog. should be limited to "proper" "official" releases, whatever you want to call it. Example [1] - I don't think this should be included. Sometimes artists can have trouble with labels through no fault of their own. The music released on the artists own, without a label being involved, is still their music. If they are already determined to be notable in Wikipedia, that might be a factor, but I'm not sure if it qualifies to be included unless it appears in a source other than on their own web site. Unreferenced BLPs

Throughout 2010, many Wikipedia editors have worked hard to halve the number of unreferenced biographical articles (UBLPs) from more than 52,000 in January to under 26,000 now. The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons has assisted in many ways, including helping to setup a bot, which runs daily, compiling lists of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your WikiProject's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians/Unreferenced BLPs, with a more specialised list by music related sub-projects at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/UBLPs by music. Currently you have approximately 2666 articles to be referenced. A list of all projects that are being tracked can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects. You can also use the WP:CatScan tool to generate lists of whatever interests you - for example, this search generates a list of the 17 articles which are both unreferenced and in Category:Russian singers or it's subcats.

Eponymous musician categories

Could some set of standards or minimum requirements by set for when an eponymous category for a musical artist can/should be started? Based on WP:Overcategorization#Eponymous, for artist Foo, I don't think having Category:Foo albums and Category:Foo songs, Template:Foo, and Foo discography is enough, and I have attempted at times to clear those categories for deletion based on this policy, and with opposition, brought to CFD. If allowed to be kept, then maybe every artist who has enough releases to warrant a separate discography page should also have its own category (because if they have a discography page they would probably also have a songs category, an albums category and a template). Maybe anything more than this would be more acceptable (e.g. Category:Foo members, Category:Foo concert tours, and/or some other related article(s) not as easily categorized).

In 2007, consensus at CFD was to delete most of these categories when all there was were these pages/templates/categories for the artist. Here are a couple as examples:

• CFD 2007 Jul 11
• CFD 2007 Sep 19

Here are some more recent CFDs resulting in No Consensus, and thus keep, in reverse of the earlier trend.

• CFD 2009 Mar 15
• CFD 2010 Mar 8

A recent example of one that now exists is Category:Deborah Cox. I'd like to put it up for CFD, because I believe it falls below what minimum requirements should be, but there is obvious debate on that. So I bring it here for discussion to see if we can agree on these requirements, and put it somewhere where it can be referred to in the future. I am in favor of allowing eponymous categories for quite a lot of musical artists. They serve as a navigational aide for those reading or writing about the artist, and make doing so simple. Per WP:LISTPURP, the redundancy of categories, lists, and templates is not only long accepted, but is necessary.

I feel the minimal requirements should be either multiple articles or multiple categories that can fit into the eponymous category. Some examples are:

• A category on the artist's albums and a category on the artist's songs, plus a discography page.
  • A multimedia category can be added too, but this is not necessary.
  • For bands, there could be a category of the band's members, but this is not a requirement.
• If there are too few albums or songs to make categories on these, but there are several total articles, then there could be a category.
• One-hit wonders who have released one album and one song period and have no other related articles should NOT have a category of their own. Often, these artists are not worthy of more than an article about themseles describing the album and song.
• Those who have recorded only on soundtracks or other multi-artist compilations should only have categories if these compilations are placed into a category pertaining to that artist (which is not usually the case).

• Pretty much every musical artist or group notable enough for Wikipedia is going to have released at least one song and at least one album. Per the criteria at Category:Albums by artist and Category:Songs by artist, every album goes into a Category:Foo albums and every song (including notable covers) goes into Category:Foo songs. If a band's members are independently notable and have articles, they get a Category:Foo members per Category:Musicians by band. So right there every musical act has two or three sub-categories. There are a couple of editors who argue very forcefully in favor of such eponymous categories and a couple of editors who argue very forcefully against them. Consensus was pretty consistent a couple of years ago that these eponymous categories were not needed if the material was restricted to these subcats along with a few more related articles. One of the editors who argued against the categories dropped out of CFD which is when the consensus started to shift. Those in favor of keeping them used to go by this supposed rule of thumb of keep anything with three sub-cats; now one of them is arguing in favor of keeping categories with only two subcats.
• I believe that WP:OC#EPONYMOUS is pretty clear on the subject when it says In general, avoid creating categories named after individual people, or groupings of people (such as families or musical groups). If there's a lot of material related to a musician (for example Paul McCartney) and it can't easily be navigated by links within the eponymous article, then fine, create a template and/or a category. But the idea that people won't be able to find a singer's songs or albums through the main article is ludicrous. I have never seen an article for a performer that doesn't include links to every song and album along with links to a separate discography article if there is one. No one's going to get lost trying to get to an album from the artist's article. I do agree with you. Unfortunately, these types of categories for musicians/musical groups, even with minimal entries, are being kept in CFD, so I am following the current consensus. The Dusty Springfield article has not met GA criteria and has been failed. I really wanted to take this all the way to GA status, but it is taking too long, and I have to move on now. Template

I wonder if someone out there could answer this for me? I help maintain the page for The Gracious Few. A while ago we had a template (Navbox Musical Artist) but it was nominated for deletion and subsequently was deleted. Now that they've released an album and two singles, can it be added again? Could a more knowledgeable editor throw an eye over above article limited notability is asserted but it is only sourced to MySpace and have had a look but can't seem to find and reliable sources to add to the article might not be looking in the correct place. Dominic Cifarelli

Someone who claims and appears to be Dominic Cifarelli is looking for someone to expand his article. In a nutshell; he added a bunch to the article, I deleted it as unsourced, he asked me to put it back, I pointed him to WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIO and asked him to find sources for someone else to use in expanding the article, he listed them on my talkpage, and I moved them to the article's talkpage. Treasure trove of concert photos from the 1970s on Flickr

Hi, the German professional photographer Heinrich Klaffs published several hundred photos from the 1970s on Flickr under a free license useful to us (cc by-sa). The Collection is simply amazing: B.B. King, Benny Goodman, Bod Dylan, Can, Credence Clearwater Revival, Chuck Berry, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Dire Straits, Elton John, ELP ... and that is only one third of the alphabet. Can you identify this musician?

There are some news clippings that he uploaded onto the concerts and press page of his site. He may have started to create a page on the English language Wikipedia, and never accomplished more than uploading his photo. I have not checked his notability. Perplexed

As to why anyone in their right mind would want to include Pipe Bands into the realm of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Musicians#Who_to_add - and as I am in process of trying to resurrect the Pipe Band project - am finding the issues of having an offshoot of the biography project - too large as it is - potentially quite problematic - am wondering if there any active members of this project who might remember why this occurred and as to whether it is still really necessary to really consider it a viable practice? Pipe Bands change their membership much more regularly than other 'bands' and to have a biography tag seems a superflous activity - would appreciate a response if possible - if anyone is up with this part of this project - cheers Satu Suro 04:12, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

M.I.A.

I have recently passed "M.I.A. (artist)" as a Good Article.

The article was previously partially reviewed by Atlantictire. However there were major differences of opinion between Atlantictire and the main editor, Lifebonzza. Lifebonzza asked Atlantictire to fail the article in order to work with a different reviewer.

After I passed the article, I asked Atlantictire if he had any further comments. Atlantictire's response indicates ongoing concerns.

I'm happy with the article finally passing GA status, and per your summary of the GA review I'm happy that the article meets all GA criteria, including that it is non-biased, detailed and well cited. If you feel the article meets all criteria, there is no reason to ask for comment from a previous reviewer. Regarding the previous GA review for the M.I.A. article, it was established the previous reviewer User:Atlantictire did not display a willingness to stick to wikipedia policy in general, nor did it appear that User:Atlantictire was sufficiently aware of wikipedia policies or the GA process. No more clearly is this demonstrated than in his expressed desire in a response to your query to see users banned from editing articles because Atlantictire's vision for the article did not come to fruition, making me seriously question and concerned at his ability to edit with good faith, or indeed the motivations behind his use of wikipedia. This is understandable given User:Atlantictire's little experience on wikipedia although one cannot ignore the possiblilty of agenda driven editing by this reviewer which was also raised in that review. It was agreed with another editor during that review that certain demands and insistences that would violate policy by this user were not conducive to a balanced article or editor for that matter. The GA review Talk:My Chick Bad/GA1 that User:Atlantictire reviewed in parallel was also asked to be failed on similar grounds by the nominator there, although this was even more overtly due to Atlantictire's inexperience. This article was soon passed by the next reviewer for that article. I still hope that with experience, User:Atlantictire will become a more balanced editor and skilled enough to review. It was a pleasure reviewing this article with you Axl, and I look forward to contributing to many more wikipedia good articles in the future! Lifebonzza (talk) 14:06, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Let me start by saying that I have no personal feelings or opinions about M.I.A. or her music. It's just that when I began cursorily fact checking the article it immediately became clear that M.I.A. is a very polarizing figure and that the Wikipedia article had been written largely as a refutation of M.I.A.'s critics. Since it seems as though Lifebonzza is an ardent M.I.A. fan and her primary objective in editing the article is to favorably influence the public perception of the artist, it was impossible to convince her to add information that would accurately reflect criticism of or controversy involving M.I.A.

If anything, I was being too strict about the Wikipedia criteria for GA--namely that the article be objective. I was merely following the rubric for GA that I'd created from the Wikipedia criteria. This rubric is on my user page.

Lifebonzza has been working on the M.I.A. article for several years now, and she has a significant history of bullying other editors who attempt to contribute to the page. I am concerned that awarding the article GA status will incite her to be even less open to contributions.--Atlantictire (talk) 18:30, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

The article is now a GA thanks to the effort of all editors who have contributed, covering praise and criticism in due fashion, and users like Atlantictire should now rightly feel more pressure to refrain from introducing any of their invested biases into the article, as should any other user. Should edits continue to be made (by Atlantictire or anyone else) that are discredited on wiki talk pages or violate policy, they will be boldly and swiftly reverted without discussion. Given Atlantictire's history of contributing on this article with negative bias and policy violation while removing reliably sourced information that is positive, it remains to be seen what the future holds. However, should a user continue to violate policy, (through personal attacks, lack of good faith, article bias etc.,) referring this user to a committee isn't too much of a stretch. 'Spouse' field

This has been proposed and rejected many times at Template talk:Infobox musical artist. The basic reason is that this is a specialized infobox for musicians, so it restricts itself to fields that are pertinent to a person's career as a musician. The large majority of musicians' spouses have little or nothing to do with their musical career. WP:UNDUE issue at Chris Brown (American singer)

Opinions are needed on this matter. Earlier, I reverted to the previous formatting, per my reasoning at Talk:Chris Brown (American singer)#section 1.4 needs to be reWritten : 2008–09: Graffiti album and domestic violence case. Splitting up the sections to where his domestic violence case is highlighted is a sure case of WP:UNDUE. There is no valid reason to highlight the section by making it its own section and separating it from his career efforts at that time, especially since it (the domestic violence case) affected those efforts. It makes more sense to keep all that information there in one place. This is also how biographies of living people are typically done -- avoiding Criticism or Controversy sections by themselves. They especially follow chronological order. If the Michael Jackson article (which is featured) can combine controversy with career happenings without any problems, then I do not see why this article cannot as well. Jascha Heifetz update

There's a lot of current interest in Jascha Heifetz this year, due to three things that are happening in 2011:

• The new 103 CD collection from Sony/BMG, which has won the Guiness World Record for largest CD box set by a classical musician.
• The premiere of Jascha Heifetz: God's Fiddler, a film by Peter Rosen, that was shown at the Colburn School, and will air on PBS and in Europe this year.
• John Maltese and John Anthony Maltese are publishing a book on Heifetz in late 2011.
• I've left some suggestions and made a few tiny changes noted here.

Unreferenced BLPs - the final surge

Since early in 2010, many editors have assisted in the referencing or removal of over 90% of the Unreferenced Biographies of Living People, bringing the total down from over 50,000 to the current 4,861 (as of 15:26, 1 June 2011 (UTC)). We are now asking for your help in finishing this task. There are two main projects which are devoted to removing UBLPs from en.Wikipedia:

• WP:URBLPR is focusing on clearing out the backlog based on the month in which each article was tagged as being unreferenced. The current task is Category:Unreferenced BLPs from September 2009, and it is the last month remaining from 2009.
• WP:URBLP has set up a large number of topic based lists, which are updated each day by a WP:BOT. Your project's list is located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians/Unreferenced BLPs and currently contains 981 articles.
• You can also reference a random article or make your own lists using one of the catscan tools, such as this search for Scottish musicians.

All you have to do is pick your articles and then add suitable references from reliable sources and remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template. There is no need to log your changes, register or remove the articles from the list. If you need any help, or have any comments, please ask at WP:URBLPR or WT:URBLP. Could someone find some reliable, independent sources for this article. I looked for them for the English-language name, but didn't find any about this person - only about other people with the same name (I tell a lie, I found a minor mention along the lines of "Singers include Abdul MNajid Adbullah who is famous and xyz who ..."). However, I do not read Arabic, so I cannot tell if any of the hits on GNews Archive, etc, are about this person, rather than another person with the same name.

I would follow what people have been doing with with person names for a while (esp. British footballers), but use 'formed' instead of 'born'. So Sharks (band formed 1972) and Sharks (band formed 2007). I'm not sure about the remaining Sharks (band) and Sharks (rock band) redirects. Navbox musician has been challenged

Please see the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Navigation templates#Red links in nav boxes where Neelix has challenged the pactice of displaying non-linked articles or non-notable entries for that matter in navboxes as part of a discography. Discography clarification

A discussion has started at Talk:Michael W. Smith#Works section regarding which albums should be included in an artist's discography section when a separate discography article exists. I'm going on the basis that only main releases (usually studio albums excluding EPs, live, and special releases) should be included but the other editor is holding on to the idea that a "basic summary of the musician's work" means only the album and year of each work should be included regardless of the type. Certainly there are some cases where it makes sense to include a live album (e.g. Live at Leeds) or a compilation (e.g. Singles Going Steady). Other times not as much. Sometimes studio albums are probably of minimal significance and don't need to be mentioned (e.g. Cut the Crap). Why must there be a hard and fast rule? Could anyone let me know whether Lines Across Maps meets the notability standards at WP:BAND? I guess have been played on BBC Wales is a claim of notability, but their music is self-released. The Mark of the Beast (talk) 03:11, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Releases seem to include only one EP and a single. I see no evidence of national or international tours, which I would expect with a notable band. • The "voice type" field was removed from Infobox musical artist in October 2009 following a discussion which J04n's link is referring to. There's more background to the question in an earlier discussion. The gist of this is that vocal range and voice type are not the same thing. Vocal range (the span of notes a singer can sing) is only one determinant of voice type, which is only systematically applied to opera and classically trained voices. Even in choral singing, only 4 types are assigned SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). People often confuse the two and they often confuse the ability to make a very low/very high note for effect with the ability to sing consistently and competently the music specifically composed for that vocal range. For classical and operatic singers, their voice type determines the roles they will sing and is a primary method of categorization, for non-classical singers, it is not a defining characteristic.

  As I wrote in List of tenors in non-classical music, "In non-classical music, singers are primarily defined by their genre and their gender and not by their vocal range. When the terms soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone, and bass are used as descriptors of non-classical voices, they are applied more loosely than they would be to those of classical singers and generally refer only to the singer's perceived vocal range." (See article for the references.) In my view, if a non-classical singer's voice is widely discussed in terms of its range, it may be suitable to add it to the article, provided that it is impeccably referenced. Only in the rarest of cases should it be used in the lede as well. To do so is unencyclopedic. To assign specifically operatic voice types such as "heldentenor", "coloratura soprano" "spinto soprano", etc. to articles about non-operatic singers is simply wrong and a disservice to the reader. You will never find reliable sources using classifications like that for non-operatic singers.

  To illustrate the difference between the encyclopedic use of voice type for opera singers and singers in other genres, just look at biographical dictionaries and encyclopedias. For example, you can find instances in the popular press where Judy Garland's voice has been described as a contralto. Look her up in The Riverside Dictionary of Biography (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2004)—not a word about it [3]. But look up Marian Anderson—the first thing it says is "US contralto" [4]. Similarly, you can find references in the press refering to Bruce Springsteen's baritone. Look him up—not a word. Look up Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau—the first thing it says is "German baritone".

  Is there a general consensus anywhere about adding the vocal range to non-classical singer articles and how to do it? I don't think so, apart from the consensus that it is not appropriate for their infoboxes. I suspect that this will just have to be discussed at individual singer articles when there is some kind of dispute there. However, this discussion might tease out some general opinions and arguments that could be used in such discussions. Voceditenore (talk) 10:57, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

• A few thoughts regarding "voice type" or vocal range for non-classical (pop/rock/etc) singers...

1. It should only be mentioned if there is a reliable source and the singer is widely known for a specific vocal range - I could imagine Michael Ball perhaps, but not John Lydon
2. It should almost certainly not be in the lede - we should never say, eg, "X is a soprano" for a pop singer - unless there are exceptional circumstances
3. We should never use opera-specific terms for non-opera singers

• What triggered the ANI discussion was when it was discovered that an editor, Tribal44, has been adding vocal types and/or vocal ranges into a large number of non-classical/non-opera singer articles as a personal project. As her user page reveals, "I might as well create this page, and the reason why I add vocal ranges onto pages. I was a part-time vocal teacher for 4 years. That is why I post the ranges of the singers, with reliable sources of course. I don't do it to be annoying".

Although I truly understand and appreciate her passion, I feel it is clearly inappropriate to do this. In many of the articles, the vocal type or vocal range was not only included in the article, but in the lede of the article. In a number of cases, a singer's style (pop, rock, R&B, etc.) was even removed and replaced with their vocal type (soprano, mezzo-soprano, baritone etc.). Further, many of the sources clearly fail the reliability test.

I am strongly opposed to including voice types and especially vocal ranges in the articles of non-classical/non-opera singers (unless the singer is prominently known for having a particular voice type or vocal range and it is very reliably sourced). They most certainly should never be in the lede of an article.

For context, I have listed below some of the many articles of non-classical/non-opera singers in which the vocal type or vocal range has been inserted into the lede and/or body. There are hundreds more, so this is a very widespread issue. Each listing indicates if the vocal type/range is in the article's lede or body. Also, please note that the vocal type for each of these singers is included in the Categories box at the bottom of each of these articles.

Cher (lede): “She has a deep contralto vocal range[5] that spans 3 octaves & 3 notes, from a baritone C3 up to her head voice F6, which is above soprano C.[6]”

Rihanna (body): “Rihanna possesses a mezzo-soprano vocal range, that spans nearly three octaves. (C#3-B5)["Music Review: Rihanna A Girl Like Me". The Hair Style.][Viros, Alexandre. "Casser les voix". Vox Pop. No. 11. September–October 2009. p. 141.]”

Fiona Apple (lede): “Apple's vocal range is contralto.”

Ville Valo (lede): “Valo has a baritone vocal range, and has maintained an octave range around 4 or 5, in full voice, from F1 to F5”

Judy Garland (lede): “Described by Fred Astaire as "the greatest entertainer who ever lived" and renowned for her contralto voice,”

Tori Amos (lede): “She is a classically trained musician and possesses a mezzo-soprano vocal range.”

Katy Perry (body): “Perry has a contralto vocal range.[7]”

Marlene Dietrich (body): “Bacharach's arrangements helped to disguise Dietrich's limited vocal range – she was a contralto”

Susan Boyle (lede): “Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful mezzo-soprano voice and her plain appearance on stage.[8]”

Jennifer Hudson (lede): “Her vocal range is mezzo-soprano.[9]”

Amy Winehouse (lede/opening sentence): “Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) was an English singer and songwriter known for her deep contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz.[10][11]”

Lady Gaga (body): “Vocally, Gaga possesses the range of a contralto and exhibits "overwhelming expression, instinctive vocal phrasing, '80s rock reminiscent chest belts and animalistic vocal ticks" while being able to move through 2.7 octaves.[12][13]”

Sara Bareilles (body): “Bareilles's vocal range registers from contralto to mezzo-soprano, and is often compared to artists such as Regina Spektor, Fiona Apple, Billy Joel, due to her vocal ability and incorporation of piano in her music.”

Lisa Gerrard (body): “Gerrard possesses the vocal range of a contralto, spanning from E3-F5. Her voice has been described as rich, deep, dark, mournful and unique. She also has the ability to extend upwards into the dramatic mezzo-soprano range, examples of such would be on the songs The Host of Seraphim, Elegy, Space Weaver, Come This Way and One Perfect Sunrise. Gerrard however performs more predominantly in the dramatic contralto range in her other songs, Sanvean, Sacrifice, Largo and Not Yet.”

Anne Nurmi (lede): “Anne is a contralto singer. ”

Tarja Turunen (lede): “She is a full lyric soprano and has a vocal range of three octaves.”

Michael McDonald (singer) (lede): “McDonald is known for a soulful baritone singing style and a multi-octave range.”

Britney Spears (body): “Spears possesses a soprano[20] vocal range”

Pat Benatar (lede): “She is a mezzo-soprano.” (no sources)

Alicia Keys (body): “Keys has a vocal range of a contralto, which spans three octaves.[21][22] She can sing from B flat over an octave below middle C (B♭2) to B below soprano C (B5).”

Beyoncé Knowles (body): “Knowles possesses a mezzo-soprano[23] vocal range that spans more than three octaves.”

Enya (body): “Enya's vocal range is mezzo-soprano. In "Cursum Perficio" of the album Watermark, Enya reaches a C an octave below middle C. Later in the piece, she sings a high A-flat above the treble clef.”

Grace Slick (lede): “Slick was an important figure in the 1960s psychedelic rock movement, known for her witty lyrics and powerful contralto vocals.” (no sources)

These are just a few of the articles in which the voice type and/or vocal range were removed: Peggy Lee, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Joss Stone, Faith Hill, Annie Lennox, Adele, Mýa, Rick Astley. There are many, many more.

Ran across this after seeing some odd additions to scandinavian metal band members profiles. Then saw it was across a whole swathe of inappropriate artists. I started taking a look this morning but stopped once I picked up there was a discussion here - vocal range is irrelevant to pretty much all singers apart from opera/classical. But beyond that, a lot of them are really poorly sourced additions. Blogs, one-off mentions by music columnists to their 'contralto' voice etc. Its not something that is remotely relevant to a pop singer. I tend to agree. Re 76.189.121.57's question... I don't think it's possible to make a blanket statement that some mention of the singer's vocal range/voice type is never appropriate. Amy Winehouse's contralto has been quite widely noted, but it is important that it be supported by really good quality sources. Where there is very little mention of a singer's voice type, it should definitely not be presented as a "fact" in Wikipedia's voice as is the case in virtually all of the above examples. Taking Tori Amos as an example, better to say something like: Rolling Stone once described her voice as "an attention-grabbing mezzo-soprano." Not: She possesses a mezzo-soprano vocal range. A lot of the stuff written in reviews of non-classical singers, even in reputable sources like Rolling Stone or the New York Times refers primarily to the critic's one-off personal (and not necessarily accurate) perception. If the source is the singer herself, then she should be quoted exactly rather than 'interpreting' or extrapolating from her comments. Generally speaking though, the harder you have search for a good quality independent reference for these kinds of statements, and the more you have to resort to the singer answering questions from her fans on her blog, the less likely her particular voice type is of any real relevance at all.Voceditenore (talk) 12:01, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

A further point which I did leave in an edit summary on one of the ones I looked at - a regular music columnist should be able to accurately tell the difference between most vocal ranges. I have no problem with this, but from the sources they usually say 'so and so's soprano singing' - this is not a statement of the singers range, this is a statement that they were singing at that time and place within a range. Not that it comprises the singers entire range. There is a reason this is important for opera/classical singers. I dont have excessively strong feelings on this, (to the extent of edit-warring about it) but I was quite prepared to go through any/all artists removing the poorly sourced additions outright. I am usually quite lenient with sourcing, but some of them were just dire. Coupled with the complete irrelevance to a swedish death metal vocalist... Just a heads up: For quite some time there has been vandalism from Italian IPs messing with municipalities/towns ect declaring all sorts of fake mergers. The MO seems to have shifted and it now includes messing with band memberships. Gang, it appears this WikiProject is so inactive that Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians/Assessment has numerous requests for article assessment backlogged all the way to 2008! I have left a note regarding that fact on the talkpage there, and I think we should discuss deleting it. In brief, it looks bad for the WikiProject and Wikipedia as a whole. Unneeded italic title

Redundant content/fork

I'm having a disagreement with an editor at Talk:The Weeknd#Music... over whether an addition is trivial or not to a musician BLP article. Should the editor's addition of a song accolade and description be distributed to the associated album article, House of Balloons, or the recording artist's article, The Weeknd, where it doesnt seem to have any biographical relevance (in my opinion)? Proposed WikiProjects

I have proposed the creation of two new WikiProjects dedicated to improving articles related to Christina Aguilera (proposal) and Nicki Minaj (proposal). Both artists have several articles related to their work on Wikipedia, though few have GA status. Navbox musical artist

I'd like to recommend that when musical artist's who have navigation boxes using {{Navbox musical artist}} and they are split into separate songs or singles navboxes, they should use the same background color as defined by Template:Navbox musical artist#Parameters. So, as one might expect, {{Bon Jovi}} and {{Bon Jovi songs}} both use background color for "group_or_band", while {{Kylie Minogue}} and {{Kylie Minogue singles}} use background color for "solo_singer". However, more recent navboxes have been created for artist's songs, such as {{Katy Perry songs}} using the generic {{Navbox}} template and the creators of these templates apparently don't want to use the musical artist template that to me seems perfectly appropriate. Band members

I have a continuing problem with the presentation of band members in the "infoboxes" that are displayed prominently at the top of articles. Too often, the "current members" list relates to an incarnation several generations down the line that, with respect, no one cares too much about, and there is no clear indication of the "important" lineup(s). For example, I've just been looking at Slade. With the greatest respect to John Berry and Mal McNulty, who are they? The format of these infoboxes needs to change to give an opportunity for the "important" members to be listed together -- in this case, Hill, Powell, Holder and Lee -- under whatever heading is deemed appropriate. I was asked by Paul A to to contact this group regarding getting the notability guideline for biographies remark removed from the Van Howard page. If you'll read the last few items on the Van Howard talk page, you will see the questions and Paul A's response.

Here's the item in question: The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's notability guideline for biographies (according to the Wiki Criteria for musicians and ensembles, Item #6: "6. Is an ensemble which contains two or more independently notable musicians, or is a musician who has been a member of two or more independently notable ensembles." Van played with the Louisiana Hayride which featured notable musicians such as Hank Williams, Red Sovine, Lefty Frizzel, and others. Van also played with Ray Price's Cherokee Cowboys. Other notable musicians that Van played with are detailed on the Early Life and Career section of the Wiki Van Howard page. Hello. I first came across this article by chance when it was subject to vandalism by an editor who also interfered with something on my watchlist, and have from time to time reverted more vandalism by the same editor(s). But then today I actually read the thing, and was wondering whether it should be there at all. The only links are to someone's five-year-old blog post and to the subject's own website, and the content of the article is a verbatim copy of the front page of his site (don't know if we copied him, or he copied us). I'm not well enough (or at all) acquainted with the notability guidelines for musicians to judge Mr Gregson's notability, but I'd be grateful if someone could have a look at it, and see if it just needs a cleanup and some independent sourcing, or if it should be a candidate for deletion. When is the right time to add genres to a relatively new artists info box? We are having an interesting debate about music genres on the Misha B MUSIC GENRES Misha B is a UK rapper and Singer, with 3 Official Commercial releases, 2 Mix Tapes, 2 Freestyles, and a dozen covers on Youtube). But no album yet. If you are interested please join the discussion.

Both parties of the current discussion agree that her genres should include:

• Contemporary R&B (def Do You Think of Me + "Ugly Love" & "Silent Cry" from "Knock Knock" + her duets "Ride or Die" & "Floodgates Part 2" covers like "Girl on Fire", "Diamonds" )

• Hip hop music or Rap ( Freestyles F64 & MishStyle, her covers of Drake's "Started from the Bottom", Jay Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" and her Rap breaks on X factor "Respect", "Rolling In The Deep", "Girls Wanna have Fun).

Beyond that I would add

• Reggae fusion based on the fact that 2 of her 3 singles include Drum & Bass (Home Run, Here's to Everything (Ooh La La)) elements, plus Dancehall (on Home Run) and Dub Step (on Here's to Everything (Ooh La La)) and other genres.

But the other regular and more experienced/talented editor disagrees. She does not rule it out, saying that we should not confuse individual song genres with artists genres & that it's just not evident yet.

Possibly Pop and Dance-pop could be added too, but my main co editor is concerned that would be too many genres Bodney (talk) 22:19, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

When is it appropriate to add anything to a Wikipedia article? When you have reliable sources backing it up. If the preponderance of reliable sources about the artist describes her as a "hip hop" artist (or whatever the case is), that's what you should add as a genre. Language Categories for Singers

I just left the following note on the talk page for the Indian singer Asha Bhosle, and thought it would be of interest to this Project:

I just counted and found that this article has been place in NINE Language Categories (which doesn't even include the related categories for playback singer ethnicity). That's a really outlandish number! It seems to me that these categories should be limited to her primary languages, rather than including every language she has ever sung or recorded a few songs in. After all, in this day and age, singers everywhere on the planet are likely to sing or record in any number of languages on occasion. It just isn't meaningful in terms of categorization.

Can anybody tell me if this issue has been discussed here, and what sort of conclusions (if any) were reached? Cgingold (talk) 16:37, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Proposal to revamp the genre field in the infobox

Two weeks ago, I opened a discussion at Template talk:Infobox musical artist#Proposal to revamp the genre field. So far, the proposal has slowly been gaining some support, though editors differ in exactly how it should be implemented. If the proposal does pass and is implemented, it will effect ALL musician articles, so I think there should definitely be more people involved in the discussion. Thanks. GA reviewers needed

The Good Article project has a bit of a backlog in popular music; out of the five oldest nominations on the project right now, for example, all five are popular music-related. Unfortunately, this is an area where WP:GAN always gets more editors interested in nominating than in reviewing. Would anyone be willing to review an article or two to help reduce the wait? Johnny Cash

Extra eyes are needed on the Johnny Cash article, as Opus88888 has taken it upon himself to repeatedly blank out the referenced claim that Cash is "one of the most important artists of the 20th century", simply because Opus regards this as "exaggeration". CHANGE OF INFOBOX MUSICAL ARTIST TO INFOBOX PERSON

Hi all,

I'm hoping to gain editorial consenus or opinions on creating a hybrid of Infobox person/musical artist (e.g. Hilary Duff, Ciara, Fergie) for each musical artist. You can incorporate a lot more information about their life in such a format- it strikes a fine balance between both musical career and personal life (of which I am sure most people would be more interested in). There must be more information in that infobox than just about their musical career. Its purpose is to be a summary of their life as wellas their musical career, and I feel like the infobox musical artist template simply is not efficient enough in this respect.

Opinions and discussions in regards to this will be greatly appreciated- whether on this page or on my talk page :) Feel free to contribute and/or "second the motion".

While Clara Schumann has an infobox her husband Robert Schumann does not; neither do Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Johannes Brahms or Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

• If there is an infobox for composers, please send me the link.
• If there isn't, is there a reason why not?
• If it's an oversight, would somebody with more wiki-programming savvy than me {I know: I} like to create a decent one?

Hi my name is Spike Wilde. I am a musician and just started getting somewhere with it. Im not sure who to speak to or ask about getting a write up/page/artic or some what on wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a social networking site; it's purpose is to spread encyclopedic material. If a performer or a band achieve notability by reliable sources, anyone can then create an article. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.
