Thegooduser - All done! I noticed that the page you linked me to includes a section where PorkchopGMX was going to ask questions, but it was blank and didn't have any listed. Is he going to be adding more questions? If he does, please let me know (or PorkchopGMX can do so directly) and I'll be happy to follow-up and answer them. I hope my participation is helpful!Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:53, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User Conflict Resolution?

Good evening! I have been repeatedly having to spend time undoing destructive, unnecessary, or derogative edits made by user Amishai GG. While I'm not attempting to be rude to this user, there are certain standards an expectations I was told to uphold when editing politicians' pages, such as always using an official portrait if available (and if not extremely outdated). I see you already commented on this users' talk page awhile ago for a similar issue. I was wondering if you could assist me in how to proceed with this situation, as I am not sure how to, and it's distracting me from other contributions. I appreciate your time! Peter M. Grund (talk) 03:39, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pharexia! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your request for input and advice when it comes to communicating with other editors. I'll be happy to help you and provide you with some information that will help your message and your concerns to be clear, but while being polite and positive to the editor.
The best thing to do in this situation is to talk to the editor directly and not by using any templated warnings or notices if the behavior seems to be in good faith - and especially if templated warnings and notices have been left before and without success. Just leave a custom message with your own words, and start by saying that you appreciate the user's edits and good-faith attempts to improve Wikipedia. Then, say that you've reviewed some of the editor's recent changes and contributions and that you're concerned that the edits you're seeing made by the user are not in compliance with policy or consensus made in the past. Provide specific diffs to the edits you're referring to and link the user to the exact policies or discussions so that he/she can navigate to them and review them. Summarize what should be done instead of what they've been doing, and offer your assistance in case the user has any questions or needs any help. Link them to your user talk page and let them know that you're happy to help them any time they need it. This method of talking to the user will accomplish three important things. It will:
  1. Explain to the user that you understand that their edits are not vandalism or bad-faith disruption and that the user is trying to improve the encyclopedia.
  2. Clearly explain the issues or concerns with the user's recent edits and with examples and direct links to the relevant policy or discussions pages for the user to review and understand.
  3. Give the user the ability to ask for help or follow-up with questions, and while re-iterating further that they're not being punished and that you wish to help them.
Just follow what I recommend above, and you'll be doing what I feel is the best thing for the user, as well as the right thing. Even in situations where you're not sure if someone's edits are being made in good faith or in bad faith, it's always better to assume good faith and reflect this in your messages (at least until the user's edits clearly show differently).
I hope this response is helpful to you, and please forgive me for my delayed response to you here. I'm just getting home from seeing family for the holidays and I'm just now getting caught up with all of the Wikipedia messages and emails I receive. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, if you need more help with anything else, or if the issue continues despite your further communication with the user. I'll be more than happy to help or step in if it becomes necessary.Ā :-) I wish you good luck and a great rest of your day. Happy editing!Ā :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:12, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As you've edited this article, perhaps you could take a look at the talk page and my post to NORN. Thanks. Doug Weller talk 17:52, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doug Weller! The only edits I've made to this article were to revert two previous edits: one for unexplained content removal, and the other for adding content that wasn't in compliance with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. However, if you feel that my eyes and perhaps my participation in the discussion you started on the article's talk page will be helpful to you, I'll be happy to take a look and add comments. Please let me know if you need anything else and I'll be happy to help.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:15, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Doug Weller - I found this discussion that you started on the article's talk page, and it looks like the matter has been resolved. Is this true? Let me know if my assumptions are incorrect and I'll be happy to revisit the discussion and help.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:19, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That was a bit odd. Adamant their edits were ok, then reverted their edits. Thanks. Doug Weller talk 19:30, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Doug Weller - Indeed... odd, but much better than being uncivil and aggressive, and then refusing to take your advice and input. Let me know if I can help with anything else and I'll be happy to do so. Hope your holiday was fun and stress-free and that your New Year is both fun and safe.Ā ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:50, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

There has been persistent vandalism on the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks wikipedia page. I noticed that you put a similar block on the Parramatta Eels page. Is it possible to do it for this one?. Sully198787 (talk) 11:28, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker). Please go to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. There needs to be a consensus before an admin is allowed to do it Sully198787. If you want to request a block, please go to WP:AN and click on the desired section. Cheers --EurovisionNim (talk to me)(see my edits) 10:29, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This user was referring to page protection, not blocking. In either case, it doesn't necessarily require a consensus but the approval and action of a single administrator who agrees with the report or the request. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:27, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sully198787! Thanks for the message and your request. I took a look at the article's recent history and I've applied semi-protection to it for one week. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else and I'll be happy to do so. If you have further page protection requests, it might be better to post them here in the event that I'm offline - requests that are posted there will receive a faster response during those times that I'm away.Ā :-) I hope you had a great holiday and I wish you happy editing.Ā :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:25, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The water is wide

This song was first known to me as Waly Waly, which I first heard sung by Paddie Bell, accompanied by the Corrie Folk Trio, in concert in Edinburgh c.1963-64. The song and sentiment perfectly suited Paddie's soprano voice and elfin charm. Although the group performed it a number of times, I have not found any trace of a recording - so it remains only a vivid memory!16:30, 23 December 2018 (UTC)MisterBlue1 (talk) Ps I don't understand the Wiki processes!

Hi MisterBlue1! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for leaving me a message here and for explaining your edit to the The water is wide article. I'll be happy to help you and explain some of Wikipedia's important policies.Ā :-) Any changes that you add to Wikipedia articles that are not common knowledge, contain exact information, dates, or data, or are otherwise likely to be challenged or removed by another editor - must have a reliable source be located and cited in-line with those changes. We cannot simply add content because we have personal experience, recollections, or personal relationships or knowledge of the article subject; that kind of content is considered original research which is not allowed on Wikipedia. This even includes citing any kind of article, research, or conclusions that you've written yourself - that's all under the same policy I linked you above and hence is not allowed.
Since you're new here, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you spend time making any more edits or changes. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be helpful to you. Most users who take this advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and it led to them being saved hours (if not over a day's worth) of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please don't hesitate to leave me a message if you have any questions, get stuck anywhere, or if you need help with anything. I'll be happy to lend you a hand! Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia and I hope you enjoy your stay.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:36, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Joeymiskulin is at it again

Heads up to anyone who might care to help handle the situation: Joeymiskulin is vandalizing numerous television series articles again after just coming off of a block. I believe he has been blocked twice for this sort of behavior. AlexTheWhovian and I have tried to clean up after him in the past but some help would be nice. I believe you had blocked him in the past so I thought you might take a look at his edit history from the last few hours. Thanks, BoogerD (talk) 04:13, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mohd absamĀ (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Hi Oshwah. One editor re-created this article today (it was speedy deleted a few months ago). I nominated it for speedy deletion [1], and they changed the subject of the article without renaming it [2]. Then they repeated the same action [3]. They might need to have their article moved to draft space to make experiments there. I can do that but it is better if an admin has a look at the case. Thanks, Ktrimi991 (talk) 19:30, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Serial Number 54129: nominated the article for speedy deletion and the tag was removed by the creator again. Ktrimi991 (talk) 19:37, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ktrimi991 - I apologize for the delayed reply to your message here. I'm (literally) on my way home from visiting family for the holidays.Ā :-) It looks like the article has since been deleted, which is good to see. If the article gets re-created and by the same editor (or even if the page looks the same as before and it's created again by someone else), or if you need anything else - definitely let me know and I'll be happy to take a look and step in. AN/I discussion half-closure

Oshwah,

I commented out your partial closure of this AN/I discussion in hopes that by not having the "closed" template at the top, the ongoing discussion further below would attract additional comments and hopefully a consensus. Please let me know if I should have done differently. Thanks. --Sable232 (talk) 03:26, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sable232! Uh oh! Looks like I might have dun goof'd an ANI closure... if that's the case, thanks for fixing it and for making sure that current parts of the discussion remained open for others to participate openly.Ā :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:41, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was too late though, the archive bot got it before a consensus was reached. Anyway, I wasn't sure what the etiquette on removing an admin closure was so thanks for that. --Sable232 (talk) 23:14, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sable232 - It depends on the closure, but in general if it's becoming obvious that the closure of a discussion was ill-timed or badly done with the feedback and follow-up responses that the discussion is continuing to receive, I say re-open it!Ā ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:17, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Huggle

Hi, Oshwah! What does "Queue" and "Filtered Edits" mean on Huggle, and what does the + button do on the top?--Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 21:20, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thegooduser! The queue is simply the window that shows you the edits that are up next on Huggle for you to review and what will appear next when you move to the next edit. The drop-down list located on top of the queue list is the name of a filter that comes with Huggle when you install it. These filters change what Huggle will essentially look for and add to your queue when edits that need reviewing are found. You can use the default filters that are provided for you, or you can create your own filters in the Huggle Preferences menu. The "+ button" simply creates another tab that you can use to review edits while saving what you had open in the first (or previous tab) - much like how a browser works and with allowing you to have multiple websites open in tabs. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:39, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How can I link my TW CSD log to HG when I do speedy deletion on HG? --Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 21:47, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Good question. I'm not sure if it's possible to do. I never use Huggle to block users, nor do I ever use it to tag or delete pages. You'll get a better answer to your question by asking it here.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:02, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How do you block users? Do you just smash Special:Block in the search bar? --Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 22:06, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Are you talking about how I block users in Huggle? Or on Wikipedia? If you're referring to using Wikipedia to block users, there are multiple ways to do it. There's a guide on how to do it if new administrators are unsure or haven't blocked before. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:19, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If I asked you to block me just for fun as the reason for the block "Well I don't know, but I want to" for 3 seconds will this affect my standing on Wikipedia?--Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 22:44, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - No. It'll affect my standing on Wikipedia... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:46, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then why did SQL and a few admins block people for fun? --Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 22:47, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Like the blocks in my block log? Because I don't care if they do so. I've offered (and still offer) my account up for testing if it's needed in a production environment like this site.Ā :-) However, most editors (if I were to just block them randomly and out of the blue without a request) would absolutely care and would be (understandably) upset if I did that to them. In your hypothetical case (where you request it specifically), it would be fine but could still be seen as "playing with an admin button" and in a case where it's completely unnecessary if other editors were to see that block and without knowing the context behind it. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:55, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Query

How long does it take for MediaWiki to log me out automatically?--Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 23:31, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser - I don't have an exact answer for that, but I know that it depends on whether or not you ticked the "keep me logged in" checkbox when you logged into Wikipedia on each particular machine, whether or not you regularly (or automatically) wipe your browser cache and cookies, if you change your password (doing so logs you out of Wikipedia on all other browser sessions), as well as other variables. Assuming a perfect environment where your browser cache is not wiped and your cookies always remain until they expire, I know that ticking the "keep me logged in" checkbox will keep your account logged in for up to a year until it expires and logs you out automatically. It goes without saying, but you should obviously not tick that checkbox when logging into Wikipedia while using a computer that isn't exclusively yours and that others also use - especially' on public computers. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:38, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do I take from the message that the problem is with the pic - yesĀ ?

This is the first time I have ever done a Wiki page and has been both fascinating & challengingĀ ! (and epic!)

That all said I need your help pleaseĀ !

The pic in question has been emailed to me by Ashley Artus (who owns the photo and the copyright) which he paid MUG Photography for and that the pic can be used in the public domain. Ashley Artus owns the photo and the copyright. He has given me permission which I have in an email, he is happy for me to use the picture on his profile for WIKIpedia as it is now in the public domain & free...

Where do we go from here?

What steps do I need to take next pleaseĀ ?

Many thanks in adavance.

Hi AndycBtn! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your explanation and your questions. I'll be happy to answer them and help point you in a good direction to get yourself started on the easiest path possible so that you can learn the ropes and become familiar with how things work around here. I did notice that the image you added to the article was deleted and that you were talked to regarding its copyright and license, but my message to you didn't involve the picture. After reviewing the article you created and the content you added to it, I noticed that some content was added by copying it directly from one or two external sources. This method of pulling information and citing from references and sources is not good to do, as this represents plagiarism and can be a very serious matter depending on what's being copied. Instead of doing this, you should pull information and cite content from other sources by paraphrasing the text. Make sure to actually cite the source in-line with your changes as well.
Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia and I hope you enjoy your stay.Ā :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:44, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please monitor Zakchief20

Hello Oshwah, can you please review my placement of a {{uw-vandalism4im}} at Zakchief20 (talk Ā· contribs)'s talk page? Afaicr, this is the first time I've skipped four uw levels and gone straight to 4im. If you think it was harsh, please feel free to downgrade. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 08:27, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mathglot! I personally would've added a level 2 or maybe a level 3 warning in this situation myself, but what you did was certainly not a misuse of the warning template or by any means a terrible or bad action to take. I usually keep 4im warnings in my back pocket for users that haven't been warned before (otherwise, use a level 4 for final warnings) and in cases where they cause highly disruptive or edits that severely and blatantly violate policy in bad faith. Examples are edits that are blatant and grossly offensive, insulting, or degrading edits that need revision deletion such as unambiguous racism or voicing support to kill or extinguish all people of a certain race or belief (such as transgender or LGBT groups, or something similar), threats to harm people, adding blatant BLP violations and libel to BLP articles, or if sock puppetry or editing while logged out is suspected - things that fit into that high level of severe vandalism, disruption, deception or block evasion.Ā ;-) Other than that, you did the right thing; the edit was certainly vandalism and you reverted the edit and warned the user. Oh well; the user knows what he/she did and they now know that we know.Ā ;-) Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions, need additional input or feedback on other edits, or if you just need help with anything - I'll be more than happy to lend a hand. I hope you had a great holiday season and that your New Year is both memorable and safe.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:41, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; what you say about keeping it for revdel cases with extreme violations makes sense. I'll do that in future. In the meantime, do you think I should throttle this back to a 2 or 3, or just let it be now?
Btw: I did seek out guidance at Template:Uw4im/doc and here but didn't find any, so used my best judgment (which turned out not to be that great). If there isn't already, I think there ought to be a section of guidance for usage of the different levels somewhere, with maybe a link from every Multi-level template doc page "See also" section, to the guidance section. Thanks for the offer of help, and have a great holiday season and New Year! Mathglot (talk) 02:03, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Mathglot! That's good that you tried referring to the documentation for guidelines on when to use this warning level, and I think that your idea is a very good one. What may make such a guidance section become complicated is simply the numerous amount of situations that occur on Wikipedia where a level 4im might be appropriate - I'd imagine such a guideline quickly becoming large in size and detail... lolĀ :-)
Nah, I'd just leave the template you left as-is; there's no need to go back and change it. The edit was clearly bad faith vandalism and by a user whose intentions are definitely not to contribute positively to the encyclopedia. I'm much less inclined to care about the right warning that's left in blatant cases like these. I wouldn't worry about it at all.Ā ;-) Thanks for the holiday wishes! I hope your holiday was fun and stress-free, and that you have a memorable and safe New Years.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:58, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Response to the comment you made while closing my protection request for Baked Alaska (entertainer)

It's a mischaracterization to describe my change as "unilateral" when several other editors have removed the "neo-Nazi" description saying it was unsourced, which it was. I also feel it unfair to describe insisting on sourcing contentious accusations as "edit warring", while ignoring the two other editors' reinsertion of the claim despite lacking sourcing. If anyone wants to report me because they want to preserve a faulty contentious claim in a WP:BLP I'm happy to have that discussion, though. --notJackhorkheimer (talk / contribs) 18:54, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi notJackhorkheimer, and thanks for messaging me here with your input about the protection request discussion and for providing your honest feedback about my response. I commend you for being honest and coming straight to me to talk to me about this. Re-reading my response, I do need to apologize to you: I didn't mean for it to imply that you were causing any wrong-doing with your individual changes - they were definitely unsourced edits, and the word "neo-nazi" (at least to me) would almost imply a neutral point of view issue (it's like saying that someone is a "hillbilly" or a "tree-hugger"; the names themselves can imply a point of view and how the person is perceived as). What I meant to say was that the dispute was over content and the recent edits showed a "one-vs-many" form of potential edit warring. I didn't see that this had been previously reverted before, else I wouldn't had called it this and I wouldn't have declined the request you made. I meant to say that if others have an issue with your removals and if they want to take you to AN3, let em. Let the issue get reported there and the matter be looked into. I didn't look into your attempts to discuss the issue on any talk page, but assuming that you've tried to do so, I think you'd be in the right if a report was filed. Because I didn't notice that this content was reverted before and by other people (not just you), I went ahead and applied the full protection as you requested. Please accept my apology for not seeing that this was an ongoing issue before you stepped in to revert the changes, and for the response I made that inadvertently implied that you were in the wrong. If you have any more questions, concerns, feedback, or comments for me, please don't hesitate to respond here and let me know, and I'll be happy to discuss it with you and work with you to make things right. I hope that my response here clarified the issues and better explained my thinking and what I was trying to convey in my response to your request. My user talk page is always open to you, and you're welcome to message me and leave me honest input, thoughts, and feedback - even if they disagree or if you believe that something I've done was improper, wrong, or careless. I'd rather hear it from you and with your honest thoughts, than have you not say anything at all. I won't hold it against you at all. I hope you have a great rest of your day and I wish you happy editing. Thanks again for talking to me about this. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:35, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for being thoughtful and open to self-reflection. I know that RFP isn't the best venue for more finely grained disputes (given the cartloads of flagrant vandalism that have to be dealt with) but I felt a call for protection was warranted given the contentiousness of the claims. I do still find the page as you locked it problematic, but at least it's sourced now, although I find it lacking the quality and type of sources to make the claim authoritatively--the recent edits have evolved from no source to the claim, to sources that refer generally to neo-Nazis in the headline, yet use different descriptions for Baked Alaska (entertainer) in the article itself. Now there is at least a source that makes the claim, although I don't feel the AV Club to be sufficient, but if you're fine with letting the page rest as-is I defer to your judgment, I just wanted to point that out to you. There was a similar dispute last year on the same page with the same editors that played out similarly, only then it was the term "white nationalist" which wasn't sourced. Similarly the other editors insisted there was a source for the claim "out there somewhere" but wouldn't be more specific when pressed. The page eventually settled without the "white nationalist" claim, so I was chagrined to find that the page with the same sources as before had "neo-Nazi" appellation added by an anonymous editor without citation, then replaced several times when other editors tried to remove it. In any case I'm considering opening a WP:BLPN, both because I frankly find some of the editing being done to be appalling or at least cavalier, and I'd like to get more people's input on both the editing being done and what they think the sourcing standards are and whether they're being met. --notJackhorkheimer (talk / contribs) 03:56, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi notJackhorkheimer! Thanks for following up here, for understanding what I was trying to say in my RFPP response, and for pointing out the edits from the past that I didn't see. Sure, no problem! I'm always open to feedback and self-evaluating my edits, actions, and decisions. It's the right thing to do, and for the benefit of this project and the community.Ā :-)
Yeah... I noticed that some of the content was restored when I applied full protection to the article and that it included some references. As the protecting administrator, I actually can't modify the article and change it to a preferred revision (despite what many editors think). I can only modify the article to remove blatant vandalism or resolve violations of policy (such as WP:COPYVIO, WP:BLP, and other important policies). Otherwise, I'd be seen as taking a side in the dispute and making edits in order to favor one editor's revision over another. If the article's current revision doesn't violate policy, once I shut the gate and with a gold lock slapped onto it - that is it, man... I don't get to go do what I please to it and "choose a revision I think is best" while everybody else stands helplessly and watches. That would just add more complications, issues, and frustration to mix and that's not productive or helpful to anybody. I'm aware and have seen some administrators restore or revert an article to a revision after they apply full protection to it, but they're not supposed to be doing that. Anyways, I appreciate the heads up and that you expressed your concerns regarding the article's current revision - it's always nice to have a second pair of eyes checking the article in case I miss something.
I hope the protection applied motivates everyone involved to discuss the issue, and that the discussion comes to a peaceful and successful close. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or need my assistance with anything. I'll be more than happy to lend a hand. Good luck, and I wish you happy editing and discussing.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:04, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to disconnect on my phone anyway if I leave the tab open on the background but if on my Chromebook then I do leave it idle as that doesn't have the same issue. RhinosF1 (talk) 20:52, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
RhinosF1 - Ah, that's it... you're using your mobile phone to connect to IRC. Depending on your region, carrier, and the mobile device you're using, there are idling policies when it comes to applications and data usage. Applications that go into the background will typically not be able to use data unless the app developer also creates a service that can run in the background. Carriers will also mandate when devices should changes modes regarding data usage (I wrote an article all about this here.. lol). Basically, it's all meant to save data usage and battery live on mobile devices. If you don't want the trouble of continuously dealing with a browser tab and re-connecting to IRC, there are great stand-alone IRC apps that work very well that will be better for you. I use AndroIRC for Google Android, and I can find someone to recommend an app if you have an iOS device. Again, I'm happy to have you around and I appreciate your diligence and your excellent work on Wikipedia.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:02, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's iOS RhinosF1 (talk) 22:08, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
RhinosF1 - From what I'm hearing other editors on IRC say just now, IRCCloud has an iOS app that you can download and use to connect. That's the app they recommend that will resolve your connectivity issues.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:23, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) (edit conflict) @RhinosF1: I would recommend IRCCloud for mobile devices. IRCCloud acts like a bouncer where IRCCloud's servers connect to IRC for you and then relay to your device the messages it receives. Even if you only get a free account, the two hour idle times are more than sufficient for my needs and will greatly save a lot of annoying joins and quits that would otherwise occur from a mobile device connected to IRC, since the way IRC was designed means that you'll get disconnected if you so much as change your connection (like switching from mobile data to WiFi). IRCCloud can also be accessed from any desktop computer, and everything is kept in sync from there, which is why I recommend IRCCloud for mobile despite its shortcomings. ā€”k6ka šŸ (Talk Ā· Contributions) 22:26, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My HG user warnings left are not showing in my user contributions. --Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 21:30, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser - This is most likely done on purpose. By default, if a user was recently just warned for a previous edit they just made, Huggle will not leave a warning for a subsequent edit until at least a moment or two passes by. This is so that editors who make changes quickly aren't suddenly surprised with 3 or 4 warnings left on their user talk page in less than a minute and before they've had a chance to read them and understand what they did wrong. This is an option that can be disabled, but I don't recommend that you do so. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Rule34.patheal.net article

The site was launched on April 24th 2007 by Wiiaboo and Rokoo, with an image of Nikki from 6teen topless, which was uploaded by the latter.

I would really like to know if this would make a good page on the Website, seeing that it is a hotspot for cartoon porn and such. Virtually every fictional character on the planet from Randall Boggs to Euromaus has at least 1-2 entries on the popular image sharing site, and many of the artists can be considered famous as well, including Biohazard.furholt.net, nev, Jerseydevil, The Yellow Cephalopod, Weaselgrease, Annie Mae, Sue Dunn Em, Raylude, and Em.

So what do think? Should the site get its own page, itā€™s popular, itā€™s got good talent, itā€™s got popular cartoon characters, and itā€™s been around for about 11-12 years now! ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Atlantic Ranter 9705 (talk ā€¢ contribs) 23:48, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Atlantic Ranter 9705! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions regarding the process of creating, expanding, and keeping an article on Wikipedia. I'll be happy to answer them and point you to our guidelines so that you can review and understand them. Wikipedia's process regarding the deletion of articles is to research and conclude whether or not the particular article subject meets Wikipedia's policies and guidelines on notability. This determines whether or not an article should be kept or not. In short, for something to be eligible to be included into Wikipedia as its own article, it must meet Wikipedia's general notability guidelines. Since what you're referring to here is a company and website, it also must meet Wikipedia's guidelines regarding the notability of companies as well. I highly recommend that you review these guidelines I linked you to here, and let me know if you have any questions about anything on those pages. I'll be happy to answer them if you do. Help a noob?

I want to share actual info on my own band and others that I have first hand knowledge of. How do I stay inbounds when detail is not readily verifiable by web search?

My page was a total goof, but my first hand knowledge of current bands and artists in NYC is no joke.

How can I participate without running afoul of wiki standards? Serious question. Kissyanus (talk) 01:48, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Hi! I thought I would jump in with a quick comment... I would try to dissuade you from making edits directed at your own biographical information. Let your fans write about you... It promises to be MUCH more interesting! As far as adding material about other bands from your firsthand knowledge, PLEASE BE AWARE of the notability guidelines and most importantly- You MUST provide citations from reliable and verifiable sources when making new additions to the Wikipedia. --Orengi Harvey (talk) 08:58, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Orengi Harvey! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your question. I understand that you put time into creating the content on your user page, but it's not Wikipedia-related and hence is not in compliance with Wikipedia's policies on user pages and the intended use of Wikipedia. There are many other websites that you can use to host your personal ideas and content. You could start a blog, social media website, or (if you enjoy building things yourself) purchase your own domain and then have a custom website designed. There are many places where you can host this content, but unfortunately it cannot be hosted here. This is not what Wikipedia and what user pages are for. I noticed that you reverted the change to your user page and restored the inappropriate content; I've removed it again so that your user page is in compliance with policy. Please do not restore it. You can visit the article's history page if you need to retrieve the content to copy it over to a different website. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you good luck with finding an appropriate place for this content.Ā :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:12, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed

Hi Osh, good day and I need helpĀ :(. I should have taken a few computer programming courses in university for I would not feel so lost and helpless and working some years in a software company did not help either for the software engineers were so kind and nice and they just did everything for me instead of teaching me - well I was in the business unit an not the technical department . See here - need to install wikidata and and aliases script. The link provided (I think is this one [6]) looks alien to me and I have no idea how to install it of what to do with it. Could you help or advise PLEASE. Thanks in advance. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 10:37, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a software engineer by career and I'm also an interface editor, so I can definitely help you out here.Ā :-) Let me take a look at the documentation, and I'll get back to you shortly with a follow-up response. Hi Osh, Oh, what he was trying to tell me was just copy and paste the line onto my common.js, and I was looking at the script wondering what to do with it. Now I feel silly but grateful of your help. Are you sure your edit to this article to tidy it up, didn't accidentally remove a chunk of substantive content? Dolive21 (talk) 13:02, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dolive21! Umm... I was pretty certain of that.... that is, until I saw your message here.Ā :-) Let me finish up an urgent matter that I'm currently handling, and I'll take another look and see what happened.Ā :-) Thanks for the message and the heads up about this. I'll follow-up with you here shortly. Stand by... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:09, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Dolive21 - Sorry about that; I was in the middle of an urgent matter that needed my full attention, and I also had an important message that I needed to finish and give to an editor. Looking at the changes made to the Flag article here, it removes all of the whitespace and formatting best practices that are used in order to make the article easy for others to contribute and add to. This why I reverted that change made by the IP user. The edit made by the IP user didn't add any content to the article that became removed when I reverted it, the edit actually removed content from the article that my revert restored shortly afterwards. If you have any questions or further concerns regarding this article, please let me know and I'll be happy to discuss this with you further. The IP has been blocked for vandalism, so it's highly unlikely that any content that was added to the article by this user was constructive. Thanks again for the message and for your patience. I hope you have a great day and I wish you happy editing and a memorable and safe New Years.Ā :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:00, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Clearly I was mistaken. I think I must have confused material reinserted by your edit with material removed by it.Dolive21 (talk) 14:04, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Dolive21 - No worries... it happens to everyone at some point and it's not a big deal.Ā ;-) I'd much rather you come to me directly and express concerns over an edit I may have reverted incorrectly just to find out that it was correct, than to have you say nothing at all for one reason or anther and have an incorrect or bad revision that I made be live on the encyclopedia... so I appreciate your message regardless of whether or not anybody was correct or incorrect about it.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:54, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Page Deletion

You deleted my page, which seems strange, as the tutorial/walkthrough asked that I add some basic information about myself to it. Can you explain, please? ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by BrownBearRunning (talk ā€¢ contribs) 13:58, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BrownBearRunning! So... I'm an idiot. I had your user page open in a tab next to the user page that I was intending to delete, got distracted with something urgent and had to put things down and switch around to other tabs, and when I came back to delete the user page that needed to be removed - I accidentally deleted yours. Please excuse my stupidity and forgive me for the mistake. I've of course restored your user page back to what it was before, and I hope that I didn't cause any frustration or hardship upon you. Please let me know if you have any questions or further concerns, and I'll be happy to help you. Systematic birthdate disruption

Hi Oshwah, I would like to warn about an IP hopper anonymous user that is systematically changing birthdates (and other dates) of various ukranian personalities. Check the chronology of the articles Viktor Yushchenko, Viktor Yanukovych, Olexiy Poroshenko, Maryna Poroshenko or Leonid Kuchma for example. They started a couple of days ago and frequently change the IP. At the moment I undid the malicious edits (I already did it several times) and I hope they will not do it again but in case they will restart, may be a different approach may prove more effective. Just wanted to warn an administrator about that. Horst Hof (talk) 15:39, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Horst Hof, and thanks for leaving me a message here about these articles and regarding your concerns with recent changes being made to them. I took a look at each one, and I agree that there's a likelihood of collaborative disruption and to the same data. I went and applied various levels of page protection and with a duration I felt was appropriate and proportional to the rate of disruption being added to each one. This will be the best way to resolve the manner for now given the the diverse IP addresses and ranges involved. Please let me know if I can provide any more assistance with anything else, and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks again for the message, and I hope you have a great rest of your weekend.Ā :-) Happy editing! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:03, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Query

Why are some accounts registered here not registered in Simple English Wikipedia? --Thegooduser Let's Chat šŸ 20:52, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser - When someone registers an account on a Wikimedia project such as the English Wikipedia or Spanish Wikitionary, a local account is created, as well as global account on a central host in order to control and synchronize the information between the local accounts. Local accounts are automatically created on each Wikimedia project as you visit a page there for the very first time. It does this by using the information from the global account. The reason that some accounts will show up in logs here and not on other Wikimedia project logs is simply because the user hasn't visited that project yet.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:57, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Page Protection Inquiry

Hello!

I appreciate you protecting WayV as it was going through a spam of vandalism by a IP user. I was trying to get it under control but someone else already put in the request to have that user blocked. Anyhow, that hasn't stopped them as they have now moved over to NCT (band) to create the same issue. I'm not the best when it comes to submitting request for things such as page protection, etc. I was wondering if you would be able to put a semi protection on that article as it already has an inquiry for it on it's talk page and has been going through vandalism for a while. Joe Azbell

Please allow my revisions to stand, as I am his great granddaughter with his daughter sitting right next to me, telling me his information. I don't care if this isn't the correct formatting. I corrected inaccuracies caused by people who've most likely never met him nor knew him nor related to him. If you do not replace everything I spent time talking with my grandmother, his eldest child, I will do so again. And we'll just keep going on this page no one else cares about. ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by ArcheryPrincess23 (talk ā€¢ contribs) 17:27, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ArcheryPrincess23, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your explanation and your thoughts regarding the edits you made to Joe Azbell. Unfortunately, your edits to this article are violating a number of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines due to a number of different reasons. First, your addition does not cite any reliable sources in-line with the content. This applies to any content added that's not common knowledge, contains exact data, dates, or is anything that will likely be challenged by other editors. This keeps all of Wikipedia's articles and content to a high level of verifiability and assures that everything we add or change here is legitimate, accurate, and open to scrutiny and peer-review by others.
Your statements left on my user talk page mention that you have personal knowledge or know someone close to this article subject. Unfortunately, personal knowledge, relationships, experience, or information you obtained yourself is not sufficient nor can it be accepted anywhere on Wikipedia. This information constitutes original research and is not allowed on Wikipedia. For the same reasons I explained above, original research cannot be verified or authenticated for accuracy or legitimacy at all. Information must be accompanied by a reliable source and where citing such sources is necessary.
I should also mention that, due to what appears to be a personal relationship or knowledge of the article subject, you have a clear conflict of interest with this subject area, and you should not be making any kind of edits to articles or pages where such a conflict of interest is present. It compromises the article and the neutrality of its content when people who are close to the subject personally make changes to it.
Hence, given the information I've provided here, I'm going to have to remove any content and information from the article that does not comply with policy, and it will include most of the information you added to it. This is not done because I want to give you a hard time and cause you frustration; it's done because this is what's required in order to make sure that all content complies with policy and is neutrally worded, and is verifiable for accuracy and legitimacy. One more thing I also need to mention: you absolutely positively cannot add your personal contact information to any articles or pages here, nor should you do this on any public website and pages like that. That's a very, very bad idea; I seriously cannot stress or emphasize this enough to you... please don't do that.Ā :-)
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to respond and let me know and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. I hope you understand why Wikipedia has these policies and guidelines, and that you understand that they're in-place in order to keep Wikipedia honest, accurate, and fair. Otherwise, we wouldn't be the #5 most visited website in the world, and we probably wouldn't even be talking to one another right now.Ā :-) I hope that you have a great rest of your day and I wish you good luck and a happy New YearsĀ :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:41, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Azbell

I am Joe Azbell's great-granddaughter and I have my grandmother, his oldest child, sitting next to me. If you don't mind, please replace everything you've edited out. This means a great deal to me for the information to be correct. If it doesn't follow Wikipedia guidelines, then make MY information in correct form or delete the page entirely. It is full of biological misinformation and I have the means to correct it. Please re-do everything what you have deleted or take the page down. ArcheryPrincess23 (talk) 17:32, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please refer to the response I left above to your original message here. ThanksĀ :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:45, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Machen1871, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your concerns. Are you for absolute certain that no references are available at all to verify or find out who the active coach of this team is? Most notable sports teams, when changing, releasing, or bringing on a new coach will have an article written about this by least one news provider. Because this information doesn't appear to be referenced by any sources (regardless as to whether or not the changes you made are kept), I went ahead and removed this information completely so that it's not potentially inaccurate and we can take our time to focus on location a valid source. Esja, mountain in Iceland

Good evening,

you seem to be editing out my change about mountain Esja in Iceland. I quickly ran through your bio and did not see any connection to Iceland. Who are you to delete edits to a geographical location you may never have been to and know nothing about? The name of the mountain is Esja, not Esjan so your edits are simply wrong. On another note, the article should bear the name Esja and Esjan should redirect to the name Esja, not the other way around like it is today. At best, an article named Esjan should not even exist as nothing with that name does exist!

Please fix this fallacious and misleading edit of yours.

By changing this word from saying "often" and to now say "incorrectly", you now have the statement implying different things and in a way that I felt did not comply with Wikipedia's policy on article content reflecting a neutral point of view. I also felt that you might have personal points of view that did not reflect neutrality and that might jeopardize the neutrality of the article's content if further changes were made to it. The fact that you referred to my revert as "fallacious and misleading" in your message above only further adds to my concerns. If what you're saying is true and if the article content really isn't referring to the maintain by the correct name, the correct thing to do is start a discussion on the article's talk page and come to a consensus among other participants that it needs to be modified. You definitely don't want to make these changes yourself, as I believe that it would be met with reverts and opposition by other editors and it could quickly and easily become an edit war or a dispute that's disruptive. If you have any questions or concerns while you're participating in this discussion, or if you have any further concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks for the message, and I hope that your new years celebration was both memorable and safe.Ā :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:38, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

Hi mate! I am just a random fellow editor. I am still a rookie here and I want to know how much time do you spend here as an admin. Assuming you do work outside, I want to know how you do your job here efficiently. Thanks! ImmortalWizard(chat) 18:09, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ImmortalWizard! Good question! How often I contribute and how much time I spend on Wikipedia depends on many different things: mostly depending on how busy I am, how work is going and if I'm operating under an elevated workload than usual, and what real-life obligations and other things are currently going on and if I need to spend the time I'd usually spend on Wikipedia to take care of them. Building good skills, knowledge of policy, and growing as an editor and gaining experience with everything isn't something that is obtained by putting long hours or large chunks of time into contributing to Wikipedia at one time. The kind of efficiency, experience, and overall knowledge and leadership that you're asking about requires a long-term commitment and dedication of time contributing to Wikipedia and collaborating with other editors in order to master. Over the time-span of many months to over a couple years is how you build long-term experience and skills and get them programmed into your natural habits - It's not something that you can rush. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. I hope that you had a memorable and safe new years celebration, and I wish you happy editing.Ā :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:53, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Pending changes protection

Is it possible to have pending changes protection enabled where edits from IPs as well as auto confirmed users are subject to review before going live? I was just wondering because there is a page where IPs are being subject to review, but auto confirmed users are causing problems. NoahTalk 18:17, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hurricane Noah! Great question! This level of pending changes protection actually used to exist before, and would be used in rare cases and on articles in contentious topic areas, had discretionary sanctions authorized, and were the subject of frequent disputes, edit wars, and other disruption.
To give you a brief history: It was referred to as "Level 2 Pending Changes" (the pending changes protection level we use today was "Level 1 Pending Changes"). Articles that were set to Level 2 pending changes protection would require all edits made by users who were not pending changes reviewers to be reviewed before they'd become live to the public. Because each of the many discussions that were held to try and propose and enact policies and guidelines with that protection level never came to any consensus, it became a protection level that nobody could use and it slowly faded into an abandoned option that eventually was removed. The reason behind its removal was mostly due to the fact that WP:30/500 came into existence and a consensus was achieved to allow us to use it openly and where appropriate under the guidelines. After this happened, most editors agreed that level 2 pending changes was something we no longer needed.
So, yeah! ...that's the story with that pending changes level. We sued to have it, could never use it to protect pages because no policies and guidelines were enacted to allow them, and it was essentially replaced with a new protection level that we now use. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. I hope you had a memorable and safe new years celebration and I wish you happy editing.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:18, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How am I disruptive?

I was editing and I forgot to edit some things so I went back to edit them how is that disruptive? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Dragoreman (talk ā€¢ contribs) 20:48, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dragoreman! As we touched on below in one of your messages to me here yesterday, the content you added to the article was reverted because they did not cite a source directly (be it a link to the official court case documentation, or to a news article or other page) that collaborated the information you added and verified it is as accurate and true. One or two of your edits contained text that included the court case information and docket number, but most of them didn't provide a reference or information to any source at all. Given the contentious nature of the content that was added, the fact that it was not properly referenced made it a serious violation of Wikipedia's biographies of living people policy, and hence were redacted and hidden from public view. This has obviously since been resolved with your latest changes to the article, but the previous revisions have to remain hidden. This is to prevent any editors from inadvertently restoring the article to a revision where this unreferenced content is present. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I'll be happy to discuss them with you and work with you to make sure that they're addressed. Thanks again for working with me to resolve the issue and to make sure that the content being added to the article was referenced properly.Ā :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:27, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Prosanta96, and welcome to Wikipedia! We're happy to have you as a member of the community, and we understand that you're new here and that you're not yet aware of all of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and how everything works yet, and you probably won't for at least some time. The reason I reverted your edit to Dainhat was because it added information and modified existing content and without citing any sources. Again, this is nothing to be overly worried about; you're new here and you're not aware of all of Wikipedia's policies yet. You're going to make mistakes and mess a few things up while you're learning the ropes here - that's completely normal and you won't be sanctioned or blocked if your mistakes were good faith attempts to improve the encyclopedia but had issues that you're still learning to master.
Since you're a brand new editor to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you spend any significant amounts of time with editing articles or expanding content. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be helpful to you. By the time you finish the entire tutorial and all of the interactive lessons that it provides, you'll know and understand exactly why your edit to this article was reverted, and you'll agree with the reason for doing so.Ā :-) Most users who take my advice and complete the tutorial tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them and it led to them being saved hours (if not over a day's worth) of time and frustration they would've experienced otherwise. Please don't hesitate to leave me a message if you have any questions, get stuck anywhere, or if you need help with anything. I'll be happy to lend you a hand! Again, I welcome you to Wikipedia and I hope you enjoy your stay.Ā :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:41, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, and thanks for the message! I'm having some trouble understanding what you're saying and asking, but I'll assume that it involves your edit to Intuition. The reason that I reverted it was because it appeared to be an edit that was made in order to either test how things worked or just attempt to play around with the edit interface and the content (which is a perfectly normal thing to). If I'm correct in my assumption, you'l want to make all of your test edits and changes to this sandbox page. It's created and maintained for the exact purpose of testing things, playing around with the interface, or seeing if things are working. A bot will automatically remove all content that added to it and left there so that you'll have a clean page when you go to start using it. Please let me know if I'm incorrect with my assumption or if you have questions about anything, and I'll be happy to clarify and explain things, help you with the questions you originally wanted to ask, and work with you to make sure that any confusion is taken care of.Ā :-) Best - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:01, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Puzzling revdel

Hi, just wondering why you considered this edit to be revdelable as "RD2: Grossly insulting, degrading, or offensive material"? I see nothing offensive in either the edit summary or the text. Ray Sawyer

I understand about referencing and I meant to, I apologise for not, but I don't understand what was controversial about adding that Ray Sawyer passed away, I had received the message from his own fb spokesperson related from his wife and kid and don't know what the controversy would have been? A great start had passed I thought people should know. I've edited other items on wiki in past years, never been in trouble for anything I added to a page. Again I'm sorry I didn't see the reference I did mean to and usually would.

Micki Frazier RaysKid (talk) 00:05, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RaysKid! No worries; I understand your confusion and I'll be happy to clarify and explain. When editors add a death date to a biography of a living person and without citing any references or sources, it's treated and handled as a serious violation of Wikipedia's BLP policy and just like any other edits that attempt to add unreferenced content that's controversial or contentious. For all we know, the edits could be attempts to vandalize or add blatantly false information to Wikipedia directly, or they could be edits made in good faith by editors but based off of information or sources that are unverified, compromised, or otherwise purposefully publishing false or hoax information so that it a becomes a wide-spread hoax that's published everywhere. Wikipedia has been the subject of media attention, news coverage, and active discussion throughout the internet a number of times in the past and due to the fact that we updated the article of a famous person to state that they were now dead and without citing a source or properly checking the validity and origin of such information. We basically fell prey to death hoaxes that were widely spread throughout the internet, and we could have avoided all of the embarrassment and trolling that comes with the subsequent media attention if he had simply followed our policies and held others accountable for not doing so. We absolutely cannot allow this to happen, and this is why your edits were reverted, treated as serious violations of Wikipedia's BLP policy, and hidden from public view. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know and I'll be happy to help you further. I hope you have a great rest of your day, and I wish you happy editing.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:28, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Part username

Several years ago - I think more than 10 - I spent some time on wiki helping refine the MSN Groups article, of which I was an avid member from their inception till their closure. My username was nuttybird2000, and there was even a short page created for nuttybird2000.

I continue to use wiki thru the years - it's my 'go-to' dictionary online, that's how much I trust it. I know it is well patrolled and vandals and errors don't last long, therefore the information is 99.9% correct!

I had not found any reason to edit a page till very recently (I've forgotten now what it was, but it was before Ray Sawyer) - and now I notice the nuttybird2000 userpage is gone, and I can't find any have of my ever having been here! (Being gone so long is the reason I think that I sort of 'lost the feel' for editing the pages and made such errors today)

Can u explain how removals of past users and such works?

RaysKid (talk) 00:32, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RaysKid! Wikipedia's new user tutorial does very well with explaining how this works in-depth, and providing you interactive lessons to get you comfortable with navigating through the edit history of pages and use diffs, revisions, and logs to find things you need from past edits. In a nutshell, every edit or change that's saved to an article or page is stored as a 'revision' to the article's edit history page. The history page lets you compare changes between revisions, review every edit that's been made on the article, and restore old revisions or revert back to better ones. Instead of doing a petty job explaining all of this through a message response to you, I'll refer you to the new user tutorial, as it does a much better job explaining this and giving you interactive lessons and tasks to help you get used to everything. In a nutshell: nothing is ever truly "deleted" on Wikipedia; anything that's removed from an article can be found in the history and reviewed or put back. So to answer your question directly (and technically) Wikipedia handles deletion by not actually performing any.Ā ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:23, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Finding earlier edit

Ok while I'm asking questions -

I mentioned on another post to u that I had recently edited another article and now I'm having a brain freeze and can't remember who the actor was.

I remember we used to have our own used pages that we would see all our check - is there one page will have all edits I make on it?

Also I seem to remember each article used to have its own chat page - where all the editors for that particular page could chat with each other about the efforts they made, etc - I don't see anything like that now?? RaysKid (talk) 00:46, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again RaysKid! I'll be happy to explain how this works, but (as I said above) you'll want to go through that tutorial I pointed you to in order to get a full level of understanding and experience with using it to your (and the project's) advantage.Ā :-) As I summarized in my previous message above, all edits and changes that are saved will add a 'revision' to the article's edit history, which you can use to pull up any and every edit ever made to the page in the past, compare previous revisions, restore the article to a previous or old revision, and other very useful actions. Every article and page will have their own edit history that you can visit, as well as their own talk pages that you can navigate to in order to add discussions and collaborate over. You'll be able to see two tabs on pretty much every page that will take you to those places. This also includes our user and user talk pages as well - you'tr absolutely correct. There's a lot more to explain and show you, but (as I said in my previous response) I'm going to defer you to that tutorial and encourage you (again... lol) to go through and complete it. It's exremely helpful and you'll learn a lot of new, good, and important things here.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:36, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Taking the vandalism and disruptive nature of your edits out of the equation, you can't cite your own experience, relationships with others, or any work that you've written and/or published yourself. What O mean to say is that you cannot "cite yourself" as a source and to justify the addition of content or argue the retention of it. This constitutes original research, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. All content added to Wikipedia must either be attributable to a reliable source, or (in many cases when adding content that isn't common knowledge) cited in-line and directly attributed to a reliable source. Hence, when you try to use your "personal knowledge" to justify adding content, or when you argue that the content should stay because "you've been there before" and hence you know it's real... these all constitute original research, and any or all of such content that is found should be removed.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:52, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daubje! No problem; I'll be happy to explain Wikipedia's policies and guidelines regarding your edits to the article. Any edits that add content about a person who is currently alive needs to be supported with a source that meets the guidelines on Wikipedia for being considered reliable - especially the edits add content that's contentious, controversial, or negative in nature. Is there an online link or a URL to the information regarding that docket? Just adding a docket number isn't sufficient in this situation (it's easy for someone to just throw random numbers together and claim that it's a legitimate case docket. If you locate and reference the same information and include a link to the court documentation that directly states and verifies what you're adding, you'll be just fine. Until then, I have to consider the content as unverified and treat it as such due to the severity and the nature of the content and the policy. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. I am unclear as to why you removed my edit. Sally Field makes the allegation in her current memoir. It is referenced on her own page. It is certainly as much a part of his story as any of his film credits particularly since the allegation is made by someone who is notable in and of themselves.

From the Sally Field page under "Early Life"-

Following her parents' 1950 divorce, her mother married actor and stuntman Jock Mahoney. Field alleged in her 2018 memoir that she was sexually abused by Mahoney during her childhood.[2][3] ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8003:2E21:AE00:FDDF:3C41:85F:D8F (talk) 03:10, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and took another look at it, and I'm inclined to agree that you're correct and that I perhaps misread a sentence or something else that made me believe that deletion of your user page was the right action to take. I've gone ahead and restored it for you. Please accept my apologies for what happened, and please do not hesitate to let me know if I can help you with anything else.Ā :-) Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:27, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I appreciate your response but have to ask why on earth multiple, seemingly unconnected admins, can dabble like this. From my perspective the whole process of engagement is marked by disconnected individuals taking a variety of contradictory actions some of which come across as deliberately obstructive to the point of bullying. ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by AEK1961 (talk ā€¢ contribs) 07:31, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

duff mckagan

What was the source that said he was known as Duff "Rose" McKagan? Was the singer known as Axl "McKagan" Rose? I just read Mr. McKagan's autobiography, "It's so easy (and other lies)", and I can tell you he was NEVER known as "Rose".[1] ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.177.181.249 (talk) 08:50, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oshwah - Re Ziggy Stardust album release date

Hi there My web page is www.5years.com (The Ziggy Stardust Companion) I specialise in that album and the 16 June release date does not agree with any references or Bowie books I have read in the last 20 years. I did see it crop up recently in a booklet for the Five Years boxset (2015) but again I think thats a very recent mistake which has now been repeated on Wiki Happy to keep chatting about this. regards Mike Harvey [REDACTED - Oshwah] ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.97.169.186 (talk) 09:29, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there..thank you for your note regarding a change I made to my daughters Wiki page. This is the first time I have done any Wiki editing and would love to understand what edit you were referring to so I can try to adhere to policies. Melissa.Yeager1 ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Melissa.Yeager1 (talk ā€¢ contribs) 12:46, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Melissa.Yeager1, and thanks for the message! Since you're brand new to Wikipedia, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial before you spend time making any more edits or changes.
On a side note, I saw in your message above that the article subject you're editing is of your daughter. Please know that this represent a clear conflict of interest issue here when you do this. The community will typically not accept changes made to articles from editors who show a clear conflict of interest with the article subject like this. You should not be making any edits or changes to articles where this is a problem, and for many reasons - one of which being that it compromises the aritcle's content and its neutrality, since editors who modify articles in these conflict-areas will add content that reflect a viewpoint that is not neutral, which degrades the overall quality of the article as a whole. Please consider participating in other areas that interest you, but where this is not an issue. Please let me know if you have any more questions, and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great rest of your day and happy editing.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:26, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Will absolutely do the tutorial, thank you for the information. I am just trying to make sure her page is accurate and I don't see what you mean about conflict of interest but will educate myself on the wiki world. Is it ok if I upload a different picture? It is a family owned pic, just more recent than the one there. If you don't have time to reply, no worries, I will research my questions. Happy New Year (Melissa.Yeager1 (talk) 19:31, 1 January 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Hello Oshwah,I will put my piece in again with a link,if you don't feel that meets the authenticity issue, then I'll just stop because there will be no other thing I could add, thank you ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Daubje (talk ā€¢ contribs) 12:54, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daubje! That sounds perfectly fine to me! I believe that this was the only issue, so adding a reliable source would resolve the concerns expressed.Ā :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 12:58, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Daubje - Thanks for following up with me here and for letting me know that you modified the article. Looking at your edit here, I see where you re-added the summary of the events and mention some details of the court case and ruling, but I still don't see where you added a citation and with an external link to a web document or page where this information is stated and verifies what you added here. This is what I meant when I told you here that a reference is needed. Were you able to locate an external link or URL that points to the court case documentation that you're trying to source? Let me know. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:36, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have put a satisfactory reason in the edit summary.

Hi there! Thanks for leaving me a notice here regarding your edit to the Young adult fiction article. The reason I reverted your edit to the article was because of what I noticed when looking at the overall edit history of that article. You removed content from the article and immediately reverted yourself twice. After I saw that you had removed nearly the same content a third time, I felt that it was the right thing in my capacity as someone who was patrolling recent changes because I thought that you may have been having issues or that you might have needed help to properly do what you wanted to do. I saw your edit summaries and (in normal context) I wouldn't have given your edit summaries much thought and I would have simply moved on to the next edit on my plate. When I said in my edit summary that your edit summary didn't seem "sufficient", I simply meant that, given your repeated circle of edits to the article that were ongoing, there seemed to be other issues that weren't being explained and I was going to try and work with you to see what's going on. Unfortunately, what often happens given the level of things I patrol, take on, and handle when others ask me for help, I got sidetracked with an urgent request and I wasn't able to follow up nearly as quickly as I planned on doing. My edit summary could also have been much more clear with what I was trying to say; I left it assuming that I'd be following up with you right afterwards. Looking at it today and given that I didn't, I'd understand how it could have been interpreted to mean that you had left no summary at all - which obviously isn't the case. It looks like the content is going into dispute due to the number of editors that are becoming involved with the issue at-hand. I hope that things get resolved peacefully and that the right decision is made and with the quality of the article's content, and the project as the primary focus. Thanks again for the message, and I hope my response here explained my thought process and that you now understand that I as only trying to step in and try and help.Ā ;-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:06, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

John McTiernan

Hi Oshwah,

Regarding the change of edit I made, I find your change to be inaccurate, and biased. Perhaps you believe McTiernan is a ā€œformerā€ filmmaker, but I do not. So how do we rectify that?

Calling someone, who is alive, ā€œformerā€ is not correct. Much akin to your sabbatical while in school.

Please leave the ā€œformerā€ omitted.

Thanks.

User page deleted

Hello!

After editing an article, I started working on a user page, so people could see my credentials (just like I show my students how to check the credentials of Wikipedia writers).

Imagine my disappointment to see you deleted if for being a personal webpage. Three sentences about myself constitutes a personal page? How shall I word it so it remains?

Yourfavoritelibrarian (talk) 17:00, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yourfavoritelibrarian! I apologize for misinterpreting your user page in regards to WP:NOTHOST and WP:UPNOT. To explain and to put things into perspective: Unfortunately, many editors will create an account, add stuff to their user page (either a bunch of stuff about themselves, a bunch of blatant advertising, or something that are serious violations of policy. They'll add this content, make no edits to Wikipedia outside of that page, and then they'll leave. Part of what I do is review these pages and remove the ones that need such. I misinterpreted your user page as one of those places, and for this I owe you my apologies. I'm restoring the content you added to it now; give me about two minutes and you'll be able to see it as you could before.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:07, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yourfavoritelibrarian - I've restored your user page as promised. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns and I'll be happy to discuss it with you and make sure that everything is answered and addressed. Thanks for leaving me a message and for bringing this to my attention, and I hope you have a great day and I wish you happy editing.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:10, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to Bob Cranmer page

I maintain the Bob Cranmer page. Mr. Cranmer wrote a best-selling book titled "The Demon of Brownsville Road" which has its own Wikipedia page. People who are not aware of this occasionally add to his personal (political career) page facts that are related specifically to his book, which is referenced on the career page. Mr. Cranmer is a former notable politician and his personal page primarily covers his career. Details about his involvement with his book are covered at length on the book's page. Thank you. ā€”Ā Preceding unsigned comment added by Sceneridge (talk ā€¢ contribs) 18:23, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sceneridge, and thank you for leaving me a message here with your input. When I read your edit summaries left with your removal of content, I interpreted them incorrectly and thinking that you were saying that the content should be removed simply because the article subject doesn't like it, which was the reason why I reverted them back. Now that I read them a second time (as well as your explanation here), I understand now what you meant and I'll leave you to it in order to fix and improve. Please accept my apologies for the misinterpretation, and I wish you a great day and happy editing.Ā :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 18:27, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
