Proposal: Notability guideline for club seasons in association football
[edit]Hello all. As many of you are aware the notability of season articles for individual football clubs are often contentious. Many users cite WP:NSEASONS as both a reason to keep or delete an article. The users citing NSEASONS !voting delete often say that only teams in a fully pro league should have season articles. Users !voting keep often argue that NSEASONS does not mention association football so is irrelevant to football club seasons. Others will use WP:GNG to back-up their case but users (on all sides) often debate over what is a routine source and what is not. Their are many examples of WP:AFDs of this kind. Here is a list of some I have found. Feel free to add any I have missed. They are ordered in reverse chronological order (i.e. newest at the top) by the date the AFD was closed. They are sorted under subheadings which was the result of the AFD.

This list is incomplete and doesn't include any nominations open on or after approximately 28 August 2016. Feel free to add any missed AfDs. There may be a few small errors with dates and the like. Feel free to correct any of them.
I'm making this proposal because their is often heated debates over whether these type of articles should be deleted or kept. Users, on both sides, often make arguments that aren't backed up by policy. I think to cool this ongoing dispute we should create a WP:NFOOTYSEASONS that will be part of WP:NSPORTS. Of course, there will be the option to keep the status quo.
I have listed a neutral notice at WT:FOOTY, WT:NSPORTS and may list at WP:CENT. I have also listed a neutral notice on the talk pages of users who have recently been heavily involved in this issue (on all sides).

- Guidelines
- Please !vote for your preferred option. The result will not be based entirely on a vote count but more on the principle of consensus.
- Please only !vote in one section.
- If you have a proposal, list it using the same format I have used. I have put two empty options that can be filled and more can be added if necessary.
Option 1
[edit]- The new guideline should recommend that only clubs playing in a fully professional league (in that particular year) should have an article detailing an individual season. Clubs not playing in a fully professional league shouldn't have individual season articles unless they can be shown to meet the wider requirements of WP:GNG.

- I personally think that Option 1 is the best option. - Yellow Dingo (talk) 04:52, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
Option 2
[edit]- No change should be made to WP:NSPORTS and, therefore, no subject notability guideline established. (no change).

Option 3
[edit]- There should be no inherent notability. No club at any level should have an article detailing a particular season unless it can be shown to meet WP:GNG.
