The new DCU is NOT a "soft" reboot

[edit]

Some Wikipedia editors insist on retaining the "soft reboot" label. That is simply not true. A soft reboot is a reboot that shares some continuity with the original series. James Gunn confirms that the new universe does not share any continuity. We must consider this to be a full/complete reboot. Saying it is a soft reboot is just blatantly dishonest.

As per this Forbes Magazine article, the upcoming DCU is a new universe.

As per this Screen Rant article, nothing in previous DC movies or shows is canon.

As per this ComicBook.com article, only a few cast members will reprise their roles in this newly created universe.

Gunn has confirmed that some cast members are reprising their role from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, and some of the events of those projects are taken as having happened (for example, Creature Commandos takes place after the events of Peacemaker season 1). So it is not a full reboot, and this is supported by sources in the article. Nothing in the sources that you have provided contradicts this. Please do not add your changes to the article again as you have done multiple times now, you must gain new consensus in this discussion before restoring the changes. - adamstom97 (talk) 20:02, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be best to list the projects that maintain some continuity with the DCU, when we have confirmation that they, in fact, do? This may help some realize why it's classified as a soft reboot, despite a very clear change from the DCEU. Brayden8881 (talk) 20:14, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No. Because as Gunn has said... NOTHING is canon. Nothing. ScottSullivan01 (talk) 21:14, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the events will be the same, but Gunn has been adamant that nothing before Creature Commandos is canon, not even Peacemaker season one. Retaining some actors and recycling story threads might cross the threshold for the reboot to be considered "soft" though. Prefall 20:15, 9 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Waiting for a showrunner confirmation

[edit]

This is more of a website-wode thimg, but I was thinking tgat, for the series, maybe we should wait until somebody is explicitly referred to as a series' showrunner by an official source instead of just assuming whoever writes the show is the showrunner, like what happened with Creature Commandos. BestDaysofMusic (talk) 11:01, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All of the showrunners listed are sourced to be in those roles, just as Gunn was until we knew that was no longer the case. It's not like we're assuming the writer is the showrunner. For instance, Lanterns has three different main writers but only one of them is the showrunner. Trailblazer101 (talk) 15:54, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are we sure?

[edit]

The articles about the Bane/Deathstroke and Sgt. Rock movies don't mention anything about them beimg DCU movies, so how can we be sure they are part of the DCU? Shouldn't we wait until an official source refers to them as DCU movies? BestDaysofMusic (talk) 22:53, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Sgt. Rock article from Deadline explicitly mentions it is part of DC Studios' slate that begins with Superman. As for the Bane/Deathstroke film and any others, we can not presume these films won't be DCU films just as we would not assume any new Marvel Studios is not in its MCU franchise. The DCU is DC Studios' main franchise, and it has typically been clarified what is in that franchise and what is not (ie. Elseworlds). We can also use common sense and logic when it comes to these, just as why we don't list Dynamic Duo in this article because it clearly won't be part of this franchise based on what we know. Trailblazer101 (talk) 23:34, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was previously discussed at Talk:DC Universe (franchise)/Archive 1#Blue Beetle is not confirmed to be a DCU series, we have sources to confirm that most things being developed by DC Studios are all part of the DCU and only special projects like Dynamic Duo or things that have been explicitly labeled Elseworlds should be automatically left off this page. - adamstom97 (talk) 09:51, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why the reversion?

[edit]

@Adamstom.97 So are we to assume that this franchise is not following the structure of the MCU? Why was DC Studios even created if you are going to focus on Gunn and Safran, the latter of whom has had no input whatsoever since he was hired. And the caption was removed for the very obvious reason that the image clearly is a logo for DC Studios and not DC Comics or DC Entertainment. And what formatting or bold changes are you talking about? - Ash wki (talk) 09:47, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The whole edit was WP:BOLD, you completely changed the structure/format of the lead without discussion. In any established article with active editors you can expect to get pushback on a change like that. You re-wrote the lead so it focused more on the MCU than on the people who are making this franchise, which would only be appropriate if that is what the rest of the article did. But it does not, there is one paragraph where some comparisons are made to the MCU but otherwise it is not discussed throughout the whole article. Similarly, discussion about the making of the DCU in this article focuses almost entirely on Gunn and Safran so that is what the lead should do as well (not sure why you think Safran has had "no input whatsoever since he was hired", he is literally producing all the projects with Gunn). The reason we have a caption for the logo is not because it is unclear what the logo is, it is because this is an article about the DCU and the image is for DC Studios so it is useful to clarify why it is being used. - adamstom97 (talk) 11:53, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Adamstom.97 The article is titled "DC Universe", not "Gunn Universe". Why is the article then focusing on Gunn instead of DC Studios? Also my rewritten lead is no way focused on the MCU. I only drew a very legit comparison with the MCU based on a very obvious similarity. The decision of dividing the universe into "chapters" is clearly mimicking the MCU style of "phases". In regards to Safran, just having a producer credit doesn't mean the man is actively involved. Nothing has been heard so far of his opinions or contributions regarding the franchise. - Ash wki (talk) 18:48, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The lead needs to reflect the contents of the article with WP:DUEWEIGHT. Anyone who actually reads this article would agree that Gunn is the main driver of everything included here. Trying to downplay his involvement in the lead is clearly wrong. Your personal opinion on what the article should be focused on is irrelevant. As for Safran, he does not need to give public interviews to prove that he is working on the franchise. He is co-CEO of DC Studios with Gunn and is producing all the projects with him, so again his role should not be downplayed. - adamstom97 (talk) 19:20, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
