these two google pages are already, I believe, monitored by bots for automatic removal. and this has been mostly effective. the user, however, has continued to attempt other methods of self promotion: recently recreating an article (see below) and other edits, plus account creation and ip editing to avoid scrutiny. requesting user accounts be blocked for spamming. - Owlmonkey (talk) 15:46, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    URLs

The links have been getting posted to a half-dozen or more articles in an aparent attempt to promote/advertise the website involved. Given the username doing this is the same name shown as the host of the Art of the Drink video podcast, I believe that a COI issue is also likely.

On a secondary issue, it appears that the Art of the Drink article is basically a web-directory at this stage ... I was considering cleaning it up, but it's so convoluted that I was unsure where to start - any suggestions/pointers? Should the ELs embedded within the article just be converted to plain text without the links - or is it better to take the time to convert to internal wiki-links and ref tags wherever possible? --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:05, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this one. It may well need listing in due course. Reviewing it in the cold light of day I reckon that indef blocks for the named users (they only placed links after all) and spam4im for the IPs would not be a retrograde step. It would surprise me if this continued - at least the IPs can be blocked if they continue. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 16:43, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Links to this site have been added to various articles as references by Supplements (talk · contribs). To me, the links seem to contain useful information, but that info is copied from other sources (for example, from a press release) and framed within product catalog links and other obviously promotional stuff. The user Supplements also acknowledges on his userpage being the owner of the company, so there are conflict of interest issues too. I believe the user is being helpful to Wikipedia with plenty of constructive edits, and he is being transparent about his connection to the site he is adding external links to. But it seems that his contributions come with the promotion of self-interests as well. I'd just like someone else to take a look and see what they think and advise on what, if anything, should be done. Deli nk (talk) 16:37, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    populardata.com

Complaint originally filed at: Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/PopularData‎ , please see discussion therein.

To summarize: User 65.182.233.93 has been downright insistent on having a ZIP code database obtainable from populardata.com included as an external link on the ZIP Code and Canadian postal code articles. When the user registered, it selected the name PopularData, and has admitted being the creator of the databases obtainable from populardata.com. The user, both logged in and out, has several times added the link. See [5] as an example. The role of 72.11.123.50 is less clear, but that user, who has been editing for nearly eight months, chooses only to edit to add (or support adding) the populardata.com

Now, to their (assuming there is a "they") credit, at long last, they seem to have gotten the message that this wasn't the way to go about things, and to have a discussion on talk page. This followed somewhat abusive comments from both users.[6][7] At the suggestion of EdJohnston, I've brought the discussion of the sockpuppet issue over here, so that the possibly improper spamming issue can be dealt with. I don't know if you want to take any action, or just hope they've gotten the message.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:36, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
