New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Theroadislong,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Theroadislong,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Theroadislong,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Reminders

website used as reference

Hi Theroadislong,

Thank you, and yes, I agree that websites cannot add notability, however, in my case, I am trying to reference press and essays that have never been digitized, but copies of the original publications are scanned in the artist’s papers and listed with ISBN numbers on his website with individual Internet address . I fall back on this from Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources#Reliability_in_specific_contexts

“Context relates to specific facts, not just the source

The very same source may be reliable for one fact and not for another. Evaluation of reliability of a source considers the fact for which the source is cited, the context of the fact and cite in the  article, incentives of the source to be reliable, the general tone of credibility of the source for the specific fact, etc. For example, a web site that purports to list an artist's works is likely reliable for the fact that the artist authored a specific work, if the web site list meets other criteria for reliability (e.g., not under control of the artist or otherwise questionable), and especially if the list has some further indicia of reliability of existence and publication of the work (ISBN number, publisher stock number, photographs of covers, etc.). Similarly, the publisher's web site is likely to be reliable for the fact that the work exists, for the fact that the work was authored by the purported author, and for publication data (publishers are incentivized to be truthful about the works they publish; publishers do not invite copyright suits or inquiries for works that do not exist). But neither the list web page nor the publisher's web site are per se reliable for any critical, artistic, or commercial evaluation of the work, or any rank ordering of merit, without further indicia of reliability.”

I have seen websites listed on Wikipedia about living artists, on older Wikipedia, under external links, but if that is red flag I will leave it off. Jjcoste2 (talk) 16:16, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

References do not have to be online we don't need scanned copies. Theroadislong (talk) 16:22, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Theroadislong,
Thank you, that is interesting. Are you saying that my press references would be acceptable as is without a link?  If that is the case and I removed the press links to the articles, would you be able to let me know where my draft might stand currently on this road  known as Dan Snyder (artist)? Jjcoste2 (talk) 20:29, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Draft:Dan Snyder (artist) passes the criteria at WP:NARTIST but the citations are not correctly formatted, which may put reviewers off accepting. Theroadislong (talk) 20:32, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - Thank you for checking in. I actually realized immediately what you had done and what was wrong when I saw your edit in preview mode. I have been attempting to replicate, but when I do I get an error message. For some reason I lost my ability to use the visual editor after my first big edit, but I have been able to get this far on "source" till now. I am re -reading up on the reference code help pages and unless I have a bug, I hope to have it resolved as soon as I get time to work on it. But in hindsight, yes, that was unwise of me to remove your example before I actually made the footnotes work.
Thanks again! Jjcoste2 (talk) 17:34, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok -Apparently one needs to leave a space between citation numbers!
Now, I just have to figure out how to use a citation number more than once.
Thanks again! Jjcoste2 (talk) 18:03, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Theroadislong,
Romans built roads that last for centuries, but that doesn't mean they aren't bumpy.
I can now get a citation in, but beside the repeating a citation issue, it appears that when I put them in it removes the link. I am assuming that cant be good, or is that just what happens on "preview"?
Thanks Again Jjcoste2 (talk) 18:29, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear you clearly haven't understood WP:REFB. Theroadislong (talk) 20:21, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will read -apparently my dyslexia is getting the best of me again. Jjcoste2 (talk) 20:31, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Theroadislong
Hopefully, the citations look better.
I attempted to reuse citation #1 for the public art list, but it renumbered as #11. Would that just be redundant anyway?
Also, do the External Links, and Further Reading need to be cited?
Thank you very much Jjcoste2 (talk) 19:03, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Theroadislong
How does the Dan Snyder (artist) draft look now?

URGENT

Your denial of the Carus Draft for not being notable is false and wrong. Please feel free to create a new draft for it, otherwise it will be created by someone else. Bond000777 (talk) 04:40, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Threats are so counter-productive. Liz Read! Talk! 05:10, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your draft Draft:Carus Chemical Company consists of a single unsourced sentence, clearly is was never going to be accepted by anyone, you are free to continue editing. Theroadislong (talk) 06:59, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for your review and comment. If those citations with Namu Wiki are removed, from your view, the draft cannot be approved as is?The referenced content actually comes from the show itself, so can you refer to the episode of the show? This was the reason for using Namu Wiki as I was not sure... Echohk (talk) 14:50, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed all references to namu wiki and replaced with news articles. Would appreciate your kind review that your comment has been addressed. Thank you in advance! Echohk (talk) 23:52, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article review

Hello, my friend, how are you? Please review my last article. It was rejected due to lack of sources. Indeed, this problem has been solved and many reliable sources have been added. Mohammad Ali0 (talk) 13:10, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Patriot Software (draft)

Hello, thank you for going over my page. Can you provide more information about why it was declined and which areas I need to remove / tweak before resubmitting--for example, is it mainly the review quotes in the "Reception" area that's "reading more like an advertisement?" Also, do I need to remove the references and the draft copy that don't meet the 4 criteria and only keep the references that do? Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated! Thank you. Rachelwriting (talk) 13:06, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw your note about Forbes, Crunchbase, etc. I will remove. Does this likewise mean I need to remove that content (e.g., not mention the patent?). Rachelwriting (talk) 13:12, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
An article that merely tells us about the company is deemed to be advertising. A Wikipedia article summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about a topic showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable business. Only content supported by independent, reliable sources will count towards any notability. Theroadislong (talk) 13:23, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide this information. I will remove the information that does not meet the notability standards and resubmit for approval. Rachelwriting (talk) 14:31, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments on the above mentioned article, I have now removed any Amazon and IMDB sources and now only use internal links in the body of the article.

Please let me know if the sourced and citations have been used correctly. BlakeK56 (talk) 15:04, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have accepted the draft for you here Jamie Joseph Campbell, the references need expanding per the two examples I did for you. Cheers Theroadislong (talk) 15:13, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think I found what I needed - "get rid of the reference tabs" !!
Hopefully, that all looks better Jjcoste2 (talk) 04:23, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's looking good to go! Theroadislong (talk) 06:49, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pushing the button . This is a fascinating journey. Thank you for your guidance. Jjcoste2 (talk) 14:18, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, I pushed the review button before I found your notes. I see that one can still edit as we wait in line, so I will endeavor to put those citations back in.
Thank you. Jjcoste2 (talk) 22:36, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If needed, I would place a citation for the 2007 award. However, the citation would be the same as the current number (4). The procedure, as I understand it, is to give the new a citation a reference name, so that one can use it again. However, I’m not clear on whether I have to literally delete the present number (4) first.
Thank you. Jjcoste2 (talk) 00:55, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gobardhan Ash

Hi Gobardhan was a member of the Calcutta Group - his name is already within the group mention in Wikipedia. The Calcutta Group was an important group related to modernism in India. Gobardhan Ash is already famous as a master artist (a modernist) - but lacks his own wikipedia page. Ichatt4957 (talk) 06:17, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry but being "famous" is NOT one of the criteria at WP:GNG or WP:NARTIST. Theroadislong (talk) 06:24, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please recheck the Draft:Gobardhan Ash with all the reference materials and sources added there - he easily passes any notability test. He is very relevant to history. Today is also his 117th birthday Ichatt4957 (talk) 06:21, 5 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please note - have also added his awards. He has been given lifetime achievement awards by major institutions . Warm Regards Ichatt4957 (talk) 10:21, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
None of the awards are referenced however. Theroadislong (talk) 10:24, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Each of the three awards - the certificates/plaques are uploaded as images/references on the same draft to avoid any confusion. Do u want me to refer to these images after each award line ? Please let me know. But I do think that may not be required as the images/certificate/plaques are also in the draft page and anyone can see them. Ichatt4957 (talk) 10:30, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ichatt4957 Images cannot be used as references. Theroadislong (talk) 10:37, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Further updated with external reference to each award Ichatt4957 (talk) 05:33, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
please do take a look Ichatt4957 (talk) 20:54, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 15:21:25, 28 July 2023 for assistance on AfC submission by Sarahafifi

I request assistance because I don’t understand what to do for this article, why moved to draft and considered for deletion, I need someone who may help to improve it

Sarahafifi (talk) 15:21, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You need to show how they pass the criteria at WP:GNG or WP:NWRITER it has been deleted once already at WP:AFD and I can't see how they are notable enough in Wikipedia terms for an article. Theroadislong (talk) 15:40, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your Rejection of My Donald A. Walker Article

Can you give me very precise instructions on what I need to do to get the article published?

When I originally submitted it I didn't understand Wikipedia, and it was rejected because I didn't have any third party references. I was told that examples of things I could provide are links to published papers that he had authored that were in journals, books, etc. I have added about 7 journal articles and books, including a chapter he authored for a book on Paul Samuelson, in which he published his personal, life-long correspondence with Samuelson, who was a mentor to him.

I also chose papers that were highly-cited by others.

My understanding from what I had been previously told was that if I added some of these papers and books to show he was well-known in his field, that that was all I needed to do.

It appears to me that my article for Walker is better-cited than this article on Math professor Nomizu, whose son I am personal friends with: Katsumi Nomizu. ElvisTheMan (talk) 12:06, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft was declined not rejected, See other poor quality articles exist. Katsumi Nomizu has the tag ”This article includes a list of general references, but it lacks sufficient corresponding inline citations." Your draft would benefit from some independent sources. Theroadislong (talk) 12:22, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your Rejection of My "Leibniz Institute for Catalysis" Article

Hallo Theroadislong,

This is just the english verion of the German aticle about the publicy funded research istitute of the Leibniz Association (LIKAT Rostock, Leibniz-Institut für Katalyse). there is no advertisment, but as a pubicy funded intitute we must inform the society about our reseach content and our research results.

Therefore it is neccesary to have this Wiki page. Lots of people lookfirst at wiki and then visit the official home page.

I´d be happy if you could best regards Likat nutzer (talk) 10:03, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"we must inform the society about our research content and our research results" that is the very definition of advertising here. The German Wikipedia has very different guidelines to the English one. Theroadislong (talk) 10:06, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

From Under The Bridge revision to remove IMDb reference

Hello Theroadislong,

Thank you for reviewing the From Under The Bridge film submission. The IMDb reference has been replaced with a valid news article.

From Under The Bridge awards list

Hello Theroadislong,

Thank you for your feedback:

"20 awards" is not sourced and Dreamotion Studios is a primary source and not clear that any of those awards are notable?

The awards for the film are referenced on FilmFreeway, IMDb, in news articles and via each individual organization. I understand via your previous statement, the IMDb list is not acceptable. So should I list every organization website referencing every award? I can do this, but it will take a lot of time and many references.

Thank you - Ronald RonaldCooper (talk) 19:20, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure it is worth the effort as the awards don't seem to be notable so don't help with notability. Theroadislong (talk) 19:39, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Theroadislong,
News article and online references have been added to validate the award wins. 'Best Short Film' wins and cinematic screenings in cities such as Los Angeles, London, Paris and so on are relevant, especially with the suicide, bullying and cyberbullying awareness. With journalists present for such awards, is this not notable?
Thank you - Ronald RonaldCooper (talk) 20:31, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

David "Feet" Rogers Draft

Hello, last we talked on July 18th you said you were going to leave the draft for another reviewer to be fair.

I'm just following up. Is my draft currently waiting in some sort of pool for another editor to review it? Or do you have to "release" my draft first so that it goes into a pool so that another editor is able to see the draft and review it? Thepublicschoolmusician (talk) 21:39, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Theroadislong As per previous discussion, I have not changed any part of my article. Can you please review my draft article?@Scottwilliam2609 Scottwilliam2609 (talk) 10:03, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft Draft:SunTec Group has not been submitted for review? It would be declined if you did however, because it is totally unacceptable promotion. Theroadislong (talk) 10:05, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My draft page on Maria Thomas

Thanks for moving and adding the AFC submission tag. I still have some work to do on this draft, indicated by brackets, so it's not ready for review. I'm sharing the draft with a few people (incl her son and some who know Wikipedia better than I do) for reactions and comments. Once that is done I may just pop it into Wikipedia rather than submit for review - while less experienced than many, I have created articles before and that way has worked better. Thx. If you are sharing it with her son first that would indicate a conflict of interest, so it would be preferable to submit for review. Theroadislong (talk) 16:17, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 15:31:58, 11 August 2023 for assistance on AfC submission by BMPXX123

Hello, thank you so much for your quick edits on my page. Can you please give an example of which part reads like an advertisement? I am looking forward to improving my page. Thank you!

It reads exactly as what the company would like to say about itself, (not surprisingly as you work for them). Wikipedia is not a place to merely tell about something, Wikipedia summarises what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about a topic, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of notability. The activities section is also sourced to a blog which is not a suitable source. Theroadislong (talk) 15:45, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Have updated Draft:Gobardhan Ash with references
