Your new tools!
Giggy, I'm really sorry about your RfA. Please don't be discouraged and keep up your excellent work. Don't lose faith. Many others have had unsuccessful RfAs, and many of them saw there an opportunity to improve, kept working and learning, and in a few months achieved a most successful second RfA. I'm sure that'll be your case as well. Meanwhile, here are your new tools (instead of the mop and bucket which will remain in the closet waiting for you). :-) Please keep in touch. You're one of my favorite users and I'm sure that the concerns raised on your RfA resulted from unfortunate mistakes or misunderstandings that occurred at a bad time. Wikipedia has just lost a good admin. Best regards, Húsönd 00:01, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Something for you.
I'm glad I did. :-) I am also glad to inform that when you feel ready for a new RfA, I am willing to nominate (or co-nominate) you again. By the way, I just had a look at your RfA analysis page and I think that you deserve something for your most commendable attitude. Best regards, Húsönd 00:12, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

I'll be sure to put strings of letters and spaces on your analysis that somehow evoke meaning in our fragile little brains, informing your brain of what it needs to do to do stuff better... or something. What? --HAL2008talk 15:29, 1 August 2007 (UTC) PS: I forgot to mention, I checked into my flight, and even though I'll be sleeping all of tomorrow, and a good deal of Friday due to jet lag, Saturday I'll be back off the bandwagon again, and editing until my hands fall off. Yay editing! Yay high speed internet! Though I wish I could stay in Britain AND have HS internet... but that's next year I suppose. --HAL2008talk 15:45, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

RE:RFA
I know Husond (and several other users) were planning on nominating me, but I just feel better nominating myself. I didn't want anyone to go through the trouble of having to nominate me. Even if it fails, it will have been a very educational experience, and I hope I can serve the community even more, regardless of the result of the RfA. Re:Boricuaeddie
He says on his userpage that he is in 8th grade, so I assume that he's 12~14. Frankly it's not his emotional or mental maturity that concerns me. I genuinely don't feel comfortable with the idea that an 8th grader would get some of the same bullshit, harassing emails that come with the mop. Keegantalk 01:56, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

AFD close?
You closed this AFD, citing WP:SNOW and I'm guessing Wikipedia:Speedy keep. Which criteria on that page did the AFD qualify under? Corpx 06:50, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

A little bit of philosophy...
"You say ABF, they say AAGF. You can't win." But you can ABF about their AAGF, or make Wikipedia:Always assume the assumption that people assume good faith.... Now you made me confused... --Dark Falls talk 09:27, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Analysis
I just thought I'd swing on by and comment on your RFA analysis. First, I think it's crap people opposed you for our little "retarded" conversation. 10-15 seconds of more research, and people could have seen it was a joke. The whole chatlog thing will blow over by your next RFA, so that can easily clear up some of the issues. Other than that, you definitely do not embody "everything wrong with Wikipedia". We all make mistakes, and we all learn from them. You're not a vandal whatsoever, and are a very good editor, and a great person to interact with around here. If I have only one suggestion, it would be to just keep doing what you like here. It has worked out to you being a good editor and user, and it will pan out into a passing RFA eventually. It's absurd some of the crap people opposed for though. Jmlk17 22:19, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
your re: to adoption question
Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment. Actually, I was adopted several months ago, back when I really did need some major help with dispute resolution and technical advice. Thanks for the help. VanTucky (talk) 22:31, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Why aren't I an admin? One, I don't want or need the power. Two, if every good user takes the mop, quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Thanks for the endorsement though. VanTucky (talk) 23:08, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Not to but in, but that is a damn fine quote :). Jmlk17 04:50, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
RfA
Yeah, I've avoided it for a while. There have been a lack of compelling candidates to comment on, and I've become a little gunshy since we've found administrators with very old sockpuppets (I never thought that would happen.) Also, RfA talk is dominated by incredible windbags. We might have the greatest administrative system ever devised but because we can sit around our computers and discuss it to death the RfA talk archives are a new War and Peace and everyone has proposed a Better Way of Doing It™. That's the only thing really wrong with RfA. :-) Grandmasterka 02:22, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

my question is in the subject line. What is the best way to obtain images not protected under copyright. Does it involve searching over the net and hope that there is an image not protected under copyright, or what.

- Yes, sleep, and I was actually at a convention over the weekend, giving talks about various subjects including the Knights Templar. I didn't have very much internet access in the hotel, which is why I'm taking such a long time to get through the thank you notes! I'm quite sincere though when I say that I'll try again for adminship soon, and I'm confident that I'll eventually get through the medieval hazing that Wikipedia currently uses as its admin-nomination process. ;) I also take heart in that some other good came of my nomination, in that I think it exposed some problems elsewhere on Wikipedia with certain groups that are canvassing and meatpuppeting. Which is both bad to see that it was happening, but also good in that now I think it's going to be less likely to happen in the future. :) So, thanks again for your support, and as Ahnold said, "I'll be back." :) --Elonka 02:53, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

This is now being discussed on deletion review. i don't agree that this is or was doing more harm than good. But first, some history. After you requested its speedy deletion, i undeleted and made a significant edit to the essay. Some days later, Radiant first started an MfD on it, and several hours later speedy deleted it based on your earlier request. I restored and userfied to my userspace, as i intended to adopt and modify the essay, under the assumption you no longer supported it. Radient's speedy deletion is now being challenged at DRV.
If DRV endorses radient's speedy, i intend to create a new version of this essay, which I fell is valuable. However, if you really don't want your words to be used, i will make my new version sufficiently different from yours that your words are not easily recognizable in it. It may be that your edits would cease to be part to the page history -- would that matter to you? DES (talk) 22:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Lists
I just tried to articulate that the selective quoting of the official policy applies to articles and whether and how data that improves the article should be added, as opposed to the New Hampshire communities by household income article which is only a list. I also tried to argue that it was in fact judgmental (not that the question of judgmental matters to the Afd), as it was compiled from a database with many fields, and the original contributor(s) decided which fields justified the "ordered ranking". Anyway, if my arguments were not presented well, feel free to restate them so that they have a better chance of making some headway. Thanks. TableManners 03:59, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Notifying the users
Thanks, I usually do place a note on the user's page, only if the 'bad' creations seem to be of good faith. But if it's clear vandalism, I tend to not bother wasting more my time because of something they did. In the case you mentioned, I should have let the user know. I will try to do it more often now. Also, I noticed that a bot once in a while places a note on the user's page on my behalf. You wouldn't happen to know the circumstances of when this happens, would you? hi mate - just root me if I bad ;-) Ea/R Help I don't think it's a good idea to get editors to send you articles to your personal/wiki gmail. Its much better to show them how to create a wikipedia sandbox or create one for them. If an article ever appeared and had a hint of your dabs on it how would you feel? it's really a bad idea - keep wiki editing here or if its crass send them to a wiki that will host the stuff or just leave it alone. Re:Commons images
Hello, nice to know you are putting effort finding images for Powderfinger. I am trying to find some too! What you have to pay attention to in Flickr is the text below the "Additional Information" heading. For the two images you found, they both say "© All rights reserved", which cannot be used here, unfortunately. Images under Creative Commons license must include the logo and/or the logo to be used in Wikipedia. Also, images marked with the tag (non-commerical) and (no derivative works) cannot be used. For these images, you may wish to email the uploader of the image in Flickr to request usage here, but I am unfamiliar with how this works...something about OTRS???
I recommend reading this page in Commons which gives a clear review of the different tags (you need an account in Commons to see it). Note at the top of the page says: "The statement 'This photo is public ' does not say anything about copyright", so be careful assuming that all images are OK. I admit it's definitely not easy to find the right images to use in Wikipedia, even images in Flickr. Hope I helped a little. RaNdOm26 14:10, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

You may remember my thoughts about this article. I suppose that since it's failed AfDs, it shall remain, unless there is a further, less raucous and less dumb appeal process that I don't know of. My problem with AfDs is that one gets a lot of ignorant noise, and it gives the illusion of "no consensus". I mean ignorant, of course, in the strict sense of the word, meaning uninformed, not unintelligent. Meaning people haven't read much policy and base their decisions on a fairly superficial and knee-jerk reaction to the article. They see the news articles, and are impressed quantitatively, not qualitatively. Is there any review process available?Pablosecca 09:18, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm wondering if you read the talk page to see how hard everyone was working to avoid a FAR? Anyway, you set up the fAR file compeltely wrong, so please hold off for a minute while I archive and correct the FAR file. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:37, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Whatever; just pls hold off for a minute while I correct the mess. I need to rearchive the old FAR and move the new one to the right place. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:40, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
OK, I've fixed the files and archived the old FAR correctly. Please follow the instructions at the top of WP:FAR and notify all relevant WikiProjects and involved editors, posting the indications of notifications back to the correct FAR (see examples on other FARs), which you can now find at Wikipedia:Featured article review/Asperger syndrome. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- I know, the instructions used to spell it out, but some folks who know nothing of FAR mangled our instructions, and I haven't gotten around to fixing them. My own fault. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:51, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
I've probably FARd more articles than anyone else; I always read the talk page before nominating to see if the timing is in the best interest of the article, or if there are involved editors trying to restore status. I may have finally gotten the regular editors there to understand that the article HAD to be fixed; I'm not sure they'll be motivated to fix it now. Losing its star is for sure what it deserves, but is that the best outcome for the article and for Wiki? No, giving the regular editors time to acknolwedge the work they needed to do might have yielded a better result. FARing it in a week might not have been so demoralizing to the people who just started working. Food for thought for the future, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:10, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it could. Next time I run it, I'll make sure to make it do that. Please note that I may not run it within the following days, per the reasons here (amongst others). Happy editing! --Boricuaeddie 23:30, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, Aussies are not smart enough to make AWB bots, the hardest bots to program :-) This is a joke; anyone can run an AWB bot. When an AWB bot is approved, it gets added to a list of bots authorized to use AWB, which permits them to use a special tab not seen by regular users that includes a featured named "auto-save", which makes the bot save the edits automagically after a certain period of time. And, no, it will not need another BRFA, as the task is related. If you're planning on making a bot, feel free to ask me if you need any help! Happy editing! --Boricuaeddie 23:37, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Exactly. However, it's not as easy it sounds. You have to install AWB, open AWB, get the lists, create a suitable edit summary, make it skip pages that need not be edited, click auto-save, and click run. That's very hard and it takes, like, 5 whole minutes. You have to be a genius to do that :-) I actually have no knowledge of any programming languages, so if I can do it, so can anyone else :-) --Boricuaeddie 23:43, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- I've left my comments :-) Good luck! Great name for the bot, BTW. --Boricuaeddie 00:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- No, just set the time between edit saves to every 10 seconds and let it run for like 10 minutes, which will probably be enough for it to make 50 edits. --Boricuaeddie 01:58, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, and regarding this test, please remember to use "prepend", not "append", so it puts the template in top of the page, and not below comments. --Boricuaeddie 02:01, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Some more: To solve this, tell it to skip pages that already contain the prefix "{{WP Australia". To make sure we can stop the bot, please tell people to leave you messages on the bot's talk page and not yours while it's running, as AWB stops when it detects a new message; Please remember to have your bot watchlist your talk page to see when you have new messages. Good luck! --Boricuaeddie 02:17, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

- I've left my comments :-) Good luck! Great name for the bot, BTW. --Boricuaeddie 00:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Giggy, could you undelist this and give it a chance to be fixed... If you read my comment, the problem is that NO ONE notified anyone else that there was a problem with the article. It would be nice to give the people who are working on the article some time to fix it up before we delisted it. It looks like it only had notice for like 2 hours. Afd closing
Non-admins shouldn't close AFD debates as delete. There was no good reason to do that. Punkmorten 15:39, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- I disagree. At times, there is a long list of unclosed AfDs. I believe that non-admins helping out at these times is extremely useful. Giggy, I suggest you feel free to ignore the process and be bold and continue to close AfDs as "delete", as it's not hurting Wikipedia in any way. --Boricuaeddie 23:58, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Non-admins should indeed close AFDs, but only with the outcome keep, speedy keep, merge and/or redirect. That's what WP:DPR says, Boricuaeddie. And the particular AFD which caught my eye was just relisted, and as such leaned towards no consensus at the time. I will generally not advise anyone to WP:IAR. Punkmorten 08:14, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I was unaware that DPR had changed. If you like, I can find the diff I was aware of, where it said I was aloud to close debates as delete. In any case, I'll be more careful with consensus in the future. Giggy Talk 08:31, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey mate. Thanks for your help on the List of Crowded House awards FLC. You turned the one opposition into a neutral, which is great! Hopefully he can be pushed all the way! Anything else you can see as appropriate feel free to contribute. I'd suggest putting up the PF awards page for FLC, but it's not global enough. Closing an AfD
The closure at investment bankers: I wonder, who are you, exactly, to close an AfD debate, saying that three comments make a snowball? I had added a comment, which no one will presumably read, pointing out that a previous AfD in the area had been improperly diverted into a speedy. I'm concerned - yes, seriously concerned - that poor decisions are taken in the area of these closures. Charles Matthews 07:07, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- Like, in another case, one person agrees with your nomination, and you comment That's all I need to see. Can the next person who reads this perform the redirect? Exactly who died and gave you this status? Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hindley Street (song). Charles Matthews 07:14, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- Further problem: non notable person, WP:BIO. Speedy, snowball close, anyone? at the AfD for Chaim Dov Keller shows ignorance of what WP:BIO actually says. Proposing that someone unqualified actually makes an improper closure under those conditions mere heightens my concerns here. Charles Matthews 07:24, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- You added comments on my User talk page, and then asked me to continue here. You cited WP:DELPRO as entitling your actions. Do you notice where it says Closing discussions in which you have offered an opinion or for a page that you have edited heavily presents a conflict of interest and should be avoided? That's under WP:DELPRO#NAC. Charles Matthews 06:59, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- With reference to your query on my Talk, where have I violated that?, do you understand what the policy is saying when it mentions a "conflict of interest"? Because "conflict of interest" is a situation, and the point of what is said there is to prevent people getting into a false position because they don't recognise the situation. Asking someone else to act as your agent in closing does not actually wipe out this sort of conflict of interest, and I'm concerned that you think it does. You are using various tactics to get what you see as a correct result forced through in hours. Charles Matthews 07:24, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- With reference to your comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chaim Dov Keller on my behaviour, please note what is said at WP:HARASS. It specifies, of stalking, This does not include checking up on an editor to fix errors or violations of Wikipedia policy, nor does it mean reading a user's contribution log; those logs are public for good reason. Charles Matthews 07:58, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Cas Liber's recipe for a good FAC
- .Gather all data and refs - Re Powderfinger, the article is promising but needs to be really comprehensive - lots of other info like themes they write about, influences, notable videos etc. can be added. I'll leave notes on talk page of anything else I can think of. This is the fiddliest.
- .Look at other music FAs and compare.
- . After all info included, then go over lead to ensure lead summarises all important stuff in article, and all info in lead is expanded upon elsewhere in article. Given this this is why many leads have no refs in them but its an ongoing debate.
- .Ensure all images are properl cleared. I'm not good on this and am only just getting my head around it. As I've done FAs which I've taken photos for (or used donated ones) it hasn't been a problem for me yet. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 09:06, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- . There will be WP:MOS issues. I'll see if I can see any so far. There are loads and they are finicky.
- .After all this, it will be copyedit time - read this which will help alot. I'll keep an eye on this bit. There are some really cool people who can help at the right time. it is not worth doing this until content sorted.
- . Put up for FAC while listening to Sunsets repeating, "I am a God, I am a modern Shakespeare"
- . If FAC fails, listen to These Days and turn low mood into a reflective calm one.
No worries....cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 09:06, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- Actually the Beastie Boys pages are quite well written as I was just browsing them...(Last band I ever saw live)cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:06, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hahaha - yeah, I've thought of things like that before (...and you really know you're a WP addict when.....) cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:12, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- I just thought - the other thing which would be cool would be to write to the official website or publicist of Powderfinger. You never know, they may donate some nice images with licence. The beastie boys photo in the box at top is really cool.cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:39, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

- Consensus was already reached on this article. Please see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Investment bankers. Giggy\Talk 06:31, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- That is a highly questionable statement. The closure being 'redirect', and three votes having mentioned a merge, the closure should certainly have been in terms of a merge. What is more, you edit-warred in favour of your redirect. I wonder why you think three votes is enough for these decisions, anyway. Charles Matthews 11:25, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Misery
Why the interest in Misery the band? Why would it be an improvement to Wikipedia(WP) to delete the article? If you Google the band, there is WP as the first hit. And we want that to stop, right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nanabozho (talk • contribs) 19:26, August 26, 2007 (UTC)
- I don't have any specific interest in the band, but they don't meed the inclusion policy. If you would like to promote them via Google, get their MySpace listed that way - don't use WP to advertise. Giggy\Talk 22:05, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Specifically then, what motivated you to nominate the article? I think you are missing my point. It's the act of deletion that will cause people not to use WP to learn anything about Misery. That's going to be the result of your nomination. People not using WP is the goal, right?
I understand the terrible burden this article places upon WP, and it may even be an attempt to undermine the very foundations of WP. People using WP to learn about their favorite band just wont do, the next thing you know, they might use it look up other stuff, or even start writing new related articles. No, we've identfied the threat here, and it is Misery. We aren't going to let these scallywags get away with toppling WP, no sir ee, as Barney Fife used to say. Nanabozho 05:18, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- No, people shouldn't be using Wikipedia to research ignoble bands. That's why we have notability policies (WP:BAND, again) - to keep the place clean of articles that aren't appropriate. If it was run the way you propose, we'd have articles about the dandruff in my hair. — Giggy 08:15, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Ignoble - Not noble in quality, character, or purpose; base or mean. Not of the nobility; common. Maybe they will write a song about this. Misery does have more fans than the dandruff in your hair does, which might be another song. All I can say at this point, since WP doesn't want the traffic, is that maybe I can convince them to write a song about Wikipedia. Still un-answered, because it is closely guarded secret of the open and transparent encyclopedia that anyone can edit, is what motivated you to nominate the article? Nanabozho 18:45, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Re:AfD
Oh, sorry 'bout that. I just thought that I should probably get to the point, but I should probably say why I support deletion, yeah. I'm still kinda new, so participating in these discussions, I might stand out a bit. But, I'll improve-I'm a fast learner. How do you nominate an article for deletion? reminder to mentor
Hola Mentors!
Im sending you this reminder because you volunteered to mentor my students in English Advanced B as they become contributing members of the Wikipedia community. We start working with Wikipedia in earnest next week. I ask you to take a look at your entry in the Mentor Table at Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Mentors
Please update the information, esp. with what your technical and informational expertise is or, if you have decided that you no longer want to participate, please remove your information from the table. Please watch the pages associated with the project. Students will contact you via your user page and as soon as my students have user pages, I will put them on the navigation bar associated with the project.
I don’t need to remind you that your job is NOT to write their assignments for them, of course. I certainly will tell my students that… and the fact that you are volunteers that don’t have to help them… so they need to be nice. If any students misbehave (tho I don’t expect it) don’t hesistate to contact me and I will take care of it. The goal of this project is to integrate successfully into the Wikipedia community. Anyway… what I really need your help with is helping students get oriented to Wikipedia, make appropriate changes and write about appropriate topics (see Wikipedia:School_and_university_projects/ITESM_Campus_Toluca/Syllabus for assignments). I also need your technical expertise… I am only an English teacher after all! I appreciate what technology does for us but I am no technical expert!
Again, thank you for volunteering and you will hear from us again soon! Thelmadatter 19:22, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Thelmadatter

User page deleted
I have deleted User:Giggy/Australian Cabal, because of concerns that it will cause people to inappropriately edit articles. Sorry, normally I'd laugh, but main article namespace integrity always trumps humour. - Ta bu shi da yu 15:09, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- To be clear; I know this wasn't used in the mainspace, but the page advocated the intentional vandalizing of other editor's pages. Even with notification of said editors as to the vandalism, it's still vandalism. A joke is one thing. Vandalism is another. --Durin 15:17, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Adminship
Dear Giggy - not ignoring your request, but considering it. I've had the offer made a couple times before, and realistically didn't see much need. However, with some of the projects I've been working on with others recently, it would be really nice for at least one of us to have admin status so we're not constantly bothering someone to use the "mop" is housekeeping matters! I hope we didn't create a backlog with some of the image-related requests and page moves that we requested! :)
My main concern now is that there would be objection due to my contention that there is a huge lacuna/contradiction right now between the stated policies/guidelines in several areas - see here for my concerns. I'm not a deletionist, but do believe that Wikipedia:Notability (people) and Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons should be taken 100% at face value, and really believe that Jimbo didn't go far enough [[7]] in stating that all non-referenced biographical materials don't have any place here. I know it's not policy (yet!) and wouldn't enforce my POV with admin tools, but I've seen so many non-referenced biographical articles with simple claims that aren't referenced therein, that I do see a need for some resolution to the lacuna between the policies and guidelines as they stand right now.
Ciao for now, and any feedback you might have in re my concerns would be appreciated! SkierRMH 18:03, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
