Help on op blue star bias debate

Hi, I and one of my fellow editors are facing a deadlock on a issue of bias on a controversial topic Operation Blue Star, the summary of dispute can be found at [1], please let us know your views so that we can solve the dispute amicably. Semi-protection of India

Hi Nichalp - I've suggested here that the protection of this article should be relaxed. I understand that you are an administrator, so I request you to determine if I am interpreting the policy correctly. I gave my opinion out of a feeling that India has a degree of over-protection, as I had commented earlier. The difficulty for a new user, I feel is a serious enough matter. Hi Nick. I think, as of now, he has stopped pushing his POV. Let me keep an eye on the talk page and respond if needed. Right now I don't want to feed the discussion. Will suggest a rewording of the sentence in the Demographics section. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:16, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a pretty big IP range. However, I thought the block would not do much harm, since it's anon. only, account creation blocked. Your thoughts? Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 04:40, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, fair enough. Do keep an eye on that range for Fangusu socks, though. Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 07:57, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes! actually I used undo since it was only one single edit. Had there been multiple edits for adding this spam link then undo would have not worked and rollback would be needed. Am I correct? I will inform SPAM project for this particular website. --GPPande talk! 13:35, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suraj Tal or Surya taal

Dear Nichalp,

The above two articles are one and the same but Suraj Tal is the popular name and is also named so in Himachal Pradesh Government web sites. I tried to merge but again got the same message to refer to an Admnistrator, hence this request. By the way, I have resolved the porblem of uploading photos from flickr and the simple procedure works wonderfully. I have uploaded a score photos and I have also now 21 DYKs posted in the recent months. Thanks for the help. --Nvvchar (talk) 04:51, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just out of interest, why did you delete such large swath of revision from my talk page? You can contact me by mail if it's necessary. Nil Einne (talk) 08:35, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

O that won't be repeated. Anyway can you tell me whether http://oil-portraits.com/oil%20portrait-tilak.jpg is copyrighted or not. KensplanetTalkContributions 17:51, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I knew that before. That's what I basically reverted. Could you please explain User:Sanfy that such things are not permitted. For example, check his User:Sanfy/Image contributions. Many of his images are just blindly copied from websites and he claims he has cicked it by his camera. For example, Image:Milagres church, Mangalore.jpg has been copied from http://www.hindu.com/mp/2004/11/27/stories/2004112702480100.htm And look at the Decription Clicked from my camera.. I have started heavy activity on the History of Mumbai article. Next week, I should be able to complete everything at this rate. KensplanetTalkContributions 18:17, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I understand it's difficult. I dunno how to help. In the mean time, you could Imagify the article by adding relevant n better images. KensplanetTalkContributions 11:58, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I assume you came to the page via the oversight issue that I sent in. Curious then, why didn't you resolve the oversight issues? --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 20:23, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the {{prod}} tag from Misty Hall, which you proposed for deletion. I'm leaving this message here to notify you about it. If you still think the article should be deleted, please don't add the {{prod}} template back to the article. Instead, feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks! I've no idea what the above refers to, but prod isn't the solution. I would imagine that Division I NCAA baseball is pretty close to the highest amateur level for women. Which means she passes WP:ATHLETE. Now, if there's a different issue to resolve, so be it ... MadScot (talk) 23:21, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My views.

Regarding You seem to be agreeing with me in general!: Yes, I agree to most(not all) of your views because you do provide an explanation for your opinion which seem logical to me. The problem is with those people who provide only opinion with no explanation. I believe opinion is like an ass, everybody has one. But that doesn't mean that I agree to all your explanations :-) I highly respect you for the great work you have been doing for WP and WP:IND in specific. If there are some disagreements on few points it is just because we think differently. Providing explanation can bring the thoughts together. --GPPande talk! 14:26, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am still opposed to a separate Hindu extremism article because I still think it can be accommodated as a section in Hindu nationalism. I was also opposed to two separate articles Marathi nationalism and Marathi regionalism and so had nominated the former to AfD. But, AfD didn't pass through. Later, however both articles were merged. I was agreeing to subset theory as it was really true in this case that extremism can be put up as a section(subset) in Hindu nationalism article. I believe such articles which are based on varied degree of ideology (that is same in principle) are breeding ground for PoV pushing people. Secondly, I was never opposing the existence of extremism but simply trying to dilute the undue importance it seems to be receiving(in terms of title & text). That's why I had said extremism seems offending. --GPPande talk! 15:54, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichalp -- sorry, I hadn't seen your question. The answer is that all logged actions (editing, Special:Log entries, emails sent) are recorded with IP information. Logging in itself is not. Hope that helps! Sam Korn (smoddy) 15:24, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

For the review, I appreciate your time sincerely. I try to write content, just got my first GA, and of course I hope someday I will become skilled enough to write an FA, but right now I'll just have to settle for being a sorter and organizer. BTW, I'm still a "newcomer" after editing for three and a half years? Oh well, that can be remedied with time. :) MBisanz talk 16:16, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - as you suggested, I'd like to take up the task of re-featuring this article. I don't have to point out that I will need your guidance and help in a big way, but do keep an eye on what I'm doing. I would like to work a bit on the article myself before I put it up for peer review. Shiva (Visnu) 20:41, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, what I meant by your "comments" was your opinion on how India's achievements are being portrayed. I was actually relieved that I wasn't the only one recognizing that we're playing catch-up right now. I was arguing on the point of writing the article. Shiva (Visnu) 20:45, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I will get to work in 4-5 hours. Based on your advice, I have initiated a discussion on the semi-protection issue at the village pump. Your opinion, now over the broader topic and not just India, will be most valuable. Shiva (Visnu) 09:30, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

renaming

They wanted to be renaming as a 'friend' had got into their account and either vandalised or spammed (I forget). They were new and renaming wasn't obviously going to make any difference to that. Secretlondon (talk) 21:43, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nichalp. Edit Summaries

I cant create a User page. Or even new articles for that matter. I can only edit articles already created by someone else. Haven't been able to figure out how so far. And yes, I will update my edit summaries from now on. Am sorry about that--Arjun (talk) 08:14, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History of Mumbai Done from my side!!! Do you think the article looks like a FA now (Except for copyedits, prose issues and some missing gaps of info as you have already discusssed. ) KensplanetTalkContributions 10:11, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indian Railways has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured quality. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here. Dabomb87 (talk) 23:03, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Geography of India update

Hi - I've made some major changes to the article, before getting down to the work of finding references and copyediting. I have mainly merged related sections - "Soils," "Natural Resources" and "Geology" have been merged to form "Geology and resources," "Rivers" merged into "Bodies of water" and the "Location and extent" incorporated into the lead, given that its information was so basic that it needed to be mentioned in the lead itself. I have removed the "Climate" section - what I have done is to add the region-specific climate details to the relevant section; for example, the effect of the Himalayan barrier on climate has been added to the paragraph describing the Himalayas in Geography of India#Mountains and the same with Geography of India#Thar Desert. I hope this meets with your approval. I will also help out on the FAR of Indian Railways. Shiva (Visnu) 03:28, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No No No I am not at all rude to anyone :) I didnt't know the CAPS and the Red link policy. I have given the article at WP:GAN. It may take around 1-2 months. Enough time for Copyedits, Mehrotra review. Does Mehrottra respond immediately? KensplanetTalkContributions 15:56, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You did not respond as promised

You agreed with my point, and promised to reply, and yet you did not.

Agreement with my point implies that you have abused your privileges as administrator. You are protecting the existence and persistence of a falsehood on Wikipedia. You flagrantly commit a misuse of administrative tools.

You know that every claim that Angus completed a global human-powered circumnavigation stems from his personal claim. First person stuff that you say has no place on Wikipedia. I have offered you reports refuting his claim. And yet, for reasons that no logic could possibly defend, you block me from editing.

You may be aware that the addendum "but this status is questioned" was explicitly written regarding the status of "circumnavigation" because of the Jason Lewis - Colin Angus controversy about who actually committed a circumnavigation. The phrase appears right after the word "circumnavigation" and it reads so as to imply that "this status" refers to the status of circumnavigation, which is why the phrase was inserted.

This is not sufficient to render the statement acceptable, because it is an unassailable fact that Colin Angus did not use only human power. He executed parts of his journey by means that contradict his own "rules". For example, it was okay for him to run with the currents of a river, but not to raise a sail. Which he did, which is reported in contemporaneous report to be found in the Nome Nugget by all those not too slothful to check their facts.

Now, I only ask a couple of words be inserted: that "Colin Angus CLAIMS to be the first to complete a .... ."

That is true. I certainly agree that he claims to be the first. I know that be is practicing deception.

If you 1) block me from doing so, and 2) refuse to make this edit yourself, you must live with knowing that you are protecting the rights of people to lie for personal gain on Wikipedia. Some grand administrator that makes you. It is shameful. So do what you know is right, seeing as you feel the need to use your influence. At least use it in the interests of promoting truth rather than deception.

Misuse of administrative tools

Misusing the administrative tools is considered a serious issue. The administrative tools are provided to trusted users for maintenance and other tasks, and should be used with thought, serious misuse may result in sanction or even their removal.

Common situations where avoiding tool use is often required:

  • Conflict of interest/non-neutrality/content dispute — Administrators should not use their tools to advantage, or in a content dispute (or article) where they are a party (or significant editor), or where a significant conflict of interest is likely to exist. With few specific exceptions where tool use is allowed by any admin, administrators should ensure they are reasonably neutral parties when they use the tools.
  • Communal norm/policy — When a policy or communal norm is clear that tools should not be used, then tools should not be used without an explanation that shows the matter has been considered and why a (rare) exception is genuinely considered reasonable.
  • Reinstating a reverted action (sometimes known as "wheel warring") — see below for this and for the very few exceptions.

In most cases even when use of the tools is reasonable, if a reasonable doubt may exist, it is frequently better to ask an independent administrator to review and (if justified) take the action. This is a matter of judgement if necessary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ilyich (talkcontribs) 23:31, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nic,

  • Thanks for your comments. I really don't think anything I did was even within a stone's throw of being "uncalled for", but I'm quite aware that it appears that I was the bad guy in that story. I.. regret that. But it is what it is.
  • In short, FAC is being constantly subjected to short, content-less articles that are grammatical and well-referenced, but have no other FA-like qualities. That is, this HDYTTO nom is merely an example of a larger issue. I am very sorry that HDYTTO chose to make it a personal issue, and even far sorrier (is that a word?) that he chose to withdraw his nom and play the martyr, manipulating others (witness you, taxman, etc.) into labeling me.. mean, or whatever.
  • Good granny, this ain't Tee-ball where everyone gets an award for participation. FAC is the place where no lies are told, no warts are overlooked. FAC is the place where you are clearly told that your fly is open, your socks don't match your pants, and your singing voice is actually crappy, even though you really love to sing. FAC is the place where things that would never be said in any other forum must be said, for the sake of Wikipedia. In short, FAC is a critical place, sometimes sharply so. If you can't stand criticism, then go to some process or forum where the goal is to be supportive rather than objective, evaluative and critical. Those forums and processes do exist, and have a worthwhile place in Wikipedia. But FAC is not one of those forums or processes.
  • Please do let me know if you have further comments or questions. Ling.Nut (talkWP:3IAR) 01:50, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
