Deletion review for Kady Malloy

Notable absences

[edit]

Not only were the Memphis tornadoes on Super Tuesday very near downtown, but another near miss that few will ever know was Nashville. The supercell produced large intense tornadoes that killed multiple people both before and after passing directly over Nashville, but during that time the mesocyclone was phasing and in the non-tornado portion of the cycle. A few more miles/minutes and a modern catastrophe paralleled only by Katrina might have occurred. Evolauxia (talk) 18:47, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Templates

[edit]

Now that {{StormWatch}} got deleted, I think the best way to do it will be to use {{Current disaster|event=tornado outbreak|time=potential|link=no}}.

As for the watches, I think the best way to do it would be a bulleted list at the top of the section. -CWY2190(talkcontributions) 21:28, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article Mid-October 2007 tornado outbreak you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Mid-October 2007 tornado outbreak for things needed to be addressed. I've been working on the Tropical cyclone WikiProject for almost four years now and I know that at times it can be pretty draining. Hurricanehink and I started a fun little thing two years ago called the Hurricane Hall of Fame (based on a concept I'd created much earlier). It works just like any other Hall of Fame: every year, five storms are voted in based on notability. Up until now, the voters were just me and Hink and the honorees were just Atlantic storms. Both of those are changing (hopefully). I'm trying to get more Project members involved in the voting and I'm going international this year. This ballot is for the Eastern Pacific. Following this election, I'll send out ballots for the Western Pacific and then perhaps the Indian Ocean...all leading up to the Atlantic ballot early this summer. I'd really appreciate your participation. It's just for fun; something to lower stress levels. I'll announce the winners next weekend. The nominees are...

  • 1939 Long Beach Tropical Storm - Only tropical storm to make landfall in California in the 20th Century, killed in excess of 40 people at sea and in floods.
  • 1959 Mexico Hurricane - deadliest Eastern Pacific storm in history, 1000-1800 dead.
  • Hurricane Tara - killed over 500 people in floods in central Mexico.
  • Hurricane Liza - over 600 people were killed in devastating floods in Baja California.
  • Hurricane Paul - slow-moving storm left over 1000 dead in Central America.
  • Hurricane Iniki - most damaging hurricane in Hawaii's history, causing $2.6 billion in uninflated damage.
  • Hurricane John - longest lived tropical cyclone ever recorded worldwide; 31 days.
  • Hurricane Ismael - caused devastating flooding that killed 116 people in Mexico.
  • Hurricane Linda - strongest Eastern Pacific storm ever recorded.
  • Hurricane Pauline - devastated Mexico, killing 230 people and causing $7.5 billion in damage.
  • Choose three of these that you most want in. Post your votes on my talk page. The five top vote-getters will be inducted.

Tornado intensities

[edit]

I've been trying to figure out how you get the EF intensities of all the tornadoes this year yet on the SPC page many don't show up. If you could show me where you get that information I'll gladly begin the List of US Tornadoes of 2008 article. That's really the only thing holding me back from helping you with that idea. Thanks, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 18:12, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, that'll be fun. Thanks again, Cyclonebiskit (talk) 21:06, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If it's not a problem, can you give me the information you've gathered on the tornadoes since march? I'd greatly appreciate it so I can keep up with the "List of US tornadoes of 2008" article, which is not close to being up to date. You don't have to if it's too much trouble, I'll wait the extra 3-4 months to get the final info out. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 22:20, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Barnstar
I've watched what you've been doing in regards to the article May 2008 Plains tornado outbreak, and I'm thoroughly impressed! I know that you've been working hard (and so have other editors) to make the article accurate, detailed, reliable, sourced, and complete, and your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Seeing as that particular tornadic outbreak went within 2 miles of my own house, and seeing as I watched the unnerving wall cloud from my own basement window, I very much appreciate what you do for Wikipedia to keep it accurate, timely, and informed. Again, thanks, and happy editing! Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:27, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Koppen climate classification

[edit]

The Koppen climate classification uses -3C/26.6F as the cfa/dfa line. Let me guess- you use 0C/32F as the borderline because of Cape Cod. The cfb climate should be called oceanic climate. Marine West Coast Climate doesn't exist. Anyway, are Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Mediterranean? No, but they have a Mediterranean climate. I also investigated some bird range maps recently and they tend to follow the 26.6F line over the 32F line. Of course, this was just an investigation of a few birds so don't take this so seriously. I see you restored linked dates at Hurricane Gustav (2008). I had removed them because there is inconsistency in date-linking in the article and, per WP:DATE#Date autoformatting, date autoformatting (linking) is deprecated. Upgraded infobox for image sizes or captions

[edit]

29-Aug-2008: I have upgraded Template:Infobox_hurricane_current to use the more modern technology for infoboxes, to also allow image sizes/captions:

  • changed "class=toccolours" to be "class=infobox";
  • added new parameter "image_width" for "image" parameter;
  • added new parameter "track_width" for "track" parameter;
  • added new parameter "image_caption" for "image" parameter;
  • added new parameter "track_caption" for "track" parameter;
  • set default minimum box width as "280";
  • put internal comments, to explain coding as NOTES & HISTORY.

Hopefully, the parameter track_width will help to make the forecast-map somewhat larger than the previous mandatory postage-stamp size. The infobox had been created back on 13July2006 when "class=toccolours" was used in many infoboxes. As customary, I have spent hours testing the changes (with both Firefox & IE browsers), in a separate user-space template, before releasing the changes to the live infobox template. -Wikid77 (talk) 05:53, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning your deletion of my edits

[edit]

You removed my edit of the article Hurricane Ike. I don't know how it is not clear to you that what I added IS directly related to Canada.

From the article:

"Peter Boag, president of the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute, told CTV Newsnet that the spike in gas prices is due primarily to the bad weather in the Gulf Coast."

"The price hikes we're seeing and the price movements we're seeing over the short period of time are due to (the) supply disruption caused by the impending arrival of Hurricane Ike," he said."

Splitting Ike article will be slow

[edit]

20-Sep-2008: I agree with you that the Hurricane Ike information will grow, especially after the notoriety sets in, when everyone will be saying, "Ike caused that too" and such. People visiting the Caribbean will also document more details about the infamous storm, such as local ships that sank or other details. It wasn't me creating the names "Giant Ike" or "Colossal Ike" because the sources I read described Ike as "twice the size of Katrina". The boardwalks in Galveston where found washed along the shoreline 3 blocks to the west, but at the back of the storm, the winds would switch to the east, washing people out to sea towards Florida (although oil rigs are out there, 20 miles out). Several blogs/forums are asking about hundreds of missing people. From that infamy, Ike news webpages will remain on the Internet for months, as future reference documents. Hence, many other people will help expand these webpages as time passes. Thanks for seeing the true impact, and rest assured that many people will help expand the details. -Wikid77 (talk) 03:00, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Tropical Depression Nineteen (2005), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. A tag has been placed on Andrew Garcia requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Tornadoes of 2010 - April 22

[edit]

You may want to split this off into a separate outbreak page, with 26 tornadoes reported. Even if only 15-20 of these reports confirm, I think it could survive as a standalone article due the fact more severe weather is expected tomorrow, including the risk for "strong and long track tornadoes". Per your sandbox article, can we add a column at the far right of the table linking to the specific source (using ref naming) for each tornado per this discussion? That Texas tornado occurred on the 24th, either at 145am where it happened or 645 UTC...whichever you go by, it should be under the April 24th tornadoes. Remember that the SPC's storm reports go 12Z-12Z (7am-7am Central time), not midnight to midnight, so events after midnight need to be placed under the following day's events in our articles. Someone beat you to creating this, so I went ahead and added your sandbox material to the article. Also, keep an eye on Arkansas especially today, as the SPC pretty much maxed out the probablilities in a PDS watch for the area. I suggest (if you have the time) monitoring this media outlet, as yesterday they put up a live video stream of their severe weather coverage once the stuff got rolling. Hurricane Michael (2000)

[edit]

Hi CrazyC83, I don't think we have talked before. Well anyway, you are a major contributor to Hurricane Michael (2000), so you can participate in the FAC of Hurricane Michael (2000). Thank you, --12george1 (talk) 15:03, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

May 2010 Oklahoma tornado outbreak

[edit]

May 2010 Oklahoma tornado outbreak seems to be a bit hyperactive in how long the tornado outbreak is claimed to have continued. I'm pretty sure it was only May 10-12 for the first weather system, so unless the 13-15 were active enough to call it a tornado outbreak sequence, I would say they aren't a part of this outbreak. As far as I know, the 10th was the first day of the outbreak, the 11th a day of minimal activity, the 12th was activity when the system was lifting back north as a warm front/dry line, and then the system pushed east and stopped producing tornadoes. June Outbreak

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Verify edit

[edit]

You might want to take a look at this edit and verify it...I reverted the same editor adding 53 EF0's to the Mid-June outbreak's small chart, but I'm not involved enough with Tornadoes of 2010 to tell whether this edit is good or false. HI! Just wondering, do you happen to be MiamiHurricanes09 on wunderground.com? Thanks! TDI19 (talk) 21:54, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK! Thanks! :D TDI19 (talk) 21:58, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm not MH09. I'm one of his friends, however. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by TropicalAnalystwx13 (talkcontribs) 19:15, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Storm data is out for all the outbreaks listed on this page, and for at least April-May 2010 tornado outbreak, the tornado table is way off. Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. 14:53, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That edit by me that changed the tornado totals was based off the NCDC Storm Events Database...did I get the totals wrong when I looked it up or something? Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. 01:21, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar for Igor

[edit]
The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar
I hereby award you this barnstar for helping the Hurricane Igor article to be of its current quality, which is impressive considering the article's short existence. Well done. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:03, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The only problem is, the 2 main RBT's don't have it. Thegreatdr (talk · contribs) said in Talk:2010 AHS that "If all else fails, ask yourself who the primary source for such information in the Atlantic basin is. The answer will come to you quickly. I would imagine this would be a rare event, since all that NRL stuff is driven by NHC information, at least I thought it was." So, my thinking is until the NHC changes the GE BT (which is the one they update now, apparently), then we should stay with the advisory info. Darren23Edits|Mail 20:59, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

October 24th in Tornadoes of 2010

[edit]

I'm not entirely sure, but wasn't the storm system that spawned the tornadoes October 24th in the south a separate storm system from the one presently spawning damaging winds and tornadoes? I was under the impression that the storms on the 24th were spawned by one system that went off elsewhere, and the current ones were spawned by a system that just ejected east across the plains yesterday. If so, would it be wise to split off the 24th from the section for the 24th-26th? SophiaBLiu's Research Request

[edit]

My name is Sophia and I am a PhD student at University of Colorado in Boulder researching the use of social media for historically significant crises like Hurricane Katrina. I am interested in what kind of values and practices are emerging from these disasters especially with the use of ubiquitous technologies like blogs and social media sites like Wikipedia. I am contacting you because I noticed you are one of the top contributors of the Hurricane Katrina Wikipedia article. I was wondering if you would be open to answering some questions for my dissertation research on this topic. One example of a question I have is: You provided a considerable amount of edits to the Hurricane Katrina Wikipedia article. What kind of edits did you make? What story was being told before you edited the article and how does that differ from what is in Wikipedia now? Feel free to email me at Sophia.Liu@colorado.edu if you have any questions. Thanks for your time, Sophia --Sophiabliu (talk) 05:42, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering, why do you keep removing the European tornadoes? Although I don't put much information into the bits, there is a lot more available for them. I only put the single sentence just so their existence is known and others can improve upon it from there. The recent Portuguese tornado, which injured 42 people, definitely deserves note on the article at the least. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 02:45, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
