WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 21:10, 10 November 2023 (UTC)AfC notification: Draft:R. H. Isabelle has a new comment
- @FloridaArmy: I wanted to reply to your comment here (looks like I failed to see it due to a malformed ping). As I said in my initial comment, please consider doing the job of cleaning your submissions. There was, until the current drive, a massive backlog. Doing anything to expedite the process is considered a courtesy. Using hidden text maximizes your chances that a draft will be approved. Additionally, you have been creating drafts for a very long time and should consider adding page numbers a standard component of referencing. ~ Pbritti (talk) 21:58, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Pbritti the comments at the top should never prohibit accepting a draft. FloridaArmy almost always creates the redirects/hatnotes/adding to dabs then removes the comment. When I am reviewing I do that work because its in the best interest of readers but of course that is my choice. I totally agree with adding page numbers as there have been countless times the URL does not link to the appropriate page so I have to search and if its trouble for me (and other reviewers) that means it much more of an issue for readers who may not know how to find the information. S0091 (talk) 22:13, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- @S0091: I never prohibited the approval of this draft for any reason—I noted that a malformed ping meant that I only noticed the reply to my comment after approval had gone through. I just wanted to continue the conversation for the exact same reason you mention here: page numbers are of concern. The approval is not an issue, but more that I was surprised and felt bad that I didn't reply to FA's comment in a timely manner due to a typo. ~ Pbritti (talk) 22:18, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- @S0091: Rereading your reply; due you mean
comments
as in the notes regarding dabs/redirects? I readcomments
to mean AfC procedural comments. If so, ignore the first half of my last statement. If that's what you meant, apologies. While they aren't prohibiting approval, they slow it down. I added my comment to that draft to note to FA that this is an issue in reviewing their drafts, but I didn't decline their draft (why would I, as the subject clearly passed GNG if the material was indeed verifiable). ~ Pbritti (talk) 22:22, 10 November 2023 (UTC)- Thank you guys for reviewing. The redirect notes are important and I want them to be visible. The other notes it's more convenient for me not to template them and I (or any editor) can remove them. I like to keep things simple. I apologize that sometimes my quest for aimplicity complicates matters or goes against various standards. Page numbers are great. For many good books the search feature is pretty handy. Does the citeref software not have page nimber capability? Hmmm. I will reflect and see if I can do a better job including adding page numbers. I have a lot fo trouble with the cite templates but I can see what I can do as I do use google books a lot. Thanks again. FloridaArmy (talk) 22:29, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- The vast majority of your refs could be done super duper easy with Visual Editor using the Automatic function (the default option and what I use almost exclusively for refs). Input the URL (even for GBooks, JSTOR, Newspapers.com), click Generate (which formats it) then insert. I do have to back in to add the specific page numbers for GBooks and JSTOR (Newspapers is auto) but all the parameters are there and with a handy search function for a specific parameter (I search "page", then add the page numbers). - One other thought: I am not convinced William Cicero Allen established Scotland Neck Military Academy. The military academy there seems to date to 1809? Did he re-establish it? Establish the girls academy? See Draft:Vine Hill Academy. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:14, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- I will take a look. I am working on Lillian Day (Draft:Lillian Day) right now. Rublamb (talk) 17:22, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- The first mention of "Scotland Neck Military Academy" in Newspapers.com is in 1891. Looking at footnote #5 in Draft:Vine Hill Academy, page 359 lists them both as "accepted schools" so they appear to be unrelated (search for "Scotland Neck"). S0091 (talk) 17:37, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also, you might want to archive some stuff on your talk FA. It takes a few seconds to post comments (some chuggin"). S0091 (talk) 17:39, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

- @FloridaArmy doing a google I find only sources for it starting in 1891 and a newspapers.com search also has the earliest hit for 1891. this is the oldest hot for "Scotland Neck Military Academy". There appear to be references to other Academies at Scotland Neck before that. this would back the 1891 founding. KylieTastic (talk) 17:39, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- And this published in 1893 says its beginning its third year. S0091 (talk) 17:46, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- I am see references to Vine Hill as "Vine Hill Female Academy" in 1894 (i.e. "there are two schools Vine Hill Female Academy and Scotland Neck Military Academy.") S0091 (talk) 17:53, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

- I have yet to find a source that says he founded the school. None of the ads I found say that. aAlso, if it was his school, did it close when he left? I didn't find articles indicating that it closed, but also no ads after he left. I think for now, it is best to remove that content from the article. I am going to copy this discussion to the article's talk page for future reference. Rublamb (talk) 00:42, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

I try to figure more but usually like another Bart I figure less. And especially after snacking I am no figurine, just nap needing. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:51, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks for reviewing it User:Ca! What makes it notable for me is its 1830s establishment by an act ofnthe state legislature, notable alumni and principal, funding issues that do get quite a bit of coverage in the sources including the reprinting of the "Memorial" rhe school sent to the legislature. These issues go to the very nature of government aupport for schools and how to fund them. To top is all off you have the Presbytery putting the school's principal on trial for his permissive teachings about a man marrying his sister-in-law if his wife dies, students in attendance at the hearings. I think it needs expansion not languishing in drafspace, but hopefully we can bring it to light and expand it going forward. How long did it last? As is noted at the top it appears to have transitioned with some names and evolutions unless I am fudging different schools together. Again I think it needs more attention and expansion. Those are my thoughts. FloridaArmy (talk) 23:16, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I didn't know the in-depth history of the school. Is the cited book give more coverage of the school than the Google Book Snippets? If so, I will be inclined to accept. Ca talk to me! 01:25, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Qcne (talk) 14:35, 11 November 2023 (UTC)undid move of vigilance committee to Vigilant Association of Philadelphia
Please refer to the authoritative Eric Foner. The former term is accurate, the latter is just one more specific article and not identical with all vigilance committees. A "committee of vigilance" is not something different. Andre🚐 14:18, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Can you discuss please instead of doing the edits again. You're misunderstanding that vigilance committee and committee and vigilance are synonyms. Please refer to the authoritative Eric Foner. Andre🚐 14:53, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- user:Andrevan I stated my reasoning. It's also discussed on the article's talk page. You have not explained any of your reverts. You can't have an entry about violent vigilante groups and include groups that aren't violent. Problems with the scope of the article are longstanding and tagged. You insist on keeping non-violent groups in it so I have clarified the scope. Please be part of the solution and make sure to explain your edits when they are contested or undo the work of others. Thanks. FloridaArmy (talk) 15:10, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- The "violent groups" aspect is secondary and should be de-emphasized or removed. I tried to explain my revert by leaving this message here and other messages for you in other places. When someone reverts your change the best action is to slow down and discuss, not do it again. Vigilance committees are a great topic. It definitely needs expansion. Let's make sure it doesn't get confusing though. Please refer to an authoritative academic source such as Foner. Andre🚐 15:23, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Qcne (talk) 17:53, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Joseph L. Cahall
Hi FloridaArmy! I improved and moved to mainspace the draft you made on Joseph L. Cahall - I found him a fascinating subject - apparently he could have potentially been both a US Senator and US House member but declined both! And because of his declination of a Senate post, the J. Edward Addicks supporters and Henry A. du Pont supporters couldn't agree on a candidate and both of Delaware's Senate seats were vacant for two years! BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:56, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- User:BeanieFan11 I was curious what Conference Academy (Draft:Conference Academy) was and disambiguated Conference Academy. Methodist schools? The factionalism within and among parties continues. The more things change the more they stay the same. Weren't virtually all Republicans Unionist? What was the split? I didn't quite get it. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:28, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Factions in the Republican Party (United States) didn't help. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:34, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Not sure if the Conference Academy was Methodist, but I know its the predecessor to Wesley College. As for the factions, maybe I could have explained it better in the article - I included a note in the [a] at the part that read
was part of the "Union Republican" or "Addicks"[a] faction
- so, to explain, the Delaware Union Republican Party was different than the Union Republican Party of the Civil War; it was a part of the Republicans who supported J. Edward Addicks for Senate, while the "Regular Republicans" were those who supported Henry A. du Pont rather than Addicks – they could never agree on who to select for the Senate, except for Cahall who declined, and thus Delaware had no senators for several years because of the division. Do you think there's a better way to explain it in the article? BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:37, 11 November 2023 (UTC)- Was the split just in Delaware? I saw Louis E. McComas was reported to have won his primary as a "regular Republican" around the same time. The Bull Moose Party and Roosevelt split seems to have some later? The words Progressive get thrown around too. Just trying to make sense of what the split was over. Presumably it was over more than just what candidate to back? What were the issues? I saw the 17th amendment making Senators elected directly followed this period? Thanks for starting the entry. I've seen the term "bolter" used for party departers. It's a subject I've meant to come back to. I'm curious what impact Joe Manchin or any third party candidates will play in 2024. Always interesting times I guess. Thanks for your great work! FloridaArmy (talk) 17:46, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I just learned all this last night so I might not know all the ins and outs of it – but as far as I'm aware it was mainly just a Delaware split; interesting if you say that McComas from Maryland was part of one of the factions, but the state does border Delaware so the Addicks/du Pont debate could have spilled over there too. I'm sure it was more than just over the candidate to elect; it probably involved opposing opinions on different issues (though I haven't found them), but it seems candidates did play an important part. And yes, 2024 will sure be an interesting one... BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:01, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

- Does the Union Republican split go back to Ulysses S. Grant (1896 election?) and allegations of corruption? Civil service reforms followed I believe.. At the bottom of L. Irving Handy innthe election returns section Union Republican and Regular Republican candidates are identified. The links both go to Republican Party. Smh. FloridaArmy (talk) 18:00, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- According to our article on Addicks, he started trying to get into office in 1895, so it was probably around there. Maybe I should start an article on the factions... BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:03, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

- Ah, so it seems the division wasn't just over whether to elect du Pont or Addicks but over who to elect at all levels. According to 1896 Delaware gubernatorial election it seems Higgins was the nominee of the "Regular Republicans" for governor? BeanieFan11 (talk) 18:13, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- The fault lines are hard for me to discern. There were populist and fusion movements around then. Money issues (gold and silver) which I never really understood. Money supply? The rights of African Americans and their political rights played a role in some areas. I don't even see them mention vis a vis Delaware but I know Grover Cleveland dealt with Catholic immigrant animosities to African American workers. I don't know. It's interesting. Reverberations continue of course.. FloridaArmy (talk) 18:42, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Definitely interesting – Addicks was one of the most bizarre Senate stories I've ever heard of! I started drafts for each faction, I plan on working on them in the near future. BeanieFan11 (talk) 19:10, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- A rich guy trying to buy elections. And who led the other faction? A DuPont. Go figure. FloridaArmy (talk) 20:27, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

- Not sure if the Conference Academy was Methodist, but I know its the predecessor to Wesley College. As for the factions, maybe I could have explained it better in the article - I included a note in the [a] at the part that read
- Factions in the Republican Party (United States) didn't help. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:34, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 03:46, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Are you managing to clear your draft backlog?
I think we are the two biggest draft makers. I’ve been making very good progress clearing my backlog, have you done the same? Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 07:50, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- User:Immanuelle one step forward, two steps back for me. Some of your drafts pop up in my watchlist but it's not an area I can help much with I'm afraid. Take care! FloridaArmy (talk) 21:24, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Immanuelle: Have you not seen my list of drafts? It's magnificent! BD2412 T 21:34, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @BD2412 xtools tells me you have too many edits so I can't get a count of your drafts, but Immanuelle has 3.2k and FloridaArmy has over 1.4k. Do you think you beat either? See also WP:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1142#A plethora of drafts which is why I think @Immanuelle is trying to reduce theirs and likely why they are asking the question. S0091 (talk) 21:58, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @S0091 yeah I even have a scoreboard on my userpage tracking my reduction of my drafts.
- October 20, 2023: 3,946 drafts
- November 4, 2023: 3,522 drafts
- November 7, 2023: 3,500 drafts
- November 9, 2023: 3,433 drafts
- November 11, 2023: 3,423 drafts
- November 12, 2023: 3,416 drafts
- November 14, 2023: 3,405 drafts
- November 16, 2023: 3,339 drafts
- November 17, 2023: 3,296 drafts
- November 20, 2023: 3,273 drafts
- November 21, 2023: 3,256 drafts
- current progress
- I got through what feels like at least a hundred drafts after the AFC backlog started, and got my overall count down by about 700 this month Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 22:07, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- And since I know FloridaArmy has some kind of draft related editing restriction I was afraid they'd be put in the same position as me. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 22:08, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- I have never had that many at once, but I may well have started that many drafts that are now articles. Every few months I run through all my drafts and try to make at least a minimal improvement to every one of them. BD2412 T 14:22, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
